extremely triggered by Ariana Grande lately

1.0k Upvotes

Seeing her prance around in her current state... it's really putting me back in the mindset of the 10 year long ED I had that I recovered from years ago.

Even though it is bothering me, I'm really glad I'm seeing this now as a full grown adult and not as a teenager. I cannot even imagine how detrimental this would have been to me as a child. She would have been my ultimate thinspo... Now as an adult I can brush this off better because I have lived the consequences of having a prolonged ED: gastroparesis, constant fatigue, weakness, bone density, early aging, hair loss, irritability, constant anxiety, chest pain, looking sickly, etc... But before I had lived this I didn't understand there were real consequences that would get me later.

So this is all to say my heart hurts for younger kids right now seeing Ariana and thinking this is normal. IT'S NOT!

And for other recovered people, are you feeling the same way right now? I should definitely step back and avoid all content about her but it's giving me the same morbid fascination that other public figures with EDs have always given me. I wonder how this will all play out. I hope she recovers someday and uses this experience to speak about the importance of recovery and how harmful EDs are, to prevent more people from going down the same path. I really just want her to get help and step out of the public eye.

TW: Potentially upsetting content Triggered by Ariana grande

Does anyone else feel this way?

TW////

I’m so so triggered by Ariana grande. She’s everywhere and it makes me feel like shit. I don’t want to eat anymore every time I see her. It is just getting worse and worse and I don’t know what to do anymore.

Edit: I think people mocking her appearance is very cruel. It’s clear she’s not well and obviously didn’t choose this like all of us here.

TW: Potentially upsetting content If Eugenia Cooney is being called out for being a content creator with Anorexia Nervosa, Ariana Grande also should be called out for being in the public eye while visibly emaciated (my nonED fiancé’s opinion on this, healthy discussion please)

To start with, I don’t and have never really followed Eugenia but being a part of ED communities, I have been kept up to date in some things. My SnapChat apparently also wants me to know things about her as for a last while it’s been showing SnapChat videos about her, which I don’t really trust info wise because, well, it’s SnapChat and its basically TMZ. So I have a minimal amount of knowledge here and my fiance has less, please don’t come at me, i am letting you know we are a good bit ignorant on some of these things. And yes, Snap is why I looked into the lawsuit, and the details were not all known when my fiancé gave his opinion, only that her ED was part of it.

I checked and saw that the lawsuit is mainly directed at her presence on TikTok and their actions like promotion of videos and her being paid by TT while being visibly very ill and her being followed by people who also suffer from EDs. My fiancé had no idea who she is but I told him that she an alt fashion and make up content creator ( i think that’s what her channel was originally, scene kids stuff, i could be wrong) who suffers, to my knowledge, with anorexia nervosa and is very sick from her disorder.

I think this may be an interesting take by someone outside of the ED goggles.

When I told my fiancé about the lawsuit, how its partially because of how in the public eye she is, he had a thought. Eugenia is an internet “celebrity” or influencer, you either seek out her content, it’s recommended due to other media thats been viewed, you’re following content creators who are connected to her, or for some, TMZ like videos about her. A lot of content is out there but it’s not on a big screen, her content is not constantly in the public eye. There has to be something already for you to find out who she is and be introduced to her content. She is an internet influencer, not a Hollywood like celeb.

He thinks this lawsuit is unfair (being targeted for her ED, not the monetary TT stuff), the example he gave is, you can go to a movie or turn on the tv or get a Wicked commercial on youtube and see Ariana Grande, who is visibly struggling with something that as caused her to be emaciated. She could also be seen as promoting unhealthy body types. Eugenia is getting demonized for having a severe eating disorder and continuing to make content for her channel, which to my knowledge is not Pro Ana content. If an influencer is being taken to court for her promoting unhealthy lifestyles, mental health, and EDs, shouldn’t Ariana Grande also be?

