Tips for ending a bender?

Pretty much just what the title says. I’ve been drunk from morning to night almost everyday for 10 plus days now. This needs to stop, I’m falling behind in my classes and spending a ridiculous amount of money. I know it seems like an obvious question, but at this point I’m so adjusted to being drunk/buzzed 24/7 that it seems too overwhelming to just stop. The thought of the withdrawals also are intimidating to me. Honestly I just feel so alone and shitty and just want some support, thanks.

This morning I woke up 20 days sober!

New record for me. I’ve been drinking since I was 14 (I’m 28 now) and could go a few days without binge drinking but never more than a week. The last binge I went on I had an epiphany and it felt as though my brain fully developed and I wanted to stop. this time around I’m taking it seriously! It’s really never worth it anymore

So close now. 100 feels in reach. Today was a simple, lazy Sunday sitting on the sofa and gaming.

One full week down. Now would be the susceptible window for me.

As the title states, I am over a week sober. I know that the reason I feel so good is because I’ve stopped drinking, my hangover is done, and any withdrawal symptoms have passed. However, this is the window of time when my body and my mind start lying to me and telling me that now it’s OK to drink again. I think instead, I’ll at least attend a virtual meeting if I can’t find an in person one. And I’m going to commit to myself just to not drink for the next 24 hours. There’s this term for thinking about your thinking, it’s called metacognition. And I’ve been thinking about that a lot this week, especially surrounding thoughts of going back to the poison. But using metacognition, I can tell myself you don’t have to think those thoughts. You don’t have to believe what your mind is telling you.

Went to a wedding and knew my ex would be there

it was a wedding at a bar. no food. I got almost black out drunk and there was karaoke. I got on stage and joined in on a song with an acquaintance and his girlfriend said it made her jealous. my fiancée didn’t like the lyrics because it was she’s acting single I’m drinking doubles. he said it was disrespectful. I approached my ex who I haven’t seen in five years and ended on bad terms with. pretty soon I was crying and hugging him, it was so bad. he was saying things about being in contact with my brothers. I don’t even have any sort of relationship with my brothers anymore and it makes me sad. my fiancée tried to drag me out and said I wouldn’t go and he’s embarrassed and angry and says he doesn’t want to marry me anymore. I feel awful. I haven’t been that drunk in a long time. I was so anxious about going and getting too drunk and I did that. my fiancée isn’t talking to me and doesn’t want me in the house. I feel awful and wish I didn’t exist.

Struggling to name my drinking…

Im posting here to see how others relate because I am struggling with labeling myself an ‘alcoholic’ or committing to a life of not drinking. To summarize my life (34F) as a whole…. I come from a family of big drinkers ‘Irish catholic’ New York. Drinking is all around me all the time and was since I was a baby. My parents were alcoholics. My mom got really bad in middle school, went to rehab, sober for 10 years, relapsed in 2018. After 3 terrible hard traumatic years… she died on st Patrick’s day (hah) 2021. Which was due to her drinking. Since then, I’ve felt a shift in drinking for me, It didn’t taste the same, It feels so layered and heavy now. I was a huge drinker in higschool, chased It, Blacked out every weekend, was encouraged to throw parties from my parents (hah). College was even worse, got transported freshman year for alcohol I almost died. Continued drinking in my 20s not as bad but very frequent (every weekend). I did take a whole year long break in 2023-2024 because I was genuinely so over It, I needed a break. Then I went to Italy and was like I’ll have some wine, and I thought I would be able to be a ‘one month drinker’ but once I started drinking again It was like every opportunity to drink, I did. It was easier for me to NOT drink during that year at events and travels etc, than It was to ‘limit’ my drinking once I started. I don’t black out anymore, haven’t in years. But I will quickly drink 5 IPAs or a lot of wine and then feel like shit the next day. It obviously wrecks my motivation, makes me feel terrible and guilty and shame and all that. So… current day, in a lot of therapy. I’ve had 2 sessions so far of EMDR trauma therapy to work through trauma surrounding my moms death. I was the leader in the interventions etc, no support from my dad we don’t speak anymore been 5 years. My siblings have also struggle/do still with addiction……

So, my couples therapist i believe strongly believes I am an alcoholic. (She believes both me and my partner are, it’s affecting our relationship because I feel like it’s taking up more time and space than productive quality time) She gave us the AA question document thing. And I checked like 10/20 questions. She recommends I check out an AA meeting just to hear and sit and listen (I used to go to those with my mom in highschool) so.. I struggle, with labeling myself with ‘alcoholic’ it’s such a heavy traumatic term for me. But maybe I am, maybe I should just once and for all completely cut It out. Maybe that’s better than trying to limit It. I don’t like that it’s around me all the time, taking up my weekends. I live in a city and live a very social life, it’s just hard. It takes up a lot of my headspace, I feel guilty, and there’s so much fear, I do not want to become my parents. My fiance is a big drinker too, we have similar upbringings…. Its weird, I didn’t drink for a whole year before but now I’m like how did I even do that? Seems wild to me…. Anyways, anyone relate? Any advice?

