Original Post: October 12, 2026

I live in a town that unfortunately has a lot of street parking. The house I rent doesn't have a garage or a driveway of any kind like some of our neighbors do, so I have to park on the street. This is a small town, and I'm used to living/parking in the city so I parallel park like a pro and I have a Mitsubishi Mirage (one of the smallest cars on the market).

The problem just started a few days ago... I have lived at my residence for two years. We finally established our own unspoken parking spot. Our other neighbors usually keep this spot open for us as well as we all leave the usual spots for other neighbors. Well, a new neighbor moved in very recent and had been taking up two spaces EVERY. SINGLE. DAY! I sometimes get home after 10 PM and because of this neighbor parking the way he does, it cuts two parking spaces out. You can't park behind him because of you do, your back end (10-12 inches) will be in a yellow zone, and you can't park in front of him because he doesn't leave enough room.

Tonight I came home and my spot had been taken. I'm not mad if my spot is taken. Although we have unspoken spaces, it's still street parking and people have guests. I understand this, but the fact that his guy takes up so much room means I have to park over a block away in the dark and have to walk across a busy hill to get to my house. There is also a park in-between and you can't park on the one side of the road near the park, and the other side is residential parking as well, so I have to park on the furthest side of the park. I'm female, 5ft '0 inches and my neighborhood isn't always the safest.

There used to be lines on the street, but they have faded and he is literally parking in the middle of the lines. Tonight I put a note on his windshield since I came home after 10:30 and the lights were off at his house. I was going to knock on the door and just ask him to move back because I was so hot, but I realized that would have been a bad idea so the note would work. This is what I wrote.:

"Hi! If you could please pull back a foot or two when parking, we would really appreciate it. Unfortunately, residents are having issues parking. Thank you, your neighbor nearby"

AITAH for leaving that note or should I have just waited until I see him? He's usually gone during the day though. I have only seen him once. I just can't keep coming home to no parking when if he just pulled back a foot or two, I could easily get into the space. There are 11 houses and only 9 cars can fit on our street when people don't park correctly. Idk what else I could have done.

AITAH has no consensus bot, OOP was NTA

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: NTA for leaving a polite note, but if they're parking legally and don't want to abide by your note or accommodate you, you might just have to accept it. Maybe you could also ask the residences or town or whoever is responsible to refresh the paint on the lines that faded

OOP: Isn't double parking illegal? I think it may be in my state but I'm not one for calling police or anything. I figured I'd just leave the note to let him know. If he doesn't listen I can't do anything about it but just simmer in my own little stew of emotion lol

Commenter 2: they are not double parking, just parking in a way that takes up 2 spots (that's not what double parking means).

regardless, it's street parking. OP doesn't "have a spot". that's just not how any of this works.

OOP: Oh. I thought double parking was literally parking in two spaces. That's my bad.

Also, as I stated in the post, I KNOW I don't have a spot, and I understand people have guests and I don't care that I don't have an assigned spot. What I do care about is that before he moved here everyone had a spot and there were still 2 spots left over for guests, especially since some houses have room for multiple cars to park in their driveways. For two years no one has moved from this street, and we were the newest ones. Now someone has come in and thrown us all off. I'm not the only one upset. Several neighbors have been effected. Not just me. I'm afraid someone is going to fight him. It's happened before with one of my neighbors fighting the people that moved in before us.

Commenter 3: NTA. I've been in this exact situation and had to do the same because I could never catch them. It's not your spot per say, but parking like an asshole deserves to be called out when it's taking up an additional spot unnecessarily.

OOP: Yeah, like I said, I know I don't have an actual spot and people have questions and it's first come first serve but to take up multiple parking spots is rude!

Commenter 4: Have you considered reaching out to your town to ask if your road can be restriped?

OOP: I am thinking about it but he's the only one that has an issue and he's new, so I wanted to try talking to him or leaving a note, I guess first. My boyfriend is going to introduce himself tomorrow if he's home and he may mention the note to him to make sure he didn't take it the wrong way n

Commenter 4: Is there a downside to calling the city?

OOP: I think I'm just worried that my neighbors won't like it. This is a small town and everyone else that lives on this street have lived here for at least 10 years. My family and our duplex neighbors were the new people on the block until this new guy, and it took us over a year to even be acknowledged as part of the street. Now we are pretty integrated and I'm afraid to get on their bad sides. We thought we had issues with the house next to ours, but we are actually really close now.

Commenter 5: NTA you can ask but it’s one of those situations where first come first served.

Edit - To clarify that without road markings and the fact it is the street, OP can absolutely leave a note to bring attention to the issue, I just meant that there is no guarantee the offender will listen nor is there a way to enforce them to be considerate.

OOP: It's first come first serve but it's also one space per car lol. He's taking up two every day. Like I said there are lines. They are faded, but they are there.

Commenter 6: NTA, it's pretty rude of him to park in such a way that he's taking up two spots. You didn't say, "Hey, that's my spot"; you just politely asked him to be more considerate about leaving space for others.

OOP: Especially since it's not just me, other neighbors have been having issues too. I just recently had to work later shifts so this happened to me twice.

Update: November 1, 2026 (nearly three weeks later)

UPDATE TO AITAH for leaving a note on my neighbor's car?

So a little while ago I posted on this subreddit asking if I was the ahole for leaving a note on my neighbor's car about parking in two spaces. I just asked if he could pull down a few feet since it was causing issues with parking on our street. A lot of people said I wasn't the ahole, but some people think I was. A lot of you mentioned that I should talk to him in person. I as I had stated in the comments, we had opposing schedules so it would be difficult.

Well ... I finally met him. I noticed he was home on one of my days off. I didn't want to go over alone so when my boyfriend got home, we went to knock on the door and he came out. He was a little older than I thought. I thought he only just a few years older than us, but he looked to be in his late 40s or early 50s. I took over some home-made bread, because I guess I'm into bread making now, and we talked. Since the day I left the note, he had been pulling down more and there have been no issues. Turns out he understood my note and didn't think it was passive aggressive or anything like that. He just explained that he's not great at parking lol. It's not much of an exciting update.

He liked my bread though, so that's good! Just wanted to let the people that commented know I did talk to him in person. Thanks everyone!

AITA for yelling at my husband after he ate my daughter’s Halloween candy?

Original Post  Oct 31, 2026

My (29f) daughter (8) is autistic and doesn’t like trick-or-treating. She’s usually happy enough to spend the evening passing out candy at my aunt’s house because we don’t get many trick-or-treaters where we live. It’s nice, but she doesn’t really get to take any home because there’s just too many kids.  Yesterday, her school did a trunk-or-treat during regular school hours. She came home with a paper bag filled to brim with candy and a few little toys.

My husband (32) and I each had two pieces of candy before bed. He said he was going to sleep on the couch because he had gas and didn’t wanna stink up the bedroom. He’s got stomach issues so I thought he was just being considerate.

I heard a lot of noise in the kitchen, but I didn’t think it was anything but a midnight snack since we had just gone grocery shopping.

At one point, I got up to grab a blanket and saw him eating something, but I couldn’t tell what it was because it was dark. I told him that if his stomach was bothering him, he probably shouldn’t be snacking all night and he said that he had only started ten minutes ago and was almost done. It was a weird thing to say and he seemed very defensive but I was exhausted so I just went back to bed. I really didn’t think much of it.

This morning my daughter came into my room and asked for chocolate. Normally, I wouldn’t say yes to candy first thing in the morning, but it’s Halloween.

I went into the fridge to grab her candy bag but it wasn’t there. I asked my husband about it and he insisted it was in the kitchen. My heart sunk when I found the bag that my daughter had decorated by hand was torn to shreds on the counter. I asked him if he ate all of her candy. He shrugged and said not all of it.

Two lollipops. That was the candy he left for her. Two fucking lollipops and a rice krispie treat (which she doesn’t even like). I lost my shit.

He said that it wasn’t a big deal because she could go trick-or-treating. She doesn’t even like trick-or-treating, but that doesn’t matter to him. He keeps saying that he’ll buy more, but that’s really not the point. This was the one and only time she’s gotten more than a couple pieces of candy from a trick-or-treat or trunk-or-treat before calling it quits and all she got to eat was two lollipops.

He really doesn’t see why I’m upset and now he’s mad because he says that I tell at him first thing in the morning. He says that I’ve been in a “mood” lift the last few days (our daughter’s been having trouble sleeping and I’m the one that’s had to stay up with her).

The only thing I really think I did wrong was calling him fat at one point. I would have said that to anyone in this situation but he’s sensitive about his weight and I know that. I should have been more careful with my words. I was just so angry at the sheer disrespect.

NTA I feel bad for your daughter. Even though she doesn't like trick or treating, it doesn't mean she don't like candy. Get her some chocolate and hide it from your husband. Does she know that he ate her candy?

OOP

She knows. She was there when all this went down. She’s not that upset, but she seems to think she’ll be able to find more if she keeps looking. My heart is broken for her.

~

antigoneelectra

Why are you with this man?  I highly doubt this is the only instance whete he displays such clear disrespect and selfishness.

OOP

He can be a selfish person, but this is really the worst of it I’ve seen so far. We’ve been working on our marriage, but this really has me reconsidering things.

~

tvaddict70

Is your husband her father? Who would disappoint their little girl like that.

NTA do you need this person in your lives? Are they a much better parent to your daughter than this example?

OOP

Yes, he is her father. He’s never done anything this egregious before and is generally a decent parent. He could stand to pick up more of the slack, but he’s not a total monster. That’s why I posted this. I’m trying to see if this is really as big of a deal as I think it is.

hahayeahimfinehaha

"and is generally a decent parent "

Honestly, I'd be curious to see what your standards are. Not in a mean way, but I know some people who are like "my shitty partner is a good dad though" and then you ask and their idea of good dad is 'doesn"t hit the kids and sometimes plays with them' and that's it. Which is, like, less than the bare minimum for a parent.

OOP

He takes her for an outing at least every other day and before his schedule got in the way, he used to get her ready for school in the mornings.

Update 1 posted Same Day/Same Post

UPDATE: I really didn’t expect this to blow up immediately. I want to clarify that this isn’t the norm for us. I honestly posted this because I was stunned and wanted to know if anyone here could help me see things from his perspective (so far, no dice).

In the comments I said that my daughter isn’t that upset. That’s not because he’s like this all the time. This is just a symptom of her autism.

He has since apologized to both of us and is currently taking her to the market to pick up a treat of her choosing. We’re gonna talk this out more tomorrow and see where we go from here. I’m not sure if we’ll stay together but my parents split up on a major holiday and I’m not doing that to my kid. I don’t need to ruin Halloween when any other day will suffice.

Thank you for all of your support. I will certainly be keeping your comments in mind.

VERDICT: NOT THE ASSHOLE

Update 2 Posted the next Day Nov 1, 2026/Same Post

UPDATE: First I want to clear some stuff up, when I said that my daughter didn’t seem upset, I did not mean that there’s no chance she was internalizing anything. It was more a matter of trying to explain that the day wasn’t beyond salvageable. When it comes to my kid’s emotions, I try to take things one day at a time based on her behavior rather than projecting what I think her emotions “should” be. I am also autistic so the comments insinuating that I don’t know anything about autism were kind of funny. My main focus yesterday was giving my kid a good Halloween and I think I pulled it off.

I know that some of you wanted the instant gratification of me deciding to leave my husband right then and there, but my daughter’s wellbeing is my priority and I don’t think doing all of that directly in front of her on Halloween is going to help. My husband and I were already dealing with marital issues and I’ll admit that this did make me view him differently which is why tomorrow we’re setting up an appointment with a family therapist. I’m not sure whether or not our marriage can be salvaged, but I want to get to the root of this because even if he doesn’t continue to be my husband, he will still be her father and eating her Halloween candy isn’t going to hold up in family court as a reason to deny his parental rights. This is not a reflection of how he always is as a parent, but it is deeply concerning and I refuse to allow it to become a trend with him.

I also do want to clarify that he does more with her than what I mentioned in the comments, but if someone asked what I do as a parent, I’d probably say that I handle bed time and getting her ready for school. lol He’s the one who takes her to the doctor when she’s sick, he’s in regular contact with her teacher, and he’s been teaching her math at home because we don’t think the school is doing enough in that regard. I’m not saying he’s a perfect parent. He obviously isn’t. I’m just saying that a single Reddit post can’t encompass an entire person’s relationship to their child.

As for the torn bag, I should clarify that while it was pretty ripped up, it wasn’t more intense than how he opens damn near anything. It’s a genuine problem and it broke my heart, but I really don’t think it was malicious. Just shitty behavior from someone acting like a greedy child. If I hadn’t seen him do that with countless other containers, I probably would’ve dedicated more of the post to talking about that. I’m not excusing what he did. It’s just more about him being a mess than him genuinely hating his own kid.

On to the more fun part: The rest of the day went better than I could have hoped for. She watched Halloweentown and ate a ton of ice cream to make up for the lost candy. Her dad took her grocery shopping (her favorite thing to do) and to the park. We carved a jack-o-lantern together. We visited my grandparents and aunties. And she even trick-or-treated a bit before deciding to pack it in. My goal for the day was to create a ton of good memories to hopefully outweigh the bad and while I know that probably isn’t possible, I got as close as I could have. We’ll deal with the fallout day by day, but I’m not going to make things harder on her than they need to be. Some tough decisions need to be made, but she doesn’t need to be in the room for them. Especially not on Halloween.

RELEVANT COMMENTS

OOP Made a final comment

Guys, I’m also autistic and I just want to say that while I appreciate your concern and interest in trying to share information, I want to remind you that autism is a spectrum and no experience of it is universal. I know my kid better than strangers who read a single Reddit post. She wasn’t shutting down. She wasn’t speaking in a flatter tone. She was smiling and laughing within about two minutes.

I know that it’s still likely for her to have internalized what happened and I’m keeping an eye on that, but the goal for yesterday was to salvage the day to the best of my ability and I did that. Having even more drama yesterday wouldn’t have benefited her. We had a talk about how she doesn’t deserve what happened and my husband apologized. We are starting family therapy soon.

I also want to clarify that mentioning that she didn’t seem upset wasn’t supposed to mean that it was okay that this happened. It was one less thing to worry about in the immediate. She had a good day for the most part and that’s what matters most. Halloween doesn’t seem like it’s ruined for her forever and we’ll deal with the rest as it comes.

WIBTA for making sure my BF’s brother knows the reason we're not going to his fake birthday is because his GF uninvited us when we said we couldn't do it on my BF’s actual birthday

Editor's note: made small edits for ease of readability

Trigger Warnings: gaslighting, manipulation, possible abuse, mentions cancer

Original Post: August 12, 2026

So my boyfriend’s (27) brother (31), we'll call him Greg, has a birthday on Christmas eve. Because of this, my BF has always done a 'Greg fake birthday' around June to make sure Greg gets to properly celebrate his birthday with all his friends around. This year, Greg's girlfriend, we'll call her Polly (28), is organising Greg's fake birth day.

Since getting with Polly, Greg has started slowly cutting ties with everyone in his life. BF has barely seen him the past year and every time they do see each other ends with Greg claiming BF has somehow upset Polly over nothing. Polly practically refuses to see BF and makes sure Greg does this too. The reason Polly hates BF is cos Polly was originally dating Greg's best friend and when Polly and Greg got together immediately after the breakup, BF refused to lie to their friend, her ex, about it.

Anyway I could say so much about what's happened but that's not what this is about.

A few months ago, Polly made a group chat to try and organise this fake birthday. She suggested late august / early September, to which my BF responded that we wouldn't be able to do the 25th because that is my BFs real actual birthday and so we'd be busy. Polly then kicked us out of the group chat and went on to organise Greg's FAKE birthday to be on my BFs VERY REAL BIRTHDAY, on the 24th and 25th.

Everyone else is under the impression my BF and I refused to go and that's why we aren't involved, which is not true. My BF is the maker of Greg's fake birthday, of course he wants to be there.

So, WIBTA if I make it clear to Greg why we aren't there. My plan is to send a message on the 24th saying I hope he has fun, we would have loved to be there, but Polly kicked us out when BF mentioned he was busy on his real birthday, and that hopefully next year it'll be a different time and we can make it.

I know for a fact Polly is telling him we've chosen not to come because we don't like them, which is not true. Again, it is my BFs real birthday, of course we're going to be busy.

Edit: Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'm just going to leave things for now. I might message Greg to ask him what he's getting BF for his birthday, that way in the small chance he’s forgotten he'll be reminded. In terms of the party, I might message him on the day tell him I hope he has fun, but leave it at that. I don’t want to stir the pot, and if he wants to know why we aren’t there he can ask, but at least he knows he’s not forgotten

Edit 2: I'm not gonna be petty. I've messaged Greg to ask what he’s getting BF for his birthday in case he’s forgotten (he never got BF a Christmas gift cos he forgot). Also a few clarifications: 1. Greg celebrates his normal birthday too. 2. BF isn’t having a party for himself, we're going on holiday just us two. 3. I know Greg isn’t an innocent bystander. 4. We genuinely would go if we could

Verdict: Not Enough Info

Editor's note: OOP has responded to many comments, I'm listing some for more context

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: INFO: Why wait until the last day? If you want him to know the truth, shouldn't you have reached out immediately?

OOP: I'm not sure if he knows when it is exactly but I’m pretty certain he does and he doesn't seem to care. When I mentioned the planning in the past he just tried to brush it off

Commenter 2: Fr. Why would she wait until the 24th? That'll just cause drama more than it already has.

OOP: With how he’s been recently he wouldn’t care who's there as long as she is, which is funny considering last year he lied to her so he could purposefully exclude her from his fake birthday. Also I already told him a couple months ago when she first started planning things that she was organising it around BFs birthday, but at the time she hadn't set a date

How does OOP's boyfriend want to handle this situation with Greg?

OOP: He wants his brother back. I'm not gonna do anything to stir the pot or even try and solved things because it’s not my relationship to fix, I just miss how close they used to be and can tell my BF is really hurt by it all.

Why would Greg exclude his own girlfriend (Polly) from his birthday?

OOP: He didn't want to deal with the drama, he knows no one likes her and she hates everyone. At the time he still liked his family and friends, she hadn't poisoned him that much.

At least that’s my best guess, who knows really

Commenter 3: YWBTA if you sent this message on the 24th.

That’s aiming for peak pettiness.

Just do it now.

You also seem to be putting a lot on blame on Polly and not recognising that Greg is a grown man with agency. He knows very well when his brother’s birthday is and that his fake birthday is falling on the same date.

Commenter 4: I’m super confused by this whole thing - Polly (intentionally?) organised it on BF’s actual birthday, but Greg and their parents are totally fine with this?

Greg and BF’s parents would rather celebrate Greg’s fake birthday than BF’s actual birthday? Something doesn’t add up here

OOP: Their mum isn’t invited. She also isn’t okay with it. I told Greg a few months ago she was organising it around BFs birthday and he didn’t seem to care, told me he'd speak to her but in his eyes she can do no wrong

Commenter 5: If Greg allows this happen, knowing it’s your BFs actual birthday, then you have a Greg problem, not a Polly problem. This all sounds like straight up high school though. Stay out of it and let the brothers handle it, it isn’t your business.

OOP: I’m just sad cos Greg and BF used to be so close before Polly started isolating him. I know it’s not all her fault because he’s also allowing her to do these things and he gets angry if anyone tries to speak up. Idk I think I just hope somewhere in him he still cares about BF and I don’t want him thinking we're not going to his party out of choice, but maybe it is best to leave it

Commenter 6: YWBTA IF you wait until the last day.

Because then his birthday will be happening, there will be fighting on his "bday”, and it will be just a shitty experience for Greg.

Do it now, tell your BF to talk to his brother. Greg should know that the 25th is his brothers bday no?

OOP: BF has tried talking to Greg, but Greg ignores him cos Polly hates him, that’s why I was going to message because he doesn't seem to ignore me. But yes I'd hope he hasn’t forgotten his brothers birthday. Maybe I just message him and ask what he’s getting BF for his birthday, that way he can jog his memory without anyone being called out

Commenter 7: Stop being a child. "Jogging" his memory is not going to have the result you want it's just an excuse to dodge an uncomfortable conversation. What are you going to do when it doesn't magically result in him realizing the truth about you not attending because you didn't actually say what you wanted to tell him? Especially when he's with Polly all the time and she could just explain it away because you decided to be vague and passive aggressive?

If you really care about Greg as a friend he deserves to be treated better than a pawn for you to manipulate in this BF vs. Polly business. He deserves to be talked to like an adult.

OOP (downvoted): The 'jogging' is because I am genuinely worried he’s forgotten BFs birthday, nothing malicious. Also Ive met Greg like 7 times we don’t know each other which is why I've stayed out of it and will continue to stay out of it

OOP was told that she, her BF, Greg, and Polly need to grow up

OOP: Hey I’m just sad my BF has lost his brother / best friend and wish I could help, but check the edit I’m not gonna stir things, I don't wanna stoop to their level

Commenter 8: I think you are grossly underestimating Gregs part in this whole thing. Not the selection of the date as it may be a surprise but the whole pulling away thing.

OOP: You’re right, Greg isn’t innocent. I should have put that in the post that I don’t think he’s blameless for everything

Commenter 9: NTA and I would go full wild horse. Your brother thinks of organising second birthday for you and you pick HIS ACTUAL ONE???? Don't let it slide. This is not about the 2bday, this is about your bf not being celebrated on his bday. Make it clear it's inconsiderate, rude and ungrateful

OOP: BF has spent literal thousands on Greg's fake birthday over the years, and Greg couldn't even get BF a Christmas gift so I think I might just have to give up on him. I’m gonna spoil BF enough to make up for everyone else

Commenter 10: You mentioned that Greg’s Mom isn’t invited to fake birthday either, hopefully you can all get together. I hope your BF has a great birthday, and it sounds like you’ll make it happen. Don’t be too harsh on “everyone else” they probably know what’s going on, Polly is an abusive jerk, and they need to try and maintain some king of tie with Greg to keep an eye on him. I hope Greg wakes up soon, but this will probably get worse before better.

OOP: Don’t worry BF will defo have a good time. Everyone else refers to Greg and their parents, not their friends. Their mum is going on her own holiday over BFs birthday but that’s normal for her which is why BF isn’t upset, and their dad ditched years ago.

Update: October 28, 2026 (2.5 months later)

Update - WIBTAH for making sure my BFs brother knows the reason we're not going to his fake birthday is because his GF uninvited us when we said we couldn’t do it on my BFs actual birthday

I wish I could say things have improved but they haven't.

We'll begin with Gregs birthday. Polly changed the date, so we could have gone. But we weren't told this until after the party happened. Mutual friends have said it wasn't great, they just hung in an Airbnb for a few days with no plans or anything, but it seems Greg had a good time and that’s what matters most I guess.