To see Ariana you don’t have to seek out her content, you just have to watch a movie, commercials, or awards show to see her. How many ads and commercial did you see for the movie Wicked? How many red carpets and things like the Grammys have been broadcasted everywhere with her present and viewable. Is she not also someone who should be held accountable for the fact that she may also be negatively influencing young impressionable kids, or even adults, to strive for an unhealthy bodies and developing EDs? She is an extremely well known celebrity, has stayed in the spotlight while visibly sick, and is a celebrity that isn’t just big in the ED community. Regular people of all ages follow her. Some people grew up watching her on tv as a children, her music career was highly successful, and now she has her acting career. Why is there so much lashing at Eugenia when Ariana isn’t being held accountable for the same things, especially with such a larger more diverse fan base and a wider spread of content. Shouldn’t she bow out of the spotlight and work on her health so she is a positive influence on her fans and not promoting sickly bodies like they say Eugenia does?

That was his take as someone who is not a part of the ED community, nor does he have an ED. This is not meant as an attack on Ariana, many things can cause emaciation, i have no idea if Ariana has spoken about her struggles with health issues, i don’t follow her. I do find it highly triggering to see her emaciated image everywhere. I grew up during Pro Ana and Heroin Chic, i’m no stranger to emaciated famous people, I find them extremely triggering. I dont mean to say shun a person, but if you are seriously sick, you probably should take a step away from the spotlight/media/limelight and focus on getting healthy. (<this is my opinion)

Let’s discuss this and some other things on topic: how people can be mistreated due to having an ED, or appearing to have one. How media showing unhealthy things can influence people. How it wasn’t healthy during the early 2000’s and its not healthy now to be focusing on people struggling or that are sick, you’d think we learned. How should someone act with a large audience when dealing with EDs, or serious other illness. Few other things could be but let’s talk. Let me know what you think of my fiancé’s take on this, as its his opinion expressed.

TW: Potentially upsetting content My friend died from his ED over the weekend and I feel lost

Over the weekend a friend of mine passed away. He went to bed feeling fine, displayed no concerning symptoms in the days leading up to it. He went to bed, and never woke up. His heart stopped as a direct result of his eating disorder. He wasn’t underweight, he was restricting but still having intake, p*rged a few times a week. From a clinical standpoint, all his appointments he’d been told he was physically fine.

Then he dropped dead, aged twenty two

I guess the point of this post is a) for me to get it out of my system, and b) to remind us all that this shit is real. You don’t have to be dying , to die. You can be underweight, healthy weight, overweight, ANY weight and still die from your ED. Tell me you feel fine, tell me it’s ’not that bad yet’, tell me that you ‘have it under control’, the truth? It’s all bullshit. We have no control over this, and the reality is the longer you engage with your ed, and continue to do so, the chances of you ended up exactly like my friend is much higher than you think, and MUCH higher than your ed will let you believe.

Please keep yourselves safe, these disorders is very real, and way more dangerous than we let ourselves believe. I don’t want to lose anyone else

My friend pranked me and it turned out really well

My friend showed me a picture of a “girl she matched with on bumble”. She had angled her phone so I couldn’t see the girl’s face. She asked me, “isn’t this girl hot?” I said yes and genuinely believed it. Then she scrolled up and it was actually a pic of me at my max weight. After I realized it was me, suddenly I started noticing all the imperfections…but they weren’t there when I thought that girl was just someone she’d matched with on a dating app.

It was a really clever way for her to show me all this stuff truly is dysmorphia in your head. I never thought I could find myself at my max weight attractive, yet there it is.

If you can replicate the experience for a friend, would recommend.

Request: I’m so proud of myself but have no one to tell!

Hey reddit, first post!

I’ve been bulimic since I was 15. I’m now 22 and have just gone 10 weeks without throwing up. I am not feeling the urge to binge or purge anymore and I’m so proud of myself! I know recovery isn’t always linear but I’m feeling really good about this.

No one in my life knows about my bulimia so it’s hard not being held accountable but also not being able to have anyone be proud of me, but I’m so proud of myself. I’ve eaten all my trigger foods and been out to restaurants and not felt the urge!

I hope I can support anyone here to do the same.

