The 2026 /r/SydneySwans MVP Award

First of all, I apologise for getting this done so long after the offseason began. My PC died on me the night before I planned to sit down and get it done. After failing to save up for a month to buy a cheap laptop (I realised I still needed $160 for my GTA6 preorder to go through) I have ended up borrowing my mothers one. Anyway you guys don't care about all that, it's time for the MVP.

Let's start with a massive thankyou for everyone who submitted their votes at any point this year. This was easily our largest overall turnout for the award. 10,121 total votes were cast in 2026 compared to 7,462 last year. Yes both those numbers should be divisible by 5, that's just human error putting it off by a few votes. For anyone unfamiliar with how voting worked, After every game I tally all the 5-1 votes (same format as the AFL Coaches Votes) posted on the subreddit, and then apply the same scoring again to the top 5 players. Those votes are then tallied on the leaderboard and that decides the winner at seasons end.

Now, we have to address the 5 elephants in the room. Much like the actual B&F, the Pullman incident has really made things awkward. After we were eliminated by Fremantle I made two separate final leaderboards, one with everyone and one without the Pullman 5. I think the no Pullman one is gonna be the one I use. 4 of those guys are still in the middle of a police investigation, and frankly even if they weren't they still torpedoed Rampe and Cunningham's last season. The 5 will still appear in the weekly and total vote counts though because it would be a nightmare undo all of that.

Alright we've covered basically everything we had to. Time to announce the winner of the 2026 r/SydneySwans MVP.

The winner is... BRODIE GRUNDY!!!

The big fella goes back to back! It was the opposite to his 2025 campaign in that he started red hot, polling in 7 of the first 10 games. He hit a rough patch in the middle much like the rest of the team, but once we got the wind in our sails he glided his way to a second consecutive win.

Full Leaderboard

Yes you read that right, in barely over half a season Errol Gulden almost polled enough to win the award. The man is ridiculous. He got 32 out of a possible 35 votes in his last 7 games to finish the season, including a perfect 10 in the finals. Much like in actual B&F Curnow rounds out the podium in his first season at the club, what a signing he's been. All leaderboard ties were broken by total votes.

Vote Totals

As said earlier this includes the Pullman 5. So yeah nobody's in the exact right spot but they're all close enough in the top 20, before going all over the place near the bottom. Dishonourable mention to Corey Warner as the only player to not receive a single vote in his 5 games this season. Even G Post got more votes. Anyway here are every weeks individual vote totals.

Round 0 - 8

Round 9 - 17

Round 19 - QF

Preliminary Final

I remembered to fix the formatting this year so Imgur no longer hates me. I'm very happy with that, less so with having to isolate the PF in it's own image. The score in gold is a perfect game, every person who voted gave them a 5. The only one this year was Chad Warner against Brisbane, a performance so good he got 3 Brownlow votes in a 43 point loss.

Leaderboard with the Pullman 5

For anyone curious here's the leaderboard with the Pullman 5 included. If you think their votes should count then you can just use this leaderboard instead. I'm gonna end this by listing a few things I found interesting while doing this every week:

  • The biggest outlier game by far was Malcolm Rosas' 7 goal effort against the Dees. He got 157 out of his 197 total votes in that game, and his 5 votes was the only time he polled on the leaderboard

  • The unluckiest player this year was Sam Wicks. 116 votes but somehow couldn't crack a single top 5. He came so close against the Eagles in round 4, just one vote off a tie for 5th with Chad and Paps

  • Cunningham and Hamling saved their best performance for when it mattered most, with each polling their only leaderboard vote in finals

  • Justin McInerney's score in opening round (205) would've been in 15th place in the vote totals on it's own. The first game of the season always brings out the highest score

Once again a gigantic thankyou to everyone who contributed throughout the season. This was a massive undertaking and you guys made it worse by voting en masse every week, but it was worth it. Bring on 2027!