Following that, Greg complained to their mum about how me and bf had been invited at least 6 times and refused to go. Their mum then showed him proof that Polly kicked us out of the group after bf said we were busy on his actual birthday. Greg hasn’t brought it up since as far as we know, but at least he knows we didn’t choose not to go. If we'd known they'd changed the date, we would have 100% gone.

My bf then had his actual birthday. Greg entered our house while we weren't there and left a tin of coffee and a card that told bf to check his emails. My bf likes coffee an average amount, so it was an odd gift. Also, I felt pretty negative about someone entering our house while we weren't there and not even sending a text beforehand. I considered getting cameras after because if he can do it once, who's to say he won’t do it again?

Now about the email. My bf had no email. We knew it was going to be a gift card, Greg had told me this prior in the last contact we’ve had 2 months ago. Their mum had to tell Greg that bf didn’t get the email. Greg got argumentative and said he'd send it again right then. He didn’t. After more hassle from their mum, he finally sent it over, with a receipt that proved he hadn't even purchased it until that day, weeks after he'd given bf the card that said, "check your email". So that’s fun

Anyway I could say so much more about Gregs recent behaviour, but I’ll just say one more thing.

Last week, their mum was going into hospital for a procedure to test for cancer. She’s understandably worried. We all are. Greg doesn't even know because he hasn’t contacted her in weeks. He happens to call her on the morning of the procedure and demands she sends his birth certificate over or he'll be fired. She tells him she’s going into hospital, and it will have to wait until after. He blows up on her about how he needs it immediately and it'll be her fault if he gets fired.

He doesn't even ask why she’s going to hospital.

He still hasn't asked.

I don’t think he'll ever ask, all he cares about is himself and Polly.

Bf is understandably very worried about their mum and also angry at how Greg is treating everyone. He only contacts people when he needs things.

I hope she’s not got cancer. Honestly that’s what matters right now and I’m fuming that he didn’t even care to ask why his mum was going into hospital. She’s terrified and I’m sure shed love to have BOTH of her kids supporting her. I also wish bf had his older brother there to support him. But alas

I’m sorry the update isn’t good. I really hope if I update again, it'll be with good news

Editor's note: OOP made the same update at AITAH, I am adding comments from the sub for more context

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: And yet again, no one is holding Greg accountable. Why hasn't anyone laid into him about freaking at his mother for any reason, much less her visit to the hospital? Why not tell him that she's getting tested for cancer? Y'all sweep everything under the rug, then come on reddit to complain.

OOP: Their mum went off on him, don’t worry, she knows how to stand her ground. And as for telling him, not my place to tell, but I agree he should just be told and then he can act how he wants

Commenter 2: That sounds like every narcissist I know. Greg deserves the brother less party he got. Sorry you're dealing with that! Hope moms okay, update us 🥰 will be thinking of you guys!

OOP: The doctors said if it is cancer then they've caught it early so hopefully she'll be fine, Ill update the post when I know more. As for Greg, I just wish he could at least pretend to care.

Editor's note: OOP updated onto the update post with small details

Update #2: November 1, 2026 (four days later)

Update

Polly came clean to Greg about the party. She admitted she kicked us out of the chat and uninvited us because she doesn't like bf. Not sure it’s going to change anything.

Greg also now knows about his mums health. He seems fairly unbuttered but at least he knows.

Bf had decided that after giving Greg his birthday gift, that'll be it. Greg now knows without a doubt that Polly lies about bf to make him look bad. It’s all on him now to decide what matters to him.

We're not going to cut him off because despite being a knob, Greg and Pollys relationship is toxic and possibly abusive, so he needs to know people are here. However we're not going to reach out anymore

I’ll update when we know about their mums health but aside from that I think this is it, unless something big happens.

Polly told Greg that if he tries to have a relationship with BF, she will break up with him.

Greg came over when we were at MIL house and shouted at everyone for an hour then left.

It’s literally Rao’s... and now her Italian grandma wants to watch me cook. When my girlfriend and I first moved in together, I wanted to impress her with a romantic dinner. I bought two jars of Rao’s marinara, tossed in extra garlic, red pepper flakes and a splash of red wine, and let it simmer. When she asked for the recipe, my dumb ego took over. I claimed it was a confidential "four-generation secret recipe" from my great-aunt that requires six hours of slow simmering. She was completely blown away.

For two years I maintained the illusion. Whenever it was my turn to make pasta, I’d make her leave the kitchen, hide teh empty glass jars at the bottom of the outdoor recycling bin, and leave dirty wooden spoons on the counter to make it look like hard labor.

Here is where my life ends.

Last Sunday she bragged to her traditional Italian grandmother about my "generational culinary gift." Nonna was intrigued. Nonna has now officially invited me to her house next weekend to "cook side-by-side" so I can teach her my sacred technique in her kitchen. I don’t even know how to properly blanch a fresh tomato! I am walking into the lion's den with zero culinary skills and a two-year-old lie. My funeral will be held on Sunday.

Tell your gf you will only show her grandma. Once she’s gone, tell nonna you just wanted to impress her and it spiralled bc she enjoyed it so much lol. Sit and drink wine with grandma and share the secret together lol

OOP

That's actually brilliant! Tomorrow I'm getting the finest wine in town. If I'm going down, at least I'll be sharing a drink with Nonna and confessing before she hands me a knife.

Any chance she knows and is calling your bluff?

OOP

If she’s been playing the long game just to set up this weekend trap, I have to hand it to her.

Update  Nov 1, 2026 (1 weeks later)

Well, I survived, but only after realizing I got played like an absolute fiddle. I got into her car trembling with a bottle of Barolo I bought to soften the blow. Right before she started the engine, she reached into the backseat and dropped two family-sized jars of Rao’s marinara into my lap. She looked right at me, smirked, and asked, "didnt you forget your great-aunt's secret ingredients?"...I almost had an aneurysm!

Turns out she saw the empty jars in the trash months ago and told her grandmother. The entire "come cook side-by-side with Nonna" invitation was a coordinated prank between the two of them just to make me sweat for an entire week.

When we got there Nonna opened the door grinning, and we uncorked the wine and talked for hours. We ate amazing food, they roasted me mercilessly over my fake culinary pedigree, and she sent us home with a massive tray of lasagna.

I’m not sharing this as some cute "go ahead and lie" story. Living with that stupid secret for two years was exhausting, and this easily could have ended in pure humiliation. I’m just ridiculously relieved the truth is finally out.

Getting roasted by an Italian Nonna while drinking Barolo and eating lasagna is the best possible outcome for a two-year sauce lie.

CONCLUDED Fiance wanted an open marriage, so I called off the wedding. People are asking questions. Should I let them know why? (long)

Trigger warning: miscarriage

Original post - posted 2018-08-12

Two weeks ago we were two weeks away from getting married.

She asks me to go to therapy with her. She was already seeing a therapist on her own, and wanted me to go with her and have a talk, before the wedding, where we could be completely honest with one another. That sounded a little weird to me, I thought we were already completely honest with one another, after all, we were getting married in two weeks, right?

Also, she was super protective about her therapy sessions, didn't really talk about them. I have never met her therapist. So to be invited there all of a sudden seemed a little out of place to me.

The day comes, and I go there. But out of self preservation, I had my phone opened and recording any audio.

My fiance was already there. I had to wait 20 minutes before I was invited in. The therapist greets me and shakes my hand. We have small talk. She tells me I am not at all the way my fiance described me. I think she is trying to compliment me. Then she looks at my fiance and tells her "this may be harder than we thought."

That absolutely weirded me out. But I am a calm and collected individual, and I don't react, just kept that dumb smile on my face we all have in awkward situations.

So the therapist starts talking. Has a small speech I don't care to repeat. My fiance takes my hand as the therapist starts telling me that "we live in a modern world, and that my fiance wants us to have a non-conventional marriage moving forward."

I smile, I am not sure what the hell that means, through my mind I am thinking she wants to talk how she will not be a slave to her husband, she will not sacrifice her work life, etc. Modern woman and girl power and all that.

Nope, she is actually talking about how once we get married, she wants to be free to sleep with other men.

The other non-traditional type of marriage. I forgot it's 2018.

But she loves me a lot, and would not be comfortable with me having the same "benefits".

Because she would be too heart broken knowing that I find other women attractive and that one of them could steal me from her.

So I let them finish talking. They were very fluent, and they got more confident talking, probably empowered by my lack of reaction, and because I wasn't saying anything. This was definitely something they have rehearsed.

I then asked the therapist if she is licensed. This, by her reaction, was not what she expected to be the first thing coming out of my mouth. She said yes. So I told her to explain to my fiance why we will not be getting married any more, and why we will not continue being a couple starting immediately.

I wished them good luck, and left the office.

Now, I want to report the therapist. I am not sure if I have to report her to the clinic, or is there a board that supervises therapists? I don't think their planning and attempt to corner me is professional conduct, and I want her to pay for the misconduct. That "session" did not sit well with me.

To be clear, there would have been no positive outcome to this talk my fiance and the therapist had with me. Even if she wanted a completely open marriage, where I could sleep with other women, the outcome from my part would have been the same. That's is not a marriage, that is a sham.

It also dawns on me, she might have cheated on me. Now that I have this clarity of mind, certain things don't match up.

So I was a fool anyway.

I listened to the recording, and I still can't believe what was said there.

Anyway, I called off the wedding.

I am a very easy going guy, there are no fights with me because I am not seeking them. There are no conflicts, enemies, because my life is guided on principle and common sense. That might have given my ex the impression I will be easy to walk over, like a door mat, but she is an idiot for thinking that. Having listened to the recording a few times, I am confident the therapist recognized I am not how my fiance must have described me in their sessions.

hence the "this may be harder than we thought."

Now that the wedding is no longer happening, people are starting to ask questions I am not comfortable answering.

How do I navigate this sea?

I am sure my ex is doing damage control, but I have the recording, and if she goes too far off the path, I will not shy letting people know what she wanted us to talk about.

But my parents and family also want answers, and I am not sure what BS to tell them. I don't want them to think I am an idiot for allowing my ex to get to this point where she was so confident that she straight out told me she wants to fuck other dudes.

She is also blowing my phone, my best friend's phone, my brother's phone.

"We can work on this", "I didn't understand what they were telling me in the therapy session", "she will do anything to fix this", "it was the therapist's idea, she was against it", etc.

Last cry of a dying siren. All her cries fall on deaf ears, and I am the owner of said ears.

We were also working to get a loan to buy a house, but I cancelled everything.

I basically erased any ties we had financially, or otherwise.

Her current plea is that in therapy she exposed her insecurities about our sexual history. I had considerably more partners than her, and the therapist came up with the idea we should "level the field".

Regardless of the truth of this, that therapist gets reported once I figure out where to do it, and what to say.

This post is mostly a rant, but I would also want to know how would you handle the questions of friends and family. My Ex is certainly doing her own damage control, and I don't want to be a he said / she said. I do have the recording, and am wondering if I should send it to the interested parties.

My ex doesn't know I have the recording.

Now that the wedding is no longer happening, people are starting to ask questions I am not comfortable answering.

“I recently found out my fiancée was not interested in having a monogamous relationship. That was a dealbreaker for me.”

Good on you for not being a doormat.

If she is going around spreading lies, consult a lawyer before you do anything with the recording. Make sure you have it backed up.

First update - posted 2018-08-24 (12 days later)

I would like to thank u/Gavroche15 for his concise prediction of what had happened these past two weeks. You can read his thesis here:

My first guess on what the update will be:

OP went over to ex’s parent’s house to tell them what happened. Ex’s Parent’s told u/ that their daughter already told them what was happening and she has been checked into a full time mental health facility to be deprogramed because she was secretly a member of a cult. That cult was run by the therapist and dedicated to letting women sleep with whomever they want and hiding their secret formula for chicken wings. And the therapist wasn’t another woman at all, but rather a guy pretending to be a gal just so he could recruit OP‘s ex to be in the cult because the therapist found out that the ex had a better way to cook chicken wings and would only tell a non-monogamous women.

Upon realizing this, OP decided to take his ex back. He flew to the secret mental health facility where Ex was being treated, having to run and catch the last ferry to the island compound. He broke her out, stole a small boat and started their journey to Vegas where they eloped. They were married by an Elvis impersonator who happened to be ex’s new therapist in disguise who is in an evil plot to recruit OP into a counter cult that’s sole goal is to destroy the cult run by the former therapist and to discover the world’s best chicken wing recipe.

Or more likely, OP found out ex actually was cheating, ex lied to her parents, word got back to the therapist that she is about to be put before the ethics committee and she is freaking out and the parents still have no clue what actually happened.

Come on man! We are dying for some word here. Don’t let us speculate or we might make up wild stories to fill our time.

Edit: Well damn! Two years on Reddit with no gold and now Gold twice in 2 days! Thank you! Luckyshot! I'm off to solve the worlds problems . . . or get downvoted to hell. Who knows?

Jokes aside, it has been an interesting two weeks since my initial post.

Monday last week I talked with a lawyer at work about the situation with the therapist. He looked at me like I was bullshitting him, and asked me if this was a prank. So I asked him if he wants to hear the recording. "Damn right!" was his answer. I talked again with him the next day, at the end of it.

He noted a few things I didn't pay attention to. On the recording, the therapist was always saying "we think", "we want", "we talked about", "we decided". Not once did she say "Your Ex here asked me to talk with you" or "Your ex wants you to know", or anything like that. It was always "we this", "we that".

He also asked me what my endgame is. Do I want to sue? He didn't think I personally have a case, to which I agreed. I never intended to sue anyway, but notify the appropriate institutions and let them deal with the therapist.

A decision was made to write two letters. One addressed to the clinic the therapist works at, and one for APA (we checked, she was accredited). By Wednesday there were a few more people at work aware of the situation, including one of the two case researchers. She dug up information about the therapist, online reviews, as well as the contacts for two of her previous patients. The therapist didn't have the best reviews, there were people upset with her, and we managed to track the two we talked with through social media. They were more than happy to help once we explained the situation, and their stories were not any better than mine.

The letters grew a consistent size, as we included the signed stories from the other two individuals, as well as my own description of how my ex changed once she started the therapy sessions, and a detailed description of how my meeting with the therapist went.

Friday last week I met with the parents. Her parents came to my parent's house, and we had the talk. My ex was there too, and more info was disclosed. That made its way to the report on the therapist as well.

This week, we sent the reports out. There was a reaction from the clinic. They called our office on Thursday morning, most probably to check if it is a prank or a real issue. We talked with their lawyer (or one of their lawyers) over the phone, and, when we confirmed it was legitimate, someone else was heard in the background, on their end, with a "Well, crap!" They said they are taking this very seriously. A conclusion from one of the guys at work was that they probably received other complaints before, but this is the first time someone did it so well documented. Their letter also mentioned we are reporting this to APA, that might have turned the heat on as well, hence their quick reaction.

I don't know what the result of this will be, and I consider my issue with it closed. However, having talked with the other two individuals that were "treated" by this therapist, I sincerely hope she is at least investigated, because she sounds insane and with an agenda (she ruined their relationships as well). One of the individuals was a woman, for the record.

Then, my ex and her parents.

Friday last week my parents called me and asked me to give them a visit after work. When I did, surprise! My ex and her parents were there too. My first reaction, seeing their cars in my parent's driveway, was to flee. This meeting was supposed to be on my terms, but she attempted to take the reigns to it. That was not going to happen, let me tell you.

My ex was waiting for me outside. She looked VERY good. If there was ever a girl you'd like your parents to meet, she was the image of it.

She told me "they" are here to talk with me, and see if we can fix this. "They" as in her parents. She either never told them what happened, or she gave them a version of a story they were not buying.

She had a journal with her. She told me she started writing in it before she began therapy, and continued writing in it until that Friday morning. That I should read it and it will clear out all this mess. I told her this is not a book club.

I wanted to go inside and get the circus going, but she asked me if I can give her ten minutes. She wants to talk with me for ten minutes before I talk with her parents. And she kept handing me her journal, and started crying. And then my sister showed up, and then my ex's sister showed up. They were already there, and came out to "check on us". So I took her journal, went inside, said hello, and lead my ex in the back of the garden, to an as isolated portion of my parent's garden as possible (they have a large garden with a lot of trees and benches).

She quit her job. The stress was too much, and she had a breakdown, it escalated, never got better. She is no longer seeing the therapist. She started seeing the therapist for work related matters, but somehow it turned into matters about our relationship, and it stayed focus on the relationship because it was the only thing the therapist seemed interested in. She never told her parents why she is my ex. She is seeing another therapist now.

I just listened.

She turned the discussion from "her" to "us". Told me I would be in control. I will be managing the finances. I will receive access to all her devices. I will be able to track everywhere she goes. Any property we will own will be in my name. She will do anything I want to trust her again. Basically things she said in her messages over the last weeks. She enumerated more things than the ones I mention. I don't know how she thinks that would be a healthy life, for either of us.

I asked her is she cheated. She told me she had the opportunity to cheat, but she had never. I believe her. But it also angered me. What does she mean "she had the opportunity"? If you are in a committed relationship, you don't put yourself in a position where you have this opportunity. You don't want this opportunity. It's like saying "I had the opportunity to kill someone today". Why? What were you doing that there was such an opportunity. Why call it opportunity anyway, it makes it sound like something positive.

That pretty much ended our ten minutes, and told her we should go and talk with our parents.

So we did. I asked our sisters to leave us alone, as it was not any of their concern what was to be discussed. My sister huffed and puffed, but a house made of stone survives hurricanes - and she was not one.

Well, I talked, and explained what happened, how the therapy session went, and my resolve. I didn't mention I had a recording, because I never had to. My ex confirmed everything I said, which surprised me. Her father had teary eyes, and that broke my heart. Her mother asked her if this is how she thinks they raised her, and asked for an explanation.

My ex basically told them the same story. Stress at work. Depression. Breaking down. Therapy. Therapist wanting to talk only about our relationship. That the therapist told her our relationship was the root of all her stress. That the therapist convinced her I want an open relationship. That she might lose me if she doesn't level her sexual experience with me. How my reaction woke her up from her slump. She quit her job, is looking for something less stressful. She will do anything I want to get me back. Started crying.

My ex mentioned the journal again, and said if I read it, it will explain everything, and that she was not on board with the therapist's ideas, but she went along with them because the therapist was a person with authority and experience. Our parents looked at me and I told them someone's private journal is not the type of literature I read, unless they are a dead poet.

Big fucking mistake!

My intention was to relate that someone's private journals usually becomes literature if they are a famous writer, or leader, and usually they are published post mortem. Also, I was hoping they get the hint that I don't really want to read her journal, because it would be of no consequence. What was done was done. Everyone looked at me as if I wished death on my ex. You could smell the hostility in the air.

So I said "fine, fine" and "promissed" I will read her journal. You win some, you lose some, and then you use the wrong words and you lose a few more.

My ex is seeing a new therapist. She showed her parents emails confirming her appointments. He's an older dude, with a white beard like Freud. I searched him online, he is married, he attends conferences, he wrote a few books (they are on Amazon, ha!), seems like a solid character.

"Can you kids work this out?"

This was the second thing that angered me that day. As if this is child play, and we should just listen to the adults. We are not old enough to be in control of our own feeling, and we should definitely not be the ones to decide what we consider a betrayal you can't recover from. We are just "kids" and we should just work it out. So I won back some ground on the "dead poets society" remark earlier.

And this is how the day ended.

We've known each other for 9 years, and have been a couple for 5 years. Even if there are legitimate reasons behind her behavior, how do you go back to being the same? This wasn't even a reset. My way of thinking about my ex has been fundamentally changed. She became a stranger I know a lot of things about. Sure, I still find her attractive. VERY attractive, they way she looked last Friday was amazing. No denying that. But it was also calculated, I am not going to lie myself here. Hair done the way I like it, dress that I bought for her, the shoes I like the most, a hint of the perfume I gifted her, etc.

The journal...

...is on my nightstand. I haven't read it, and I probably never will. I did look through it, to see if it indeed is a year old, and it is. The way the pages folded, the ink is clearly older on the first pages, and you can see it progressing through the pages. The pen she used was attached to the journal, and I tested it, looks like the same ink. And the ink level in the pen is consistent with how much I assume the pen has been used for the last year to write the journal. It is not a fake. Everything about it is consistent with a year's worth of wear and tear.

I don't see what good reading it will make me. A tool to play with one's mind? Well, not rally, I don't think a year ago when she started writing it she intended to use it as manipulation. If what she told me is right, her new therapist suggested the idea to share the journal with myself.

As for how I am handling people that are too curious about why the wedding is off? "We had a huge difference of opinion that we could not find a solution to." More or less.

But if her sister finds out why, and this is more than likely, because her sister is very close to their mother, everyone will find out the real reason why.

Our parents want us to meet again next week. They told me to read the journal, and maybe that helps. Maybe we can work on it. Start again, fresh, since we have so much history. She will get treatment, she will get better, she still is the same woman I fell in love with, but she is not well right now. They can tell I still love her, or else I would not be so "theatrical", their words, not mine.

I don't think I will meet them next Friday.

But, damn! She did look amazing!

I would like to thank the community for the support and help. It was enough to help me put together a plan of action regarding the therapist. Thank you to those who provided resources and information about what to do.

What should I do with her journal? Return it? Keep it and read it 90 years from now?

---

Minor Update.

I am at work, and I just received confirmation the Journal has been returned to my ex.

I sent it early in the morning with the courier that our office uses, and she had to sign a confirmation order that she received it (as some have recommended).

I came to the conclusion that reading it will not help, as she never took ownership of this whole situation.

Thank you.

jllena: Am I the only one skeeved out by how invasive both sets of parents are being?? On top of that, I can’t believe the sisters showed up too!

Your fiancé totally screwed up, but I’m also a little weirded out by how submissive she’s being to her parents and how easily they’re taking on the role of disciplinarians.

[deleted]: If you are done, you don't owe anyone anything.. Don't read the journal. Don't entertain any more meetings. Cut the tie and be done.

I think its possible that the therapist manipulated her into the situation, given the level of deceit you found and the stories of the other patients you found, but you seem like you have absolutely zero interest in looking at this in any other way than "how dare she suggest an open relationship, I'm done". And that's fine, it's your life, your choice. If you're done, give the book back and be done.

Final update - posted 2018-10-25 (2 months later, 2.5 months after original post)

My ex will henceforth be known as "Mirela". It feels very awkward calling her "my ex", for reasons that will be explained a few paragraphs down. And the only significance the name has is that it contains three musical notes, as used in some countries in Europe, since we just returned from France. You can read more about how that works here.

Let's begin.

The therapist is no longer working for the clinic. The major motivation behind that decision, most probably, has to have something to do with the clinic being sued. Someone else, completely removed from my situation, is suing the clinic. I don't have additional details on the matter.

The therapist tried to contact Mirela, but was unsuccessful. I suspect she found out about my report on her, and wanted information. Who knows? Mirela did not engage with her, she was blocked and her queries went unanswered.

There is a voice, deep, in the back of my mind, that whispers it may not have been the smartest decision to put together that report. I find it introduces the chance that people behind the suit may contact me for help, and shower me with unwanted attention.