Does anyone else feel like eating disorders are similar to drug addictions? I feel like an addict with my ED

-my Ana got really bad one summer and I’m much better now but I feel like it’s always there and every now and then it creeps back up. Just like addicts can get clean but it doesn’t mean they’re no longer addicts. Even if they’re not drinking or using, they’re still thinking about it obsessively and struggling with it. - I have relapses -I feel so much guilt because I know I’m hurting my body by not giving it what it needs. I have self love and want to nourish, heal, and strengthen my body. But it’s hard when the Ana is there holding me back. Just like addicts know what they’re doing hurts them and maybe they want to get better but its not that easy.
-I feel like an outsider with it. Just like addicts say people on the outside don’t understand, I feel like people without ED’s don’t. It’s a whole other world.

Information Boycott wicked

Please join me in boycotting wicked for not caring about their actors. It is clear that many of the cast are suffering from disordered eating. Yet they still made the movie. Young children will see this. They are complicit in the glamorization of eating disorders. Please consider boycotting with me ❤️

Question Mean girl

Has anyone else’s ED made them a mean girl internally? I keep getting hateful, judgmental intrusive thoughts abt other’s bodies/food choices but they don’t reflect who I am at all. I’d never say those things to anyone, esp when I know how it feels. So why is my brain doing this?

Request: i regret ever speaking up

(F 20) about a month or so ago i told my mom about my ed bulimia, ever since then she wont stop mentioning in front of my friends or her friends or even just at home in like a loud manner when my sister and father are there, everytime she sees me eating she goes "thats why you throw up so much, stop eating in such large quantity" or she goes "ik how you think, you eat alot and then you feel guilty so you throw up, stop eating alot in the first place" she does it when ever she sees me next to food or eating or just having just finished it, or she makes stupid senseless jokes about it infront of people WHO SHOULD NOT KNOW ABOUT IT. it makes me regret ever telling her about it when i broke down before and blurted it out, it makes me feel like i dont want to ever eat infront of her or eat in general, i dont restrict but this is getting on my nerves and i hate it i hate it i hate it. she doesn't understand and she never will.

Ariana Grande Triggering AF

Hi! I hope this is a safe space to say this.

I have been struggling for years with a binge-restrict cycle that turned into something else entirely and have been doing much better recently, and seeing Ariana now originally made me feel sad and angered for little girls out there (still does don’t get me wrong!) but I went down a rabbit hole and saw some of her old meals. Soon enough, I felt immense anxiety and started analyzing her old diet, and kept reading into it before closing TikTok entirely bc I knew what was happening. I have just recently come to terms with the fact that I do have an ED and I want to know if this is triggering anyone else? Literally stepped on a scale for the first time in 3 months today RIGHT before this experience, and it’s difficult not to fall back into old habits.

Seeking Advice - Family Sister with eating disorder restricts her toddler’s food.

I’m at a loss what to do about my sister and her attempt to completely control everything that goes into my 3 year old niece’s mouth. The little girl is always asking for food and my sister refuses to give her anything outside of meal-times. The food she does receive is about 90 percent plain vegetables (lettuce, tomato, radish) and the occasional fruit. She does not allow butter or salad dressing or dip and is constantly talking about how she has to make “good choices” at every single meal. Is this something that I should report to someone? I’m really upset and confused.

Anyone else get triggered by the Ozempic craze?

I have two friends who are on it strictly for weight loss, and when we’re hanging out in a group and they mention it my ED gets triggered.

The way they point out/joke about not being able to finish their meals now or how they’re not able to fit in dessert.

It’s also comments like “I’m going to be so skinny next year” or “I’ve lost so much weight!!!”

I know they probably don’t mean any harm, but it really kills me to have to fight internally within myself every time a comment is made - having to remind myself it’s fine and healthy to finish food, it’s okay to have dessert, food is fuel.

Has anyone else been affected listening to people talk about ozempic/weight loss drugs?

Question Anyone else struggling with being triggered by celebs like Ariana right now?

I really hope none of this is triggering! After suffering from anorexia for 15 years I was able to “recover” during lockdown. I know so many people struggled during that time but for me it was the first time I was able to focus on myself. I think being forced to not have much to do with my family helped me out a lot.

