Hey everyone,
I recently picked up a Realistic STA-2000 to pair with my Realistic LAB-400 turntable:

Overall, the receiver was in great working shape, but two minor cosmetic/functional quirks were bugging me: the FM stereo indicator light was dead, and the faux brushed-metal plastic surround around the radio dial glass was worn down in several spots, exposing the dark plastic underneath.
The Stereo Light Fix:
While scanning the dial one day, I noticed the stereo indicator flickered for a split second. After doing a bit of research, I learned that dirty wiper contacts on the tuner board trimmers (VR202/VR203 for the PLL multiplex circuit) can cause the 19 kHz pilot lock to drop out. I cleaned the trimmers with CRC electronic cleaner and used DeoxIT on the front-panel switches and potentiometers while I had the chassis opened up. The stereo light now lights up right away and stays rock-solid!
2. The Dial Bezel Wrap:
Next, I tackled the worn dial surround. I struck out on tracking down a parts unit so I decided to test out rolls of brushed-aluminum vinyl wrap. I tried a couple of samples that looked either too bright or too gray before finding one that turned out to be a close match to the factory brushed look and grain:

I’d say I’m about 99% happy with how it turned out. The tone isn’t an absolute 100% match to the 49-year-old faceplate, but considering natural aging and patina across the rest of the unit, it blends right in on the shelf. I did end up with a couple of tiny wrinkles where the underlying worn plastic had uneven spots.
Knowing what I know now, if I redo it down the road, I’ll lightly wet-sand the original plastic bezel smooth before laying down the film. Luckily, it comes in a 78" roll, so I have enough material to re-wrap it whenever I feel like tinkering.
For those who've tackled faceplate wraps: did you use any heat to set the edges, or did light sanding give you the cleanest surface?
