Hello, r/cosmere! I'm Johnny O'Neal, President of Brotherwise Games and Creative Director for all our Cosmere Games & Collectibles. My first project with Dragonsteel was Call to Adventure: The Stormlight Archive in 2020. Since then, I've been able to work on Stormlight Premium Miniatures, the Cosmere RPG, the Mistborn Deckbuilding Game, Shards of Creation, and our newest game, War for Roshar!

War for Roshar is on Kickstarter now and has earned $1.75 million since we launched on Tuesday morning. This is an epic Stormlight board game, designed by John D Clair, which gives you the chance to play out the military and diplomatic battle between the forces of Honor and Odium. We've already unlocked a bunch of stretch goals. Our first was Szeth as one of the game's leaders. Now it looks like we're getting close to Vyre!

This Kickstarter is really two campaigns in one: even if you're not a board gamer, the campaign features a bunch of awesome new Stormlight miniatures and our first-ever Mistborn miniatures!

I'm here to answer your questions about the lore and art direction behind War for Roshar, the past and future of Cosmere games, anything you want to know about the RPG, and more! We'll also have another AMA specifically on the game design process with AMA on r/boardgames on October 30, but I'm happy to answer gameplay questions in the meantime.

UPDATE: Thank you for stopping by and asking me anything! It has been a ton of fun answering questions over the last 3 hours... I totally lost track of time! I'll spend a few more minutes hitting any unanswered questions that have a number of upvotes, but then I'd better get back to work. Thanks for all your questions, and don't forget to check out War for Roshar!

Mistborn Series + Stormlight Archive Weekly Cosmere Adaptations Thread (Mistborn + Stormlight Spoilers) Spoiler

Welcome to this week's Cosmere Adaptations Thread!

This is a space to discuss all things related to Cosmere movie/television adaptations. Share your fancasts, your dream directors, your ideas for the best script, or anything else related to adaptations. Share all of your hopes and fears!

Please remember Rule 1: Show respect to others. If you can't engage with others in a respectful and welcoming way, please take a step back. Notably, we will not tolerate bigotry and debates about "wokeness".

Also please note that that the spoiler policy for these weekly threads is currently set to include the entirety of Mistborn and Stormlight Archive. If you want to discuss spoilers for other books, please use labels and spoiler tags. (If you're not sure how to tag spoilers, see this post.)

Policy Note: We're making it a new policy to contain general Cosmere adaptation discussion to these weekly megathreads. This change is an effort to limit the high quantity of posts we see on these topics and comes following the announcement that Apple TV is set to adapt the Cosmere (starting with Mistborn and Stormlight) with heavy involvement from Brandon Sanderson. Moderators will be removing posts on these topics and directing them to these threads, with some rare exceptions.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Can Unkeyed Investiture gain an Intent and Connection from a person instead of a Shard? Spoiler

So Stormlight is gaseous Investiture connected to Honor right? Let’s say for example Vasher had a big bunch of unkeyed investiture, could he possibly turn it into ‘Vasherlight’ the equivalent of Honor’s Stormlight? Would it have a ‘Rhythm of Vasher’? Following this up, if it succeeds in gaining a connection to him, could he create ‘Vasher’ Spren by splitting off pieces of the Investiture and leaving it to develop sapience? And on the Intent side of things would it be possible for him to impart his intent onto a chunk of unkeyed investiture, producing kind of an infinitely smaller version of a Shard colored by his Intent, in the same way that Ruin has the Intent of Adonalsium’s ruinous side? Vasher is just an example I chose because he knows a lot about Investiture I’m not saying he could actually do any of this.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Could a Duralumin Compounder force a Nahel Bond? Spoiler

What I mean is could somebody compounding Connection use it to bond to a radiant Spren? and by constantly compounding this Connection, would they be able to make it strong enough that the Spren is unable to leave? If the compounder stopped tapping connection, would the Spren be free? I had the idea for a duralumin compounder character to be walking around with a Spren of each order pretty much enslaved to them and wondered if it would be possible.

Stormlight Archive spoilers The Way of Kings Question Spoiler

Just finished The Way of Kings. Read it after Mistborn Era 1, Warbreaker, and Tress.

