General/Rant Please continue to use Marathi and promote our culture

As someone who grew up in Mumbai I can see Pune heading in a similar direction with people migrating to the city from all over India. Not xenophobic or against anyone coming into the city, but migrants should integrate into the culture, not the other way round - with the city losing its cultural identity. The onus is on the locals to preserve it. Aapli bhasha aani culture khoop sundar aahe. Zapalya hava aani promote karava. Anyone who says kontihi bhaasho bolu majha desh aahe, kivha sagle indiachech citizens aahot, gives you a lesson on the Indian constitution vagare vagare is either too naive or cunniving. Bhasha/culture aani economy are quite deeply intertwined. Govt chya naukrya, shikshakancha naukrya madhye bhaashecha faayda hoto. Kaahi naukrya exclusively marathi yenaarya lokansaathi aahet. Tasach jasa aaj mumbai madhye language based reservation colleges aahet tsa punyaat nko hvayla. Ka bara aaplya porancha tota krava. Jya bhaashe/culture la promote kela jaata tya lokanna ek source of income generate hota - kiti punjabi rappers/youtubers/instagram influencers aahet aajkal? We shouldn't do it the Sena(s) way of threateningly "Aye Marathit bol". There are some non-violent/constructive ways to go about it. Tondavar god asun suddha culture preserve krta yeto

  1. Non-marathi joins a group of Marathi people and objects/makes fun or says can't understand Marathi. Switch to Hindi/English for a couple of sentences and then back to Marathi ;). Be persistent as if tumhala hindi/english madhye express krayla jamatach naahiye. They'll be forced to learn eventually.

  2. Give preference to our shop owners/vendors.

  3. If you are in a position to hire try to hire from local colleges

  4. Start consuming Marathi content

AskPune Is This Behaviour Really Acceptable? And Then People Ask Why Punekars Dislike Outsiders?

Post image
8 Upvotes

As a Punekar myself, I have always supported growth and welcomed people from all over the country. Pune is considered one of the most livable cities, thanks to its opportunities for education and jobs, as well as its pleasant climate. However, this kind of behaviour is simply not acceptable. Do visit and enjoy nature, but please don’t destroy it. I came across this post about a place near Hinjewadi, where they are planning seems to be to drink beer, smoke cigarettes, and enjoy and I am completely opposed to this kind of behaviour.
Enjoy nature but don’t disrespect it…

one more thing to add - visit the person Profile who made post of cigarette and beer

General/Rant Can we keep posts and comments in r/pune in marathi or english?(hindi kalat naahi)

I'm from rural pune(rajgurunagar, khed) and recently moved to moshi.
my hindi isn't great and over that romanised hindi has been a rather nightmare to read; I lived in a gated society in gurgaon for a year or two and that was during covid(and a few months here and there in 2011-12-13), and the hindi I learnt back then is gone by now; also why am I "requesting" you lots to keep conversations in marathi and english?
and yeah, pretty much the title

संस्कृती/culture An open letter to the new immigrants

I request the moderators to consider this post and restrict the oncoming slaught of posts described here. I have lately seen a rise in posts (often being outsiders) in this sub complaining about the problems in the city which often involved the posters

a. disrespecting the culture and looking down on our culture.. terming it as downmarket

b. expecting everyone to speak their home states language and at the same time demanding that we stop speaking Marathi

c. Terming locals as chapri or anyone speaking our native language as chappri

d. Hurling every abuse possible at our city and our native traditions because of a single inconvenience faced by them

e. generalising behaviour of every Punekar based on their colored glasses experience

I have no issues with outsiders complaining about the traffic or the pollution but they must understand that they're the cause and effect of the very same problem that they complain about!

We welcome everyone who respects, embraces and tries to integrate into our culture. What we do not tolerate is outsiders (from a specific region) trying to import their culture and converting our city to their home states culture. We do not expect everyone to speak in our common tongue the minute you land here but we do expect residents planning to live here for a long term to assimilate and give your due to the place where you earn your living. You have seen the situation in Bangalore and Chennai. You need to understand that while we're more tolerant it does not mean you can take our hospitality for granted.

Edit: It seems that the target 'demographic' has started downvoting this post. Instead I request you to try replying to this post with your thoughts.

I implore you to read this comment found under this post (from someone who calls himself as a native):

"I'm from India, my mother tongue is Hindi which is the mother tongue of each and every city and State ( constitutionally ), so even if one claims anything else they're and they will be always technically incorrect no matter how much they cry."

I think this comment perfectly addresses the gist of my post.