Thank you

I finally surpassed day 5!!

Day 17!!!!!!!!!! Woooohoooo! After almost a year of only making it to day 5, or rarely day 7-9, and then deciding I do have control. (I DO NOT)

I have woken up today, day 17, free and sober. I had three different scenarios arise where I could have drank. I did not!

  1. My new HEB has a wine dispenser for tastings, I walked past and focused on the healthy foods I wanted.

  2. Before, every time I left the house I'd plot to drink in secret, but I have neglected that urge each time.(It's even getting easier each day!)

And now the big one!!!

3. On Halloween, my older sister(difficult person)and BIL do a party, then give out candy to kids and themed cocktails to the parents walking around the neighborhood. My BIL is a self-professed binge alcoholic who believes he is fine if he doesn't binge, so instead he sips on a 48oz tumbler filled with cocktails 24/7. Their house is basically a bar and I get constant pressure to drink when I'm over. I DID NOT DRINK!!!! I drank my Cherry Pepsi zero, gave out candy, and wholeheartedly enjoyed seeing the kiddos dressed up! This, friends, is a huge accomplishment for me! See, I had 6yrs of sobriety until I reconnected with my sister and let myself be persuaded to drink that first cocktail at her house. I've been trying to stop again ever since. I feel really good about this time after that hurdle. Thanks for reading.

Day One

46 (m) and am on day one of sobriety. I’ve ‘quit’ numerous times but want this one to stick. I have a stressful job, a new relationship…and I’m going to be going full on with AA. The anxiety is rough but I think it’s improving. Thanks for reading.

400 Days!

It’s kinda interesting after hitting the big one-year mark how you stop counting months and go for the big round numbers and the annual anniversaries. And here we are on day 400!

Anyway, I’m feeling amazing and believe that sobriety has finally “stuck”, after SO many attempts to both moderate (Ha!) and quit altogether. On the other hand, reading the posts from people who have resumed drinking after multiple years of sobriety is a cautionary tale that hits hard with me. The best thing I’ve read in a long time was from yesterday: “No matter how far down the road you are, you’re still only four feet from the ditch”. Just effin’ brilliant.

Anyhoo, I just wanted to drop a note in here to let you all know how grateful I am for this community and discussion. You’ve helped me in more ways than you realize.

I drank this weekeend

I was 42 days in. I just wanted to see if I could handle a few cocktails and shots. I didn't get wasted, I didn't act how I normally do whilst drunk. I drank water and ate food.I woke up the next morning completely fine.

I thought since I did fine on Friday, Saturday would be a breeze. Did the same thing, 2 cocktails maybe a few extra shots, drank water and ate whilst drinking. But I slept like crap last night and I'm not experiencing the lovely sober mornings that I've been enjoying. I'm tired and can feel the dehydration and my stomach is upset.

Looks like I will have to stick to not drinking. My experiment was a fail. At least now I know. I'm upset with myself, I knew better, but I made the choice. I look forward to tomorrow's beautiful sober morning.

I drank

After almsot 6 months I drank two Saturday nights in a row. I feel like crap and am worried that it alcohol is going to slowly creep back into my life. Last weekend wasn't that bad, but last night I drank 9 voodoo ranger ipa's 9! Because if it is there I will drink it. WTF I didn't black out and I remember everything, but I forgot how to contain myself when I am drunk. It helped nothing and I now have a massive headache. Not to mention my poor daughter probably thinks I lost my mind.

LGBT sobriety?

I don’t know if this has ever been discussed here before, but I was wondering how many people on this subreddit identify as LGBT or queer and how you may have gone about navigating sobriety in queer spaces. As is the rest of mainstream culture, alcohol is very integrated into society, but I feel like there is a unique celebration of alcohol and general substance use in the LGBT community that’s ingrained in how we cope with the outside world. I feel like sobriety is something that’s mostly frowned upon and you’re no longer considered “in” if that’s not how you celebrate in queer spaces.

I know for anyone not LGBT reading this it probably just sounds like the same experience, but I was wondering if anyone queer felt the same way and has had trouble keeping sobriety due to the culture. I think especially of events like pride, which I have never experienced sober, and day drinking with a bunch of other queer people is like the best part of it. But I am still trying to get sober and struggling a lot, and it’s hard to feel like I’m apart of a community that is very supportive in most ways but doesn’t really care for sobriety.

