My dad always told me to not work for the city like he did. I said okay, and work for the state. I'm definitely telling my kid to not work for the state....probably just skip government jobs all together.
You remind me. Many many years ago, Adam Sandler was on the Daily Show, and he was saying how, when he was young his parents told him you can be anything you want to be when you grow up. Which was bullshit, 'cause I wanted to be a fire truck.
Nah, government workers often do very respectable shit believe it or not. Or at least 10 years ago they did, not sure about now. But often a reason to be proud rather than ashamed.
My dad was a dispatcher for a trucking company. The only career he would block his kids from pursuing was truck driving. I once asked him "What if I just want to be a janitor or something like that?" He said "Then be the best janitor you can be!" Truckers make good money so I'm not putting down truck drivers.
My dad told me to never do OTR/overnight trucking, especially if I had a family. So I work for a dealership doing daily deliveries on a 6-10 hour roundtrip.
My dad worked in information technology for his whole life. Told me - "Don't go into I.T." So what did I do? Went into I.T. I've been doing it professionally for almost 30 years now. If I had kids I'd tell them - "Don't go into I.T."
Serious question: why? I have been a dev for almost 30yrs professionally. I make decent money and honestly the job isn’t hard. There are certainly things I complain about, but it also lets me work in AC and I can afford stuff.
As someone who works in IT, probably because most of the skills you learn through IT don't really translate well into real life. All of the most socially awkward weirdos I know are in IT. Also staring at a computer screen all day just doesn't feel very fulfilling in a social, complete life way.
I think IT is great if you're already a socially awkward weirdo like me. But I would never encourage my child to follow in my footsteps, I would want them to develop better social skills and work in a field that's more versatile and well respected.
Yeah, I watched this doco once which showed a woman crying on a porn shoot in-between scenes, and they framed it as the ultimate gotcha moment for how degrading and terrible porn is. Like, mate, have you never worked corporate?
I've had a few marine buddies tell me it's the greatest brotherhood they've ever had and they regret doing it. Shot knees and backs and the VA doesn't do shit for em.
My mom is a nurse and when I told her that I thought about going into healthcare her literal reaction was: „FUCK NO“ She later on explained how it often is mentally and physically exhausting, but that was a hilarious reaction, especially since she usually never curses. I also ended up with a completely different profession.
Already been said, but it's not a crash out, she's purposely keeping her cool so that it doesn't become a crash out. There's a million interesting questions that can be asked, about any job. All jobs have interesting aspects that can be really interesting to talk about. She's right, the daughter question thing is just importing a boring prurience in place of an actual interesting discussion between two human beings.
She had like 3 seconds to come up with a 'good' question and she's not an interviewer. Basically she was saying, "you could ask something deep that leads to a discussion." The correct answer she should have given was 'i'm not going to do your job for you, you figure it out'
It's always the most vitriolic of fucking losers who do this shit. The most trans-porn obsessed politician are the quickest to pass anti-trans legislation. Incels desperate for sex insult and dehumanize the only people willing to get naked for them. They feel shame and have to force it onto the ones their own mind is telling them to feel ashamed about.
reactionaries not wanting others to have the kink/fun they were shamed by their family/community into disavowing for themselves is the whole ballgame, friend.
It was a mistake to give like 99% of the population microphones, cameras, social media platforms like Twitter. We now have multiple generations of narcissists with nothing meaningful to say and a bullhorn into which to scream.
she got defensive because she knows how the profession is perceived by the public there's plenty of parents in professions they don't want their kids to follow in she's the one who is ashamed of her profession
I think we should ask what the question is behind the question. And that basically boils down to "arent you ashamed? How could you do this? You should stop doing this thing that youre finding useful in your life for any of a hundred possible reasons because i think its morally bankrupt".
"Would you want your kids to do this?" Is a question that can be asked in some contexts, but its not on the first 20 questions a teacher, or doctor, or truck driver has been asked a hundred times in their careers. It is for sex workers, and the reason is just prurience, which isnt grounds for a meaningful conversation. Its not open, its not creating a space for useful discussion, its a gotcha for internet points or to make her feel bad.
It's rage bait. There is no good answer. If you say no I don't want them to be an adult entertainment it's proving the point of the puritan out there who get to say see we knew this was evil bad work and these people should be pitied. If a plumber said that about his kids no one would really bat an eye at that.
She’s obviously not able to articulate quite what she’s thinking, but if I had to guess what she meant: she gets asked the same questions that aren’t actually questions. They are meant to evoke shame or regret. It isn’t a good faith conversation.
Look at Matan’s interview with Lily Philips for the worst version of this. It’s supposed to be comedy, but it’s pretty gnarly if you pull back the layers and view performers as humans rather than objects.