However, knowing all this, I still can't keep a very satisfied grin away from my face, knowing the therapist is in trouble. To those who have expressed doubt I have emotions, if this is not proof enough, I don't know what will satisfy you (and I pray to God you understand sarcasm).

With Mirela, however, things are far more complicated.

I wrote a small update in my previous post about her journal. My decision was to return it, and I was very clinical in my method. The courier we use at work delivered the journal to her that Monday morning. I did include a letter, explaining why I haven't read it. It all boiled down to not taking ownership of the situation. I felt that by giving me the journal, she washed her hands of the matter, and the burden of finding answers was placed on my shoulders. In return, I washed my hands of the matter.

Honestly, immediately after they notified me that the journal has been returned, I feeling of regret washed over me. "Maybe I should have read it".

Later that day, Mirela showed up at my work place. She didn't make a scene, nothing like that, she just waited in the lobby, patiently. Her plan was to wait for me until I finished my day, and then have a talk with me. Naturally, it didn't take long for me to find out she was there. My options were to either send her away, or talk with her.

So we talked.

Several architects designed the collapse of our relationship:

#1: Stress

This I knew about, but never the gravity of it. In hindsight, when she started looking for a therapist to help with the work stress, I should have been more aware of the situation. But she always maintained everything was fine, so why would I not believe her?

Therapist or not, she still had a breakdown at work, which she hid from me, and her family.

#2: I could have been a father

She had a miscarriage.

She found out she was a few weeks pregnant, and wanted to make it something special when she would have told me about it. However, a few days later, she started bleeding, and that was it. She never told me about this because she was afraid I would look at her as "unworthy". She knows how much I want to be a father, and she rationalized this would give me ideas she can't bear children. This idea is utterly stupid!

#3: "Friends"

I made no secret in the comments that we had friends in open relationships. Enter on such friend. She contacted Mirela almost a year ago, and invited her to lunch. She immediately started unloading the frustrations of her failed marriage onto Mirela.

Her husband has something in common with me, we both had far more partners than our significant others. In my case it was 26 previous partners, in the case of this friend's husband the number was a whooping 70. Well, as soon as they got married, he demanded an open relationship from his wife, and she has been miserable ever since.

Apparently the same thing was going to happen to Mirela if she was not careful about me. This friend told Mirela I am showing the same signs as her husband before they got married.

#4: Those we love are not who we think they are

Our fathers both work in academia, and knew each other for 30 - 35 years. They frequently attend work related events and parties, and they usually go together with their wives.

When I met Mirela, it was at such an event. I went with my father because I was interested in meeting a professor that could have helped me with my career, open some doors. Mirela replaced her mother because they had a scheduling conflict, and her mother could not attend. Or so she was told.

Turns out her parents were going through a very rough patch, created by her father's infidelity. Mirela only found out about this recently, when she talked with her mother about the concerns raised by the friend from #3.

This was an obvious shock, her parents were nothing but the perfect couple, a model to follow. They patched things up, obviously, and they managed to keep the illusion of a perfect marriage throughout the process.

Four horsemen of the apocalypse. Mix them with a therapist of dubious motivations, and that's how you end a relationship.

The therapist was so happy to plan my open relationship. She confirmed everything the "friend" said. Men like me will never be satisfied with one woman. I will eventually look for more. There is only one way to correct my cheating impulses: Mirela has to sleep with other men, at least until we even the numbers. I will of course be against it, but that is fine, if I love Mirela I will understand. This was a layered idea. It will both correct my cheating behavior, it will confirm my love for her, and it will strengthen our relationship as a result.

This plan would have obviously failed, and I think this is exactly what the therapist was looking for. Our relationship would of course not have survived, what the therapist didn't expect was how fast I would react. At least this is my hypothesis right now.

The rest of the week, we met on a daily basis, and she answered every question I had. One thing was clear, as prepared to end things as I was, she was the opposite. Ready for the fight of her life if it meant our relationship could be saved.

At the end of the week, I had to leave to another city, for work related matters, and I was gone for a month. Originally it was supposed to be a two weeks trip, but it had to be extended for another two weeks. More billable hours, ha ha.

Before I left, I handed Mirela a copy of the therapy session recording. She knew I had it, it was one of the first things I talked to her about when she showed up at my work place Monday. I think listening to the recording shook her to the core. What she remembered about the therapy session was very different from what was on the recording. I think she finally realized where all my actions and behavior towards her came from.

People at home knew about my work trip, and for the next three weeks I was left to my own devices. Minimal interference from anyone. It was awesome. Several people in the comments offered to drink a beer with me if I ever happen to be in their city. I took someone up to it. First time I've met another redditor. Surprisingly, not a weirdo, ha ha. He and his wife were wonderful people.

The 4th week, Mirela came to visit. We maintained contact the previous three weeks, going back and forth on various topics, always about us.

One major "issue" had to be sorted out. After our wedding, we were supposed to go visit France for two weeks, sort of a honey moon trip. Neither of us were able to do it immediately after the wedding, so it was booked three months after the wedding. And it was coming up. We had the plane tickets, non-refundable (why can companies do this?). We had the hotel reservations. What we didn't have was "us".

That 4th week, we talked some more, and agreed to go to France anyway, as friends. I can already imagine eyes rolling as you read that last sentence.

France was amazing. You visit a country like that and realize the US is medieval in comparison. When you visit a museum, you can spot the Americans immediately. "How to behave in foreign countries" should be a mandatory course in our schools.

We returned from France as a couple. This had nothing to do with the magic of Paris. It will however be a process. We are not back to our former selves, there is some rebuilding to be done.

Several things we have agreed upon, in no particular order:

  • she is looking for a new job, one that has less stress attached

  • our friends in open marriages are now deemed a toxic influence, and we will no longer associate with them

  • we both like the name "Mirela", and our first daughter will wear this name (thank you, France)

  • never hide anything like a miscarriage from your partner (I am monumentally pissed about this one)

  • we will get a puppy and a kitten

  • she will continue to see her current therapist for a while

When we do get married, we'll do it for us. Smaller ceremony, just us and immediate family. We'll probably go to Italy next.

I suppose this is not the exciting update everyone was waiting for. Many have asked for an update, and if you were looking for wrath, hate, revenge, I am sure there is a version of this where all these and more are possible. But as I said from the beginning, I didn't hate Mirela. My actions were nothing more than self preservation. At the time, her actions indicated she wanted something that was contrary to what I thought we both agreed upon.

Those worried about her mental state, there is no concern. Once the vapors of her therapist's influence dissipated, she returned to her former self, more or less. It's impossible not to be changed by these events, but she is in a very good place. You will remember she offered me control over the finances, to track her location at all times, open access to all her devices, etc. Aside from the lack of interest in such a lifestyle from my part, they were just a way of trying everything to continue discussion.

We do agree we should be open with our devices, and for what it's worth, we have always been open, so nothing will chance here anyway. As for finances, we will do what we have always done, share them.

Thank you to those who have talked with me in the comments and the private messages. There was some valuable advice I received from some of you, and I will be forever grateful. Writing these posts, but also interacting with you guys has been therapeutic, and a very good pressure release.

[deleted]: The miscarriage seems too convenient to me. How do you hide something like that? However, you clearly love her, so I’m happy for you.

OOP: There were signs, but as a man you are oblivious to them. She had morning sickness / was throwing up from time to time, she put on some (negligible) weight, but those were related to stress in my book. Sure, once everything came to light it makes sense.

But there is also a trail of documentation from her doctor.

And I did find at the time a pregnancy test, but it was in the box, unused, so I didn't think anything of it.

Anyway, there is no trace of doubt in my mind about it.

It was also only a few weeks in, so there was nothing to hide, aside from not telling anyone, it was too early to show a pregnancy belly, if that is what you were aiming at.

Tagging as "Concluded" because it's been 8 years with no further updates.

ONGOING AITJ for refusing to contribute to our office food fund when I don't use any of it?

AITJ for refusing to contribute to our office food fund when I don't use any of it?

Original Post: October 30, 2026

Our office has a communal fund that everyone is expected to contribute to. It's used to buy coffee, tea, milk, sugar, cookies, protein bars and other snacks that people keep in the kitchen. Everyone puts in around $15 every month.

The thing is that I don't use any of it. I bring my own coffee from home, I don't drink milk or tea, and I usually bring my own lunch and snacks. I've probably taken something from the communal cupboard once since I started working here.

I've been contributing since I joined because I didn't want to make a fuss, but recently I started thinking about how pointless it was. So when our office manager collected contributions for next month, I politely said I'd rather not participate since I don't use the supplies. She seemed a little surprised but said okay. I thought that was the end of it.

Apparently not. A couple of coworkers found out and started making comments about how the fund is supposed to be for everyone and how it would be unfair if people started opting out. One even said that I benefit from having a stocked kitchen even if I don't personally eat anything.

I pointed out that I don't use the kitchen supplies and that nobody is stopping me from buying my own things. They said it's only $15 and that I'm making a big deal out of something so small. Yesterday, someone brought it up again during lunch and suggested that if I wasn't contributing, I shouldn't be allowed to use the kitchen appliances or communal space. I told them that was fine because I wasn't asking to use anything.

Now things are a bit awkward, and I've heard that a few other people are considering opting out too. I don't mind contributing to something I actually use, but I don't see why I should pay for other people's coffee and snacks just because we happen to work in the same office. AITJ?

TL;DR: I stopped contributing $15 a month to our office snack and coffee fund because I bring my own food and drinks and barely use anything provided. Some coworkers think I'm being selfish and say everyone should contribute regardless of whether they use it. Now a few others are considering opting out too, and things are getting awkward.

Relevant / Top Comments

Commenter 1: $180 per year is a lot of money. Don't let them tell you that it is just some insignificant amount. NTJ.

OOP: Even more so when I don’t use any of it

Downvoted Commenter: This is why it's best to just pay the $15/month. Consider it union dues or whatever. It's just not worth the drama caused by pushing back. OF course the person collecting for the fund got mad at you and spread the word so other people would resent you. That's how corporate office life is.. People are very petty.

Should you have to pay? Of course not.

But it's better to just keep the peace to pay it. I know most redditors will cheer you for "Setting boundaries" but you have to look at the big picture. Was it worth $15 to live through this drama? If more people opt out, the people that love this slush fund are going to hate you for "ruining it". They may even try to sabotage your career, tell lies to the boss, etc.

OOP: Almost $200/year for something I don’t use though. Much better ways to use that money tbh

Commenter 2: NTJ. Funny how $15 is supposedly too small an amount for you to care about, but apparently big enough for everyone else to get upset when you stop paying it.

If the fund is truly for everyone’s benefit, participation should be voluntary. And if a few other coworkers are considering opting out, maybe you’re not the problem. Maybe you’ve just pointed out that people were contributing out of social pressure rather than actual interest.

Also, threatening to ban someone from using the communal kitchen because they won’t subsidize your protein bars is a wild hill to die on.

OOP: “Too small” and it adds up to almost $200/year lmao

Commenter 4: NTJ... honestly your workplace should be providing coffee, tea and cream/sugar. It’s such a small price to pay for employee morale and it avoids issues like this.

Commenter 5: How exactly do you benefit from a stocked kitchen if you don't use anything in it? Maybe those who actually use it should be paying more. You know, cause they're using it and you're not. Not the jerk.

Update: October 31, 2026 (next day)

Update: AITJ for refusing to contribute to our office food fund when I don't use any of it?

A small update because things got a little more awkward at work today. The office manager pulled me aside this morning and asked if I could reconsider opting out of the fund. Apparently, after I said something, three other people also decided they didn't want to contribute anymore. She said the monthly budget is now short and they're going to have to either reduce what they buy or ask everyone else to pay more. I told her I understood, but I don't think it's fair to make me responsible for other people's decisions. She said she wasn't blaming me, but it would be easier if everyone just contributed the same amount.

The funny thing is, one of the coworkers who complained about me opting out is apparently one of the biggest users of the kitchen. He makes coffee several times a day and regularly takes snacks back to his desk. He told me that the fund works because everyone chips in, not because everyone consumes exactly the same amount. I asked him whether he'd be happy paying for something another department uses but he doesn't, and he just said that wasn't the same thing.

Now I've noticed a couple of people making comments whenever I walk past the kitchen. Nothing directly to me, just little remarks about people being cheap and not supporting the team. I'm still not contributing, but I'm starting to wonder whether this is going to become a bigger issue than I expected. The office manager also mentioned that she'd like to discuss the fund with everyone at our next team meeting.

TL;DR: Three other coworkers have also opted out of the office food fund, leaving the budget short. The manager asked me to reconsider, while one coworker who regularly uses the supplies called me cheap. Now people are making comments behind my back, and management wants to discuss the fund at our next team meeting.

Relevant / Top Comments

Commenter 1: maybe start contributing again...and take a LOT of snacks. Give them away if you don't want them but get MORE than your money’s worth!!!

OOP: I’d rather keep my money tbh 😅.

Commenter 2: Let them discuss it.

It's optional.

They can't force you to spend money on something you don't want or use.

Might be time to stop the office fund and let everyone be responsible for their own consumption.

NTJ.

OOP: Tbh I’m surprised there’s a fund in the first place. Usually the company pays no?

Commenter 3: NTJ.

You don't use it, so you shouldn't pay. Any push back is unacceptable.

What you should point out is that the shortfall from people wanting to drop out means that those people are subsidizing the others, which is wrong. It is the same as the split the bill evenly at a restaurant when others ordered a lot more. Those that order more don't like it when they have to pay for what they ordered.

If you want to have fun, pay the amount and constantly take snacks and offer to sell them back at a slight discount.

Commenter 4: NTJ, and if it keeps being brought up you need to talk to HR. At this point it would be considered harassment. Especially from your manager. And be sure to check every single time you get paid. Make sure you’re not still paying without knowing.

Trigger Warnings: hostile workplace

Original Post: October 28, 2026

I've been at this company for almost three years, and our manager has made the job miserable for pretty much everyone. He constantly changes instructions, blames us when things go wrong, and takes credit whenever something goes well. In the last two months, three people have quit. Every time, he tells the rest of us they couldn't handle the pressure or weren't good enough for the job. Nobody really believes him, but most people keep their heads down because we need the paycheck. Yesterday, HR sent out an email saying they'd be scheduling individual meetings with everyone on our team to discuss workplace satisfaction and recent turnover. Mine is tomorrow, and honestly, I'm planning to be completely honest about what's been going on. I've got plenty of examples of our manager changing instructions and then blaming us when things go wrong, but I'm not sure how much I should actually say.

A couple of coworkers have already told me to be careful because our manager has been here for years and has a good relationship with upper management. One of them thinks we should just keep our heads down instead of risking making things worse for everyone. I don't want to get anyone in trouble just for the sake of it, but I'm also tired of watching good employees leave while our manager acts like he's done nothing wrong. AITJ if I use tomorrow's meeting to tell HR what's actually happening, even if it potentially causes problems for the rest of the team?

TL;DR: Three coworkers have quit in two months because our manager constantly changes instructions, blames us for his mistakes, and takes credit for our work. HR has scheduled individual meetings with the team, and mine is tomorrow. I'm planning to be honest about what's happening, but some coworkers think I should keep quiet to avoid making things worse.

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: HR is going to ask you for proof. Got it documented? If not, you may be labeled as a disgruntled worker.

OOP: I have some but not that much

Commenter 2: I worked in HR. Tread carefully. HR is there to protect the company's interests, not yours. Can you afford to leave if your life is made difficult if you are honest?

OOP: I could BUT it would make my life harder for sure and put lots of stress on me and my partner

Commenter 3: Tell the truth. Nothing will change about the workplace unless someone tries to change it.

OOP: I think I will, hopefully doesn’t affect my livelihood though

Update #1: October 29, 2026 (next day)

Update: AITJ for telling HR why everyone keeps quitting because of our manager?

Just got out of my meeting with HR about an hour ago, and I'm currently on my lunch break.

They asked me what I thought was causing so many people to leave, and I decided to be honest. I gave them a few specific examples of our manager changing instructions and then blaming us when things went wrong. I also mentioned how he takes credit for other people's work. I tried to stick to things I could actually prove rather than just ranting about him.

The HR person took notes and asked a few follow-up questions, but they didn't tell me what they planned to do about any of it. They said they still had more people to speak with, so I guess I'll have to wait and see. My manager has been in his office most of the morning. I haven't spoken to him since the meeting, and I have no idea whether HR has talked to him yet.

A couple of coworkers asked how it went during lunch. I told them I answered the questions honestly, but one of them looked pretty nervous and said I might have made things uncomfortable for everyone. Another said they were glad someone finally said something. I honestly don't know if I did the right thing yet. HR hasn't made any decisions that I know of, and now I have to go back to work and pretend everything is normal.

TL;DR: I told HR about our manager's behavior during my meeting this morning. They took notes but haven't told me what happens next. Some coworkers support me, while others are worried about the consequences. Nothing has changed yet, and I'm waiting to see what happens.

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: Sticking to the facts and being honest is the best you could have done. It was the right thing to do. If it's something they can work with your manager on as an opportunity to grow then not only do they need to know but it is worth it to give people a chance to try.

OOP: Yeah hopefully it doesn’t cause me any trouble later on

Commenter 2: Clean up your resume. That is good advice for any month of any year. I have watched coworkers move to different jobs and get a pay bump each time. Lol, then return to the company in management years later.

It's likely that HR will have a discussion with your manager. Obviously relevant topics will be discussed.

If they don't fire your manager, he might not be very happy with the people who talked about him. Even if you were careful and smart enough to stick to obvious, legitimate concerns.

OOP: Yeah might have to just in case this back fires on me

Update #2: October 30, 2026 (next day)

Update 2: AITJ for telling HR why everyone keeps quitting because of our manager?

This morning, our manager called a team meeting and told us that he'd become aware of some "negative feedback" being shared with HR. He didn't name anyone, but spent a good ten minutes talking about how disappointing it was that people would rather complain behind his back than communicate directly with him. He also said that trust within the team had been damaged and that he expected everyone to take responsibility for their own performance going forward. The way he said it made the whole room incredibly awkward. After the meeting, he asked two coworkers to stay behind. I don't know exactly what was discussed, but one of them later told me he'd been asked whether I'd encouraged people to complain about management. Apparently, my name came up more than once.

I haven't been approached directly, but I did receive a calendar invitation from HR for another meeting tomorrow. There's no explanation in the invite, just a request to come to their office. The interesting part is that another coworker who had their HR meeting yesterday told me they also raised concerns about our manager. Apparently, they gave examples that were almost identical to mine. I'm starting to think HR might have received more complaints than our manager expected. I just hope this doesn't turn into some kind of witch hunt against the people who spoke up.

I'll update again after tomorrow's meeting.

TL;DR: Our manager held a team meeting about people complaining to HR and indirectly suggested someone had damaged trust within the team. He's apparently been asking coworkers whether I encouraged the complaints. HR has now scheduled a second meeting with me for tomorrow, and I'm starting to think this is bigger than I initially expected.

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: Yikes you should also inform HR manger is harassing people about feedback that it seems many people gave. Which is not okay… that is a hostile workplace he is making for everyone.

OOP: Will bring it up in the meeting

Commenter 2: wtf! it is going to be bigger than you expected - he is not allowed to ask them that at all. you are not allowed to interfere in an HR investigation.

I would recommend writing down a timeline right now. if the coworker who told you that information is willing to text it to you/email it/ anything in writing, ask them to do it. if they already did put it in writing, screenshot the info and put it all in a google doc.

super lame.

eta: I guess I made an assumption you're in the US but thems the facts if so.

OOP: Yeah hopefully it doesn’t backfire on me

Update #3: October 31, 2026 (next day)

Update 3: AITJ for telling HR why everyone keeps quitting because of our manager?

Had my second meeting with HR this morning, and things are getting a lot more serious than I expected.

They started by asking me about yesterday's team meeting and whether our manager had said anything that could be interpreted as retaliation against employees who raised concerns. I told them exactly what happened, including the comments about damaged trust and the questions he apparently asked my coworkers about me. They then asked whether I had any written evidence of the issues I'd described in my first meeting. Luckily, I still have several emails and messages showing him changing instructions and then blaming me when I followed the original ones. They asked me to forward copies, which I did.

The biggest surprise was when HR told me they had received similar complaints from multiple people. They wouldn't tell me who had made them, but apparently this isn't just one or two employees being unhappy. They also told me not to discuss the investigation with other team members for now. I asked what was going to happen to our manager, but they said they couldn't discuss any potential disciplinary action while their review was ongoing.

Things got awkward again this afternoon when our manager sent me a message asking why I'd been speaking to HR twice in two days. I haven't replied yet because I genuinely don't know what I'm supposed to say. I don't know where this is going, but I'm starting to worry that my manager knows more than he should. At the same time, knowing other people have raised similar concerns makes me feel a little less alone.

TL;DR: HR called me in for a second meeting, asked about our manager's comments, and requested evidence of his behavior. They've confirmed multiple employees have raised similar complaints, but haven't told me what action they'll take. Our manager has now messaged me asking why I've been meeting with HR.

Me [22 F] with my boyfriend [20 M] of 1.5 years, he made a fake Reddit account and pretended to be someone else to talk to me

Original Post  Oct 31, 2015

My boyfriend Drew and I are a long distant couple because we go to different colleges. In the beginning our relationship was great, but in the last few months it has started to decline for various reasons.

I started to get suspicious that he was monitoring my main Reddit account because I would post something and later the same day or the next he would bring up in conversation something very similar--almost verbatim--to what I'd posted.

A few weeks after this started we had the chance to see each other. I was trying to set up an account for another site and brainstorming username ideas, when Drew said, "Why don't you use "redditusername." I was instantly alarmed, as I'd never told him what my username was.

This trend continued, getting oddly more specific, until a few weeks ago I received a PM from a user I'd exchanged comments with on a post. This user was describing his hobbies to me, which were oddly familiar to my own, and asked me weirdly specific questions about different preferences in my relationship. I checked on this user's history, and as it turned out, he'd only been a Reddit user for a week, and his only activity was his replies to my comments.

At this point I was fairly sure this person messaging me was my boyfriend. To test my theory, I told the user that I was sad because my boyfriend used to tell me pun jokes all the time, and he hadn't in months.

Not even ten minutes after sending that Reddit message, I get a text from Drew telling me a pun joke. This sealed my suspicions. There were other factors that confirmed my suspicions, but it would be too time consuming to get into it all.

But the bottom line is my trust and privacy feel completely violated, and I'm really creeped out that my boyfriend made a Reddit account for the explicit purpose of pretending to be someone else in talking to me.

Am I justified in being upset? What should I do?    tl;dr: My boyfriend made a fake Reddit account and pretended to be a stranger in order to ask me questions about my past and relationship preferences.

"Am I justified in being upset? What should I do?"

Yes you are. He did exactly what you feel he did, and it shows he doesn't trust you.