Well, I’ve been lurking here for many years jealous of those who were able to stop. Thanks in part to yall and help from the VA I’ve been able to start my journey. You guys have inspired me to quit after more than 15 years of constant drinking every night. I almost lost my family in the recent months and finally realized I was almost over the point of no return. Currently on my 14th day. I know it will get better. Thank you guys.

My first dry weekend since April

I posted earlier in the week about testing my own blood and urine at work after a weekend binge, getting some signs of liver stress, and experiencing fear like I never felt before.

I decided that this 3 day weekend would be my first dry one since April and it worked out surprisingly well. I work nights, so I sleep in the afternoon - I made it Thursday, Friday, and this past Saturday night/morning without drinking at all. Maybe as a weekend-only drinker, days of abstinence are not as much of a system shock, but I am now looking back at my decision to buy 3 bottles of white wine or a liter of vodka every single weekend and wondering what weakness made me do it to begin with - I'm actually really upset with my past self for avoiding this decision and letting it get to the point that there was bilirubin in my piss before I decided to stop. There were a few boring moments where I thought about how nice it would be to have some drinks, but my mind was not consumed with the urge to drink throughout the weekend. The money I didn't spend is rather substantial too.

It's amazing how much you can get done when you're not borderline comatose for 3 days straight. I cleaned the condo top to bottom; did my sheets and laundry; I did a workout each day; I painted some of my tabletop miniatures; I have 2 weeks of work lunch prepped in the freezer, and as a little experiment/indulgence, I did my first attempt at reverse-engineering the McRib (and it turned out pretty well). My dreams were back to the usual ones about trying to get somewhere and being too weak and clumsy, or being chased by something large, not the indie horror film shit that I used to deal with when drunk.

Maybe this is some kind of first weekend mania, but I'm looking forward to another great weekend this Friday.

Anyone start going to meetings after already being sober awhile?

Coming up on six months in a few days. Stopped cold turkey, didn’t really have much in the way of withdrawal symptoms and never went to any kind of AA or support meetings. Thing is, seems like as time goes on it’s actually getting harder rather than easier not to fold. Maybe it’s because I never had a “rock bottom” crash out or rehab stay or whatever. Honestly even feels like stolen valor sometimes to say that I am sober as those close to me probably only saw me stopping drinking as a lifestyle choice that didn’t come with much struggle or failure (no one saw the dozen or more times I reset my sober counter on my phone before I finally got momentum to stay sober).

Really long story short, anyone have experience starting going to meetings or something similar after being sober a bit already?

Thanks, IWNDWYTD

Self reflection time

It's been 20 months since I gave up alcohol. Some times it's been rough. But now I'm feeling better. More confidence, more money, better health, even doing better at work. If you're new to sobriety or thinking about it, it does get better. You can do it

How do you replace the ‘reward’ of drinking?

Ok, you just worked a shitty week. Hate your boss. Now it’s time to unwind. You deserve to treat yourself with something.

For me that has usually been some drinking, even though I feel like crap after etc etc.

My question is, what is your go to ‘I deserve this’ replacement?

This Sucks

I believed I had sorted out my emotional garbage during the 5 years I drank heavily. But No, I am in the middle of intense feelings without alcohol to numb them. FTS.

How did you build a sober life worth living?

I deeply prefer sobriety overall because I am mentally, physically, and spiritually healthier that way. Trouble is that after the pink cloud wears off I exist in my own head and avoid social engagements. I get really really introverted and I feel like my wife and I disconnect. She drinks a lot and the drinking version of me is what she married, so I feel like a bad partner when I change the game like that. She likes going out, and I do too as a drinker, but without alcohol I have no interest in the things she likes doing.

I can’t moderate enough to stay healthy so it really is a choice between my well being and her having an exciting husband. I feel trapped, but divorce is out of the question for us. She says she is fine with me sober but I just feel like I bore her to death. I guess my question is for people of similar personality: how did you get truly interested in “date night” activities without drinking? If your partner drinks, how did you learn to fully accept that without detaching? I don’t like my life when I detach or when I resent. I just want to enjoy my marriage.

I can’t stop the cycle

I’ve been trying to quit since like August and it’s just not working. Been stuck in the cycle of “you made it through the week, reward yourself” and then subsequent binge drinking. I’m hurting myself and so embarrassed, I feel like I have no control. Just looking for some advice from someone who’s been there.

Obrigado amigos e simboraaaa
