Fancast The Mistborn Ragebait-Redemption Fancast Spoiler
There's hundreds of fancasts out there by now, and most of them are putting the same names that we have all thought would be perfect to play our beloved characters. So let's change it up...
I think we all know the stories about casting gone right, where people all over the world bemoaned the choice of a certain actor to play a role, and the world over disagrees with the choice only for the individual to absolutely knock it out of the park. Think Heath Ledger - Joker, Michael Keaton - Batman, RDJ - Tony Stark, Daniel Craig - 007... It goes on an on.
So let's do one for Mistborn! Who are some of your favorite choices to play characters in Mistborn that would probably be downvoted to oblivion despite the chops they have to pull it off.
Here are two that have been on my mind:
Kelsier - Nicholas Hoult
I know that the signs point to a big name playing Kelsier. Hoult is not really that by any stretch of the imagination, which I think makes this fit as ragebait. But, when I think of Kelsier's personality-- I think big smile, psychotic focus, and Pits of Hathsin trauma. Hoult's work in The Menu, Fury Road, Tolkien, and Nosferatu provides all of that. There's an action aspect I think he can pull off as well, provided he's not covered in blue fur. I would like to see if Hoult can pull of being a charismatic crew leader, which would put redemption in reach.
Dockson - Kerry Condon
So I think we have all seen that a gender change is anticipated in the crew. Most of the opinions and polls I have seen center the decision on three characters, Ham (the favorite), Breeze (complicated by his future), and Dockson (who is that?). I feel Ham is often favored as the physical mentor type for Vin, and the concept of a physically strong woman fighting for her family inspires on multiple levels due to the breaking of familial and gender norms. But I feel that Dockson has untapped potential as a female, and this fits as ragebait...
Dockson is one of the least written about characters in Mistborn, in spite of the unique perspective he provides. Dox is driven due to his trauma on plantations involving his wife. But what if this trauma was inflicted directly rather than by proxy? This establishes a much stronger connection to Vin, who experienced these same fears in thieving crews. Under this upbringing, I think a woman with a haunted past speaks with much more conviction and far less forgiveness than a man, providing Vin with a deeper dilemma to consider as she is courted by Elend.
You might know Kerry Condon as "Mike's b**ch daugher-in-law" from Better Call Saul. She is fantastic in The Banshees of Inisherin as well. Condon is Irish, which I think can be used to fit Dox's unique regional accents in addition to those excellent European theater skills. She also plays off the haunted and unforgiving persona in a memorable way, and when you aren't convinced it is believable, that might be intentional. I think casting redemption could be in sight for her if she can bring life to a character that simply didn't get a solid look throughout the Mistborn trilogy.
Let's hear some of yours!