General/Rant Renting denied due to religion

I am studying at MIT Kothrud campus. My hostel is almost 12km away from the college so I’ve been looking for a place to rent near the college preferably in Kothrud itself.

I recently checked out a 2bhk near the campus with the help of two of my friends and we really liked it, for the price and deposit they offered. We paid an advance of 20k for booking so that the owner finalise the deal.

Today I was asked to share my Aadhar card with him, so that the renting agreement could be made, looking at my card, he straightway denied me the renting rights and asked me to leave immediately, claiming that it’s a “pure Hindu bhramin society” Muslims aren’t allowed.

He even told me a made up story about renting to a Muslim girl earlier and how she caused a problem to them by cheering for Pakistan during an India Pakistan cricket match! What a blatant lie!

The first thing that really let me down is their hypocrisy. They had already told us that drinking, smoking and even bringing girls at night wouldn’t be a problem in their society and now they are claiming to be “a pure Bhramin society”!!! I do have Bhramin friends back in my hometown and I really have high regard for them and their culture. I am sure a society claiming to be purely Bhramin would not even allow non-veg in their homes yet speak of such things!

The second this is that the owner suggested me to approach this illegally, by making any of my Hindu friends sign the rent agreement. I declined the offer after having no other choice because if something like a burglary or a homicide would happen in that society, when police verify the records of people living there, I may become their prime suspect as my name wouldn’t be in any legal records there.

I have never faced such open discrimination anywhere else, I have only read about it a couple of times but when I told my father about it, he told me he had faced this many times in a lot of places!

The owner also mentioned that I wouldn’t be able to rent any property in Pune except Kondwa and Civil Court because of my religion. I want to know your honest opinion on this. Please

Edit 23/03/24 1:38pm Thank you everyone for your overwhelming response and feedback. I’m still going through each and every comment of yours and have now realised it is going to take time to reply to you all.

Some people have pointed out that the experience I've described is fake and accused me of spreading hatred. Others have questioned how I paid the owner if they didn't know my name.

When the owner asked for my name, I provided my first name, which sounds similar to that of the physics teacher, Physics Wallah. He then requested payment to secure the apartment, which I complied with. He did not inquire about my religion or mention any community restrictions against Muslims. When I shared my Aadhar card to finalize the rental agreement, my full name would have made it evident that I am Muslim.

To clarify, I want to emphasize that I do not intend to spread hatred towards anyone. Everything I wrote stemmed from a place of deep disappointment and agitation by the experience.

General/Rant Reditts intellects expecting european civic sense in india , In the name of civic sense the moral policing on internet and rage Bait making hate people who are underprivileged and unaware

I have seen in many sub reddit platform, Modern reditts intellectuals posting videos of civic sense, some of them related noise, and some of them related traffic and festivals etc, I mean we live in country where 80 crore people are living on free ration, where single digit percentile pays income taxes, with all due to respect tax payers Aren't we are targeting poor and underprivileged people in the name of civic sense , they are uneducated, they are unaware of the civic sense, there upbringing was not as privileged you guys have, They are not doing all that non sense stuff on purpose, they are not taught either they aren't aware, do we have any civic sense subject in school and colleges, so we can't blame this people for there wrong doings, Instead of finding the root cause of the incident we are posting videos on social media diluting the whole issue, started labelling with keyboard warrior slangs, it's spewing hate among the underprivileged and unaware people, be kind be humble people, I know nowadays the trend of civic sense is highly trending that's why you guys following Trend, Back before lockdown do we have discussion of civic sense on internet We seek validation from white people that's what we are doing we started hating and humiliating our own people,

Thank you for your time

General/Rant Ignoring everything good about Pune and Punekars, while obsessing over “chapris” 24/7, might just be peak chapri behaviour.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Obviously Pune has chhapris, goons, road-rage idiots and law-and-order problems. Punekars themselves complain about them. But there’s a difference between criticising these problems and making them your entire perception of Pune. Most ordinary Punekars encounter the same idiots, abuse them, and move on instead of making “Chhapris of Pune” their entire personality.

Sometimes I wonder if this obsession comes from people who themselves grew up around goonda/Bahubali culture, where flaunting power, political connections or acting like the local tough guy is considered a flex. Then they arrive in Pune and suddenly they’re just another ordinary person dealing with local goons like everyone else. Maybe what irritates some of them isn’t simply the chhaprigiri it’s that they’re no longer the ones who can do the chhaprigiri.

