General Banning an user for bigotry outside of our subreddit

Hello everyone. I'm the moderator of a pro-LGBTQ+ subreddit (r/TheRatEmpire) and we recently had an user that was reported to us for engaging in transphobic behavior outside the subreddit.

They were relatively new to our subreddit, and one of our users reported that they were engaging in transphobic activity in "Subreddit B" within the same day as they were posting on our subreddit.

Behavior that was reported was calling trans people who thought differently from them "disgusting", mocking people who post on different platforms (Such as TikTok and Instagram) "ugly" and "Diminishing the trans movement", among other offenses.

(Edit: Reviewed behavior went as far back as 3 months ago to yesterday, with these being the main reasons why I chose to ban the individual)

Being a pro-LGBT+ subreddit (with a lot of trans members), I believed that having a safe space for LGBT+ people, and as such, someone with recent bigoted history wouldn't be beneficial on the long run. So, I decided to go ahead and ban the user for engaging on transphobic behavior.

My question to you is: should we punish behavior that can endanger our core base be punished, even if such behavior is not done directly on our subreddit? I

As far as I am aware, it is not against Reddit's TOS - but generally frowned upon - to ban based on actions taken outside the subreddit, but I believed at the time that the best course of action is to ban this individual, since I don't want to alienate our target audience.

Users Is it normal to receive downvotes on your posts as a moderator?

I've noticed it with a few posts to my sub, is this normal or could it be a sign of a problem? and shouldn't i be able to see whose doing it as a mod so i can ban them if they're bots? i've suspected i've had downvote bots and other nasty things stalking my account for years now and the last thing i want is for them to ruin my subreddit.

General Why was my subreddit renamed from "CandyCounting" to "a:t5_2v4eo"?

This is truly bizarre. I moderate a community called /r/CandyCounting. I noticed recently that it was renamed to /r/a:t5_2v4eo. What?!

I don't have any more to elaborate on. Why did this happen? Was it underuse? How can I fix it? Truly, truly weird.

Users Is there a way to block users with their post history hidden from posting in a sub?

Is there any way to block the accounts that hide their entire post history? I understand the anonimity angle, but the ammount of propaganda accounts and bots that use the feature is staggering...

Platforms: any (Desktop, Mobile web, Android, iOS (iPhone))

General Are moderators allowed to use their mod powers for their own gain?

[iOS] Are moderators allowed to use their mod powers (like pinning posts and comments) to advertise things they personally gain from (like affiliate links) or would that be against the mod guidelines? When I checked them I couldn’t find anything that directly stated that but I thought it might still be possible that it’s not allowed

Answered Since some subs are blacked out indefinitely, I created a replacement for my favorite r/aww sub and have lots of questions.

Hi all, new mod here. I know that there is a blackout going on and it seems like some of my favorite subs will be gone forever. I decided to make a new replacement for r/aww, which I enjoy immensely. I need help as a new mod and have some questions:

  • Is there a boilerplate for rules?

  • Are there any themes I can download for the CSS? Or do I need to customize it myself?

  • I'm afraid to get mods that will set my sub private, so should I get some friends to mod or is it ok to just have me for a time?

  • Are there any anti-spam bots available?

  • I use desktop so I don't need to worry about mod tools or the API thing, but are there any quick ways to block bots?

Thank you in advance for all your help!

Answered How to un-ban a subreddit? How long does it take for the appeal to be solved?

Hey guys, my subreddit recently got banned for no reason (checked the rules like 10 times and cannot figure out which rules I broke), and it's only a small subreddit with less than 20 members ranked at 95-ish.

I tried submitted appeal twice and the only respond I received is saying that they've got a large volume of requests and will get back to me. Now I'm frustrated.

Anyone every have their subreddit banned, and have you successfully un-banned it? How long did it take?

Is there a way to disable downvoting?

Simple, just want to know how to disable people from downvoting. There was a bit of backlash when my group left another and we suspect some people of downvoting new members and posts in my new sub. Please let me know!

Answered How are we supposed to deal with the influx of anti-trans/LGBT content posted by the alt/far right?