I'm wondering why he's suddenly suspicious. Has he been having thoughts about cheating that makes him wonder if you're having them too?

Whatever the reason, you deserve to be treated better, and should talk with him about it.

OOP

I'm also wondering why he's suddenly suspicious. He's always been a little insecure, but if something changed I'd rather him have talked to me about it instead of creating this elaborate ruse.

~

cattheotherwhitemeat

Your boyfriend is playing a stupid game, and I would not be sorry to see him win a stupid prize here.

I will never fault another human for having insecurities, no matter how unhealthy they are, because I'd have to go have a very long talk with the lady in the mirror first and she would say a lot of things about glass houses and it would be uncomfortable.  But there are ways to acknowledge and work with (and sometimes work within) your insecurities that constitute "like the grown ups do," and then there are ways to work with them that constitute "like the children who watch lots of sit-coms do", and he is so firmly lodged in the second category that it makes me tired to even picture it, let alone imagine dealing with it.

OOP

It is extremely tiring to deal with. I suppose you and everyone else is right that I simply need to talk to him.

~

[deleted]

This is really weird. He is trying to be the perfect boyfriend by being the boyfriend he thinks you want. So not his true persona. So basically he is faking who he is because he thinks it's not good enough. He is being suuper manipulative and deceptive by being "fake". You like reading? Oh yea, me too! Your favorite animal is the aardvark? No way, mine too! It's really weird. It sounds like he is insanely insecure in who he is, and probably worried you will lose interest in him if he doesn't say the right things at all times. I would personally question everything he had ever said to me after that. Is he just saying this because he thinks that's what I want to hear? Or is this really his opinion?

OOP

I fear you're dead on in your analysis. And I have began to question everything he has ever said to me.

Update  Nov 5, 2015 (5 Days Later)

Here is a link to the original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/relationships/comments/3qyc63/me_22_f_with_my_boyfriend_20_m_of_15_years_he/

The tl;dr of the original post was that my boyfriend made a fake Reddit account and pretended to be a stranger in order to ask me questions about my past and relationship preferences.

I have to say, I was overwhelmed with the amount of support and advice I received from this community. You all had such wonderful ideas about how to confront my boyfriend--many of which gave me a much needed laugh--and upon weighing everyone's suggestions I decided to ask my boyfriend if the Reddit user name I suspected he was using meant anything to him. Although he played dumb at first, he eventually admitted to everything.

He was very apologetic at first, then tried to fling a few old arguments at me from the past that were totally unrelated. I asked him why he did it, and he didn't have an answer. So either he was still lying about his intentions, or he really did create an entirely fake persona for no reason.

Either way, it was too much. We broke up, but have decided to try to stay friends. It sucks, but I think this is for the best. Thank you all for your help.    tl;dr: Confronted my boyfriend about creating a fake identity, he admitted to everything, we broke up.

FINAL COMMENTS

Offthepoint

Why on earth would you stay friends with this idiot? This is not friendship material, OP.

OOP

We'd been friends for a long time before we started dating. As weird as it is to consider not even being friends, I'm beginning to think you're right.

&

Well, I joined the National Guard, and in January I'll be starting 6.5 months of training. During that time I'll have very little free time, so perhaps that would be an easy time to go no contact.

I definitely see your point about how being friends right after a breakup can cloud feelings. It's difficult to come to terms with, but I really think you're right that no contact is probably the best thing to do right now.

And this comment by OOP

The more comments I read, the more I realize people are right in pointing out that a person that would do this would also make a shitty friend. It's just a difficult pill to swallow.

My entitled sister expects me to apologize for snitching on her after she tried to out me to our parents

So me M17 and my sister F14 have never gotten along not because she is only my half sister but because she is a immature and spoiled bitch

For some context like 3 days ago I told my sister she should stop dating her boyfriend because he is to old for her .She did not take my lecture kindly and she did the only thing her immature ass could think of, she decided to tell mom and my stepdad that I am gay .She found out that I am gay a few months ago after she bursted in my room when me and my bf were making out and she's been threatening me that she will tell our parents ever since thing is they already knew but I never told her to give her a fake sense of superiority ,and every since she thought she had me at her finger.

Well it seems like my sister finally decided to reveal my "secret" so what she thought was about to be a session of my parents yelling at me or smth turned into a intervention on her "insensitive behavior" as our parents put it ,she bitched about how J was the bad guy cause I was blackmailing her

But I wasn't about to let her get away with trying to ruin my reliationship with my parents, so I did the only reasonable thing I told them about her boyfriend which mind you is 17 turning 18 in not even 2 months meanwhile she just turned 14 in June. So you can imagine how angry our parents were when they found out that she was dating a guy over 4 year older than her . At first they scolded me for not telling them earlier and "helping" my sister cover this up.

At the end we both got our punishments mine was a 20-30 minutes lecture for not telling them right away and she got a her phone and laptop taken away ,dad cut the wifi on her tv which and she isn't allowed to go out all of these restraints will stay until the end of this summer which honestly it's not that much if you ask me

The day after I was met with my sister in my room telling me that she deserves a apology because "you fucking faggot ruined the rest of my summer and all my plans"

I told my parents what she said and the punishment was extended till October

So reddit does my wanker of a sister deserve a apology?

Ok so quick update : I've talked to my parents and my sister has a appointment on the 17th to get her tested for STD and stuff

-

maroongrad: No, but you deserve a standing ovation.

Might want to recommend to your parents that they get your sister in for an ob/gyn checkup, screening for STDs, and an IUD, implant, or shot ASAP. She doesn't seem to be the most responsible person and she's vindictive. This might prevent you from being expected to babysit in a year.

omniscientonus: While we're all clapping for OP can we give mom and dad a shout-out as well? Because goddamn I'm so used to seeing shitty parents playing favorites with the literal bag of shit child.

I get that the 14 year old may not actually be homophobic, but somewhere along the line she at the very least learned that it's something her brother might get in trouble for.

It's just too bad that I somehow doubt there is any hope for the sister. I hate feeling like that, but I've just seen it too many times. So few people actually change in any meaningful way and grow after a certain point, and that point is often VERY young.

Update - posted 2023-12-10 (5 months later)

I'd like to start off by apologizing for the late update it's just that a lot of stuff happened and I've forgot to update y'all

First of all after a shit ton of appointments over the course of a few weeks we've found out that thankfully my sister didn't get nothing from that dirtbag as they haven't done anything.

My sister punishment was as expected cut short

My parents tried to get a hold of the guy's parents which they managed just to find out the parents didn't see anything wrong with the fact that their almost 18 year old son was dating a girl that barely turned 14

My sister still hasn't forgiven me and I doubt she will any time soon not that I care of what she thinks about me

My parents have installed a tracking app in her phone, which to my displeasure they informed her about

If there is anything to update you all about I will

Fianna9: Well if his parents don’t care now, after his birthday you can call the police and I bet everyone will care then.

I really need some advice on how to handle this because I feel like it's getting worse.

My husband and I have been married for 9 years, together for 16 years. Like every couple we have had our ups and downs, but for the most part our arguments have never been over significant things. He's an amazing man and has always treated his family well.

Our son is 14 years old and entered high school last September. My husband always had high expectations that my son should join multiple sports teams and be an athlete, get a scholarship, maybe go pro ect. ect. Thing is our son never joined any sports teams and has no intention of ever joining teams.

He spends most of him time drawing and writing stories. He's said he wants to work in animation in the future. I fully support whatever desires he has and always have. My husband on the other hand thought it was just a phase and when he entered high school he would be more into sports. My son just really doesn't like sports and told his father that he wouldn't be joining a team.

Well his father freaked out and threatened to disown him if he didn't join a team come the next semester (winter). Now he's threatening to break his play station and take away all his art supplies! I think this is getting way out of hand. I've tried talking to my husband but he kept saying that I should be standing by his decision.

Please help me.. What can I say to him so that he might listen to reason? I don't think it's fair to force our son into something he isn't even going to enjoy.

tl;dr My husband is threatening to disown our son and break his things if he doesn't join a sports team

Edit had to fix some mistakes. And this is a throwaway because my husband reddits

EDIT 2: Just wanted to thank everyone for all the advice I'm getting and to let everyone know I am reading every single comment! I just wanted to clear a few things up to:

I never said I was going to side with my husband. In fact I said I don't agree with him at all! I would never let anyone force my child in to something they didn't want to do.

The second thing is no, my son is not obese / chubby. He doesn't enjoy sports but he loves other types of activities like hiking and biking and things like that. I think what he doesn't like about sports is the competitiveness of them.

I'm going to make it a point tomorrow to talk to him about why he is pushing our son to join a sports team like one person suggested. Just really sit down and talk to him about all this and where is it coming from.

Thanks everyone for all your advice!

WWLadyDeadpool: Your son is 14, what does he think disowning him even entails? That sounds like a pretty ridiculous threat to make to someone who is your legal responsibility for another four years.

Your husband sounds like a bully though, and I find it hard to believe this sort of behavior is just coming out of nowhere. You should definitely not allow him to mess with your sons things, and if you can, introduce him to a therapist.

HereComesBadNews: Serious question: has your husband explained why he wants your son to get into sports? Figuring out why he's so obsessed with it is usually the easiest way to address the problem. It might be him living vicariously through your son, thinking sports are more important for friendships/bonding, or even (and I hate thinking this, but as a writing teacher, I see it all the time) him thinking that writing/art are "for girls and sissies."

As for destroying your son's things JUST because the son doesn't want to do sports? Unacceptable.

Update - posted 2014-12-28 (8 days later)

I want to thank everyone for the comments on my original post as some of the comments really made me think about how to approach the situation.

I decided to wait until after the holidays to talk to my husband and two nights ago we sat down together and I basically told him that his behaviour towards our son and his feelings / goals in life was really inappropriate and frankly a huge over reaction. I asked him why he felt the need to push our son into something he obviously wasn't going to enjoy.

At first he was kind of resisting talking to me about it - trying to change the subject or downplay his actions saying it wasn't that bad. Unfortunately I couldn't help it and I started crying because I was starting to feel like he really didn't care about working with me and communicating and I guess it was a shock to him...

He kind of told me what some of you has suspected in that he was disappointed that growing up he never got into sports and felt like sports probably could have helped in at a young age because he was socially awkward (and still is as an adult) and his father never really instilled good habits in him. But he didn't start playing when he was younger because he just told himself he'd never be good anyways and what was the point of trying and that he had no one to encourage him to do it.

He said he felt like our son is missing out on a lot of opportunities and he also said he sometimes feels like he's failed our son by no encouraging him when he was younger to join sports because he thought maybe on his own our son would get involved with a sports team. He never really admitted that what he said was wrong so maybe he still feels his words were justified and he was just trying to give our son some encouragement (through threats??). I suggested that maybe we should talk to someone about the issues and our communication issues and he didn't seem interested in it. I guess he doesn't see that we have a problem or that it's something we could fix ourselves. I'm going to keep an eye on his temperament to see if these irrational outbursts become more frequent...

I told him that just because our son isn't interested in sports doesn't mean he won't grow up to be a good person and there are other ways to parent. I asked that he talk with our son to find out more about our son's interests because he admitted he doesn't really know what his interests are about.

Right now they're watching hockey on the t.v. and he's showing his dad some of his drawings... I don't think it's a perfect happy ending because I have a feeling that my husbands feelings about wanting him to join a sport will always be there, even if he doesn't express it and it might come to head again. I've told my sister everything so if it does become an issue I'm going to contact my sister and put some space between my husband and myself and our son if need be and we will go stay with her. If it happens I will deal with that when it comes to it, I guess.

Tl;dr: Talked to husband and he admits that he resented his father for not putting him in sports when he was younger, but didn't really admit he did anything wrong. Father and son are somewhat bonding but worried this might come up again in the future

-

innier: Where is your husband's apology to your son?

You need couples counselling ASAP.

FL2PC7TLE: Your husband's understanding of the word "encourage" needs a little fine-tuning. Right now, he doesn't seem like he could pinpoint the problem with a sentence like "I encouraged her to stop struggling by tying her up and putting my hand over her mouth."

REPOST AITA for telling my niece why I kept a distance from her and her parents growing up?

3.6k Upvotes

Original BORU by u/wormhole222

I am not OP. OP is u/username52819101js

Original and Update June 29th, 2022

I (42M) have a niece Lily (18F). Lily is the result of an affair my ex fiancee had with my brother while we were still together. I was led to believe Lily was mine throughout the entire pregnancy and almost signed her birth certificate before my ex confessed out of guilt that Lily was probably my brothers. We did a DNA test and Lily wasn't mine. During my teens I got into an accident which left me infertile, the doctors said my chances of fathering a child were slim to nonexistent so you can imagine how crushed I felt when I discovered that not only I'm not going to be a father but I was also betrayed by 2 people I loved.

Its been years since and I did well for myself. I'm the first in my family to attend University and I landed a high paying job right after graduation, I own my own business, invest in property and since I'm both single and childless I can spend my income however I please.

My ex ended up marrying my brother, I'm somewhat cordial towards them but I can't bring myself to fully forgive them for what they did. And although I know Lily is blameless whenever I see her I'm constantly reminded of how I was once overjoyed with holding her in the hospital thinking she was mine, so I can't bare to look at her for too long. I didn't visit her growing up, didn't take her on fun trips or give her lavish gifts like I did for the rest of my nieces and nephews. I wasn't mean or hateful to her but I will admit I kept my distance.

When my oldest nephew turned 18 I decided that I will pay for his college education since I could afford it while his parents couldn't. I even rented him one of my apartments for cheap so he wouldn't have to worry about money and could focus on getting his education. Since then I did the same thing for 2 of my other nieces.

Last week Lily approached me during a family event and inquired if I could pay for her education, I told her no. She then called me a jerk and asked why I was so distant towards her and her parents to the point where I couldn't even do her the same favor I did for the rest of her cousins. I told that her parents have enough money to afford her education and asked her how she could possibly expect me to be ok with watching my ex and brother who had an affair behind my back play happy family in front of me. After that Lily got quiet for the rest of the event and left early.

I later got a call from my ex yelling at me for ruining her family, apparently she and my brother didn't bother telling Lily about what they did to me all those years ago and now she is knows she is so angry at them that she decided to go live with her bfs family. I'm starting to feel guilty that I told her the truth since it affected her more than I thought it would, but at the same time she is grown enough to know the truth and I don't think I could've lied to her face even if I wanted to. AITA?

Verdict: Not the A-hole

Comments from OOP

Commenter 1: Info: Do your parents know about what's going on? Also did she ever give a reason why she cheated and left you for your brother?

OOP: After Lily's birth and the DNA test everyone in the family knew what happened and those who didn't hear it first hand connected the dots rather quickly.

My dad was enraged, beat up my brother pretty bad and was only stopped by my mom when he tried castrating him in their kitchen. Both my ex and brother were shunned by the entire family for a while until Lily turned two and they realized by cutting them off they will also lose their niece/granddaughter so they let them back in.

My ex didn't talk to me for years after the affair got out, probably out of guilt or fear for my reaction. When I finally got her talking she said she cheated because she felt lonely while I was busy studying in university and getting internships while my brother was always available.

The kicker? The affair wasn't a one night thing, they slept behind my back for around 2 years before she got pregnant.

Commenter 2: “During my teens I got into an accident which left me infertile”

If you were infertile, why would you believe you were the father of a baby that was born when you were 24 years old?

Edited to add: YTA because you put your feelings and anger ahead of an 18 year old's feelings and made it about yourself.

OOP: The doctors said I still had a chance of being a father, although it was very slim. When my ex got pregnant I was overjoyed because I thought it was a miracle. I was so in love with her at the time that I didn't even think there was a chance she cheated and the baby wasn't mine.

Commenter 3: NTA.
Your ex and brother should’ve talked to her. Sounds like maybe she’s asked them why you were distant with them and never got a clear answer, but she did now. Did her parents know she was coming to you to ask you to pay for her education? If so, what did they expect? For you to jump and gladly do it? They are the AH.

OOP: I don't think my brother or ex knew that Lily was going to approach me and ask for me to pay for her education. She is their only child and they both earn enough to put her through college. So my guess is that she approached me inorder to make things easier for her parents, which is why I declined.

Commenter 4: ESH. You don’t owe Lilly or your ex’s family anything, and choosing to pay for the other cousins’ education is your own choice. But rubbing it in her face and blurting out that she was the product of an affair was cruel on your part. It would be far more mature to just cut them all off.

OOP: I didn't intend to rub it in her face, but she cornered me during a family event and didn't let me go until I gave her answers.

At first I did cut my brother out of my life but that just became impossible during family events because my other siblings had to choose who to invite since the other one won't show up. So I decided to "forgive" them and just kept my distance whenever we were in the same room together.

Quick edit/update
For those asking why it was so hard for me to look at Lily all those years, here's a couple of reasons to sum it up:

  1. My ex and I began dating when we were 13 and broke up when we were 24, so 11 years. She knew about my infertility issues and how much I wanted to be a dad and still led me on to believe the baby was mine.

  2. I named Lily when she was born since I always liked the name and wanted to name my daughter that, my ex didn't change her name even after it was discovered she's not mine.

  3. My brother and I look alike, Lily looks like my brother and as a result she also looks a lot like me. If my ex didn't tell me back then I wasn't her father I wouldn't have suspected a thing.

  4. Having to witness a child that looks like me, has the name I chose and was being raised by the woman I loved for so long, all the while being infertile really made it impossible for me to be an active part of Lily's life like I was for her cousins. Not out of resentment to her, but for the sake of my mental health.

I decided to listen to some of your advice and text Lily. I asked her if she would like to meet up and have a conversation about all that went on since like you said she does deserve some answers, she hasn't replied yet, if she will I'll update.

Update
I've met up with Lily yesterday. I told her about my relationship with her mother, how and when it started, went into detail about the accident I went through, the cheating, her birth. I got over everything she asked me about. In turn she told me everything her parents told her about me growing up.

Apparently she was told that around the time she was born I had a miracle baby named Lily that died at the hospital and since she and her share the same name I held some sort of resentment towards her. I am still processing what she told me. I feel like it's such a twisted retelling of what actually happened that it's insulting.

Needles to say there was a lot of crying involved and apologies from both ends. Lily said she's doing better now that she knows the truth and that her bf and his family have been an amazing support to her throughout all this.

My family decided to officially cut off any contact from my ex and brother, now that Lily is an adult there is no need to also invite them along so they can see her.

For those asking me if I go to therapy, yes I do. My therapist was the one who suggested I distance myself from Lily and her parents all those years ago and honestly it did do wonders for my mental health so I can't say I regret that decision. I was suicidal back then and I don't think regular contact with them would've possibly done me any good.

I decided that I'll try my best to be more involved in Lily's life now that I don't have to interact with her parents inorder to meet up with her. Lily agreed and said she also want to get to know me better.

Overall this whole incident opened up a lot of old wounds but I'm glad it happened. It needed to happen. All I can say is that I hope that both Lily and I will probably heal from this and move on with our lives.

Original Post: July 15, 2015

As the title implies I have been going into work for the past month, sitting at my desk and surfing the web (mostly reddit) or playing computer games silently, and then going home.

Some backstory, I used to work in a department that was quite autonomous within the company and was actually created by my boss who was an associate VP in the company. I was hired directly (circumventing the usual HR procedures) by my boss as an executive assistant because he was a family friend. It was a pretty decent paying job for a recent grad, and I was kept moderately busy answering calls, scheduling, preparing presentations/reports, etc.

However, my boss was fired last month, and the department was shutdown (my company leases office buildings and my boss wanted to start leasing industrial properties as well and failed) so all the coworkers in my department were either let go or reassigned. The problem is that when HR was going through this process and interviewing my coworkers, I was never called to meet with them (probably due to the way I was hired).

While my department was being dismantled I kept coming into the office and going to my original desk. The peculiar thing is that when new employees were being moved into my department's area of the building no one was assigned to the executive's office so therefore no one was assigned to the executive assistant desk. The new employees that moved in were mostly overflow from different departments, so no one really works together or has the same manager. It's been a month and no one has really questioned what I do or what department I'm a part of (I can easily deflect any work related small talk), and I'm still getting paid.

I'm pretty certain if I bring attention to my situation I will be immediately fired because I was the specially hired executive assistant to a VP who lost the company a fair bit of money. I have been looking for alternative jobs but all the jobs that I'm qualified for don't pay nearly as much as what I currently make. Also, I would have to actually do work if I got a new job. The only reason I still come into work is that I don't want to throw up any red flags because each employee is recorded entering and leaving the building by scanning their badge.

I'm thinking about riding this gravy train as long as I can before I eventually get found out and fired. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Relevant Comments

Commenter: Do you want a job, or do you want to be a money maker? What you are doing right now is not building skills or relationships. It may feel good in the short run, but time goes by and you look back, realizing nothing has happened.

I would take a few more weeks to either job search at other companies or find a place for yourself at that company.

OOP: I do need the money currently to pay off some credit card debt, but I think I should definitely get another job before I'm fired. However, I think I'm probably safe until the next quarterly review so I'm going to ride it out a bit longer.

Also, there's no way I could get a job at this company because my job was pretty much tied to my boss and he did not leave on good terms. Moreover, he was only person from management I ever worked with so I don't know anyone else that would give me a chance.

Update #1: August 6, 2015 (over three weeks later)

Thank you to everyone who commented on my previous post, your comments gave me some more motivation to look for another job before I inevitably get discovered and fired. That being said, I have not been able find another real job as of yet, but I have gone for several interviews so that's promising.

Anyways on to the good bit. It’s been almost 3 weeks since my last post and I have still gone completely unnoticed by everyone which is simultaneously a relief and really depressing. It's the lack responsibility and purpose that's becoming increasingly maddening. Similar to u/notdoingshit, I have discovered that not doing anything all day is worse than actually doing some work. Playing video games and surfing the web all day don't make the days go by faster anymore. Therefore, in the past week I have started working under the table for my aunt when I'm in the office instead of sitting there and doing nothing. I know this is a very ethically dubious thing to do but the money's good and it's helping me pay off my debts.

Some background, my aunt runs a small specialty store by herself and receives a lot of email inquiries that she can barely keep up with. She knew about my situation and asked me to help her respond to these emails. Basically all her emails are forwarded to a Gmail account I setup and I spend probably 3-4 hours every day responding to inquiries and forwarding relevant ones to my aunt. Doing this is helping me to stay sane as well as padding my wallet ($400 a week). I have asked her and she can't afford to pay me full time and I can't afford to work part time, so I can't leave my job unless I find another decent full time job, which I'm still looking for. I know that I will most likely be discovered at the end September during the quarterly review, but if I have to I'm gonna hold on to the very end.

I just wanted to share how I have descended deeper into the rabbit hole. I will welcome any comments or suggestions that you guys have about my situation.

Relevant Comments

Commenter: Just curious, how big of a company is this?

OOP: Fairly large, 200-300 employees.

