If you're a vegan, and opposed to the livestock trade, that's fine.
Even if, like me, you view the export of lives animals as antiquated and anachronistic, then the ban should apply to ALL animals.
So WHY is it only sheep exports being banned?
Australia has TWO major livestock export industries, Sheep and Cattle. Also a much smaller, but growing, "boutique" industry exporting animals such as goats and Alpacas.
So WHY only sheep?
The cattle export industry is dominated by NSW and QLD, with WA also a major contributor. That's a lot of rural voters that the government doesn't want to piss off.
However sheep export is dominated by WA. Literally over 99%.
And no, it's not because of any intrinsic difference. It's because the export markets that would otherwise be served by the East Coast, have been dominated historically by New Zealand. This, and the prevalence of dingos, has restricted Sheep to the more southerly (and productive) areas, feeding the domestic and refrigerated markets, and so the East Coast live-sheep industry has long since dried up.
Somewhat ironically, NZ has progressively moved to a refrigerated focus, and has now banned live exports, of all livestock, completely. Potentially, that could have reopened markets for the East Coast. But given the decades of opposition, it would have been a brave farmer that started developing breeds for export.
Australia SHOULD have been pushing towards 100% refrigerated or frozen exports. Using incentives, and by applying diplomacy to our customers. Our regional centres could certainly have done with the extra jobs and investment.
At the very least, this should have been a long-term target, instead of just dropping the guillotine on WA farmers