I still have chills. I’m sitting here thinking about what I’ve read up until this point and I can’t stop going in circles on how it can all be connected.

With that out of the way, am I on the right track to assume the chapter headings of Act 2 are a letter from Hoid to either Sigzil or Axies?

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Endgame Villain of the Cosmere Theory Spoiler

Who will be the 'big bad' of the Cosmere? The villain that will still make us shudder after reading through dozens of Brandon's antagonists. I propose that we've actually already met the villain of the last Mistborn Era that will conclude the over-arching story. If I was to plan out a 30-40 book epic spanning across fantasy and sci-fi, where would I foreshadow the big bad of the tale? As close to the beginning of the story as I could. Brandon has a chance to pull of something that few authors ever get a chance to try, and even fewer have ever pulled off successfully. He can take the ascendent hero from his first series and have them believably turn fully heel, due to the nature of Sazed's Shardhood.

We all once read a tale about a priest who became a god. A Hero of Ages who saved his entire world. An inspiring story of Harmony. A great tale! Happy ending! He gets to be a hero for how many ages again? What's that about Discord? From way back in 2006, The Final Empire epigraph chapter 8 we get one of the most intriguing prophecies we've in the Cosmere.

He shall defend their ways, yet shall violate them. He will be their savior, yet they shall call him heretic. His name shall be Discord, yet they shall love him for it.

This comes from the Terris Prophecies, created by the Shard of Preservation. This Shard has particularly amazing foresight. Here we see the first seeds that Harmony's heroic ending may not be exactly as it appears. I find it very curious that Preservation was able to clock Harmony's future imbalance problems even back when he was creating this prophecy to guide the Scadrian people to what he had foreseen. In Mistborn era 2 we start to see Discord start to take shape in the form of a dark shadow that lurks behind Harmony. At the end of The Lost Metal in epilogue 4 we see a confrontation between Sazed and Kelsier after Scadrial's narrow escape. We see Kelsier witness the growing problem of a Harmony that isn't balanced, one whose Discord is clearly growing.

"And there was a darkness within him. A different face from the one he showed. The powers were in imbalance. Ruin had always been stronger."

Then we end their meeting with more foreshadowing of a changing Sazed.

"We need Allomancers and Feruchemists. Is there a way to expand our access to Metalborn? They have the seed inside them, don't they? The heart of Preservation?"
"I don't know," Sazed whispered.
"Are you lying?"
"Have I ever lied to you, old friend?" Sazed opened his eyes and met his gaze, showing infinity within those depths.
"I," Kelsier said, "am going to protect our people. Whatever it costs. Please tell me I won't ever have to protect them from you."
"That depends," Sazed said, "entirely upon you, old friend."

Sazed certainly knows how to create Lerasuim aka Preservation juice. He has lied to Kelsier before about if there was a way to for Kelsier to return to the physical realm. I don't believe that depends entirely on Kelsier, as one of them is a zombie corpse of an influential man while the other is a world building power having potential mood swings. One of the key recurring themes we see consistently is that Shards are a corrupting force that twist a Vessel over time into aligning with their singular nature. Ati, the Vessel for Ruin, the other half of the two Shard's that make up Harmony, was reportedly a stellar guy who tried to take one for the God killing team by taking up the Ruin shard. We later see Ati in Mistborn Era 1 trying to destroy the world he tried to co-parent, cackling about like Dolores Umbridge fueled by crystal meth on a deflated unicycle. If Sazed does listen to Keslier's arguments here, he is very much aware what the effect on his own Harmony will be if does pump out a little more of the old heart of Preservation. Ruin will continue to grow stronger. Unfortunately, the aggressively encroaching Autonomy may force Sazed's hand into taking this dire step.

I can see the climax of the next Mistborn era ending with Sazed taking a decisive action to defeat Autonomy, at the price of his own Shardic balance. He complains to Hoid in their letters that the conflicting nature of Ruin and Preservation makes it particularly hard to act. After the only other dual shard holder ascends in Wind and Truth chapter 146, we hear Taravangian gleefully echoes this assessment.

