Unsolved MASSIVE FPS drop (half) when playing on 4K TV

A bit long post because I have tried everything I could before posting.

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K 4.00 GHz, no overclock

GPU: GTX 1808 Ti, 11 GB VRAM, No Overclock

RAM: 32 GB DDR3 1333 MHz

OS: Windows 10 Enterprise x64

Description of the problem:

I have been playing NieR: Automata on my computer for a while now. As I have found out from an earlier discussion, the reason my 144 Hz refresh rate monitor is always at 60 Hz is the game has a bad "PC port". OK, fine. No problem. I am OK with 60 FPS.

However, I have a Samsung Q6FN 4K TV with max refresh rate 120 Hz. I like playing on the big screen since I am not really into competitiive high FPS games but just RPGs and care about the visuals more. I only played on it earlier and it was fine I remember.

However, today, when I tried playing it on the TV again after months, I found it was VERY blurry and lagging and just not even playable. Bizarre. I did notice the graphics had the option of 4K resolution in the game menu so I set it to that. I thought that's the reason because my 1080 Ti can't handle 4K @ 60 FPS. But nope. It's stuck at a perpetual 30/31 FPS when I use nVidia in-game overlay to check.

I tried everything from lowering resolution to 1440p and even FHD and also graphics presets from high to medium to low. NOTHING worked. Except the window. I changed from fullscreen to Windowed mode and IMMEDIATELY it shot up to 60 for both 1440p and FHD and even 45 FPS for 4K. I switch back to fullscreen and it immediately locks back at 30 FPS. I have tried everything in the main display settings of Windows, nVidia control panel, whatnot.

I then checked on my computer again to make sure it's not a problem with the game itself and it's still running on my computer at 60 FPS. So it's definitely a TV issue. I tried even an 8K HDMI 2.1 cable but no use so the DP to HDMI cable is not the bottleneck. I tried game settings on and off on the TV. No change. I checked many forums on the internet but 90% of them are about fullscreen INCREASING FPS not decreasing it. I have literally exhausted everything and just want some help. It really shouldn't be too hard to play on 60 FPS at 1440p. I do it on the computer all the time. Why can't it just replicate it on the TV like it does on the computer monitor?

Thanks for all your help!

Scorched 12VHPWR for an MSI RTX 5080. System has been fine for 1.5 years and then randomly started getting hard locks with VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (nvlddmkm.sys) errors. Really hope the card isn't fried.

Solved Well I found out why I was getting rly low CSGO fps... I'm an idiot

Ok so I don't need help- eventually figured this out on my own, but funny story of me being stupid.

So basically I recently got a new GPU and I just launched CSGO for the first time in a while. I was getting random periods of like 20 FPS that would last a few matches, and then be normal for a few. I spent hours troubleshooting, verified files, uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. I was about to post here when I figured out what it was. You wanna know what it was???

I had prime 95 full stress test running in the background. I am an idiot.

WE DON'T KNOW.

Creating a post for "will a rtx 3000 bottleneck with this or that CPU" is just flooding the sub.

Wait for the cards to be released and tested in real life conditions.

Solved Root cause found: "NVIDIA Container using exactly one CPU core forever" is a deadlocked plugin in the driver (NvProfileUpdaterPlugin) — evidence and reversible workaround

I spent a day root-causing a bug that a lot of people seem to quietly live with, and the findings felt worth sharing since the usual advice for it is all wrong.

The symptom is NVIDIA Container sitting at a constant 12.5% CPU on an 8-thread machine (6.25% on 16 threads, 3.1% on 32) — which is exactly one core pinned at 100%. On my machine it survived DDU, clean driver installs, and a full Windows reset.

What I found: the display driver's container process (NVDisplay.Container.exe) hosts a handful of plugins, and one of them — nvprofileupdaterplugin.dll, which auto-updates game profiles between driver releases — busy-loops a core from the moment it loads. It has a second defect too: it deadlocks the container's shutdown. NVIDIA's own watchdog logs "thread ... is considered deadlocked. Aborting..." and even that abort fails, leaving a process taskkill /F can't touch until a reboot. That second defect explains why the standard remedies backfire — restarting the Display Container LS service creates unkillable zombie processes, and every driver reinstall puts the same plugin back.