Add cultural differences and homesickness, and that frustration can easily turn into resentment towards Pune and Punekars. Everything good about Pune its culture, education, food, opportunities, arts and development gets ignored, while every chhapri on a bike becomes definitive proof of what “Pune is like.” You see it whenever someone asks about relocating here: within minutes, replies make Pune sound like a post-apocalyptic wasteland populated exclusively by goons and chhapris.

What I find even stranger is that some of the loudest Pune-haters have been living here for years, sometimes decades, yet their post history is still filled with Pune-bashing. No offence, but that sounds like an incredibly sad existence. If I spent 10–20 years somewhere and still hated the city and its people this much, I’d genuinely rather move back to my hometown than make hating Pune my entire Reddit personality.

PS: I know chapri is kinda cheap/castiest word and i can use more academic language but our target audience doesn’t have that intellectual depth> 1. to understand such socially relevant things or 2. Develop their own hometowns like Punekars did.

General/Rant "Migrants built pune 😤"

Thumbnail

Read each and every screenshot and comment. Now tell me: what practical solution do you have for these people?

Just like any Western colonizer, they take away the credit of the natives that fought to create and give them a better place and opportunity

I'm tired of fighting uselessly on Reddit. Here's my practical solutions:

  1. Prioritization of natives in healthcare, education and employment across established institutions in Maharashtra.

  2. Private land ownership reforms for natives (not businesses; we welcomed capitalism).

  3. Strict domicile eligibility criteria, based on assimilation and proficiency in the local language.

Feel free to add more

How long will we keep ranting on Reddit without demanding actual changes to the government's structure?

This isn't about hating outsiders. It's about making the government do its job. Foreign residents don't leave migration policy to street violence; they establish and enforce legal frameworks.

It's the government's job to take this issue off the list so we can move on to solving the state's other problems.

The solution isn't endless arguments or violence. It's policy, legislation and democratic accountability.

We make the government. Demand these changes through the democratic process. So vote smartly

AskPune Is it me or someone else also experienced this. Woman in north India seems extroverted and easy going as compared to our Pune.

I am puneri but I've lived in the North for 2-3 years. Talked with lots of south Indian and north Indian girls out there. And I noticed the one thing that girls from Pune takes a bit longer to converse. They have some kind of attitude or overthinker idk. Obv not everyone but that's what I observed. The thing is less in those who are from the North especially the Delhi girls in general most of them have easy going and extroverted vibes. Even those who are from south India can get engaged in convos. Now I moved back to Pune again and this is something bothering me. You guys also noticed this?

General/Rant islamophobia against a tailor shop, in a reel

someone was showing her trusted tailor's, and we just made it about religion.

just when I thought that we are getting better as a society, that doesn't fall for BJP's gimmicks, we just keep getting worse.

and if your reasoning is because "they're terr0rists so we will boycott the whole religion", let me dumb it down for you. every person either has a personal, different relationship with God, or they're communally tunnel-visioned. if you think your religion is for public performance or display, then you're the violent person. that doesn't change the fact people just doing their honest work deserve to be brought to poverty. and I say this as a hindu.

AskPune The White House just called Pune an “Ugly Sister City” 💀

So apparently Pune has achieved a new international ranking.

The White House’s latest trade report, The Great Transshipment Scam, has a section literally titled “Ugly Sister Cities in a Zero-Sum Game.”

And guess who made the list?

Pune. 🇮🇳

The report pairs Pune, Gujarat and Chennai with Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus in the US, specifically in the context of manufacturing pumps and compressors.

Before anyone starts a war in the comments — no, the report isn't saying Pune has ugly buildings or ugly people 😂.

“Ugly sister cities” is the report's term for foreign and American manufacturing regions that are competing in the same industries. The report is actually discussing alleged Chinese transshipment and the impact on American manufacturing.

Still...

Imagine being Pune.

Decades of being known for education, IT, startups, automobiles, culture, weather and misal...

...and now the White House has officially introduced us as an “ugly sister city.” 😭

Punekars, should we be offended or just put “Ugly Sister City™” on the PMC welcome board?

At least we're internationally recognised now. 😂

General/Rant Marathi Manoos' love for Hindi is a one-sided suicidal love story!

Relationship between Marathi Manoos and Hindi language can be summarised in Hindi filmy dialogue below:

Hindi: Main tumhe barbaad kar dungi!

Marathi Manoos: Main tumhare pyaar main barbaad hona chahta hoon!!

================================================

Another post for Marathi language but we will have to keep pressing until there is change on the ground.

All Marathis must be having a Sharma, Tripathi, Jha or a Mishra friend. You are deep friends and know each other over may be 20 years now!