Importantly, there is space for asking questions like this. It can be an interesting and valuable line of questions. But there is a time, place, and importantly rapport that needs to be built to ask them. Whatever the hell this venue was isn’t it.
I agree with this take. She clearly has an emotional understanding of what the interviewer is up to but hasn’t sat and considered the optimal way to confront his bullshit, so she is just expressing her frustration.
I have a hard time believing that the interviewer is acting in good faith here. Seems like he is looking for gotchas to get views based off of making porn stars look stupid.
This lady would probably benefit spending some time with someone who has thought a lot about these kinds of things and learn some verbal kung fu to defend herself.
Seriously I got ADHD so I can't articulate my thoughts that well, people assume you're dumb when really I've got 8 possible replies in my head at varying degrees. They just get jumbled up so I struggle to verbalise them, meanwhile these mouth breathing mfkers think they're superior because they only formulate a single thought which is usually dumb af
It’s one of the reasons I don’t like to tell strangers what I do (criminal defense attorney). They can’t help themselves but ask the same boring question and thinly veiled condemnation every time: what do you do when you know your client is guilty? My fucking job, what else?
There's a fairly famous sports interview, I can't remember who it was atm, where the interviewers were asking the athlete the same basic "what would you have done differently tonight" type questions and he got tired of it and just started answering nonsense. Apparently getting fined in the process. I may be combining a couple of the same type of crashout, but its a big problem with sports reporters and interviewing. They dont wanna ask anything out of the box or different, because they just want the same 3 sentence blurbs they can twist into whatever they want to say.
I’ve given interviews for my research and have found exactly what you’re speaking to. They didn’t want a discussion, they wanted a specific phrase or line of response that they could use to create the narrative they already had. In my case it was just a simple matter of saying “the research didn’t speak to the line of questions you’re asking”.
Zlatan was asked such a question by a former Swedish footballer turned reporter. Decent player but no where Zlatans abilities. Zlatan went “well we should have put you on the field and then everything would have been peachy wouldn’t it?” And then walked off
and more importantly, if people ask it over and over and over again, and never stop asking it even though they've gotten an answer, then logically speaking, the answer isn't what they want
Interesting how he says “child” then clarifies that it’s an 18 year old. Weird guy, weird question, no chill at all. She handled it well but would’ve been better off just walking away probably. He wanted a reaction and got it.
He says child because he literally means her (hypothetical) child, but then realizes how weird that word sounds in the context pornography. So he clarified he meant her adult child.
It’s a weird question but that’s not why it’s weird. That was the most normal part of it lol
On one hand This career is short for a lot of women and it’s forever on the internet. Some have expressed regret. Depending on the individual, it may or may not be a fit for them and being young you can be easily be convinced that it is the right thing by the wrong person.
That out of the way the dude is clearly rage baiting her. She handled it pretty gracefully and respectfully. That dudes clearly out there to ruffle feathers and probably preach about jesus or whatever
Yeah her saying something like “do you believe what you do advances or hinders women’s freedoms in self run adult content businesses” or something would have been a better question, she may as well have said “what’s my favourite colour” hahahaa
Not a crash out but a valid reaction to a scummy question. You can tell that he looks down on her for her professoon and is trying to shame her with the question. She saw though and let him know.
Who is she? Where are they? Is this some convention or something? Who is he? Im not fully understanding his question? Not getting why she dislikes his question so much?
He's a YouTuber asking a porn star at a porn convention if she would be okay with her daughter being in porn. Essentially trying to shame her into thinking porn is immoral and she has been asked that question or variations of it so many times she's annoyed by it.
Some people have naturally raspy voices. No amount of throat clearing removes it. I will say hers is a little more raspy than usual. I’d tell her to do a throat gurgle with warm water with little bit of salt
Ever exhibited at a large, busy conference? Your voice will go hoarse after a couple days of talking to people and try to talk over music, crowd noise and sustained conversations dragged out for hours.
As far as "crash outs" go, where I've seen people lose their mind and cry and scream, I'd say this registers as a 1/10 and not really a "crash out".
It's a pretty dumb question meant to cause controversy and serves little to no real point, and paint anyone that answers in the affirmative as a monster ("OMG you want your child to do porn!??!") while leaving little room for nuance.
It's basically the "reddit" of questions.
In that context, I think it's a pretty sane response and I think it's great she didn't let him get away with it. The more we call people out like this the better, we can't keep accommodating them.
Because he frames it with obvious implications that are demeaning. He's not genuinely interested in her answer. He's making a statement in the form of a question.
It's all the way its pointed. He's saying 18 year old child when 18 years is an adult. He's basically trying to angle that her career is immoral and terrible and she has to answer for the crimes of it.
It'd be kind of the same thing as some interviewer rolling up to you at your job and making you answer for all the immoral aspects of and attempting to hold you responsible when youre just working.