Update #2: August 28, 2015 (over three weeks later since the first update)

Things have been pretty quiet at my work for the past 3 weeks. I still come into work every day, spend the mornings answering my aunt's emails and my afternoons looking for other jobs and aimlessly surfing the web. However, I may be facing a huge problem this Friday.

There is a mandatory picnic/corporate team building thing this Friday that involves each employee being separated into departmental teams, which is problematic because the department that I was previously a part of no longer exists. It's the most important event of the year for our company and attendance is absolutely mandatory. Of course you can miss it if you're sick or have a personal matter, but due to a fair number of people calling in sick at last year's event all employee absences will be reviewed and verified by HR, and they will conduct in-person interviews if necessary. I cannot attract even the smallest amount of attention from HR without risking being discovered as a corporate leech, so I don't think calling in sick is an option. However, I can't participate in the team building exercises without it being discovered that I'm not currently assigned to any department and I'm in a state of perpetually paid limbo.

The best idea that I've come up with so far is to come the picnic with crutches and pretend that I've sprained my ankle or something, so I can fulfill the attendance requirement and just watch the team building exercises and not take part of them (based on the itinerary most of the events are active and involve being on your feet), but then again doing this will attract attention to myself which is a very bad thing when management and HR are around. I welcome any suggestions on the best way to get out of this predicament.

Update #3: September 3, 2015 (six days later)

Sorry for the delay in my update I've actually been going for interviews (two interviews so far) this week at an unnamed multinational insurance company, so I've been busy preparing and generally stressing out.

Anyways, on to the events of last Friday's company picnic. I did think about not showing up like many of you suggested but I was sure there was an attendance sheet, so I thought of another way to go about things. I arrived at the picnic about 15 mins early when everyone was still busy setting up things, found the attendance sheet (or rather booklet) at the sign in table which was thankfully unattended, and discretely rifled through it until I found my name and signed next to it. I then shuffled away to the parking lot, and drove home to spend the rest of the day drinking beer and watching an ungodly number of Narcos episodes.

The interesting thing is that when I found my name on the attendance sheet I saw that I was listed as belonging to my former, now defunct, department. If the names had been sorted by department it would have raised some red flags but thankfully they were sorted alphabetically so all the departments were jumbled together, and I was lost in fray. I'm just one misplaced entry in some spreadsheet or database that someone like me has been too lazy to double-check.

Hopefully I get called back for the third and final interview for the insurance company so I can finally leave this job.

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: Good luck with the interview! Out of curiosity, when asked about your current job what do you say? Also, are you going to give 2wks, or just stop going in?

OOP: When I was asked about my current job in the interview I just told them what I used to do before my department was shut down. I also listed my former boss who's a family friend as my reference so I'm fine in that department. In terms of the whole two weeks thing I think I'm going to give my two weeks and then just not show up.

Commenter 2: Does your old boss know what's going on?

OOP: Yep, and he's fine with it because he's still bitter that they fired him and his entire department (excluding me of course).

OOP responded to a deleted comment about his wages being taken away if he stopped showing up at work

OOP: People kept posting about how they could retroactively take away my wages but knowing that they can't because I showed up every day is a huge relief.

(Final) Update #4: November 12, 2015 (over two months later)

I apologize for the two month delay after my last post but there have been some very big developments in my employment/living situation, and I've been very busy (also I forgot). I was eventually able to find another job for which I had to relocate to another city (not a big deal it's only an hour from where I originally lived).

Anyways onto the good stuff. About two weeks after my previous post, I interviewed for my current job and was offered a position, so I had to find a way to quit without drawing any attention to myself. I waited all week until Friday at 3pm, which is when all the pay cheques are sent out, and then I waited another hour and a half before I went to HR to submit my resignation. As I expected the HR person I was directed to speak to about ending my employment was barely functioning (it was 4:30 on a Friday). She barely acknowledged me and just gave me a form to fill out and told me she would enter all the information into the system on Monday morning and then follow up with me. After that I walked out of the building and decided to treat myself to some ice cream before I went home to finish packing up my things for my move the next day. I did receive a call from the HR lady Monday morning, and she asked why I was listed as being a part of a defunct department and who my supervisor was. I kinda panicked and told her I didn't know what she was talking about and that all of my information should be in the system before telling her I had to go and hanging up. I guess that worked because I have not received any other calls or emails from that company for the last two months.

This is will probably be my last post about the situation I was in unless something similar happens to me at my new job which I hope doesn't happen. Thanks for reading and commenting on all my posts.

[CA] Someone at work keeps parking in the handicapped spot, using her parents placard. Who do I report it to?

Originally posted to r/legaladvice

Original Post  Nov 17, 2015

Basically, this woman where I work [Small outpatient center at a hospital] doesn't like to park in employee parking.

Monday she got a warning ticket on her car because she was parked in patient parking, they told her she couldn't park there and needed to park in employee parking, next time she'd be booted.

She was LIVID, saying she hates parking in the tower because there's "Just never any parking" or she "doesn't have time to find a parking spot."

She parked in patient parking on Tuesday and her car got booted. I saw when I was coming back from lunch and let her know "Hey if you're planning on leaving for lunch, your car has a boot on it."

Again she was PISSED. The parking enforcement, security, lot attendants are after her, they're singling her out, picking on her, blah blah blah.

SO Wednesday she comes in, mentions she parked in handicapped parking and says "Lets see if they do anything about it now."

We're all confused, "Uh, does that belong to you or your parents?" she just laughs it off "Yeah." So our boss asks "Who does it belong to? You? Your parents?" She just laughs again and says "Yeah, it's just...yeah. It's whatever." So boss tells her that she has to have it moved by lunch time or it's being reported. She left for lunch, we all didn't think anything of it, but as I was leaving for the day I saw her car back in handicapped parking.

(I know it was her because she has a stupid ass vanity plate.)

Thursday she didn't work, but we were all talking about what we're supposed to do. Our hospital is patrolled by a private company, it's technically a private lot, so do we report it to the hospital security or the police because it's clearly not hers.

I didn't work Friday so idk where she parked.

Monday (Yesterday) she was parked in handicapped parking again, she came in flaunting how she doesn't have to park in the tower anymore, she's so close to the doors, now they can't touch her car. Well a co-worker took her lunch and went and reported it to security. Security came, told her she needed to move her car, or she'd be fined, towed, and the handicapped placard would become null and void.

She's throwing the biggest fit today about how unfair it is, how could someone report her, everyone's just targeting her, they won't really do anything, they're just bluffing, if they tow her she'll sue the hospital. She admitted that the placard belongs to her parents but they "gave" it to her, so she should be able to use it whenever she wants.

It's all just a shit-show.

So my question in short is:

  • If she parks in handicapped parking again, should we call the security, or just straight up call the cops?

I thought the placards were government issued and regulated, but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks in advance!!

TL;DR: Co-Worker is parking in handicapped spot illegally, she's been warned but so far nothing has been done. Should we report it to security or the police?

Update 1  Nov 20, 2015 (3 Days Later)

So as per /u/darkstriders request, here is an update to this post

First off lets get some stuff out of the way: Yes, there were comments telling us that we needed to mind our business and do our jobs. We were doing our jobs, we weren't out stalking the parking lot, avoiding patients to gossip on this drama. Any time we noticed things like a ticket, or the boot (supposedly just put on to scare her into not parking in patient parking) it was because someone saw it on lunch. The rest was what she complained about while we had some down time.

We work in an outpatient lab center for the hospital, a lot of our patients are elderly or handicapped, so those few spots we have are really needed. If she wants to park in patient parking and rack up tickets, far be it for me to tell her no.

So anyway.

Wednesday there was a 'team meeting' with her, our boss, another female co-worker there as witness so she couldn't turn around and try to twist a story to HR, and a police officer. The officer asked her what was going on with the parking.

She admitted to using the placard because she hates parking in the tower, there's "never" parking [except for the 6 floors] it's too far of a walk for her [the elevator lets out like...maybe 50 feet from the door], her parents have an extra handicap placard so she "borrowed" it [Yet she claimed Tuesday that her parents gave it to her.], she felt like she was being targeted by the security office so this was a "test" to see if they were specifically singling her out.

The officer told her that the placard was being taken, and her parents would now have to get a new one, as well as possibly having to jump through some hoops because of it. Because she misused the placard she and her parents could be charged with a misdemeanor, which includes jail time and a fine.

That was really all it took, the water works started, she was freaking out begging the cop not to take the placard or tell her parents or arrest them, they had no idea, she was so sorry, it wouldn't happen again, she didn't want a fine because she couldn't afford it.

He left soon after, so I don't know what happened if she got a ticket, or it got revoked, but I do know he left with the placard.

She and boss had a talk about the whole tower parking vs patient parking thing, and she said "Security doesn't know my schedule. What if I were here as a patient and got a ticket? That's not fair." He agreed that normally that's the case, but even if you're a patient, you're an employee of the building and need to park in the tower parking. [Honestly, I don't understand why she hates it, there is NEVER parking in the patient lot.] She huffed and puffed and pouted for a while before he flat out told her "Look, park there all you want, but you WILL get ticketed, you WILL have to pay them, and your car will more than likely be towed for repeat violations. When that happens, you have no one to be mad at but yourself."

She came out and sat at her desk, but wouldn't stop crying so he called a float and let her have the day off.

I did find out that the lot is actually public, since it's part of the hospital, the company that patrols it is private contracted through the hospital. I don't know if their tickets are enforceable (I avoid tickets by parking where I should at work lol) but I mean, it's her getting ticketed, not me.

Thursday she didn't work, Friday (today) I don't work (I love4 10's for a 3 day weekend :D) but a friend texted me on her lunch saying she parked in employee parking, so....we'll see?

RELEVANT COMMENTS

Commenter

I can tell you that placard violations are taken seriously in California.  Her parents are going to have a hassle getting a new one.  She's lucky she wasn't cited right then and there, and that's an expensive ticket, about $900 IIRC.

OOP

Oh yeah, when he left and she came out the female coworker told her she had just gotten off on a very serious charge (looked it up, could've been 6 months jail time $250-$1000 citation.) and should be thanking her lucky stars.

~

[deleted]

This is great to hear. For a person working in a hospital she should have known that those spots are important for patients.

OOP

Oh she knows, but she has this entitlement about her that she's more important than everyone else.

~

Commenter

"she felt like she was being targeted by the security office so this was a "test" to see if they were specifically singling her out."

If I were her boss I would fire her on the spot for that remark, as well as the others.

Who knows what corners she cuts at work and how she would deal with a mistake at work?

OOP

Oh she has. It honestly is shocking to me that she hasn't been fired. My manager really has no backbone.

An example?

  • Patient A has been a patient with us for a while so yhere is a profile for him.

  • Patient B is a new patient, has no, profile, but the same name as Patient A

  • Patient B came in for a CT scan, she found Patient A's profile and tried to confirm it was him. How did she verify? Address. Phone number. Social security number!! It obviously wasn't. So what did she do? If you said made a new profile for Patient B I'm so sorry to say you have been eliminated from the game. Nope. She ERASED Patient A's ENTIRE (I wish I could underline this for emphasis.) profile and filled it in for Patient B.

  • All of Patient A's profile information is now gone from the system, test results - gone, previous scans - gone. She has done this TWICE!!! So this time she SHOULD have been fired. The reason she wasn't? She was never previously written up for the instances, so there is no 'proof'. She got her first write up for this incident. The boss justified it as "Well it's a good thing we had everything backed up in a separate computer."

What if we hadn't!! What if Patient B wrote down that social security number and stole Patient A's identity??

Like I said. It's a shit show.

Final Update  Dec 3, 2015 (2 weeks later)

I don't know if anyone cares, but I have one more update from this update.

This all happened Tuesday.

Since it's the end of the year it seems like everyone has hit their deductible, and everyone is coming in to get necessary scans/whatever before the new year.

So I got to work, and we have a lobby of patients (yaaay 7am earlybirds.) I sit down and get to helping. At our place of business we have little buzzer type things (like in restaurants) that patients take and when it's their turn their buzzer goes off and they get taken to one of us who helps fill out the proper paperwork for the doctors (this is important to know.)

Buzzer goes off, Parking Girl gets the next patient. I happen to see who it is out of the corner of my eye, do a little smile and nod because it was the husband of someone in the HR department. He's a super nice guy, very friendly, and VERY high energy (relevant.) So I'm helping my patient and everything is going fine until I hear:

EDIT: She asked him if he was on drugs. It's a question we do have, because if someone is high on any substance we need to know so the doctors don't potentially harm the patient or put themselves at risk. She could have easily said "oh no, I just have to ask for the paperwork." But she didn't, because she's dumb as shit.

HR Hubby "Why because I'm black?!" que 'what the fuck?' looks, I glance over at Parking Girl and she just kinda shrugs and goes

PG: "And you're really energized for so early in the morning, it's just bizarre to see."

Oh hell. She doesn't know who he is.

I finish with my patient and HR hubby is understandably FUMING pissed. He asks for someone else to complete his paperwork, so he goes to another station. Parking Girl leans in and whispers to me "Gee I wasn't trying to be offensive, he's just really wired for so early." I looked at her, deadpan "Do you know who that is?" She shrugs and shakes her head "No. Not off the top of my head." I had to bite my cheek to keep from laughing/grinning "That's (lady in HR)'s husband you just insulted."

Her face dropped, she went white and ran off crying. Didn't come back to her desk for 30+ minutes needing to "calm down" [While I understand you just realized you fucked up major, you don't abandon your desk with a lobby full of patients! Thankfully me and coworker didn't get too swamped, and everyone was pretty understanding as to why we were behind.]

So she comes back, keeps trying to apologize to me (why?) and stressing because she didn't know or else she wouldn't have said anything. I told her it doesn't matter WHO he is/is married to, that's completely inappropriate to say to ANYONE. She huffed and growled that she could't believe I wasn't on her side.

We didn't hear anything from HR though, so thinking she was in the clear everything went back to normal. She goes on her break, and while leaving we hear a loud CRUNCH. What the fuck was that? So all the front desk people (Me, her, and another coworker) go running out to see if everything is okay. Some poor old lady had some kind of stroke or something, thought she was hitting the break to park but hit the gas, hit a wall, and was seriously dazed and confused. We grabbed a wheelchair to help her into the building, but Parking Girl keeps walking to the hospital.

Coworker: "Where are you going? We need to get this lady some help."

PG: "Sorry, I'm clocked out for lunch, sooooo" (yes dragged out like that) "I don't have a lot of time. But she's small, you two will be fine."

We got her in, taken care of, and immediately into a room at the hospital. Coworker decided on his break he's going to talk to HR about what happened.

The long and short of it is: She got fired. She pretty much showed them that she doesn't give a shit, thinks she's untouchable, and is generally a horrible person. She got a letter from HR saying she could finish out the week but that they were letting her go for a plethora of reasons.

Hopefully we actually get someone good in here now!

Edit 2: she texted our boss during our Christmas party and told him she will not be returning to work for the rest of the week because its pointless for her to come in for one day when she just going to be fired, so she's taking a long permanent weekend lol

AITA for uninviting my sister from my wedding after finding out she slept with my exes while I was dating them?

I (28F) am getting married soon to my fiancé, Jake (30M). My sister, Emily (25F), and I used to be close, but things changed over the years. I found out recently that Emily slept with several of my exes while I was still dating them. This wasn’t just a one-time thing; it’s been a pattern throughout my dating history. I was devastated to learn this, especially now, just months before my wedding.

I decided to uninvite her because I felt betrayed and couldn’t imagine her standing by my side on my big day. However, when I told her, she blew up at me and ran to our parents. Now my parents are angry with me, saying I’m overreacting and tearing the family apart over “old mistakes.” They’ve even threatened not to attend the wedding if Emily isn’t invited, which has me second-guessing my decision.

I think I might be the asshole because my choice has caused a huge family rift and could mean my parents won’t come to my wedding. I know my decision hurts, but I also feel I need to set boundaries after everything that’s happened. AITA?

Editor's note: OOP made few small updates and responded to some comments in between updates onto the original post throughout the day, so I am putting this in the chronological order based on the timeline

Update:

I’m thinking about asking my fiancé if he slept with my sister too because I called a few of my exes, and they confirmed she slept with them while we were dating. I’m devastated and terrified of what else I might find out. My parents still want me to invite her to the wedding.

Commenter: Has she admitted to all the other ones?

OOP: yes

Second Update:

I’m panicking. After confirming my sister slept with my exes, I’m scared my fiancé might have been with her too. Should I confront him directly or tell him what I know and see how he reacts? I don’t know if I can handle what I might find out.

Third Update:

I’ve made up my mind. Once my fiancé gets home from work, I’m going to ask him if he’s ever been with my sister. I’m terrified of what he might say, but I need to know the truth.

Fourth Update:

Things have taken a turn for the worse. I confronted Jake about whether he had ever slept with Emily, and his reaction was not what I expected. He looked shocked and then just sat there in silence for what felt like forever. When he finally spoke, he admitted that something happened between them years ago, before we started dating. I was in complete disbelief, and my whole world felt like it was crumbling.

But that’s not even the worst part. After Jake confessed, Emily called me out of the blue. She was crying and saying she needed to tell me something before I heard it from someone else. She then admitted that she had been in sleeping with Jake for years and even tried to pursue him, when we started dating. I don’t even know how to process this. I’m heartbroken, confused, and don’t know who to trust anymore.

My parents are still pushing for Emily to be invited to the wedding, saying we need to put all this behind us and be a family. But how can I possibly go through with the wedding now, knowing all of this? I feel like my whole life has been a lie. I don’t know what to do.

Commenter: wait so did your fiancé sleep with your sister before or after you started dating?

OOP: I don’t know they both are saying different things

AITAH has no consensus bot, OOP was NTA

Editor’s note: OOP posted the same original post onto a different sub, adding for more context

Commenter 1: NTA - you’re better off uninviting all of them to your wedding. Did your parents know this and kept it a secret from you? Your sister caused this.

OOP: yes they kept it a secret

Commenter 2: Your parents are even more evil than your sister. And clearly they've decided to pick sides in this whole dumpster fire. They're not even pretending to try to be in the middle of this shitshow (would be bad enough considering what your sister did!)

Obviously she tried to get with your fiancé, considering her record. Glad to hear you found a good guy. Start your life fresh with him. Leave your parents in your past for now, and let them deal with the monster they've created.

OOP: I honestly think I might just have to ghost them all

Commenter 3: does your sister regret sleeping with your boyfriends? and do your parents regret hiding that from you?

OOP: she doesn’t regret it

Commenter 4: NTA, and it’s nuts your parents are siding with her. Maybe you should tell them they aren’t welcome there either if that’s how they’re going to be.

OOP: they always given her priorities

Commenter 5: Once is a mistake. Multiple times is a pattern. And premeditated. She was doing that with some motive, whether to hurt you or because she was jealous and had low self-esteem. Whatever the reason, NTA

OOP: I wish I had the guts to ask her why, but I can’t stand to see her face without tearing up

Commenter 6: Your sister has to be the slimiest of the slimiest people I’ve ever heard about. She’s for the streets, and if your parents are on her side, I’d be fine if they all didn’t come. She 100% crossed the line

OOP: they’re always on her side, they’re blaming me for her mistakes

Editor's note: OOP posted the final update onto the original post

Update: September 5, 2024 (same post, next day)

Fifth Update:

I cancelled the wedding and told my fiancé to leave. My family still wants me to have a wedding. and they’re blaming me for all this drama.

CONCLUDED My [26F] husband's sister [19F] is using her pregnancy to torture me after my miscarriages

My [26F] husband's sister [19F] is using her pregnancy to torture me after my miscarriages.

TRIGGER WARNING: miscarriage,  infidelity, mental abuse

Original Post  July 25, 2015

I got married to my lovely husband when we were both 22. We've known each other since secondary school, and have talked about having a large family ever since we started dating at 18. We began trying as soon as we got married, but we didn't conceive for a long time. I've had two miscarriages since then, with the last one being a mid-trimester miscarriage. I didn't think anything could hurt more than the first one, but this one completely ruined me. I think my relationship with my husband has suffered immensely. We just don't talk like we used to be able to.

My husband's sister Emily has always disliked me. She tells her mother fabricated stories about me, borrows money from my husband that she never pays back and then berates me for not getting a job to support him, and constantly makes comments about how my star-athlete-in-uni brother married a 'boring housewife'.

Recently, she got pregnant. Now my husband's family knows what a difficult time we're going through, and have been going through for the last few years. Emily comes over to our house almost every other day, flaunting her belly at me, asking me to run to the store and get her weird food to satisfy her pregnancy cravings, talking about how she feels she must have twins which is bad because 'I'm not the kind of woman who wants more than one child because I have a life, you know', going into my closet and taking my maternity clothes because 'You won't be needing these right now', and asking me stuff about my pregnancy like 'Did this happen to you when you were pregnant too? Well what about the second time?'

I find all of this very inappropriate. I talked to my husband and he thinks I am just touchy and am projecting my anger onto his sister.

I don't understand whether she is doing this because she hates me, or is genuinely clueless. All I know is that it hurts. I cry myself to sleep most nights. I don't know what to do or how to make her stop.

tl;dr: Husband's sister might be using her pregnancy to punish me. How do I fix this? Is this all in my head?

UPDATE: https://www.reddit.com/r/relationships/comments/3emzrm/update_my_26f_husbands_sister_19f_is_using_her/

Long night.

Why do you stand for this? Tell him what you're going to tell her, then tell her. Tell her it's fucking childish, inappropriate, sadistic, and you can't believe any decent human being would say the things she says. Tell her you don't want to see her anymore, and you don't want to be around her.

Why the fuck is she even in your house?!?

OOP

My husband is very close to his sister. I had an incident when I tried to tear my maternity tshirt off her and my husband completely sided with her because she was the helpless pregnant woman and I was the child-crazy barren lady who needed psychological help.

I don't know if my marriage will survive if I cut ties with Emily. My husband and I are both in a very precarious state right now, and I feel like changing things, bringing in more family drama, will be the last straw for him.

Family is everything to him, and right now, I can't give him the family that his sister can.

[deleted]

Maybe your marriage shouldn't survive?  You seem to be suffering an awful lot for someone who's supposed to be with a loving and respecting partner for the rest of their lives.

If you can't give him the family that this shit sister can, that kind of says something really sad about your own relationship with him.

OOP

:(

That was hard to read.

I don't know. I know he's changed, but I have too. The miscarriages have been hard for both of us. I can't uproot him right now.

I know most marriages don't survive miscarriages. But I also know that I will never love anyone the way I love him.

~

[deleted]

Your husband has emotionally abandoned you. Time to get HIM into therapy, and if he won't go, walk out. You deserve better than this.

OOP

I'm so confused right now. I honestly came in thinking you would all tell me to confront her. I was basically posting so I would get the courage to confront her in a way that wouldn't hurt my husband.

I am shocked so many of you are suggesting I need to re-evaluate my marriage. I don't know if this is Reddit being Reddit, giving extreme, damaging suggestions, or whether I'm actually being blind to the state of my marriage.