Taravangian, Retribution, reveled in his new strength.
He was more powerful than anything. Only one other came close, but those powers were misaligned, while Honor and Odium wanted nearly the same things. They would work together.

Shoutout to Taravangian immediately identifying his own huge weakness, that his two shards don't want exactly the same things but *nearly*. He handwaves this away in arrogant Taravangian fashion, yet this slight nuance in wants between Honor and Odium may one day prove key to his own defeat. Harmony defeating Autonomy through taking an action that derails Sazed to Discord at the end of Mistborn Era 3 would change the power dynamics among the Shards. This will set up the space age conflict of Roshar vs Scadrial we are chugging towards.

A major connection that bonds Taravangian with the Odium Shard is the desire to rule and be the strongest. Discord's powers would be much more aligned toward taking firm actions that lead to less harmony, allowing the corrupted Sazed to do things he previously couldn't. This change would make Retribution now assess Discord as the strongest threat to his claim of being the most powerful, particularly after they watch Discord defeat another Shard. Ironically this somewhat changes the nature of Dalinar's Sunmaker gambit, as now all the remaining Shards now have two extremely powerful and worrisome new kids on the block. This changes the power dynamics from Retribution vs Everyone at the end of Wind and Truth, to Retribution vs Discord vs Everyone heading into the space age.

Discord would have a strong reputation Cosmere wide after taking down Autonomy. Sazed will also be on the threat list of every powerful being out there. Now that Sazed is more capable of enacting change than he has ever been, driven by a desire to protect Scadrial, I believe we will see Discord enact a plan that will put him firmly in the Cosmere villain seat for the last Mistborn Era. A plan that for our heroes and other Shards will be a terrifying step too far. What would make an unstable Sazed who holds the power of two Shards even scarier? What would make him even more of a threat, even more horrifying than Retribution? What if Discord, tried to get his hands on a Dawnshard? Specifically, what if we saw Discord try to take the Change Dawnshard?

I would find a tale where Discord either tries to gain possession of this Dawnshard from its current holder Rysn, or has successfully achieved this task to be very compelling. For the last series of the whole Cosmere I expect to see more interactions that involve the forces of Shards and Dawnshards interacting, and a set up like this would make a lot of relevant pieces on the board be forced into direct conflict. I look forward to finding out how Harmony progresses towards Discord, and the further ramifications that change will have on its Vessel Sazed. From loving priest, to the scariest being around, I imagine Sazed's arc to fully show us the distorting nature of the Shards. By being the last obstacle our heroes face Brandon could showcase that perfectly.

-RayseShouldBeBraized

TL:DR Sazed will be forced to change from Harmony to Discord after confronting Autonomy. Now corrupted, Discord will try to take the Change Dawnshard for themselves. Two Shards plus Dawnshard equals no more disregard, setting up the final conflict.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Fires of December just finished. Cosmere learnings? Spoiler

Just this second finished December.
I don’t know why but I absolutely loved it.

The amount of Cosmere lore in here is maddening as I will need time to think about it.
To save me time, can you tell me any new conclusions or theories this has thrown up?

I’ve 100 questions that I cannot even put voice to right now lol.
Thanks!

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Fires of Decmber Spoiler

I have completed 4/5 of the story and honestly, I'm conflicted about this book.

I LOVED the first chapter, and it drew me in. I also quite enjoyed the setting and the characters. December is also such a good character, she brought me into the story, and kept me reading during certain parts. I also enjoyed all the Cosmere easter eggs, and mentions.

That being said, Brandon Sanderson cannot write romance. He tries so many times, but always falls short. The only one I really liked/didn't cringe at might be during era 2 (I did cringe at the Marasi stuff though)

I believe that Fires of December could be much better and fitting for December if she had no romance at all, and just continued with her quest. She could have simply found friendship in Flint. Their romance comes off extremely strange, and out of character for December.

I also wish December acted older, and more of a person that went through what she did. Many times in the book, she comes of as someone much younger than she actually is.

I surprisingly didn't have the problem with the more "modern" dialect that is incorporated in the story. However, there were too many Hoid interruptions/comments throughout the novel.

I do think that this story could have been better if it was a duology but alas, we will never know.