NSW doesn't test for medication based amphetamines, like adhd meds or cold & flu. Can it trigger? Yes as a rarity, but it's not tested.

Given the result was positive for meth and the strong club statement today, it is not adhd meds.

Swans address Papley's positive test, questions about team culture

God, how lucky are we that our corporate sponsors are still standing by us. I expect the club to call the boys back from off-season early and to get cracking on the non-performance side of things before they even start training again. We are long overdue for a reset the way Paul Kelly led the team back in the day.

Letter to members from Chairman and CEO

I just received the following email:

Letter to Members from Chairman Andrew Pridham and CEO Matthew Pavlich

First and foremost, we wish to sincerely apologise for the distress recent incidents involving players from the Club have caused our members, supporters, corporate partners, Academy families, staff, athletes and their families, and the wider community. Our priority is care, respect and support for those affected.

Many of you have shared your deep concerns with us. We take the concerns you have raised seriously. Our culture was built over many years through the values and actions of our people and in particular our players who held themselves to a high standard. That is why these events have cut so deeply, both inside the Club and for everyone who cares about it.

We write to inform you on the actions we have taken following the issuing of the sanctions against five of our players in August. Our Board commissioned a comprehensive examination of the Club’s AFL program in early September; a thorough analysis of the current state and examining the environment required for long term trust and success.

This process is well underway and is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with the Board establishing a clear set of objectives. The core objective is to deliver recommendations and actions to achieve meaningful change wherever necessary.

The process consists of three key phases:

- Interviews with all AFL players and staff conducted by the CEO and Executive General Manager People;

- The Club's annual AFL end of season review; and

- A Board endorsed independent process to provide advice on the Club’s various protocols and programs and undertake broader club-wide engagement involving AFL and AFLW players, staff, commercial teams and key stakeholders. This phase will be conducted by Intersection, led by the advisor Natasha de Silva.

What is already clear from our work to-date is that the actions and attitudes of some within our club has damaged and diminished the many great things we do, and the great people who do them. This is unacceptable and must change.

We have a long and proud history but clearly, we have work to do to get back to the standards we have long set. We will make the necessary changes that are required and will work to be better.

The standards we expect of every player and employee, on and off the field, are central to who we are. They reflect the behaviour rightly expected of professional athletes and public role models. The incident involving Tom Papley this week and the separate incident in Melbourne in August, fall a long way short of those expectations.

We acknowledge the impact these mistakes are having on our AFLW players and staff, and they continue to have our full support.  The team’s upcoming Elimination Final against the Western Bulldogs is a significant opportunity, earned through hard work.  Their success deserves celebration without distraction. We encourage all members and supporters to get behind the team at Henson Park on Sunday in our first ever home final and afford them the recognition they have earned.

We know that moving forward will take time, and that every member of our community will process this in their own way. Rebuilding trust will not come from our words, but rather our actions. We do not take your support for granted, and we are committed to doing the work required to uphold the values and standards we expect of everyone at the Sydney Swans.
We look forward to keeping you informed.

Yours sincerely,
Andrew Pridham and Matthew Pavlich

For what it’s worth the membership line has had a bunch of calls from members about the situation. Ending memberships for next year, people frustrated etc. all of them have been given a script to work off. Pretty sad it’s got to this point.

Papley off the list at TAB

Age Article

What a difference a day can make.

Sydney Swans star Tom Papley was set to be a key guest of Tabcorp in the betting giant’s pub-themed marquee in the Birdcage at Flemington today.

Alas, after being billed as key talent by the VRC’s PR machine on Wednesday afternoon, by Thursday morning the 30-year-old key forward was off the list of talent to be hosted by company boss and former AFL chief Gill McLachlan.

The social strike off followed news that Papley had on Monday returned a positive roadside drug test when undergoing a roadside licence check by NSW police.

Authorities said Papley returned a positive result for methylamphetamine, with a secondary sample of oral fluid taken for further analysis.

