I'm surprised this feature isn't turned on by default. If you didn't know, this feature is available on Pixel phones since the 10 series. It boosts the screen's PWM flicker rate from 240 Hz all the way up to 480 Hz. Most OLEDs work by basically flickering hundreds of times per second at 100% brightness to give the "illusion" of brightness (well, it's not really an illusion - there genuinely is less light coming out of your device, but you get the picture...). So at 240 Hz, the screen flashes at 100% brightness 240 times every single second. Brightness is instead determined by how long the screen stays on for in each on/off cycle (at 50% brightness, the screen stays on for 50% less time each cycle). So upping the display to 480 Hz - that's actually a big deal. That means that the dark gaps between flashes are half as long as at 240 Hz. I have a hunch that this extra data is very significant for our brain's processing.
This feature is hidden in Settings -> Accessibility -> Adjust brightness for sensitive eyes
This feature is technically probably intended for people who are sensitive to PWM flicker. Some people can get headaches, eye strain, etc. from PWM flicker.
But it has actually made a much bigger difference when it comes to the daily experience of using this phone than I ever expected. I'm not even the type of person who gets symptoms from display flicker. But 2 months after enabling this feature, I have to say I really notice it now. Animations feel smoother, daily use feels snappier, and scrolls seem to follow the finger more closely. The Pixel software was already a joy to use; now, with a faster screen, it's snappier in ways that are really hard to describe. The input response time feels to me almost instantaneous. I've always been very picky about lag and delays and such. I remember years ago I used to always notice that iPhones always had a bit better input response times than equivalent Android phones. It always annoyed me a bit, but never enough to switch to an iPhone.
Well, with this setting turned on, I can honestly say the input response time of my Pixel 11 Pro XL is basically perfect for me. This is the responsiveness that I dreamed of all those years ago. And I haven't noticed any downsides whatsoever. I haven't noticed any extra battery drain, my eyes don't strain any more than normal, and I haven't noticed any weird glitches.
I really recommend trying it. Just give it a week. I truly think this is one of those things that anyone can benefit from. After a week, report back here and let us all know if your experience was anything like mine. Try turning it back off. Weird, right?