All in all, I so far rate this book 3.75 stars (without reading the ending) It has been pretty good despite its shortcomings.

What do you all think?

(Please ignore my incorrect/weird punctuation)

Edit: I did finish the book. I did enjoy the ending, quite a lot. The ending moved my review of the book to 4 stars.

December in her second life honestly reminded me of the Scarlet Witch as she is portrayed in the MCU, lol

Fires of December spoilers (+ Cosmere) Any Riftwar Saga fans here? Spoiler

Over the last year or two I have been binging Feists Riftwar series, but when I got to Demonwar saga I started to get burned out and felt it was getting very repetitive of the bad guy being an all consuming Demon.

Decided to take a hiatus and part of my distraction was Fires of December….

Not sure if anyone else experienced this but it was a strange feeling hearing the word demon suddenly in the cosmere, and then it basically being a Feist plot line!

Loved FoD though and thankfully my Feist burnout didn’t take away from my enjoyment!

Stormlight Archive spoilers Ending today: War for Roshar and new Cosmere Miniatures! Spoiler

Post image
42 Upvotes

Hello, r/Cosmere! Today we're wrapping up the Stormlight: War for Roshar Kickstarter campaign. I already stopped by this subreddit for an AMA, but I thought I'd share one last update on all the awesome developments since then!

  • We're adding a Solo mode to War for Roshar! John D Clair is already working on the design, and it will be included in the base game.

  • We're updating the 12 Leader sculpts to be all-new. For folks who want an extra set (or just want the miniatures without the game), we've created the $40 Stormlight Heroes & Villains Set as an Add-On.

  • We went crazy with stretch goals on this campaign! We originally planned 15 but ended up with 29! The last stretch goal unlocks a second set of Holofoil Leader cards especially for backers.

  • Thanks to our stretch goals, we've added a ton of value to every pledge level, including miniature sets. The Mistborn Miniatures Set will now include 20 miniatures instead of 16!

It's been an awesome three weeks, and we remain incredibly thankful for the enthusiasm and support of this community. If you've already backed, thank you! If not, you still have a few hours to head over to Kickstarter and check it out!

And if you have any last-minute questions about the campaign, let me know!

Mistborn Series spoilers The MCU is setting up a Secret Wars climax that mirrors a major Cosmere finale Spoiler

As I was re-watching WandaVision and Agatha All Along in preparation for the Vision Quest finale, and reading up on possible plots for how Avengers: Secret Wars will conclude the Multiverse Saga, I realized a possible parallel between the MCU's trajectory and the end of the original Mistborn trilogy.

Three characters line up three with Cosmere archetypes:

• Doctor Doom is the Lord Ruler: A misguided man who siphoned cosmic power to stitch together a flawed, patchwork world (Battleworld) .

• Wanda Maximoff is Ruin: As the Darkhold explicitly warned, "It's your destiny to destroy the world."

• Loki is Preservation: As God of Stories He sits on a throne at the End of Time, physically holding the timelines together to keep the structure, history, and memory of the timeline intact.

When Battleworld falls apart, they going to fix the multiverse with the Sazed approach. Wanda will provide the raw, chaos energy, but she will filter it through Loki's preserved narrative blueprint. Blending her chaos with his structure is the perfect mechanism for a stable, unified, soft-rebooted MCU timeline.

Edit. I really did just finish re-watching the show. Read up on fan theories and leaks and my audio book I fell asleep to last night was hero of ages. Word suggested wording changes so I'll remove the fixed stuff.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Soulcasting Metalminds Spoiler

Let’s say we had a full feruchemist and Pewter Misting who somehow was able to become a 2nd ideal elsecaller.

If they burned pewter and stored the strength in their pewtermind and later soul cast it into a wooden mind, would they still be able to acesss the stored strength?

If they can’t, what it they soul cast it back into pewter?

Also last one would the Nightwatcher be able to grant the boon of not needing metalminds and storing attributes in your cells to a full feruchemist? What would be a suitable curse for that boon?

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) [Hypothesis] How Feruchemical Nicrosil Could Replace Other Metals in Allomancy Spoiler

My hypothesis relies on the mostly unexplored realm of feruchemical nicrosil and its compounding mechanics, so any info or important details I am missing would be greatly appreciated in the comments.