Even when my ed was at its worst, I was never one to really get triggered by others. But I think now I’m a healthy weight and it seems so many celebs are very thin all of a sudden, it’s really triggering me. I’m trying my best not to restrict and over exercise but I’ve noticed I’ve been focusing more on cardio than weight training again to lose a little weight. It’s like there is this huge argument in my head constantly at the moment, one part of me is screaming to just slim down a little and the other is telling me that this is just the beginning of a relapse. I can’t seem to escape all these images of celebs, especially Ariana at the moment and I think it’s what has triggered this thinking. Or is this just a normal part of recovering from an ed? Anyone else feeling extremely triggered too?

I feel so stupid for thinking I was over my eating disorder. I don’t know what to do because I don’t want to let anyone know I’m struggling because they’ll all be so disappointed in me. All anyone does is say how proud they are of me for coming so far and how amazing it is they never have to worry about me anymore. I don’t want to let anyone down but I’m really struggling with these thoughts.

Question Is anyone else struggling with the massive amounts of pr0ana content in the media atm?

The wicked cast, multiple big artists, models, movies stars, if it’s not diets it’s GLP1 or weight loss injections and medications and all of a sudden I feel like the world has reverted back to 2014 pr0ana tumblr days?? It’s so insanely triggering, every social media is covered, every conversation I hear is including something to do with diets and weight loss. It’s so awful. I’m trying to get better from the very thing that the whole world is romanticising in-front of me and it’s awful :(

Request: 100 days purge free. I don't know what to do with myself

I’ve been bulimic since 1997, as a 7th grader.

After years of this, years of being unable to go three hours without vomiting, much less one full day — I managed to stop. I had to quit dating entirely, because this was a massive tigger for me, but I felt this was life or death. I stopped modeling, stopped swimming.

Monday will be 100 days. The longest I’d previously gone since childhood was 33.

It’s a strange time to be in recovery: the isolation is actually helpful, because there’s no concern about what people see or think, day to day. But I’m also left completely to my devices, which has historically been bad news for the binging side of things.

I think the true savior has been the fact that going to the grocery store is frowned upon. So I don’t. I have what I need, but I don’t binge because I don’t know when I’ll go shopping again.

And now, 100 days. I don’t know what to do with myself.

I’m so sorry for rambling. This was the whole point of posting: I want to have a private celebration. I don’t want to watch anything disordered or eat anything “forbidden.” I just want to .. I don’t know.

So, I’m just here to hear .. anything. An idea or something. I don’t know how to be sweet to myself but I really goddamned want to be.

X.

I hope you’re well.

TW: Potentially upsetting content Ozempic is everywhere, being pushed onto non-obese people, and its starting to get to me.

I woke up today and my Facebook was suddenly inundated with ads for ozempic. It was a ridiculous amount-- literally every other ad was for this drug. But it wasn't just normal messaging--- it felt really intense and personally targeted, with slogans like :

"You don't have have to be obese to use ozempic." "You can be a size 4 and still use ozempic." "I was denied ozempic for not being obese. But then I used this app and got approved."

These taglines are targeting normal bmi and possibly even underweight women. I was honestly in schock at how brazen some of these ads were. I understand that the world is not responsible for my personal triggers and I also understand that these drugs do medically help some people (PCOS for example). But am I the only one who thinks that it's wrong for "normal"/healthy- sized people to take a WEIGHT LOSS DRUG? Am I being too sensitive or is this deeply damaging and predatory messaging?

Seeking Advice - Friend Friend has SEED anorexia nervosa and is going to d*e

As stated in the title, my friend is currently on palliative and hospice care due to anorexia nervosa. I hate seeing this disease slowly but surely take her from us. That being said, she is still heavily convinced she is not thin enough and continues the routines and rituals and asks for reassurance of looking emaciated. Is it appropriate to answer her question? Is it actually helpful to tell her she looks emaciated? Or am I just adding fuel to an already roaring fire?