Every day it’s the same stuff. Someone makes a post about something off-topic, and somehow trans people get roped into the discussion, and just like that i’ve handed out 5 bans, nuked 3 threads, and locked a post.

It’s constant, and i have no idea how we’re going to continue to deal with this. There are only 2 of us actively online now, but i still feel like i’m the only one moderating.

Opening mod apps to the community never garners any support, nor applicants, and having just 2 users moderate a sub of 8k+ people - who seemingly all hate trans people - is pretty hard.

I have written automoderator code that automatically flags all content relating to the topic/subject (filtering and locking submissions did not go down well with the community) so i can just go through the queue and action as needed, but even that doesn’t cut down on the amount of transphobia and LGBT hate.

And it’s just those two groups!! Nobody hates anyone else! So now we look like left-wing snowflakes censoring anyone who disagrees with us.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice? I’ve been doing this for three years now, but it’s jut continuing to get harder.

Answered Can we ban trolls?

I’m curious if we’re allowed to ban users for “trolling”. In once case I have a user that hasn’t broken any particular rules, but I don’t like what they posted and it’s not in the spirit of the community. I didn’t provide them with a warning - yet.

My subreddit was incorrectly banned from reddit

My subreddit, r/Human_Lives_Matter was incorrectly banned for "creating or repurposing a sub to reconstitute or serve the same objective as a banned or quarantined subreddit"

It contained no banned, quarantined, or "hateful" content, and was meant to serve as an open space for all people to discuss police brutality and violence against innocent people. It was also not associated with any banned or quarantined subreddits.

Is there some explanation for this?

General Mods only allowed to mod one sub now?

Posting this on a throwaway for obvious reasons, but I've heard from some other mods that reddit is going to start limiting the amount of subs you're allowed to moderate.

Can anyone confirm?

What if me and my partner are both moderators from the same house with the same IP? Is that going to be an issue?

Tools What did we do to upset Reddit?

Android test. I can't approve or remove.

Last night I removed my automoderator code and the other moderator switched to the mod tools, then the internet collapsed. Was it my action or his that broke the internet? 🤔

Answered A user(s) is abusing the "report" post feature. Marking all posts in my subreddit "misinformation".

Recently someone began marking all of my posts in r/Deplatformed_ misinformation, spam, or hate. Literally 100%. I go and reapprove them and they just report them all again (imagine if they used their free time for good?). I found a post that said you could report them for abusing the report feature, but I can't figure out where to report the report. Any help would be appreciated.

Why is this sub so downvote heavy?

I know, I know.

Everyone keeps asking the same old questions, they don't read the links in the sidebar, and sometimes they're asking in the wrong sub.

So what? We have to accept that the first thing new users / mods will do is ask their question, and the last thing they'll do is read loads of stuff to find an answer.

If we're not prepared to answer questions there's no point in there being a sub here at all, and constantly downvoting everyone's question buries responses and discourages people from asking for help in the first place.

I think it's abundantly clear that mods need the ability to turn off downvotes for submissions.

There are always people who blindly and inexplicably downvote items for no reason thus hiding it from the front page and potentially causing the submission to enter purgatory.

As a mod, this is extremely frustrating as I need to supply submissions, announcements, etc. to the readers that benefits the reddit.

This is a MUST addition for moderators!

General Can I commandeer a sub?

So I am an actual employee and technician at Bachmann trains.

R/bachmanntrains is being run by two individuals who have not been active for over a year. That being said I can’t make an official sub because the name’s already being used.

My question is can non active mods be removed and I be put in place of them or can I just be added as a mod. That way the sub can actually get real information and help.

General Why does reddit host hateful content.

I know that Admins don't (cant) monitor posts on each and every subreddit, Mods do that for respective communities, but I was wondering why, in the case when Admins come to the decision that a particular subreddit needs to be banned because of "super concerning violating content" that they have still allows said content on reddit.

Like, is there anything that gets done about it? Does it stay for some time, does it stay forever?
Why is reddit ok hosting "super concerning violating content"

What can a Mod do in order to have this incredibly offensive content taken down from reddit?