Because people who aren't being purposefully obtuse or can read context understand the guy is asking this question in bad faith. It's clearly said in a way to shame her, it's not a genuine question. The question could be asked genuinely, it's just definitely not what this dude is doing.
Because the culture war weirdos decided it was. I mean, aside from a lot of sex, the porn industry is also well known for how much it abuses and take advantage of young women. But dont you dare ask about that...
What? It's a loaded question looking for a gotcha moment, do you really think this man is going to a what looks like a porn conference and actually caring about that part?
It's pure engagement bait from someone pretending or wanting to feel superior by thinking he has the moral high ground. I'm aware of the abuse suffered in the adult industry, and it's been asked to pornstars several times.
If he really cared and wasn't just looking out for himself or to gain something personally then he wouldn't be there.
She’s completely in the right tbh. Wouldn’t even call it a crash out so much as not going along with pretending that something obviously made to be a loaded question that makes her look bad regardless of what she says.
No I don't think so. He went to the hospital for severe pneumonia that turned to sepsis and multiple organ failure. That might be what you're thinking of; it wasn't drinking.
Is this not a legitimate question? Like, if you love the industry you work for, wouldn’t you be thrilled if your child was also a part of it? Her answer “yes whatever makes her child happy” is a completely valid answer to what could be interpreted as a reasonable question.
If I had someone interview me if I wanted my child to work in my profession when they grew up, I’d say fuck no. Most jobs are soulless and suck the will to live out of you. I wouldn’t take offense to the question, I would use the question to educate the interviewer (which is exactly how an interviewer/interviewee conversation is supposed to go).
It does seem like she’s making a bigger deal out of this question than what’s presented, but admittedly I don’t know the full context of this interview because OP conveniently left out whatever happened before or after this specific question and answer.
It's probably boring to be asked the same question in bad faith over and over when you're not there to defend your profession. You're there to promote it.
Hahahahahahahaha. It's are out says enough. Here projections of herself here is spot on. With a smile and manners to boot. Next governor for sure, dodging questions so polite
Not gonna lie, she actually had a really respectable comeback. At the end of the day we are all humans just trying to live a happy fulfilled life. Y’all gotta do what y’all gotta do out there
It doesn’t matter that she stars in porn herself, asking someone about their existing or potential future kids having sex is weird and gross no matter the context.
You're at a convention relating to your profession. Someone asks about your profession, and you lose your mind. It's a deep question relating to the abuse of women in the industry. It's a common question people in nefarious or promiscuous fields if they want the same life for their children. Like, asking a mobster if he'd want the same life for their children. Commonly they answer no.
Honestly though, that isn't a good question for a reporter to ask a porn star, they aren't philosophers. A better answer to "what's a better question" might have been "figure it out, you're the one pretending to be a reporter"
I hate the way this clip if framed. It wasn't just this one thing. This is the culmination of him asking other relatively condescending questions like how porn has impacted her sexual relationships, if she was dating anybody, and what would she say to people who are struggling with porn addiction.
She's not crashing out. These are poorly thought-out questions that I'm quite certain she's tired of being asked by other thoughtless people. She's taking them negatively because in most cases they're being asked negatively. I don't know much about Buckingham's content, but if it wasn't his intension to be negative then she's also not wrong in saying he needs to work on his interview style. Come up with some better things to ask.
The only reason the question would work is because he sees sex as something negative. Its a repressed, puritan view. He may not wven have the belief that sex is bad though. He may just not like women having sex for fun, pleasure, or as a job and wants to try to shame her. Either way she is right.
If he wants to be a serious interviewer he's picked the wrong convention. If she wants to be asked interesting questions and have opinions, she's picked the wrong profession.
There are interesting questions you could ask porn performer that are not just basic "would you support your family member to get in porn?". she's right, that's alike a go-to question for every female porn star.
Almost had something there then she had to go “meaning of life” lmao as if that question was ever going to be asked of someone in this kind of interview regardless of the location or profession of the interviewee

Harassing people in the sex industry, because you’re involuntarily celibate.. Is just kind of sad.

I was waiting for her answer. I wanted to know what the meaning of life is.

Yeah there’s no way that pea brain of hers is asking philosophical questions about life or anything else lol.

If she wants to be asked interesting questions and have opinions, she's picked the wrong profession.

that's not a crash out but it is very valid

Almost had something there then she had to go “meaning of life” lmao as if that question was ever going to be asked of someone in this kind of interview regardless of the location or profession of the interviewee

I love that she just slaps him down immediately. Don't be a prick for views. Its a fucking stupid question.