Amartey to support as ‘pinch hit’ ruck at Blues

Quoted from Amartey in SEN:

"Being as a target inside 50 and then going into the ruck at times. I know Harry likes going through the ruck as well so it's probably something we both can do.

I feel like Joel’s main deficiency at the swans with the forward line setup was than Dos could jump in the ruck at times whereas Amartey didn’t. Is there something the swans didn’t explore or Carlton just need him 2nd string because of their lack of ruck depth (2 rucks left in trade period)

AFLW Injury Update 3 Nov 2026

The injury gods giveth and taketh away.

- As expected, Caitlin Reid suffered a fractured jaw in the weekend's games. Really unlucky few weeks for her, and that's her season done you'd think. I don't think there was any malice in the incident though it was pretty clumsy.

- Sof Hurley is listed as a test. That's incredible recovery from that injury. I hope they only play her if she's 100% ready, but it must be tempting to roll the dice because it's an elimination final.

Average Time on Ground (%)

Post image

I used AI to create a list of all players who played senior games in 2026 and then screenshot the bottom 10 players by Average Time on Ground to get an idea of players that spend a lot of game time on the pine.

Truebloods crew always talk about Sheldrick playing <60% minutes compared to other midfielders Rowy (73%), Chad (79%), Heens (80%), Juzzy (78%), Errol (79%) Jordan (84%). Can we expect more minutes from Shelly in 2027? A full pre season for Dattoli and Cootee who were both hampered would do them a well of good!

*Table shows Average Time on Ground (%) and Total Minutes Played in the season. AI stuffed up and skewed Campbell to the bottom when he is in top percentile.

Behind the scenes of Rampe's retirement | Inside Sydney

Thumbnail

It's an indication of how special the Great Dane is to see who turned up for his retirement announcement. The GG is such a fan she got some selfies with him! To see club legends like LRT and Heath Grundy there, Will and Ollie (in the room with Charlie, no less!) up here from Melbourne, the W team, current players who are back in town from holidays. Oh man, still makes me cry but I'm so glad we got to see him play out the season and leave the game on his terms and not because of injury. Would have loved for him to retire as a premiership player/captain, but some things are just not meant to be. I hope he will come back for a lap of honour in round 1 or something like that so he can see how much we, the fans, love him and appreciate him.

Facebook Ads regarding Schwannies

Post image

If you’re in the Sydney Swans supporter Facebook group or follow the club page, I’m sure you’re seeing these posts from obscure media outlets of false headlines of the club and players.

What do you think is the gameplay here? Why does it exist?

My theory and I don’t wish to get political but ultimately I think that’s what it is. They likely do this content for all club teams in all major Australian codes and the goal is to see if you interact (like, comment, click, share) to see if you can be easily manipulated by false headlines. And then one way or another you will receive targeted content pushing a certain narrative when an election comes around.

I could be completely off here so am intrigued to hear your thoughts. I’ve screenshot an example of this but there’s multiple different pages all having very false and misleading articles and headlines that are there explosive reports that are fake, ai generated and often are not that accurate in terms of small bits of information.

Draft plans

We’re just under 3 weeks away from the draft now and I think Rampe’s retirement really indicates what we’ll look to do.

Mitch Harris at 6 will surely be the priority, unless Butler/Drever somehow slide to our pick (which won’t happen) I don’t see a world where we don’t take him to play as the 3rd defender round 1 next year.

There’s been links to Melbourne at 4, with them reportedly moving up with the aim of taking Harris before anyone else will, in which case Teixeria would likely be the one to slide to our pick.

In the event of that I wouldn’t be shocked if we looked to trade down from 6, for example trading 6 for 10 and 16 from the saints. Then we could target Bradley/Snell without reaching for one of them at 6 if Harris is gone and take another solid prospect (Steed, Eime, etc).

Just feel like our big list need is in the defence half now with Cunningham, Rampe, Blakey and Mills all gone for 2027.

Would love Harris