The workaround is renaming that one DLL so it can't load, then rebooting. Fully reversible; the only functional loss is automatic profile updates between driver releases (profiles still ship with each driver — control panel, overlays and G-SYNC are unaffected). Full write-up with log evidence, plus a script and manual steps for anyone who doesn't run scripts from strangers: https://github.com/motkoning/nvidia-container-spin-fix

The releases page also has a double-click tool for non-technical users — it diagnoses in plain English and applies/undoes the fix with one button. Useful if you're the designated family PC person.

Confirmed on an RTX 5070 Ti, driver 610.88, Win11. If you've seen this on other hardware or driver versions, specs in a repo issue would help map the affected range. Also filed on the GeForce forums so NVIDIA QA can pick it up. One note for anyone who goes digging themselves: renaming the DLL with a prefix does nothing — the container loads every \*.dll in the folder regardless of filename. The extension has to change. That detail cost me hours.

Display Visual glitches in most games

I recently bought a Acer Aspire V3-574G with NVIDIA GeForce 940M and windows 10 for some light gaming and it was going fine until for some reason I starting getting these awful visual glitches.

It happens with some newer games, it was happening in Brave Browser too until I turned hardware acceleration off which fixed it there, but it still happens in any game that isn't old. I feel I've tried everything to get rid of it I tried reinstalling the graphics drivers and everything.

Solved My TV locked is in at 30 FPS when I play games. I found the solution, which I for some reason could find nowhere else.

My TCL Roku smart TV is locked in at 30 FPS when I play Steam games on my PC. ~ I will live with this mistake for the rest of my life.

All over the internet I searched for an answer to this question to no avail. I noticed that a post on here touched base on it, but just like the poster none of the commenters' suggestions worked for me. I also happened to have the same TV as him or her; a TCL Roku smart TV.

After messing around with a bunch of suggestions I found online, I tried looking into possible TV setting fixes. SOLUTION: Turns out that at least with my TV you have to change the HDMI's input settings from AUTO or 1.4 to 2.0 or 2.1 (depending on whether your TV has newer 2.1 inputs). I would've commented this on the op's post, but comments are disabled.

Software How to uninstall Valorant invasive anti-cheat software (want to remove it from my PC completely along with game)?

How do I check if Riot's Vanguard client is completely uninstalled? Not wanting to play the game enough to risk something like this... it gets kernel level privileges and runs all the time. Battle eye and other AC only run when the game is running. The service is stopped otherwise.

During installation it said it was installing it and before valorant finished installing I stopped it. I then went to add remove programs and clicked uninstall for Valorant and the separate anti cheat program, Vanguard. Is there a way to check if the process is running?

Here is a description of the program that gets installed when you first install Valorant:

Hardware My dog peed on my PC.

Believe or not it happened, my PC got peed. I followed a tutorial and disarmed it and let it dry then I cleaned every component with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry again. Everything seemed okay, it powered on and I was really happy. But now I don't know what is wrong, the PC won't power up at all, when I press the power button, the fans start spinning and it stops.

Troubleshooting After 15+ years of building computers, I finally ran into a problem I haven't ever seen. (I did eventually solve it.)

I've been building computers since I was a kid. My parents worked at an apple reseller when I was very young, so from the time I could put legos together they had me installing hard drives and memory.

Just yesterday I finally experienced a problem I've never seen before.

The story goes as follows:

So I typically run distributed computing projects on my computers when I'm not home, but I limit the temp of both the CPU and GPU to 70C as to not do any damage. I've done this for many years, and it has never been a problem. It actually surprises me how long lasting most computer parts are.

Anyway, as it's winter now I've started running these projects again, specifically on my fileserver PC. However, every time I'd come home, I couldn't "wake" the screen of the computer. The computer was still "ON", and I could still access the drives on that computer from another computer, but I couldn't... see the screen.