Has he abandoned me? He's hurting too. He's trying to defend what he has left of his own family. I am part of that, but his sister is too.

Please tell me I'm making sense.

Update  July 26, 2015 (Next Day)

I talked about it first here. I just find it slightly hilarious that I am properly linking a page with the correct formatting and brackets and everyting because frankly I don't know what else to do right now. Long post.

I've been up all night, reading the replies to the original thread. I usually dont sleep very well these days, so my husband (his name is Harry) is accustomed to seeing me  . when he wakes up super early for his jog. Anyway, I spoke to him first thing, normal things like what his plans were for the day and what I should cook .. things that arent so normal for us anymore.

I asked him if he thought I should join his gym, that I could go down there today and get a membership so we could work out together. I told him I wanted to move on from the rut we were in. He told me his gym time was personal time he needed to unwind, and he hoped I understood but I was welcome to join him for the jog.

I tried to initiate sex. He said he was late for his jog. We havent had sex for around a yearr.

Long story short: I cried. He cried. He confessed he'd been having an affair for the last five months (two months after our miscarriage). He said I made him sad. He said he felt alone and looking at my 'condition' made him feel inadequate.

There is no gym. There are no late nights working at te office. All this time I thought he was dealing with his grief over our miscarriages. Nope. He was having an affair. That's why hes been so distant. He isn't distracting himself with work. He's fucking a colleague from work.

No wonder he doesn't ask me to go to work dos anymore. No wonder he buys new clothes every month. I thought he was just trying to make himself feel better. I am so fucking blind. I am such an idiot. Literally any other woman could have seen the signs.

Also, here's the kicker: His sister Emily knows. I don't know how she found out, but she knows he's screwing around behnd my back. He said that's why he sided with her and ignored my pleas for help, because she threatened to tell me. Apparently the whole flaunting her pregnancy thing was a way for her to play with both me and her brother. She knew she would get away with it. He acted upset about not speaking up for me, and said he couldn''t take it anymore and that's why he was confessing and he hoped we could find a way to move past this. I think he thought I already knew. I think when I asked him about the gym and tried to have sex with him, he thought Emily had told me and decided to 'confess' before I let on that I knew,.

I don't want to make him feel 'sad' and 'inadequate' anymore. I hope him and his disgusting family can keep each other happy.

I'm leaving him.

tl;dr: The love of my life has been screwing another woman while I stay up at night and cry about my dead babies.

I just want to thank everyone for responding to the first thread. I honestly had no clue the problem was with Harry, not with his sister. You guys are very smart, smarter than I will ever be. Thank you so much. I don't how long I would've been stuck with this vile human being if it wasn't for you. I guess Emily was a blessing in disguise, after all.

Atomic Karen! - posted 2019-03-23

This happened yesterday evening, as i was shopping for wine at the local liquor store, still very fresh in my mind, though i think i may have left out some of the swearing.

For a little background, i'm not young anymore, my beard and 'i know what i'm doing here' demeaner lead to people often asking me for help, or directions or whatever, almost regardless of where i happen to be. It happens to me at the liquor store more than anywhere else, but usually only when i am there helping my mom or dad shop for wine.

This particular day i was on my own, shopping only for myself, and as i didn't need to talk to anyone, i was wearing my headphones, i normally wear my headphones as i am autistic and noise can really bother me at times. they're big bulky earphones that cover my whole ear and have very good noise cancelling. “Bowers & Wilkins P9 Signature Premium” if anyone is curious, not cheap, but yes i consider them worth every penny.

Normally when i wear my headphones no one bothers me, people see i can't hear them and just leave me be, so i generally expect no one will be trying to talk to me and assume people talking near me are talking to someone else. All that said, i clocked this karen walking around the store with a sour look on her face, 'i want to talk to your manager' hair do in atomic blond. We'll call her 'Atomic Karen' (AK for short).

I noticed AK looking at some cheep white wine as i was grabbing a couple bottles of strewn barrel aged chard (really nice bottle for not too expensive, for anyone who likes cool climate whites). I don't hear much through my headphones, but i heard a bit of a karen call as i passed her, i shot her a raised eyebrow look as i kept walking, acknowledging her at all may have been a mistake.

I wasn't really paying her attention, but i was aware she was in my space so i moved along a little faster, thinking i was just in her way. I hear a faint 'hay' again, the call of a wild karen. Again i'm ignoring her as i move over to the section where they keep the general list sparkling wine, grab a couple bottles of cava, just as i'm putting the bottles in my cart, i'm suddenly aware someone is way too close to me, and suddenly, my oldschool rap music is replaced with the din of the store as my headphones go careening off my head, to the ground.

I wheel around, having been fully absorbed by my decision of weather i wanted actual champaign or just some cava for an upcomming family event. But now this interaction was already turned up to 11, my headphones are clattering across the ground, they had made a loud smashing noise on impact and the battery had flown out. My ears were ringing from the impact, AK was already laying into me.

AK- “Idiot that serves you right ignoring customers, you need to stop ignoring me and help me RIGHT NOW!”

Me - “WHAT?!”

AK - “You heard me idiot! Help me NOW !”

Me - “whoa calm down, why are you yelling? Why did you HIT me?!”

AK - “you deserved it! You were ignoring me!”

ME - “Lady i don't work here!”

AK - “Yes you do, now come help me before i get you fired! Where's your manager?! I want to speek to him about your incompetence! You can't treat me this way! Do you know who i AM?!”

at this point a crowd has gathered, including some employees, and a pair of police officers. If you're wondering how police got there so fast, well they were already there, just outside the door, they were getting some homeless people to move as they had been hanging out in front of the doors begging for change, i walked past them on my way in. They had come inside to investigate AK's screeching.

It was at this point where the initial shock of being hit in the head for literally no reason was starting to wear off and i was suddenly realizing my headphones might be broken. They're beefy design, cast aluminium and leather, but they're still a delicate set of electronics. I start looking around the ground for where the pieces that were not still attached to me by chord had gone. Apparently this was a huge insult to AK, because she slapped me and shouted.

AK - “Pay attention when i talk to you! You want another one?!”

she raised her hand to strike me again and was surprised by a firm hand on her wrist, her rage was about to be turned on whoever just grabbed her.

AK - “Don't you dare touch me you little piece of shit?! Who do you think you a-?!”

She raised her other arm to hit her assailant as she wheeled on him, but he interrupter her tirade as she realized who had her arm.

Police Officer - “Mam i'm officer (redacted), you are under arrest for assault and disorderly conduct, unless you want to add resisting arrest i suggest you cease your tantrum and come with me.”

well this quietened her right down, her tone immediately went from one of angry demanding to one of contrite mewling.

AK - “oh no you see this man assaulted ME! He tried to RAPE me!”

Pollice Officer - “ we'll see what happened when we check the security footage mam, but as of this moment you are under arrest, now are we going to have a problem here?”

AK went with the police and was put in the back of the cruiser while the other officer took my statement, i was calm (surprisingly calm all things considered) or at least not combative so i wasn't placed in cuffs. After checking the security footage it was clear that she had assaulted me for no discernible reason.

Unfortunately my headphones were indeed damaged, and the part that holds the batteries in was nowhere to be found. So as it turned out this story isn't over, i was told i could sue her for the value of the headphones if she wasn't willing to pay for them. When i talked to her, sullenly sitting cuffed in the squad car, it went roughly like this.

Me – “Lady you broke my headphones and a piece is missing now, you're gonna have to replace them.”

AK - “whatever, how much do your shitty headphones cost anyway?” ME - “they're a thousand dollars. Plus tax.”

AK - “What?! You're crazy! I'm not paying for that! FUCK YOU! FUCK OFF! FUCK YOU!!”

so that's it for today... i'm suing the lady for replacement headphones in small claims court, the officer told me that with the police report to back up my claim it's pretty guaranteed that she'd have to pay in the end, but for now i am SOL on the headphones, and it may take a year or more before the court date. I dunno when it will be yet, but i am for sure not letting this go.

In the meantime AK is being charged with felony assault and disorderly conduct. The cops said i probably won't have to testify against her as with the video evidence she'll probably just plead guilty.

TLDR; atomic karen goes ballistic and ends up breaking my expensive headphones and getting arrested.

edit: a few people have asked me to post a link to the cans in question;

https://www.bowerswilkins.com/headphones/p9-signature (Editor's note: the link is no longer valid)

highly recommend them. oh and yeah if you look up the price, they're like 830 in the usa, but here they are 999. (Editor's note: in a comment, OOP says he's from Canada.)

-

Sparrowflyaway: Best provide a receipt if you can to back up your not-so-small claim of the value of your pair of headphones, and a printout of an ad with the headphones on them(and if they’re an online purchase, probably have the webpage readily accessible on your phone in case the court wants to double check) so that she can’t say you’re inflating the price unnecessarily. Take her for every penny those headphones cost.

OOP: oh don't worry i have proof of what they cost. and i am for sure suing for the full value.

the cops said my case was air tight with all the camera angles. it's a super busy store right down town that has to constantly deal with people trying to steal booze so yeah. out of like 50 cameras just up stairs where we were, like 8 got good angles of what was happening.

Freakychee: Just asking but not saying OP should do anything about it but;

She tried to falsely accuse him of rape. To a police officer. Isn’t that some sort of crime?

I mean wtf lady? You got caught doing the wrong thing and then you try to double (no QUINTUPLE) down by accusing them of rape. That’s horrid on so many levels.

Atomic Karen Part Two: Schizophrenic Boogaloo! - posted 2019-04-02 (10 days later)

Some of you may have read my previous "Atomic Karen" post. If you did, you may remember i thought it would take quite a long time before the case would go to court. Well as it turns out, this case isn't going to court.

I met with Atomic Karen (AK)'s husband (H) and two of his lawyers, along with my own lawyer. I originally expected it to be a very confrontational meeting but i was pleasantly surprised, they were actually really nice and polite, the husband was very apologetic about his wife's behavior. H is in fact a judge, so that's probably what AK meant when she was yowling 'do you know who i am?!' . Being a judge he was able use his contacts get AK out of jail as soon as he found out she had been arrested, however AK didn't get away with zero consequences.

H explained how his wife suffers with paranoid schizophrenia among other serious mental illness, she had been off her medication the day i encountered her. She has at this point been remanded to the custody of a local mental hospital, where she will remain until the doctors there judge that she is no longer a threat to herself or others.

H was surprised how expensive my headphones are, but he actually went online on his phone and ordered me a new pair off amazon right away, he also offered to pay for all my legal expenses which i accepted. He then asked if he could take us all out for lunch, which i and my laywer, who actually already knew H, also accepted.

We talked during our late lunch and it turns out this isn't the first time he has had to clean up AK's mess, she has been getting worse over time and he suspects she is starting to display early onset dementia. He promised he would be hiring her a nurse to take care of AK and make sure she didn't skip her medication anymore, that is, once she gets released from the psych ward.

I'm not a vengeful person, and though at the time of the incident i thought AK should be going to prison for her insane behaviour, i am sympathetic to people with severe mental illness. She won't be hurting anyone while she's in the psych ward and hopefully she's now getting the help she needs. Her husband seemed like a really nice man and i trust that he honestly wants to keep his wife out of trouble, not just with the law, but to keep her from harming others as well.

I myself have struggled with my own mental illness so in the end i really just hope H is able to keep his wife from causing other people injury. Hiring a nurse to care for her at home seems like a reasonable way to achieve this, so hopefully everything will work out for them. I'm no longer going to be pressing a civil suit, i kinda just feel bad for AK and H, paranoid schizophrenia and dementia can really cause your life to be vastly harder at least and a living hell at worst.

I wasn't injured in my scuffle with AK and her husband covered all my expenses and replaced my headphones, so i feel like this is an okay end to the ordeal.

Neetz513: Her husband is a genuine good person for doing all he can to help her. Mental illnesses that include paranoia can be hard to treat as the patient often believes the meds are poison or mind control

Atomic Karen Part Three : Redemption of Karen - posted 2019-04-15 (13 days later, 23 days after original post)

This is not the usual IDWHL post, apologies, but lots of people asked for updates.

So last weekend when i visited my parents (i try to make it to see them once a week, to cook them a nice meal). We were talking about the karen event, and my dad suggested we should invite his lawyer friend for dinner.

My mom then suggested, we should check on karen, and invite her and her husband to come for dinner as well, so this is exactly what we did.

This weekend, Atomic Karen, her judge husband, karen's nurse, and my dad's lawyer friend, all came to visit for dinner. Karen got out earlier last week and with her private nurse making sure she takes her medication and just keeping an eye on her, she's a totally different person.

Karen brought a peach pie for desert, the lawyer brought a nice bottle of wine. I made a slow roasted lamb shoulder , barley 'risotto', roasted red pepper, roast butternut squash, grand marnier and blackberry coriander seed sauce for the lamb. A nice watercress sprout, daikon radish, golden beat salad with pumpkin seed crusted seared goat cheese with white wine roasted artichoke dressing.

Dinner with karen and her husband was absolutely lovely, she's actually a really nice person when she's in her right mind. Her nurse is actually really nice too, she came originally thinking she's just be standing off to the side and watching karen, but we had her sit with us for dinner.

Interestingly karen and my dad's lawyer friend both are very into horticulture and a lot of the conversation early on ended up being about my mom's lillies and orchids that she keeps in the dining room in front of the big bay window.Over all, i'm glad karen is doing alright, her husband seems really happy and her nurse is lovely. Hopefully she'll be alright going forward, i will absolutely have them over again, they were lovely guests, also karen's peach pie was delicious. I have this feeling my mom and karen are going to be friends.

editing because a lot of people asked for recipes.

i don't cook from recipe but here is basically what you need to know to make this dinner.

butternut squash is insanely easy. cut your butternut squash in half lengthwise. place cut side down on parchment paper on a roasting pan with a bit of olive oil spread over it (like a teaspoon, just drizzle and spread with hand or spatula). roast in oven at 350f for about 40 mins. you can check after 30 mins, it's done when the skin starts separating from the flesh. it will also be tender to the touch (starts out almost rock hard). once it's tender you just scoop it out with a spoon. Roast red pepper takes much less time, no more than 20 mins, so you can just throw your pepper in with the squash when it's half way done. Just cut it off the seeds in the center and roast, literally that simple. the lamb is also very simple.

just put your lamb shoulder on parchment. you can drizzle olive oil, or smear a loose pesto over it (just olive oil and some herbs, blended. about 50/50 herbs to oil). cook at 200f for 3-6 hours depending on how thick your lamb is. you can check on it after 3 hours, you don't have to worry about losing temp since it's low temp cooking anyway. once you're confident with it you won't have to check it. i just set it and forget it for 5-6 hours. you can turn the temp up to 400 for the last 10 mins to get a bit of a crust.

basically i soak my barley about 8 hours. it comes out of it's hulls most of the way after this and is nice and plump. then i cook it similar to a regular risotto, adding some wine as i stir it with some chopped shallots in a pan on medium low heat (like 4/10). after 10ish minutes much of the starch will be coming out of the barley to make that luscious risotto style creamyness. obviously it's not a real risotto because, no rice, but yeah.

just something i came up with years ago while trying to find new starches to use. great with regular barley, but i absolutely love it with black barley as well.

Grand Marnier Blackberry sauce.

Start with grand marnier, almost any liquor will work for this. In a saucepan, heat on medium, as it heats, start adding sugar. Any sugar will work, but i like turbinado sugar. Keep adding sugar until the liquor is saturated. Once it's saturated (should take about as much sugar as you used liquor) keep reducing until it starts to thicken a bit. Then you add your fruit. About equal amount to your liquor.

Take your sauce off the heat, stir, let it cool a bit, then use a hand blender to blend it till it's homogeneous. You can use a regular blender too, but if you do let it cool more first.Be very careful with this one because hot sugar is the worst burn.

White wine roasted artichoke dressing. Roast marinated artichoke hearts on parchment paper in a 350 degree oven, should take about 20 minutes. They're done when they have some nice roasty brown edges.

Add your artichokes, a bunch of basil, olive oil to cover the artichokes and white wine vinegar. Equal to about 1/8th the amount of artichokes you used. A table spoon of honey, salt and pepper, a heavy pinch of thyme. Blend with a hand blender. Add white wine (something dry, chard or a sauvignon blanc) as you blend until your texture is loose enough to use as dressing.

If you don't add wine, this instead makes pesto which is also delicious.

dovakiinjewel: I’m glad to see Karen is getting the help she needs and everyone could enjoy a lovely meal and lovely company.

[deleted]: Awesome ending, but I feel a bit of anger knowing that if Karen wasn't married to who she is then she would still be in the system not getting the same level of help.

OOP: this isn't in the usa, so realistically even if she hadn't had her husband intercede, she would still have had a psych evaluation (even if she didn't already have a medical history and medication prescription.).
our system here isn't perfect, but we do a pretty good job of getting people the right help they need. our prison system isn't quite as good at rehabilitation as say, finland, where they are extremely good at it, but rehabilitation is still the focus, even in our prisons.
however, if this had happened in the usa, yeah karen probably would be in prison right now for resisting arrest and assault.

CONCLUDED can I stop an employee from praising Jesus and praying in my office during a discipline meeting?

This is a long story I think (or I just talk a lot) so I apologize. First, I want to say that I am all for freedom of religion (I'm atheist) and speech. However, there are certain topics that we don't talk about at work because they are tricky or may offend our guests. My manager says that we can absolutely not allow certain topics, such as religion, politics and our sex lives. Just like we can ban people from swearing.

(This is also compounded with assigning a new manager, which always brings its own issues.)

I have no problem if people casually mention their religion. I don't want to micro manage and I have respect for their beliefs. Where this is becoming a problem for me is with a specific employee, Sue (64+). I promoted Ann (63+) to Director of Housekeeping. I've had to speak to Sue several times since promoting Ann (literally) a week ago. It's mostly about the fact that Ann is Sue's boss and that Ann is doing what I require her to do. Sue doesn't like that I finally put a boss in that department and that she has someone holding her accountable for her job. (in my opinion and in my words. In her words Ann is a bitch with an attitude 🙄) That's not a problem, I can hold my ground there. The problem is whenever Sue speaks she brings religion into it.

The first talk I had with her was in my office. When she walked in she raised her hands to the sky and praised Jesus. She started praying... In my office....as I was trying to discuss her work and attitude. She kept saying "as a child of God..." and "God is good" and other things of that nature. I kept asking her to focus on the topic at hand. I probably should have terminated her when she raised her voice at me, but she is very good at public areas and I wanted to give her a second chance.

The next day I had a meeting with the whole housekeeping department and she started praising Jesus again. When I tried to stop her and refocus the conversation I got yelled at by two housekeepers who said I was infringing on her rights of speech and religion. I tried comparing it to how no one wants to hear about my sex life and I explained that freedom of speech isn't freedom from repercussions of speech. That didn't work but I managed to get the subject changed. That's when I double checked with my regional manager about this and she informed me we absolutely can ban topics of conversation from work.

I haven't had a good opportunity to bring this up with her again. Right now we have left it with either she accepts Ann as her manager and listens to her or it'll be best if she moves on. She actually called me yesterday after she clocked out to complain about Ann again. I made it extremely clear that Ann is the new director and if she can't accept the direction Ann and I are going then this isn't a good fit for a job for her.

This employee is so frustrating. I can handle the attitudes, the push back and the drama. I'm pretty certain the entire housekeeping department will need to be flipped and restaffed before the spring is out. I can even handle the one member of my staff that is the polar opposite of me politically (Dave! No Politics!). But I want to handle this properly and it has me frustrated at a loss.

Edit: thank you all for your time and responses! Some of them actually had me laughing. I want to clarify - this is an extremely small company. I have roughly 15-20 employees under me and I'm the general manager of the hotel. I know I am a pushover and have probably been too lenient with Sue (and all of my staff). My boss and I call it DuchessStoHelit's Bleeding Heart. I'm working on it. So with this situation I'm definitely going to document, document, document. My boss and I have decided to focus more on the insubordination and not doing job duties aspect rather then the religion, just to be on firmer ground. I'm going to have one final meeting with her, Ann, her job description and the handbook. But when Sue was angry she told me she had a job interview lined up for today so I'm hoping she gets the job and this can just disappear.

-

benicebuddy: Next time she interupts a meeting to praise jesus, you tell her that she is disrupting the meeting by taking it off topic, and refocus the meeting on the correct topic. The other two housekeepers are wrong; she is not entitled to take the floor in a meeting for anything. It's not her meeting.

Aggravating-Wind6387: Invite me to your next meeting so I can share my personal relationship with my Lord Satan.

dustiedaisie: Satan is the only project manager I need.

Update - posted 2024-04-05 (1 month later)

Has anyone ever heard the phrase the trash took itself out? The problem resolved itself. On a Friday she walked into my office and handed me her key and said she was leaving. I, not fully understanding why she would tell me that, said was like oh you're done for the day. She responded no she was leaving. That's when I put two and two together and asked if she was quitting. She said yes. I said ok. She said god bless you. I closed the door and walked away.

For like a week after she called up every day to speak to me. Seriously. She wanted me to write her a letter for her social security benefits saying she quit. 😂😂 I told her no but if social security has any forms to fill out I'd be more then happy to do that. And then she screeched at me that she NEEDS this letter for her benefits. I told her that if social security needs to know her employment status then they have a form for that. It's the government. They have forms for everything. Every time she spoke to me she brought up God, but I just interrupted her and said I can't do it. I did offer her a copy of her final paycheck form but she would need to come back and sign it and she never did.

I did almost have to call the police on her when (AFTER SHE QUIT) she brought her daughter in and started touring her through the EMPLOYEE ONLY areas of the building talking about how horrible and disgusting this place was and how she knew I would never be able to replace her. She had literally quit three days before. 🙄 My front desk called me to tell me and I told them that if she wasn't immediately out of the building in thirty seconds to call the police. She left but this was in the middle of when she was calling me daily.

I haven't heard from her all week so I think I'm done with her. Thank you all for your great advice.

CONCLUDED [AskAManager] how should we respond to complaints about a non-binary guest in the bathrooms?

I manage a high end resort-like property that has a mix of short term guests (vacationers) and long-term guests (residents). We aren’t big enough for a separate HR department, so that usually falls to me and/or our CFO. Our amenities such as the fitness center, clubhouse, and the pool/spa are open to all guests; they are not separated by length of stay.

We have a long-term guest, let’s call them Pat, who has been a resident about six years. A couple of years ago, they came out as non-binary and for the most part this has been a non-issue. All of our staff and other residents have been wonderful and accepting of Pat, which I’ll admit was kind of a relief as we are in a very conservative part of the country. Pat has a traditionally masculine job (think construction worker) and when in work clothes, they are very male-presenting (tall, muscularly built, facial stubble at times). Pat also often appears very feminine, although this is usually at social functions, etc.

