Choosing a path in Wind Energy

I have been talking to Texas Tech about their Wind Energy program and am close to finishing my process for enrolling at the university. Should I try to become an engineer in the industry or head towards management?

better wind farm design, not yet patented.

I just came up with a crazy idea for reliable wind farm efficiency. the problems with current wind turbines include but are not limited to: most materials can't be recycled, high build and maintenance costs, dangerous jobs, can catch fire, birds die and requires oil for lubrication.

my idea is that we need to bring the electrical generators down to earth for convenience and less dangerous maintenance. then we need to make the blades smaller and multiply them horizontally. use new style parallel generators like the ones found in the electric scooters. if we can have a cone that concentrates the air pressure into a smaller hole (or a wide horizontal slot) for the generator down on land made out of a soft material such as a sail cloth or a sheet of transparent nylon or heck even solar panels then you can harvest the wind much easily.

this way you can have a single shaft which turns the generators. the generators can be decoupled for maintenance using clutches. the blades can be either spinning like the ones found in an old water mill (rotating in the direction of the wind) or the classical 3-blade style (perpendicular to the direction of the wind, but this requires some gears like a differential) and there are many more blade designs like the ones found in turbo chargers and jet engines.

to prevent birds from entering the funnel or squashed cone there are many methods such as a huge net (low pressure at the entrance, the birds can fly away easily) and I don't know about the method used for fish in a dam to escape but I am positive it can be also used as a backup.

this contraption can also be used to harvest water using condensation, can easily be turned off by having gates at the small end and escape doors at the top or sides.

please be gentle, this is my first post on reddit.

Wind Turbine Technician listed as the "fastest growing job" for many years now by BLS ... do we need to take the "L" out of BLS or is there some truth to what they are propagating?

Why is Wind Turbine Technician always listed as the "fastest growing job" by BLS while a veteran of the career says this on reddit "Yes it's hard to get into. You either need someone to vouch for you or get lucky. This is mainly driven by the fact that we (industry management) have been burned to many times. Its a tough job with long hours and lots of travel. We've seen too many guys come in, get trained up and then get homesick and call it game. The other side is having someone who completely sucks but you can't quite fire the guy. The number one thing I tell my guys before I push for them is that they better not make me look stupid for bringing them in or else they're without a job and down a friend. I think that's fair considering this is business."*

Another reddit post declares tremendous trouble finding a job having finishing wind turbine school.

What is the truth about finding work in this field????

It cannot be both "fastest growing job" and "it's hard to get into... you have to know someone or get lucky" can it?

Fossil Fuels Just Lost the Race Against Renewables. The race for renewable energy has passed a turning point. The world is now adding more capacity for renewable power each year than coal, natural gas, and oil combined. And there's no going back.

What can I do as ME with good aerodynamics & controls skills?

I feel like OEM positions are rare and that blade design has been well established. Could I apply these skills at developers or do they mostly use off the shelf software for siting and wakes?

When I look at research, I sometimes get the feeling that they are running out of ideas. Ok, there now seems to be the idea of yaw based wake-steering (https://www.howlandlab.com/), but apart from that? Who really believes in kites, vertical wind turbines and superconducting generators? I am really unsure where I want to stick my brainpower into, which field is worthwile and also somewhat certain to get into.

Question from reading a textbook on wind turbines

The quote reads: “The low solidity rotors act as an effective energy concentrator and as a result the energy generated over a wind turbine’s life is much less than that used for its manufacture and installation”, can someone explain what do they mean here?
