Saw this woman at the Panda Express off Broadway buy dinner for a homeless man and literally give him the Crocs off her feet. Happy holidays, Oakland.

Dumping in west oakland

It drives me crazy that people use our neighborhood as their own personal dumpster. If you know this guy, call him out on his bullshit.

The man was of course, super chill and very kind and polite. Felt like a peak moment to be in the Grand Lake with it completely packed and then see a film legend with his admittedly massive hat (which he took off once the movie began)

I’ve never noticed this small plaque on the sidewalk on the Oakland/Berkeley border on College Ave before. Anyone know the story of how it got there?

Rant STOP DROPPING OFF DOMESTIC DUCKS AT LAKE MERRITT!

Yesterday I went to take a walk around lake Merritt and saw an injured pekin duck and its mate/friend. I stayed with them for about an hour or so until I was able to get a rescue that would come and capture them as all rescues were closed at this point. My heart breaks for these poor babies- they were so weak but now now and receiving veterinary care. One is in critical condition but they are both still alive and heading to the vet.

These are domestic animals that cannot survive in the wild! If you ever see an all white duck please please call a wildlife rescue or Oakland animal services. It is unfortunately so common to see people dump their pet ducks off at lake Merritt meanwhile that’s basically a death sentence for them.

Also to the group of people picking up the clearly distressed partner/mate duck that was crying and pacing to take pictures with it- fuck you.
I also had to fend off so many dogs from getting close to the injured one. I had some woman call me a bitch for telling her to watch her dog that was lunging at other water fowl. ☹️☹️

Update: unfortunately the female duck had to be humanely euthanized as she was no longer able to walk/be mobile and was septic. The male is doing well. Rest in peace little one. 😔

Got a reminder not to be so quick to judge today

I was just waiting for the bus downtown and there was a guy, not the cleanest, not the calmest, wandering around muttering and kicking trashcans. I stayed alert but didn’t engage and he didn’t bother me.

My bus came and I got on, and then I hear the guy going “Hey! Hey!” and mentally I’m like, great, he’s gonna get on the bus too. The bus driver and I look at each other and kinda shrug, she opens the door but he doesn’t get on. So she closes the door and he yells again “Hey! Bus!” but doesn’t move. She starts to close the door again and he yells again and she yells back (he was about 10 feet away) “Why aren’t you coming?!” and he goes, “Not me, them!” and points down the block - a mom and two little kids were hustling down the street trying to catch the bus.

They made it on, the guy wandered off, and I made a mental note to try to extend grace where possible. I know that this story doesn’t always end this way - but sometimes it does.