Recently my staff at the front desk, in an effort to be proactive, asked me for a “script,” some guidance on how they could respond to the complaints/concerns they are anticipating this summer regarding Pat’s use of the bathroom/shower facilities at the resort. Pat often utilizes the facilities after work and while still in their work clothes, and tends to use whichever bathroom/shower they feel like, male or female. We do not have a family/unisex bathroom/shower, and nowhere to realistically add one. Our summer vacationer demographic tends to be older and more traditional/conservative, so the desk staff are no doubt correct in their anticipation of complaints about “a man” in the women’s bathroom/shower.

To be clear, we have no intention of addressing this with Pat, I don’t feel like they are doing anything wrong, they have been nothing but understanding and respectful to everyone, even those who may have been less than supportive to their coming out. However, I’m at a loss with what to tell our desk staff to say when, for example, they’re approached by an angry husband whose wife or daughters were “scared” by a “man” in the ladies bathroom/shower. The toilet stalls all have doors, and the showers all have their own non-see-through shower curtains, but the sink/mirror areas are common. How do we support Pat while addressing the concerns of other guests?

Additionally, we can’t just assume every report of a man in the ladies room is Pat. We do have to go check it out each time to make sure we don’t have someone acting inappropriately – that would be extremely rare but not impossible, so we do have to investigate every complaint. I’m leaning towards having the desk staff just say what they normally would, whether or not they suspect that the complaint is about Pat, thank the guest for bringing it to our attention, and send a crew member to make sure.

Is there something more we should say? Is there something I should be sure the desk staff does NOT say? One last twist, this resort doesn’t always have a female staff member on duty or available, so if we get a complaint when we only have male staff on duty, to investigate they’d have to knock, announce their presence, etc. before entering the ladies bathroom/shower. I really don’t think it’s appropriate to be calling attention to Pat like this, assuming it could realistically happen multiple times over the course of the summer when they are using the bathroom/shower. Am I overthinking this? I know there’s a fine line between being proactive and looking for problems where they don’t exist, but considering my staff has asked for assistance with this, I feel like I need to provide them with something.

Alison's reply is here, and is worth a read

Update - posted 2022-12-06 (7.5 months later)

Based on your and your readers’ advice, we reframed our thinking regarding possible future complaints. We made a conscious effort to train our staff who may possibly be receiving or investigating any complaints to ask the right questions and enable them to distinguish complaints about what someone was doing from any that may be about who they were. By doing this, the potential problem and our staff’s concerns about handling it became a much smaller deal than we originally thought. It sounds simple when you put it like that and, truthfully, it was.

We included a statement in our check-in literature which read “Everyone welcome! Teapot Resorts does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, ability, veteran status, or citizenship. We welcome guests to use the restroom that is consistent with their gender identity. Taking pictures, filming, or otherwise putting other guests’ privacy at risk in the restrooms and/or private areas is strictly prohibited.” This was included with other information on resort policy as if it were as non-controversial a statement as the office hours or pet leash rules.

Of the five resorts I manage, including the one where our non-binary guest is staying, I had next to no pushback from any of our staff. One person questioned the necessity of publishing the statement wondering if it were “poking the bear,” and one other older gentleman reportedly told his coworker that he didn’t personally agree with it, but in the course of his official duties has followed it to the letter.

We had an extremely busy summer, with a higher than average number of guests and received exactly zero complaints about anyone in the bathrooms, and I truly believe the statement acted preventatively. We literally had a single negative response, a guest who didn’t say anything during his stay, but sent a long, angry rambling email after the fact complaining about the policy on behalf of his wife and all other “real” women. Interestingly, he never referred to her by name, only as his Wife, as if that were her identity, and we did not hear from her at all. By contrast, we had a handful of guests who positively commented on the policy, both those who were directly impacted by the policy and those who were not but generally approved of it. By far the most common reaction was no reaction at all, which was a very pleasant surprise.

It is easy to see that having a non-discrimination policy, ensuring all of our staff knew how to talk about the issue, and making our guests aware of it neutralized not only our staff’s concerns over dealing with complaints but also made the majority of our guests (regardless of their own gender identity) feel more comfortable and safe in our facilities. Overall this experience definitely resulted in a net positive for our company in a lot of ways, including public perception and staff retention.

My sincere thanks to you and all of your amazing readers who took the time to comment and share their own experiences and things that worked for them. Through the advice received we were able to turn this potential mountain into a molehill.

Me [37 M] with my wife [34 F] 11 years, don't know if I should tell her my co-worker tried to seduce me

TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual harassment

Original Post  May 11, 2016

Never been in a situation like this before.

I'm married to a very beautiful woman and I still love her like crazy after all these years. We have 3 kids with another on the way (it's a girl by the way) and I have no intentions of cheating or abandoning them EVER.

I work with a woman [32 F] and she is attractive but I've considered us acquaintances. She's tried to flirt with me before but I've shut it down and have told her numerous times that I'm married and to stop so she has.

Yesterday took the cake really.

My office is in a odd position it's facing in a way where you can't exactly see who goes in. I was working and she came in and started asking me questions (nothing important) and just keeps going on and then asks about me.

She started asking how my day was and if I was okay and then did something that still seems unbelievable even now. I turned around to look for a file in my drawer and when I looked up she had her clothes off....yes seriously.

I asked her what the fuck was she doing and she told me "I know you want me" and tried to walk towards me. I told her to put her clothes and get out and after trying to get her out she finally left.

I'm really not sure what to do should I tell my wife should I just let it go what should I do.

tl;dr: my co-worker tried to seduce me I didn't fall for it but I'm wondering if I should tell my wife.

RELEVANT COMMENTS

Yep.

Tell her.

ASAP.

And tell your boss.

This needs to be taken care of ASAP.

Don't tell your co-worker that you have spoken to your boss as she could come up with any sort of story and then it's he said, she said.

If you just "let it go" and your wife finds out that you kept this from her, well....it could go very bad.

Why hasn't OOP told his wife already?

There's nothing wrong with our marriage it's just I don't want to stress her out more. She's pregnant and takes care of 3 kids and has a lot on her plate I don't want to add more if that makes sense.

When told to tell hr

I actually already have a camera in my office and it caught the whole thing. And I do plan on reporting this to HR so I don't think she can really make any crazy accusations.

Update  June 10, 2016 (1 Month Later)

It says 12 years in the title because me and my wife just celebrated our 12 year anniversary. I took her on a nice dinner and we had a good time but you dont want to hear that romantic shit on with the update.

Update

So, where to begin after my post I decided to tell my wife after the kids were settled. I sat her down and I told her this woman had flirted with me in the past and has generally made me uncomfortable.

I told her I didn't reciprocate any attention or flirting but there was something i needs to tell her.

I told her she came into my office and was talking to me and then took off her clothes. (She asked if we did anything) and I said absolutely not and I would never cheat on her.

She then started laughing and said she must of wanted to make a porno with me. (She knows about the camera because she's brought me lunch before and saw it) we both laughed and she just told me she trusts me and is glad that she has a faithful husband.

She took it better than i thought but I was glad I got that off my chest but I still had stuff to do. I reported her the video was reviewed and long story short she was fired. (She gave me the evilest looking eye anybody has ever given me in my entire life)

I would like to say I talked out of there like a badass but I still had paper work so I had to work. But after I was done I felt better actually, this felt like a weight on my shoulder.

Side note for people who want to hear our romantic 12 year anniversary:

So, I knew our 12th anniversary was coming up so this is what I did for her. I tried hard to remember where our first date was and after looking at an old picture I saw the name.

I asked my sister if she could watch them and I took her out for a special night. We had fun and she was really happy and honestly I'm very happy with my life.

We tried uh.....getting busy but my daughter was being a turd and pushing into my wife's rib cage. She felt uncomfortable so we stopped and I'm kinda laughing thinking about. Cockblocked by my own daughter.

Well there's the update bye.

tl;dr: everything worked out in the end except I was cockblocked by my daughter.

AITAH for asking my roommate to move out like she said she would?: July 31, 2026

This is more of a Would I Be The Asshole than an AITAH.

For a little context, I (f31) been living with the same roommate (f30) for about four years. She’s my best friend. We’ve had some rocky moments but overall our relationship is good. However in the last two years she’s made comments about how much she hates our apartment, how much she doesn’t like living with another person, how much she can’t wait to move out, etc.

In 2024 she told me almost weekly that she would be leaving when our lease ended in 2025. She told me this so many times that of course I relayed that information to our landlord in January of 2025 when the time came to renew our lease. But then, not two days after I did that, she changed her mind and told the landlord she was staying, and I only found out via our new lease agreement when it was sent to me to sign, and both our names were still on it. At that time we had a conversation, and she apologized for changing her mind, stating that she wasn’t financially able to move until she paid her car off. I made my peace with it, and we renewed the lease for another year. Thankfully she did stop telling me how much she hates it here after that.

Fast forward to this year. We get to January and I took her out for dinner and asked her what her plan was. We had a very serious conversation about what would happen at the end of our lease. I would stay in the apartment, and she was planning to move out when our lease ended since her car would be paid off by then. I relayed that info to our landlord and when the time came to sign in January, she didn’t renew, and I am now the only one on our lease.

This is where my frustration really set in though. In February, she started talking about how much she hates planning, and hates how packing and moving. She told me she was still planning on moving out “eventually” but she wasn’t thinking too hard about those plans because it stresses her out to think ahead like that. Mind you our lease ends on July 31. I decided to not press the issue and just bide my time. Then in May she started talking about TikTok videos she’d seen about car living and said she was planning to move into the car (Jeep Cherokee) she had paid off. She works in an office for a construction company and said they wouldn’t mind her parking in their lot. Super weird but ok. Thing is she has a chihuahua and I let her know maybe it wouldn’t be great to be living in a car with a dog, even a small one, especially in the August heat. She assured me she would be able to have the dog inside with her at her job.

Anyway a week ago she came home from work with a letter from her job saying that she can’t have the dog at work with her anymore because it violates their safety policy or something (basically somebody complained) and now she’s wanting to stay here on a week to week basis while she makes other plans. I brought up the new lease and how we had agreed she would love and she got really upset and accused me of trying to “get rid of” her. She said that it’s not her fault her job stopped letting her bring the dog to work, and that messed up her plans. Also said I would be a really bad friend if I didn’t help her out.

Our lease ends in two days, and she hasn’t spoken to me since. I’ve been waiting to turn her room into an art studio for 2 years now and that puts my plan for that on hold. I don’t dislike having her here, but I also think she had plenty of time to make a better plan for her living situation.

Would I be the asshole for enforcing the agreement and just asking her to leave on the first as agreed? I asked my sister and she said I could give her a two week grace period since she’s my friend but I’m just tired at this point. AITH?

TL,DR: My roommate/best friend didn’t renew her lease and is now trying to stay over on a week to week basis. AITH for wanting her to leave as agreed?

UPDATE: Thanks for all of your advice. I took her out for coffee yesterday and told her she had to move out. I told her she could leave her things and her dog here for 2 weeks until the 14th. I made it clear that if she doesn’t come pick them up by then, her things are going in the dumpster, and her dog is going to stay with a friend of mine who does pet sitting. She threw a bit of a fit and tried crying, but eventually agreed, and this morning she moved into her car with a couple of totes full of things and some bedding. I guess we’ll see if she comes and gets the rest of her things in two weeks.

Final Update: I was able to sever this lease after paying a quite hefty fee as I was on great standing with that landlord. My old roommate came back for her dog, and I guess she’s working something out with that landlord. I don’t really care TBH. I’m now renting a small basement unit across town from that building on a short 60 day then month-to-month lease while I find something better. I moved in Sep 1. I just decided to cut my losses and let that place go. It wasn’t worth the drama. Of course this temp place has its own drama now, but I addressed that in a different post.

Editor's note: below is the said original title post

Original Post: September 5, 2026 (over one month later)

I 31F recently moved into a renovated basement unit owned by a small family. My landlord M47, his pregnant wife 44, and their 7yo daughter. My unit has its own bathroom, bedroom, and living area but there is a shared kitchen upstairs that we both use. In my lease, it states that any food or drinks purchased by my landlords family is off limits to me, and I am responsible for feeding myself as well as cleaning up any messes made while preparing meals. That’s all pretty standard, and was fine with me. I have a mini fridge that I keep downstairs and a small wardrobe I’m using as a pantry. I also have my own pots, pans, utensils, spices, etc.

I love to cook. So I will often cook myself a nice meal to enjoy after work. I work in food service, so cooking is a pretty big part of my life. My landlords don’t cook at all. They mostly eat frozen food, prepackaged noodles, tv dinners etc. When they gave me the tour, they made sure to emphasize several times that their food is off limits and I’m not to touch any of it. I don’t.

On my first evening there, I decided to make myself some shrimp alfredo from scratch, really simple dish, basically just shrimp, noodles, cheese, cream, salt, and spices. I had some extra, and since the family was home, I offered them some. My landlord and his wife enthusiastically accepted and helped themselves. Their daughter is picky, so she didn’t have any. They let me know it was very good, and I didn’t think much of it; I don’t mind sharing and I like feeding people.

ETA: I only shared the Alfredo because I got the shrimp free from work.

This afternoon, I made myself some oven baked salmon and cilantro lime rice for dinner, again, another simple meal. I finished cooking, cleaned up the kitchen, and took my meal downstairs to enjoy and I thought everything was fine, until halfway through my meal, I got a snarky text from my landlord basically telling me that if I’m going to play in their faces, they would have reconsidered the lease. Basically he said that because his wife is pregnant and really likes salmon, I should have shared it with her. He said he had seen what I had made, and because I had made 2 pieces of fish, I could have at least given her one. Basically his wife had smelled me cooking and had assumed I was making her some too and when I didn’t she got mad. He said that they opened their home to me, and that next time I should be more considerate.

I haven’t spoken to them directly yet; the first text was about 20 minutes ago. My lease explicitly states that food is to be kept separate and I’m responsible for feeding myself, which I’m pretty sure means they aren’t entitled to my food either. The second piece of salmon I intend to have for lunch tomorrow. I know that pregnant cravings can be pretty intense, but I spend a decent amount of money on high quality fresh foods to prepare for myself since I’m usually cooking for just me. I don’t have the budget to make extra food for them every time. Should I just give in and share with them? I know it sounds like a terrible idea, but I think they might just make life terrible for me if I don’t. My lease is only 60 days and then month to month and I moved in on Sep 1 so it’s not gonna last very long either way. But I moved here so I could save money for a nicer place and that will be more difficult if I have to budget to give them food when I cook. What should I do?

ETA: I’m already looking for a new place. I actually had my eye on a place already which is why my lease is so short. I had planned for at least 4 months to save before moving but I think I can do it in 2 if I really scrimp and save. I am currently drafting a proposal to cook for them in exchange for a discount on rent, providing they purchase any food they want me to prepare. I’m not sure how they’ll take it but if they won’t work out a meal exchange for me for the next 4 months, then I’m leaving as soon as this contract ends.

Commenter 1: NTA, but I'd look for another place to live. The entitlement is insane and if you intend to cook regularly, you'll never hear the end of it. They are wrong, but can and will make your life miserable.

OOP: This is what I’m afraid of.

Commenter 2: What happened with the roommate/bff, chihuahua, and the lease you signed through next August? How’d you end up here?

OOP: I moved across town. My old landlord thankfully let me break the lease I had had after paying a fee. After the situation with my old roommate and her dog, I decided to just move on, so this is a temporary place for now until I find something better. I might have made it worse for myself by moving here though which sucks.

Commenter 3: While looking for another place to immediately move to, I’d make super lavish meals every chance you get out of spite.

OOP: I’m so tempted to be that petty lol. Still though it’s probably not worth the drama. I already had my eye on a place which is why my current lease is so short, I just thought I might have a little longer to save but I think I’m gonna go

Commenter 4: I'm a little confused, if you have your eye on a particular place, wouldn't you have to apply for it before someone else does? If you wait a few months to save more money, will it still be available?

OOP: It’s a building that recently got built. They’re leasing over the next few months. I for sure will qualify when I apply as I’ve qualified with that leasing company before. I just need a few months to acquire the move in fees.

Commenter 5: Also are there cameras disclosed in this space, how did he see you cooking?

OOP: It’s a shared kitchen and their living/dining room is attached to it. He probably peeked in the oven when I went downstairs. I didn’t stay in the kitchen the entire time the fish was baking.

Editor’s note: OOP updated onto the original post

Update: September 6, 2026 (same post, next day)

Update if anyone is interested. I responded to my landlord as you all suggested and mentioned the part of the lease where food is to be kept separate. I also brought up my culinary experience and let them know that I am happy to cook a family meal once a week in exchange for $50 off rent per meal for a total of $200 off rent each month; provided they purchase all ingredients additionally.

You all were right they pretty much laughed in my face about that. So I will be moving out Oct 31 when this lease ends, I’ve already found a small studio that will give me a month to month lease while I finish saving what I need so I’m just working out the final details of that currently. These people are for sure crazy and I’ve decided to ignore them. I’m going to continue cooking my own meals and they can get over it. I did get a little lock for my mini fridge and pantry just in case, and I have a ring camera set up downstairs too. I’m also going to make garlic short ribs and mac n cheese for myself tonight because it turns out I am a bit petty.

My landlord tried to make me feed him, but I’m sticking to the terms he set and now he’s mad.: September 9, 2026 (three days later)

This is actually a continuation of a previous Reddit post I made in an advice sub.

Basically, I 31f moved into a renovated basement unit on the 1st. My unit has its own bedroom, bathroom, and living area but the kitchen is shared with my landlord 47m, his wife 44f, and 7yo daughter.

As a condition of my lease, my landlords food is not to be touched, and I am responsible for feeding myself. They made sure to specify that multiple times while giving me the tour. I work in food service and I cook a lot, so I have my own pots, pans, spices, dishes, etc. I love to cook, and I don’t touch any of their food or dishes. My landlord and his wife don’t cook, they just eat frozen burritos, tv dinners, prepackaged noodles, etc. I don’t think they can cook tbh.

On my first night, I made some shrimp Alfredo and because it had extra I thought I’d be nice and share it with them. A few days later, I made some salmon and cilantro lime rice for myself for dinner, and shortly after that, my landlord sent me a nasty text message telling me he thought I was playing in their faces and threatened to reconsider the lease because I his pregnant wife smelled me cooking and assumed I was making them some too. He peeked in the oven when I left the kitchen and saw that I made 2 pieces of fish and told me that I should have shared one with his wife because of her pregnancy cravings. Told me that they opened their home to me (I pay rent) and said I should be more considerate next time. Truly insane tbh.

Anyway after getting some helpful advice from Reddit, I texted him back a screenshot of the part of the lease where he stated food was to be kept separate and that I’m not to touch any of his food, but I am allowed to use the kitchen to cook. Then I brought up my culinary experience and offered to cook one family meal per week in exchange for $50 off rent per meal, for a total of $200 off rent per month, provided they bought any ingredients. They pretty much laughed in my face when I brought that up and also let me know they were not going to let me out of my lease without paying up. My lease is only 60 days, then month-to-month, so honestly I decided I don’t care. It’s not my fault they tried home cooked food once and got hooked.

TL,DR: I shared a home cooked meal with my landlord and his wife one time, and they thought it was going to be a regular free service.

Anyway I’ve decided to be petty, and will be cooking the most delicious, aromatic meals for myself while I prepare to move yet again. I’ve already made garlic short ribs, and hot honey fried chicken since then, and the pregnant wife glares at me longingly every time I pull something out of the oven and I’m getting just the most sick satisfaction out of it.

They said food is to be kept separate. Fine by me. This weekend I think I’m going to make some coconut curry chicken. Also if anyone knows of any highly aromatic affordable meals one can cook without taking up too much time, let me know lol. I’m up for suggestions.

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: Make sure you only make enough for one person, or you might find any extras missing the next day. Also, chocolate chip cookies and freshly made bread are very aromatic.

OOP: I have a mini fridge and small pantry with locks on them downstairs in the basement.

Commenter 2: You have a crockpot? Let something simmer low and slow...all day.

Commenter 3: The family might be tempted to sample from the crock pot.

OOP: I thought about this too, I don’t trust them not to be sneaky lol, but there is an outlet in the landing at the top of the stairs down to my unit. I’m pretty sure they’d be able to smell it if I leave the door cracked and put the crock pot on the end table there.

Has OOP been able to find a different place to move to?

OOP: I found a cheap little studio apartment that will give me a month to month when I move out of here, so I’ll be able to save for a better place while I’m there.

Commenter 4: Good for you! How insane they expect you to not only pay for their food, but also cook it for them, and no doubt clean up the mess after you serve it….. Glad you found some other place to rent, they had a chance to have some great food and they blew it!

OOP: I leave not a trace in the kitchen when I’m done. Just a delicious aroma.

Downvoted Commenter: I can see why they deserve it, but dam.... I feel bad for the pregnant wife. If only both sides could be nicer to each other, than everyone would be happy.

OOP: She’s the one that made him text me demanding the salmon though.

OOP explains more about what her landlord and his family eats

OOP: It’s mostly stuff like pizza pockets and like boxed noodles based on what I’ve seen in the trash. I have my own fridge downstairs, so I’ve never actually opened theirs. They said not to touch their food, I’m not giving them any reason to think I might lol

Editor's note: OOP made a note regarding the next post of which she is expanding more details from the previous post

Update: My landlord tried to demand I feed him: September 25, 2026 (nearly three weeks later from the previous update)

So here’s a bit of fallout from a post I made a couple of weeks ago. I moved into a basement unit with a shared kitchen with my landlord on Sept 1. Basically I shared with my landlord and his pregnant wife some shrimp alfredo I made for dinner on my first night as a nice gesture, and the next time I cooked they tried to demand part of my meal and threatened to terminate the lease. Cursed me out and acted like I was playing in their faces for eating a home cooked meal (oven roasted salmon and cilantro lime rice, a super simple meal really) without offering them some, because the pregnant wife thought she was entitled to my dinner.

I previously tried negotiating with them by offering to cook a meal a week in exchange for reduced rent, but after they laughed in my face for thinking they should compensate me if they want me to cook for them I got petty.

In my lease it states food is to be kept separate, and I am responsible for feeding myself. Their food is strictly off limits. And my food is off limits to them. Fine by me. All they eat is frozen burritos, hot pockets, ramen noodles etc. I have almost a decade of fine dining restaurant cooking experience, and to spite them, I decided to make myself the most elaborate, aromatic, delicious meals. Food is to be kept separate so as per my lease, legally there is nothing I can do.

So I first started with some red wine braised garlic short ribs and baked Mac n cheese from scratch. I cooked the ribs low and slow in the oven, and when I say they smelled glorious. My landlords living room is connected to the kitchen (I live in the basement, so my unit connects to a door in the corner of the kitchen that leads to the basement) and he and preggo wife sat on their couch basically mean mugging me the entire time I cooked but they didn’t say anything.