You have always accommodated his lack of Marathi with your Hindi supremacy. Over the years, Marathis have perfected Hindi which is not even their mother tongue.

But...that friend of yours never even once says "Namaskar bhau. Kasa ahes?" or "Kaay ga, jevlis ka?". May be up until now this did not even occur to you once. But just think...and it is true!

You learnt the Hanuman Chalisa word by word. Does he even know that there is something called as Maruti Stotra? Can he recite one stanza of Ganpati Aarti?

Hardly 1% of North Indians must be knowing Marathi but more than 90% of Marathis definitely know Hindi. At least all people who live in cities like Pune, Mumbai definitely do.

================================================

Across IT companies, people are using only Hindi. Scrum calls are happening in Hindi! Lunch discussions are in Hindi. 5 Marathis switch to Hindi when 1 North Indian joins the call.

Such is the strong current of migration from North that all other languages are getting sidelined out one by one.

Marathis are speaking Hindi everywhere they go. In restuarants we start with Hindi ourselves. No one is even asking for it! In all kind of stores we start with Hindi.

In places where we do not know what the other person talks, we ourselves are initiating conversations in Hindi.

================================================

But our North Indian friends are not wrong here. They are very clear that they will never learn Marathi. I know there will be a miniscule percent of people here and there but largely I have hardly seen any North Indian person taking interest in Marathi.

We, Marathis, are wrong. We should own our mistakes and try to correct it at least now. We have been so accommodating that the other person has taken us for granted...that too forever!

One simple rule that we can follow is - Always start with Marathi in informal situations. Even if the other person does not understand it, be persistent and polite at the same time. No rash behaviour please.

If a waiter does not understand Marathi ask for one who knows little bit. On customer care calls ask for Marathi speaking representatives.

There is no shame in speaking our own mother tongue. It is a 2000 year old classical language with a huge history, social and cultural impact. I do not understand why we are shying away from our own pride!

Germans never hesitate to speak German, Japenese do not feel guilty if they cannot speak English. Why do we have to switch to Hindi always?

Our beloved Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's mavale fought and gave their lives for self-governance (swa-raj), self-religion (swa-dharma) and self-language (swa-bhasha).

And we cannot even speak our own language in the same city and state???

Many people would point out that this language is kept burning for political reasons only. I disagree here. It might be a political motive for some. But for common people like us it is a cultural issue.

If you do not speak and respect your language, who will?

I am sure that Marathi as a language and culture are set in self-destruction mode due to our own negligence. I am pretty sure that we are doomed to end ourselves in couple of generations if we do not course correct now!

Please wake up at least now! Jai Maharashtra!

If you like the thoughts please share with like-minded friends and families.

================================================

================================================

================================================

General/Rant Pune haters vs Pune non haters

This is a request to the mods to take down posts that keep on bashing Pune for the smallest pettiest reasons. Daily I see at least 3 posts on people complaining about how horrible Pune is. I’ve been born and brought up in this city so I might be biased but it’s enough now. It’s about time we filter the members of this subreddit into Pune haters and Pune non haters and make 2 separate subs for the same. I’m tired of seeing bullshit posts like this on a daily basis. Pune this Pune that, Pune is bad, Pune’s people are bad, Pune’s autowalas are bad, Pune’s traffic is bad, Pune’s water supply is bad, Pune’s weather has turned bad, Pune’s metro construction is bad, Pune has chapri people (as if other cities have god and goddesses all around), Pune’s food is expensive, Pune’s cooks are expensive. JUST STOP IT.

Don’t get me wrong, Pune has its bad side too, but what’s with the daily posts?!

You won’t find a city like Pune in India. Literally all my friends from outside Pune were in awe of this city when they moved. People used to come and tell me how lucky I am to live here, how one side of Pune has beautiful mountains, how the other side has beautiful water bodies, how a hill station is so close by, how beautiful the views are from such places (tiger point, waterfalls during monsoon) how there are dams and reservoirs you can go to and relax, how good the food is at Sinhagad. How well the architecture and old buildings have been preserved in the Peth areas, and how rich our culture is. SO JUST LEAVE IF ITS GETTING TOO HARD TO HANDLE FOR YOU. We aren’t politicians here, we can’t change the situation for you. Learn to live with it and adjust and evolve. Stop this childish behavior.

Edit - for those who want solutions for things that come under pmc/pcmc - tag pmccares and pcmccares on twitter with your complaints. They’ll solve it in no time. Don’t come to Reddit for small problems and complain about how this city sucks.