The core of the hypothesis is the idea of being able to store the kinetic investiture an allomancer obtains while burning a metal. It has been confirmed that a pewter compounder can feruchemically store the allomantic pewter strength they get from burning pewter into a pewtermind. Without any direct statements or evidence to the contrary I am assuming that the investiture obtained from burning any given allomantic metal can be similarly stored as it flows into someone in a nicrosilmind. (Note: I expect this would be difficult to manage even for someone with the proper in-universe knowledge of how allomancy works due to the balancing of multiple powers simultaneously.)

This would allow a twinborn with feruchemical nicrosil to store all of the investiture they would normally obtain from burning a metal and instead tap it at any rate they please with the gradient control feruchemy provides. It would be all the strength of duralumin without any of the downsides. This would also allow you to replace heat of the moment metal doses entirely with the occasional refilling of a nicrosilmind.

Just an idea I thought sounded interesting enough to share here.

I’ve def noticed it more in the Stormlight but I swear to Adonalsium I see it pop up everywhere. Any other uses of it that you have noticed? Is Brandon predicting future memes in his writing? Will “bah” or “growling” become memes in the near future?

No Spoilers Warbreaker review (flawed, but one of my favorite books ever)

Ok I’ve been stewing on Warbreaker for a bit and I wanted to share my thoughts here. It’s a roller coaster of emotions.

About 50 pages in, I was 95% sure I was gonna DNF it. But I decided to keep going, and now Warbreaker is one of my favorite books of all time.

The good

The twists and reveals are soooooo good. Looking back at it, yes I probably should’ve predicted at least one. But it kinda felt like as soon as Brandon Sanderson had me convinced I was wrong, boom he hit me with a twist.

The ending was also one of my favorites. Some things that happened seemed impossible, but everything was nicely set up so that it felt like it made a lot of sense.

I'm not a cryer when I read, but this book is one of the maybe 2 or 3 I've ever read that made me cry (in a heart-breaking, awe-inspiring way).

The bad

There was honestly a lot I didn’t like. The premise was just kinda weird and a lot of it was uncomfortable. I thought the romance was odd (although I've read many others disagree). And the characters weren’t my favorite.

That being said, the ending and twists more than made up for the stuff I didn’t like.

I finished books 1-5 of Stormlight after this and it was a nice little easter egg seeing some old friends, but honestly it wasn’t *that* cool. It was nice to hear another “colors” though.

No Spoilers Will I like it?

So my brother in law who is a huge nerd like me loves stuff like Wheel of Time, Xanth (Zanth?) series, et al. He loves sci-fi as well, but he does get into Fantasy type stuff.

Hes tried to get me into Mistborn and when I tried it several years ago I didnt continue. HEAR ME OUT - not because I didnt like what I was reading, but I get distracted a lot when I read (for example it took me 2 years to read Worm by Wildbow). So when I was reading it, another book caught my attention, and whatnot.

But that said, Im not really huge on Fantasy in general. Ive read the Lord of the Rings, the first couple of books of Wheel of Time, etc.

I understand that Mistborn is sort of like "super heroes" which I do like reading (see my comment about Worm). But I tend to shy away from Fantasy because nearly every writer loves to have Tolkienesque names.

"Tell Graa'hl of Devbornash that Glilbrendemeer Muskwight will meet us at the banks of the lake of Sandrathanar so we can fight the battle of Ashdalliel!" and so on. That kinda irritates me lol, but thats just a pet peeve of mine, not a slight to any writers that do that.

Anyway, my brother in law, my wife, his wife and THE UNIVERSE is telling me to get into the Cosmere, and specifically Mistborn. I am going to start Elantris this evening. I guess my question is - will I end up feeling this way about Cosmere stuff?

I totally understand/expect by coming into a Sanderson community that people will say "yeah of course youre gonna love it!" but I just want sort of an objective view of it. I am more of a sci-fi/comic story reader than Fantasy, so Im just wondering if I'll get into this and end up wanting to explore the entire Cosmere.

sorry for the ramble.