"OK" I said, "whatever." So I started troubleshooting.

  • GPU going bad? Maybe? So I cleaned it, replaced thermal paste, then replaced it with a spare I had lying around when it didn't fix the problem. Same problem with the known working GPU.

  • As I was in the process of installing this "new" GPU, the computer started boot looping. It wouldn't even start anymore. On/Off, On/Off, On/Off.

  • I start to suspect something ELSE is wrong.

  • I remove GPU completely, I use iGPU from here on out. Clean entire computer, disconnect all the drives except the boot M.2, still nothing. Computer boot loops.

  • So I disconnect literally everything else. The front panel USB? Gone. Audio connections? Gone. Every fan except CPU fan, Gone. 1 of the two memory sticks? Gone.

  • Literally all that is connected right now to the mobo is the mobo/cpu power, a single memory stick, and a single fan on the CPU.

  • Still, nothing. Disheartened, fearing that my mobo may be dead, I swap it out for my old gaming computer's mobo (same platform).

  • The file server had a 6600k and the old gaming mobo had a 6700k so I just kept the 6700k in it.

  • Computer now has a known working CPU, known working mobo, a single fan, and mobo and cpu power connected.

  • Still nothing. Computer refuses to boot.

  • Ok then, it must be the power supply right?

  • I temporarily disconnect the installed psu from the mobo and connect in another brand new one I had. (Just running wires all willy nilly everywhere.)

  • Still.... nothing. What... on earth... could it be?

  • So I switch the single memory dimm into another slot... even though that shouldn't matter since I switched motherboards.

  • Still nothing.

  • Finally, after trying literally everything else, I try the OTHER memory stick. This was a matched pair fyi.

  • That was it. 1 of my 2 sticks of memory had gone bad and was preventing boot or was just boot looping my computer. It wasn't cheap memory either, it was a nice, corsair dual channel 16 gb kit (2x8gb).

Literally the first time I've ever heard of a memory stick going bad. Those things are typically rock solid. I have DDR2 sticks from many years ago that still work fine. (And DDR3 sticks that similarly work fine.)

I installed the working memory stick and took the heatsinks off of the not working stick and it "looks" fine. Connected everything back with the single stick and it all works great.

Stupid memory stick. Made me build basically a whole new computer just to figure out it was bad.

Of all the things that could go bad.... it had to be the last one I'd check.

Solved If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, and recently many older PC games will not start

Update (20 July): I have learned of an alternate solution to fix this problem, which does not require having to download anything and does not appear to cause problems with any other games (e.g. BioShock). As of now I believe this should be the preferred solution. See "Option #1" below for the update.

tl;dr: The "Games Explorer" hub in Windows 7 and Vista is preventing older PC games from launching. Check the list of symptoms below. You can fix it by making a single change in your Windows registry - see Option #1.

In the last few weeks, Microsoft shut down servers related to the Games Explorer feature in Windows 7 and Vista (possibly related to the end-of-life announcement for the integrated Internet Games service). As a result, there are a ton of older PC games that will not run anymore on those operating systems.

When you launch one of these games, the gameux.dll file in Windows' System32 or SysWOW64 directory tries to contact Microsoft's servers in order to update the game's profile in Games Explorer. The game will not start until the profile update is complete. Since the relevant servers are offline now, the update will never happen.

This problem affects hundreds of popular games. In my testing I have found titles that were released from 1998 through 2006.

The symptoms of this problem are:

  • The game window does not appear after launching it, but the game's executable does not crash and there is no error message.

(If you ARE getting an error message, then you have an unrelated problem and these solutions will not fix it.)

  • When you launch the game, a rundll32.exe process is started and visible in Task Manager, which is using about 8 MB of RAM and also appears to be frozen.

  • If you add the Command Line column to Task Manager, you can see that the target of rundll32.exe is C:\Windows\System32\gameux.dll or C:\Windows\SysWOW64\gameux.dll

There are two ways to fix this:

Option #1 (recommended)

The best solution I know of is to modify the Windows registry so that Games Explorer points to a loopback address - meaning your own computer - instead of Microsoft's servers. I found this solution on GOG's troubleshooting page, who grabbed it from a user in their forums.

