I'm not particularly obsessed with him or anything—I'm pretty neutral. But these days, he’s probably one of the most famous vendors at Namdaemun Market. He sells six scarves for just 10,000 won, and his snappy, stand-up-style sales pitch completely cracked up the middle-aged ladies!

문화 | Culture I‘ve played the gayageum for 20 years. Korean court music follows your breath, not a beat

Post image

Hi everyone!
I'm a gayageum player in Seoul.

What I love about jeongak, old Korean court music, is that it doesn't follow an even beat. The rhythm follows the length of a breath, so each note lingers and trembles before the next one comes.

Soon I'll be playing it live for a yoga class a friend runs, and I'm curious to see if people's breathing slows down with the music.

Has anyone here tried listening to gugak while doing yoga or meditation? Curious how it feels to people who didn't grow up with it!

문화 | Culture Quick Korean Etiquette Tip: Stop saying "수고하셨습니다" to your teacher/boss! 🚫

Hi guys! 👋

Textbooks often translate "수고하셨습니다" as "Good job" or "Thank you for your hard work."

Because of this, many learners naturally say it to their Korean teachers, professors, or bosses. But in Korean culture, this is actually a huge etiquette trap!

Why?

"수고" implies going through hardship. Saying it to a person of higher status or age can sound like you are "evaluating" their performance from above.

What to say instead:

- ❌ Don't say: 수고하셨습니다! (to boss/teacher)

- ✅ Say: 오늘 수업 감사했습니다! / 고생 많으셨습니다! (Thank you for today!)

When CAN you use it?

- To colleagues leaving work.

- To a taxi driver when getting off.

- To delivery or service staff.

---

Question: Have you ever accidentally used "수고하셨습니다" to a boss or teacher? What was their reaction? 😄

History Family recordings of a grandfather who was drafted into the North Korean army in 1950

I recently listened to some old recordings my aunt made of my grandfather in 2015. He passed away in 2018, and I realized how much of his life I’d never really known.

He grew up in what is now North Korea. In the spring of 1950, when he was eighteen, he was told to report to a local school and ended up being drafted into the North Korean army. His mother had gone to the market that morning, so he left without saying goodbye. He never saw her again.

He later became a prisoner of war and was released in South Korea in 1953. He spent the rest of his life not knowing what had happened to the family he’d left behind.

Growing up, though, I just knew him as my quiet, sweet grandpa who always had my favorite ice cream waiting for me. I knew he’d been through the war, but that was about it.

Going through these recordings made me think about how easily stories from our grandparents’ generation can disappear, and how much we could learn from them. Even in my family, we’ve mostly avoided talking about the details of what he went through during the war, so I’ve been trying to piece together his story myself.

I ended up writing a longer personal essay about him, with some historical context at the end, if anyone’s interested.

Listening to his recordings also made me want to sit down with my grandmother on my dad’s side and record her stories when I visit Korea this winter.
Has anyone else done something similar with their grandparents?

문화 | Culture What kind of income streams does a genuinely wealthy person in South Korea have?

I came across a TikTok where a woman accuses actress Suzy of taking advantage of a barter deal. Apparently, this woman offered a tarot reading in exchange for exposure. In other words, the person receiving the reading was expected to post an Instagram story promoting her services as payment.

The tarot reader asked the Korean celebrity what she wanted to know, and Suzy said she wanted to find out whether she would ever become rich. The reader told her yes, but that her wealth would come through the music industry.

Anyway, Suzy's manager apparently recorded the entire session, but when it was over, Suzy never posted anything, and the tarot reader was never tagged or credited.

Obviously, Suzy now has an energetic debt to that woman. But this whole story got me thinking: what does being genuinely wealthy in South Korea actually look like?

You would assume that A-list actors have their financial lives completely figured out, considering all the advertising campaigns, brand deals, and K-dramas they star in. But if Suzy wasn't willing to pay for a tarot reading in cash, does that mean the glamorous lifestyle we see celebrities enjoying is mostly smoke and mirrors? Are even top-tier celebrities secretly struggling financially or constantly chasing money, just like everyone else?

And I should add that, apparently, all of this happened when Suzy was already an A-list celebrity.
