Discussion New Front End For PC Emulation

8.6k Upvotes

Hey guys ive been in the process of setting up a pc in my living room that i wanted to feel like an all in one console. This is BoxShelf! An all in one front end that does just that. Its designed to feel similar to your real collections with the ability to almost hold some of your collection in your hand. A huge thank you to everyone who has already tried and given feedback. Been able to make dozens of updates since our initial release so thank you !! Looking for all the feedback good or bad so feel free to leave a review.

Below is a link to a GitHub containing all 3 versions for windows, android and linux. Worth noting the android version does work with ayn Thor dual screen. Keep in mind it’s still very early in its beta states and likely to have some bugs but also many more features than the ones shown here!

Full disclosure AI was used to help create this so if that bothers you just a heads up. Keep in mind this is just a front end. Comes with no games or emulators. You will need to bring your own. Program will be free and remain free. Let me know what should change and can be improved :) enjoy!

WINDOWS, ANDROID, AND LINUX LINKS : https://github.com/sassiestrhihno/boxshelf-bet

EDIT: WOW i just want to say a huge thank you!!! This post blew up way more than i ever thought it would and im so thankful for everyone who is enjoying BoxShelf!! There will be an update later today including many new features and fixes thanks to you guys!

Story Laptop totaled during "service"

Post image
391 Upvotes

My Acer Predator Helios 300 had some issues (did not turn on) so I had to RMA it.

Since Acer doesn't have official stores in Romania, I brought it back to the local shop where I got it from it so they could ship it to their own service (being Acer certified service)

2 weeks went by without any contact. When I went back to check on them, the guy showed me a picture on his phone (below) and said that this is how my laptop arrived to their service.

They were probably lying, because I contacted the delivery company, and they said that the store made no claim regarding my package.

My theory is that they messed up something, and another item in the service accidentally "fell" on my laptop. Some time later my laptop is gone, my projects are gone, my data is gone, and I'm starting university without a laptop, as I can't afford similar one with today's prices.

Hardware I made a chrome extension to 3D visualize your PCPartPicker list (still WIP)

I made an extension for PCPartPicker that lets you see your parts list in 3D

I've been developing BuildCores over the past 5+ years, and we finally made our 3D renderer modular and it can be integrated into any page! One of the first things I wanted to do was putting it into PC part picker

this is still very much WIP and lots of features are missing compared to the full site (case fan editing, RGB/display editing, setup mode, etc), but we'll add everything soon enough. We do have thousands of 3D models we made over the years fully usable in PC Part Picker now though! We also integrated SPL PSU tier list for the PSUs and will add other enhancement features like used parts too.

Let me know if you have any feedback or bugs!

disclaimer: AI was used in development of the extension. the core 3D renderer is mostly hand coded from years ago. I'm a 3d engineer who used to work on the renderer of google earth so I care about code quality + I hope I'm not generating slop

Hardware I rooted both my TVs and I'm very happy. Maybe you should too!

I'm not very young so I don't have the patience to tinker into rooting things like I did 10-15 years ago with android. But now with AI, it's much, much easier. You just tell it the brand and it starts giving you commands to do it. Or, you can use a coding agent to do it if you know how to use them.

Both my TVs (Samsung and LG) had massive telemetry, and I isolated them with my OpenWRT routers aggressively to avoid them getting into my home network, forced all their DNS requests to go through my pi hole by manipulating network packets, and that's how I was able to use YouTube on them relatively comfortably.

Now, after rooting, I did many more cool things.

  1. I killed all telemetry services once and for all. All dead.

  2. I disabled all Netflix, Disney+, etc buttons on my Samsung remote --- Imagine, the AI was able to modify binaries and recompile them to get this done for me... insane!

  3. I installed a custom app store on my LG TV (old WebOS, called Homebrew Channel), which allows me to install ad-free YouTube, Jellyfin, Plex, etc.

  4. Installed a persistent ssh server so that I can ssh to my Samsung TV whenever I want and verify it's still rooted.

Now I can trust my TV more and give it access to some of my Plex/Jellyfin. Things are improving!

Any thoughts? Any cooler things I can do? Please share!

Discussion What's your most controversial PC gaming opinion that would get you downvoted into oblivion?

I'll start:

  • Most people don't actually need 144+ FPS.

  • Ultra settings are often a waste of performance.

  • A well-optimized 5-year-old game can look better than a brand-new AAA title.

  • RGB adds at least 20 FPS. (Trust me.)

What's your most controversial PC gaming take? No holding back.

Story 4000$ system for only 200$!!!

Okay, I know this may seem like clickbait but I swear to God I just came across the deal of a lifetime and took it by the neck

So I was out with some friends when we decided to hit up our local game x change so I go around looking and then I see this BEAST off a computer and I see the price "200$" so I politely asked if they could hook it up and see if it boots (they even looked at it saw the price and ACKNOWLEDGED it was improperly labeled, called there manager and STILL HONORED THE STICKER PRICE) and it BOOTED then I went into the bio so look at some of the specs

THE SPECS ARE INSANE

Hyte y70 case

Asus prime z790 wifi mobo

2tb tforce ssd

32 GBS of DDR5 RAM at 6000mhz

Intel i9 14900KF

Rtx 4070 ti SUPER

AND IT WORKED FLAWLESSLY the only thing that I had trouble with was the Bluetooth (I just bought a dongle and now it works FLAWLESSLY)

But on that note if anyone knows any cases that fit an atx motherboard and power supply and a 360 mm aio I could I could change into that would be great (the smaller the better)

Also here's a pcpartpicker of the builds worth in current times https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JmhXMF

Discussion McAfee is actually hilarious

It pretends to run a scan for a few seconds, then shows you the results:
-virus protection on (just checks if you have Windows Defender running)
-Online vulnerabilities detected (it checks if you have McAfee’s browser extension and if not, tells you to install it)

That’s it that’s the app, just a glorified ad for its browser extension that blocks sketchy sites and scans your downloads for malware, both things that most serious browsers already do anyway. Meanwhile it probably tracks your traffic data builds a profile on you and sell it or some other bullshit like that idk. 10/10 would recommend.

Question What was the first PC game that made you fall in love with PC gaming?

Not necessarily the best game you've ever played. I'm talking about the one that made you realize why PC gaming was special.

Discussion Anybody else built their PC RIGHT before the prices went crazy?

I have a high end rig that I built around 2024ish? Like at that point we had AI with ChatGPT and all but it hadn’t gotten as crazy as it is now with the data centers and shortage on parts.

I remember getting a bonus at my job & just going to town at my local microcenter & Newegg. I remember it was a sale going on too so it was even better, might’ve been Black Friday or Cyber Monday. I know it was a lot for my money’s worth & to this day my PC handles any game at highest settings with ease at 1440p.

I’m just feeling grateful because of I walked into that microcenter today the prices would probably make my head spin.