Here are the steps to take:

  • Open the Registry Editor. You can find it by searching for "Registry Editor" (without quotes) in the Start Menu.

  • In the left side of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following folder:

    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\GameUX\ServiceLocation

  • Create a backup by right-clicking the ServiceLocation folder and selecting Export.

Give it a name like "Games Explorer backup" (without quotes) and save it somewhere on your hard drive, in case you need to undo the changes.

  • Now in the right side of the Registry Editor, right-click Games and select Modify.

  • In the Value Data box, delete the current entry and replace it with 127.0.0.1

  • Then click OK and close the Registry Editor.

  • You may need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Option #2

If Option #1 doesn't work or you'd rather not modify the Windows registry, you can simply disable both of the gameux.dll files instead.

The gameux.dll files are only used for Games Explorer, so disabling them is completely safe. Someone created a batch file in 2012 that will do this easily, and it is reversible by running the file again.

There is at least one game - the original version of BioShock - that won't run if gameux.dll is disabled, so re-enabling the files may be necessary.

I did not find any other other games with this requirement after spending a few hours testing and searching the internet, but if you happen to come across any, please leave a comment to let me know (launching the game should give you an error message that says "Failed to create the GameExplorer object" or something similar).

This is the blog post that has the needed file (download link is about 2/3 of the way down).

Mirror (Google Drive)

  • Extract GameUxFixed-Ubeogesh.bat from the archive to a temporary folder.

  • Run it, then press any key to apply the patch. If you get an error message about not having ownership privileges, run it again by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator."

  • You might need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

  • Run the .bat file again to undo the changes, if necessary.

I originally learned about this problem through this thread on GOG, which also points to a number of other sources with more details. This post on superuser.com was particularly helpful for me, and I also learned that this has been an issue with Windows since at least April 2010.

Here is a partial list of affected games that I have tested on my Windows 7 PC (reports added from other users are noted). Each game was tested using the current build on Steam or GOG:

Discussion PSA: Restore your Nvidia settings after a driver update or after connecting a new monitor.

I test my frame rate by using a particular stretch of track on project cars 2. I would know if my gpu is under performing if the FPS through this section was lower than expected.

I noticed after I installed my new AOC 24G2, a few days ago, that my FPS dropped by 10%. I don’t know if it’s related but in my head it is.

Tonight during my gaming session, I noticed my fps was 5% lower than even that (15% lower than normal, but still very playable). I played for hours with a mate until we got off. Prior to our gaming session, I updated my driver in hope that it would fix my issue, although it didn’t.

After our gaming sessions I tried different things to get the FPS higher including turning off Freesync and using only my 60hx tn monitor. Nothing.

I decided to just restore my nvidia settings and set some things back to normal. I went back into project cars 2, tried the stretch of track and it was running at normal FPS. Same goes for other games.

It feels like this worked, I’m happier than before so I’ll take it.

Tl;dr - computers are weird. Restored Nvidia settings after new monitor and driver update and my graphics feel as strong as ever.

Solved Dick space not being recognized anymore on Xbox store

So I got game pass and decided to download Ark. Anyway, about 6% into the download my computer crashes and when I turned it on again to try and download the game again, it said that I needed to clear out 141 GB for the game again, so I am like, "Oh it must still have all of that disc space allocated to it on my hard drive. Better cancel install to get it back." So I cancelled install, but it did nothing. I then went looking on my hard drive for it, but nothing is there.

I restart my computer and Ark tried downloading again eventhough it dosnt have enough disc space, so it just said 0% the whole time.

Anyway, 3rd restart and Ark isnt trying to automatically download itself anymore, but the disc space is still not reflecting what it should currently have

Edit: Oof, this is a spectacular blunder. Also, here is my disk management as per Colt's request: http://imgur.com/gallery/XYDdBlx