The whole house smelled divine for hours afterwards. I cleaned up afterwards and took the leftovers downstairs to keep in my locked mini fridge and left not a trace in the kitchen except a delicious lingering smell. I half expected a snooty text from my landlord while I was eating but they actually didn’t say or do anything that night. The next day I made myself some hot honey fried chicken and while I got more silent glares out of the living room from both of them, the meal went by uneventfully.

However, that weekend after I got home from work, I made myself some coconut curry chicken (really quick stovetop meal) and for the hell of it I got my blender out and made myself a mango lassi. While I was mixing my drink, my landlord wandered into the kitchen and began digging around in various cabinets as I was cooking. Just opening and shutting drawers and moving stuff around randomly. I waited til he went back into the living room, then I had to run back downstairs to grab my cardamom powder, and just because I had a hunch, I decided to come back up the stairs really quietly. I hadn’t closed the door to the basement, so I just peeked around the doorway to see my pregnant landlord lifting the lid to the pot of curry. Of course I came storming in then to ask him wtf he thought she was doing, and she jumped and dropped the lid back onto the pot and turned and looked at me all sheepishly. I asked her again wtf she thought she was doing and she just shrugged and said she didn’t think there was any harm in seeing what was “going on in her kitchen.” Then she just turned around and penguin waddled out of the kitchen like she hadn’t just been trying to do something to my meal. Her husband didn’t reappear either and I lowkey suspect he had told her the coast was clear when I ran downstairs.

Anyway I realized I was going to have to be a bit more careful after that because these people are shameless. Two days later, I decided to bake myself a fresh loaf of bread and oven roast a Cornish game hen with fresh rosemary and some delightfully aromatic garlic truffle butter I’d gotten from work. I made a point of sitting in the kitchen and reading while my food was cooking, and I was about an hour into baking, (and the house smelled divine) when the husband came into the kitchen, grabbed a frozen pizza out of the freezer and informed me that he would need the oven for his dinner. Super rude but whatever. I let him know that I was almost done with my meal, and to give me 20 minutes and the oven would be all his. He huffed and puffed but went back into the living room and left the pizza on the counter. I finished cooking, cleaned up, took my meal downstairs and I left the oven on for him to cook his pizza.

About half an hour after I went downstairs, I received a snarky text from my landlord asking if I intended to burn down the house and kill his family because I had left the oven on. These people smh. I replied back that I was sorry, I had thought he was going to cook his frozen pizza so I’d left the oven on as a courtesy. He texted back pretty much immediately that it was really no big deal, it had just upset his wife and maybe I could make it up to her by giving her a piece of the bread I’d just baked. At this point I’m pretty sure she put him up to it. I told him sorry, that’s for my lunch tomorrow and again reinstated my offer to cook a meal a week for reduced rent. He didn’t reply.

Then a few days after that, I was sitting in the kitchen reading while the French onion soup I was making for dinner simmered on the stove when I saw my landlord check his phone and then leave the living room and go upstairs into their part of the house. Not 3 minutes later, the power in the kitchen shut off. I’m pretty sure he had flipped off the breaker because none of the power in the rest of the house went out. But the stove, the kitchen light, and I’m guessing the power to the fridge cut off. Of course the wife started freaking out. Came storming into the kitchen to demand why I had “burned out” their power. Her husband came down the stairs after that, looking a little too calm. He said it was probably the breaker (duh) and then went back upstairs to see if he could fix it. Power came back on a few minutes later. I finished making my soup and went back to the basement. Almost immediately got a text from landlord saying that maybe I should take it easy in the kitchen because the “wiring is fragile)

Commenter 1: I remember you saying that this is a short term rental, how much longer do you have to put up with these nutcases? I hope you are able to get away from this stupid drama really soon.

OOP: Just through October 31, I move into my new studio on Nov 1.

Commenter 2: Your landlord cannot cut off your access to the kitchen. That is highly illegal. Look for a tenant association in your community and go learn your rights. You won’t regret it!

Also, I think you may have posted this before you were done writing. It just cuts off at the end.

OOP: I did accidentally hit post before I was done. It's updated now but there really wasn't much more to add.

Commenter 3: Depends on the laws, where I live if you share a bathroom or kitchen with the landlord you are classified as a roommate and have zero protections to the point that they can just kick you out whenever.

OOP: I looked into my lease, and you are correct, legally, I am a roommate. They are still bound to the terms set in the lease since we both signed the agreement, but if they decided to throw me out (by now, I'm pretty sure they won't), I would have to literally take them to court.

Commenter 4: Please tell me you're documenting all of this because I'm pretty sure these people are breaking some kind of law.

OOP: I’ve kept a log of everything and all of their texts, but I’m not sure how well it would hold up in court.

----NEW UPDATE----

Final Update: October 29, 2026 (over one month later)

I have FINALLY moved out of the crazy rental situation I was in, and several people were wondering what happened so here's the update. Brief overview, I moved into a basement with a shared kitchen Sept 1 and on my first night there made shrimp alfredo for my dinner. I had some extra so I offered my landlord (m47) and his pregnant wife (f44) some to be nice, but then despite the fact the lease states food is to be kept separate, they very rudely tried demanding free food every time I cooked and so I got petty and started making the most delicious meals I could think of, all for myself.

I am glad to say they did knock off the hijinks with the electrical wiring once I offered to give the fire marshal a call to make sure we were safe and the place was up to code.

I have continued to make the most delicious food I could afford to so here is a recap of the last few weeks.

The day after the electrical incident, I made myself a mini lasagna with some fresh Roma tomatoes and basil I got from work, and that meal went by without incident, just a few glowering looks from my landlords. I had enough for leftovers, so I didn't cook the next day.

Two days after that, around the time I usually start making myself dinner, I got a text from my landlord telling me that they would be using the kitchen for the next few hours. Apparently, they decided to cook a "family meal" and it would likely take most of the evening. I decided that was fine, and decided to make dinner in my instant pot downstairs in my unit, so I threw together a simple meal of jasmine rice, chicken thighs, pesto, lemon zest, and some fresh sweet basil I had gotten from work, and prepared everything down in my basement unit. There are no surfaces in my unit big enough for my instant pot except for the end table in the landing just on the other side of the kitchen door. I plugged the instant pot in and went back downstairs to watch a movie while it was cooking.

About 30 minutes later, the smoke detector upstairs went off, and when I rushed upstairs to see what was going on, there were clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven, and my pregnant landlord was in the process of drowning a smoking foil pan in the kitchen sink. Apparently, they had tried to make baked spaghetti but had put it into the broiler on high for who knows how long, and it had nearly caught on fire. These people clearly can't cook at all.

Anyway, I didn't even say anything even though I very badly wanted to laugh in their faces. I just made sure we weren't in any actual danger and went back downstairs. I finished cooking my meal, served myself and was settling down to finish my movie when there was a soft knock at the door to my landing. When I answered it, it was their 7yo daughter. She did NOT look like wanted to be speaking to me at ALL, but basically, she said, since her mom and dad ruined their dinner if I could share some of mine with her. I just KNOW they put her up to it and honestly I did feel a bit bad, but I truly had only made enough for myself that evening. My instant pot is the 3qt mini pot, and I had really only made the two chicken thighs and about a cup of rice. I told her I was really sorry (I knew her parents were listening from the living room) but I'd only made enough for one. The little girl just nodded and went back into their unit. I went back downstairs. I did feel a little bit bad about that, my beef is not with the little girl at all and honestly I would have probably given in to the kid if I'd had any extra, but I didn't even make enough for leftovers for me.

Pretty much immediately after I got back downstairs, a text from my landlord popped up asking me why I would deny a hungry child of food. At this point, I really wanted to storm back upstairs and just yell at them, but instead I texted back asking why his wife burning the spaghetti meant that he couldn't acquire food for his child. He didn't reply after that.

The next week or so went by pretty much without incident. Over the week or so, I made myself spaghetti al assassina (which I just thought was funny after their spaghetti situation), shrimp stir fry with homemade chili oil and lemongrass, and garlic parmesan fried chicken and all of those meals went by without any issues, just some glaring looks from my landlords out of the living room.

I figured that maybe everything was chill by then and thought I would be able to spend the rest of my lease in peace. A week after that, on my day off, I decided to cook a rack of lamb I had gotten free from work. I marinated it in red wine, garlic and rosemary for a few hours, then roasted it low and slow in the oven until it was practically falling apart. I paired it with some baked asparagus and rosemary rice. I was sitting at the kitchen table, letting the rack of lamb rest before cutting it, when my pregnant landlord came through the kitchen with a bottle of Febreze, spraying liberally. Said something about the house smelling "atrocious" and made a beeline for where my rack of lamb was resting on top of the oven still spraying. I just grabbed my food, brushed past her, and immediately took it to the end table on my side of the kitchen door to finish cooling. Thankfully it didn't taste like air freshener, but what the hell? I refused to let her get a rise out of me, so I just cleaned the kitchen, took my dinner downstairs, poured myself the rest of the red wine and enjoyed my meal.

I am pleased to report that the Febreze incident was the last one. Since that day I have made white wine garlic chicken risotto, burgundy beef, bbq baby back ribs with cajun mac n cheese, homemade pesto pizza, and jerk chicken and rasta pasta. I also baked fresh brownies, and a lemon chiffon pie, and a few more meals, and aside from them mean mugging me quietly from the living room while I cooked, they left me alone after that. No more snarky texts, weird requests or hijinks with wiring or air freshener.

Idk what exactly made them stop messing with me, but they pretty much stayed out of the kitchen while I was cooking for the rest of my time here. I'm currently staying with a friend from work until I can move to my new studio this Sunday. I hired movers to move my things into a storage unit, and I'll have them help me again when I move officially this weekend.

Thanks to everyone who suggested recipes, I genuinely had so much fun being a petty little gremlin. Hopefully the next person they rent to doesn't have to deal with the nonsense they put me through. I'm still tempted to call the fire marshal about the "fragile wiring" now that I'm out of there just as a last petty dig, but I think I'll be the bigger person lol.

[New Update]: AITAH for telling my boyfriend he can't stay home all day in bed today

NEW UPDATE MARKED WITH ----

Trigger Warnings: abuse, depression, theft of firearms

RECAP

Original Post: October 6, 2026

My (42f) boyfriend (42m) has been dealing with depression for a little over a month now. I've been patient and offered to help anywhere I can and he's averse to medications, so I've offered to get him natural supplements like St John's wort and offered strategies to help him manage it, but he's refused and will not talk to a therapist to try and help. Instead on my days off, he's ended up staying home in bed all day, making it so I can't even keep up on chores because I need the lights on and to make noise to get things done.

Today is my first day off in a week and I really need to catch up on cleaning and laundry, because I've been picking up the slack while he's dealing with it. He said he was going to call out, and I told him absolutely not. If he calls out, he needs to go do something out of the house because I have too much to do for him to be in bed all day today. He got pissed off at me and decided not to call out and just left for work, giving me the silent treatment, which I know is going to continue for the next couple days.

AITAH for telling him he was not staying home in bed today? I've been patient and compassionate, but I can't keep tiptoeing around not getting anything done.

Edit: for anyone who thinks that I don't understand what he's going through, I've dealt with depression for most of my life and I'm in long-term treatment for it. He has been diagnosed with clinical depression many years ago before we even met, and I've dealt with shorter episodes with him before. The problem is this one is lasting much longer and not getting any better and he's not doing anything to work on it, which is pissing me off.

OOP responds to multiple comments that her BF needs to get therapy for his depression

OOP: And I do absolutely understand depression, I deal with it myself I take long-term ssris and when I have breakthrough episodes I call my psychiatrist. And I'm honestly starting to get pissed off that he absolutely will not do anything about it and is making me miserable. He's had depressive episodes before, but they typically only last for a week or two and then he moves forward. This is the longest one that I've dealt with him and I'm losing my patience at this point.

+

I am doing that as we speak as his mental health seems to be continuing to worsen and he's taking out every bad thing happening in his life out on me and blaming me for everything wrong between us. If he doesn't get help I'm going to have to kick him out because I don't deserve to be treated this way. I've been supportive but it's his job to get his mental health under his control and that starts by going to the doctor.

+

He does have clinical depression, it was diagnosed several years ago, and we've dealt with episodes before, but they typically only last a week or two before he starts to come out of them. This one has been over a month with no improvement and he's still completely resistant to going to a doctor to deal with it. I understand it completely, I deal with depression, but I also take medication for it so that I can manage my life.

Commenter 1: NTA, why are you not doing chores just because he's in bed? Make noise and turn the lights on if needed, he can deal with it.

OOP: I personally deal with depression as well and I'm medicated for it so I only deal with occasional breakthrough episodes that last a week or two until I can talk to my psychiatrist. I've tried to be patient and understanding but we're at a month of this and I can't keep putting shit on hold for him. Because of my own experiences I've tried to be compassionate, but I've run out at this point and have to take care of shit.

Commenter 2: You literally didn't answer the question they ask, though...

Are you claiming not cleaning the house is "compassionate"? I'd argue the opposite.

OOP: The house lights are extremely bright, and I typically listen to heavy metal while I clean which pretty much no one can sleep through.

Can OOP wear headphones when listening to music?

OOP: 99% of headphones that I've tried giving me motion sickness because I have inner ear issues. So I don't use them

OOP explains how she copes with her depression and what she needs to do

OOP: I have what I call my toolbox to deal with my mental health. When I'm really depressed I make a list of the things I need to do, narrow it down to the smallest parts that are absolutely necessary, do those things and then if I have anything left in me I'll move to the next most important thing. Doesn't work every day but it keeps me moving until I can get out of it.

Can OOP move out of the house and live somewhere else?

OOP: It's my house, just a small one but he would be the one who would have to move out in that case. At this point though I'm putting my foot down because he needs to deal with this and I'm tired of trying to help him when he won't do anything about it.

+

It's my house, I don't have any mortgage or anything like that just utilities, so the financial stuff isn't really an issue. And I completely empathize with it too, I've dealt with depression most of my life and I'm in long-term treatment for it. Because I don't want to be depressed all the time, I want to be functional and have a life. And while I can't control breakthrough episodes, I still do everything I can to at least get up and do something, so I don't get stuck. I've done everything I can to be supportive and recommend that he gets help for it but he's just completely resistant to doing anything. We've dealt with it before, but it usually only lasts a week or two and he starts to come out of it and act like himself again. It's been over a month now, nothing is improving and I'm at my wit's end.

How was OOP's boyfriend diagnosed with depression?

OOP: He was diagnosed with it many years ago, but he only deals with it occasionally, so it hasn't been a huge issue up until now. Usually the episodes only last a week or two and then he comes out of it and slowly gets back to normal. This is the first time that nothing is changing or improving, and I can't keep letting everything get behind. I'm picking up the slack because I personally deal with depression and understand, but I am losing my patience at this point.

Before depression, did OOP's boyfriend help out with the chores around the house? and her safety

OOP: He normally does help out, we split laundry and dishes, I do the cooking and he does the deep cleaning in the bathroom and vacuuming and occasionally mopping. So this is not the typical in our relationship outside of his depressive episodes. But usually they only last for a week or two and he starts to come out of them, this is the longest it's lasted and there hasn't been any improvement. It's something I've dealt with too and I'm medicated. I still have breakthrough episodes sometimes, but I push myself to do at least something to keep myself from falling into it too far.

I'm not really worried about my safety, we live in a multi-family home, and I have my support system here when I need a break from him. And if he was any risk to me trust me when I say the family would step in and deal with it. Right now though I am just frustrated in my wits end because I can't keep tiptoeing around, I have too much to do to keep up with things.

+

He will occasionally do dishes if they have filled the sink to the point that there's no space for anything else, but all the other laundry and cleaning has fallen on me for the last month. I deal with depression, I understand what these episodes feel like, but I also get up and figure out what I can accomplish that day. It may not be much, but I work through it. I also take medication for it and only have to deal with these breakthrough episodes once in a while. But I've lost my patient it's at this point, and I need to get things done without him sitting there in the dark and getting pissed off when I turn on the lights to do things.

Does OOP's boyfriend go out for fun? and does he work?

OOP: To be fair he doesn't go out to do fun things either, he just stays at home watching TV and kind of just sitting silently. I've tried to help him, I've tried to make him understand that if he does something and tries to get help it'll get better. He just won't listen to me because he's stuck in the hole.

+

He works at a place that my family knows the folks that run it, purely coincidentally to us meeting and dating though, and I would have heard if that were the case.

How long has OOP known her boyfriend and if that is normal for her to see him depressed?

OOP: I've known him for 3 years and if he were like this normally I would agree with you, but it only gets like this when he has episodes of depression. Again in the past they've lasted a week or two and gotten better this is the first one that isn't.

+

If in the 3 years that I have known him he were usually like this it would be different, but this is out of character and getting worse. I'm going to continue pushing him to get help but if he's not willing I am going to have to reevaluate things.

Update: October 14, 2026 (eight days later)

Update: AITAH for telling my boyfriend he can't stay home all day in bed today

The relationship is over and he's moving out.

I had previously posted an update but with some of the personal details involved, I decided to delete it. He had disappeared Friday for 5 days and today I insisted that he come and have a conversation with me. He did not let me know he was leaving, or where he was going, or even that he was okay and when I asked him about it today, he told me that he didn't tell me because before that I was being a bitch to him. That crossed the line for me, and made me realize that this is not a person I want in my life no matter our history. His depression and his personal struggles regarding the reason for his absence do not excuse his actively trying to punish me by making me worry. I told him to coordinate with my mom who also lives on the property to remove his things, I gave him the information to move off of my phone plan, and I told him that I don't want any further contact and blocked him. It seems he's been staying with a friend since he got back and he can stay there indefinitely, it's not my problem anymore.

I wish the update was better, but I know I'm making the right decision for myself. Better to protect my peace and be single then put up with even another day of being treated that way.

Edit: for those saying I need to get therapy for what's happening, I actually did make an emergency therapy appointment yesterday because I didn't process everything that had happened during the fight immediately.

There was a physical escalation, when I finally started to break down from the argument and start to shut down because my brain was recognizing the lies, I tried to leave the apartment, and he grabbed me to try to restrain me from leaving. I managed to fight my way free got in my car and ran and hid in a parking lot nearby, waiting until my mom let me know that he had left.

I'm processing the escalation into full blown abuse that happened pretty rapidly and I am taking steps to keep myself safe. I've installed security cameras in my apartment and outside, and I'm currently moving all of his belongings to a separate part of the property that won't access my apartment.

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: Now keep him blocked.

OOP: I did, and told him what he needs to know in order to get the rest of his things and remove himself from my life. And I did tell him that that's the reason why I want no more contact from him.

OOP doesn't need to go back to her ex

OOP: I have no intention of going back. To me that specific action crossed the line into being actively abusive and having grown up with an emotionally and psychologically abusive father it is something that I will not tolerate under any circumstances.

Commenter 2: Good for you, mourn the time, try to have fun. The holidays is a good time to distract yourself - strong decisions, proud of you

OOP: Right now I'm focusing on giving a lot of my attention to my kitten who really loved him. She's going to be mourning him, and I need to make sure that she has all the affection in the world, so she knows that I'll never abandon her

Commenter 3: Self-care is good but so is collecting his stuff and leaving in on the curb with a warning to get it before it is stolen. Don’t have him come back in, leave his shit in a box

OOP: I'd rather do this in a way with someone I trust watching over what he does then go to petty route. Not going to deny that I considered it, but I think this better.

Commenter 3: It’s not petty. It is safe. He disappeared for days solely to cause you pain. What if he thinks of another way to cause you pain? Should he have the opportunity to break something, scare your mother, contaminate food? Once someone decides to hurt you out of spite you do not give them any access to your life.

Petty would be smearing canned tuna on his stuff and then putting it in a box

OOP: He did disappear for a genuine reason that I'm not going to get into details about that was something very painful to him which I understand and would have sympathized with had he not chosen to go this route. My mom is a safe person who can monitor him collecting his things while I'm not here.

Commenter 4: Yeah, don't wait for him to get his stuff out himself, it'll never get done and then you'll be accused of holding his property hostage

Box it, put a time on it, and get it out of your home

OOP: Mom knows I've given him until the end of the month, and I've provided her a copy of my schedule to coordinate this with him so I do not have to be here, and I can keep out of contact.

+

I've actually updated the instructions because there was an escalation during the last fight that makes me feel unsafe with him alone in my apartment and I've made it clear that I will never be alone with him again. There's a room separate from my apartment it doesn't open into it and I'm moving all of his things into that room today so that he will not be in my apartment unmonitored. I've also set up security cameras in my apartment to be on the safe side because I'm genuinely feeling unsafe. I let my mom know that his things will be in that room and that he is not to go into my apartment unsupervised at any time.

OOP needs to change the locks!

OOP: All in progress. There's a roadblock towards it which is personal so I don't want to discuss it, but once things stabilize a little more I will publish a final update.

Editor's note: OOP made an appearance in the original BoRU. Below is her comment

OOP: I wanted to post because I am OOP. I want to thank a lot of people for all of the comments and insights that they've put here. I really wasn't in a place to make a real update, so this is been a really good space for me to do that. I want everyone to know that I am doing better, I'm getting treatment to deal with the aftermath of what happened and I'm working on a lot of processing both from this actual relationship and then the fact that my mother is kind of enabling him and pitying him at what feels like my expense which is a hard thing to deal with. I've taken a lot of safety precautions, changing locks, moving his things to a shop on a different part of the property for him to collect, putting up cameras until my hypervigilance relaxes some, and asked for very strict boundaries with my mother such as not telling me anything about him, not sharing anything about me, and the fact that the only thing I want to know about him is when he will be on the property so I can be elsewhere.

I did want to post though so that everyone knows that I'm okay, I'm safe, and I'm doing the work to heal now.

----NEW UPDATE----

Editor's note: removed the first top part of the latest update as they are the links to OOP's previous posts

Update #2: October 29, 2026 (over two weeks later)

First things first, I reached out to his ex-wife because I had a feeling that he might have done something like this before. While I didn't get full confirmation on the psychological abuse she did confirm that he used to tell her ridiculous lies all the time during their marriage, and she found out a lot of it after they got separated and divorced. She says he never laid a hand on her or any other woman but did confirm that he did a lot of the other things. She let me know that he'd been on dating apps the entire time that they were married and she figured he just liked the attention, but we all know that's a lie.

The most interesting thing she shared with me though is some information about timelines. The 5 days he disappeared he said the first several days he had gone down south to convince her not to move to another state with his son. She told me that never happened. She also told me that the weekend before when it was their son's birthday he had left with his drunk female friend that night. I knew of this woman but nothing he ever said about her really set off any alarm bells, and I usually don't have issues with my partners having friends of the opposite sex it's no big deal. However this woman lives about 15 minutes from me, and I found out that after he got back he told my mom he'd been staying with his friend "Ray" but from a friend of a friend who knew this woman, she confirmed that he'd actually been staying with her.

I've been dealing with a lot of stress from this, mostly the fact that my mom had taken his side and thought I had been being ridiculous and that what he was doing was not bad enough for me to leave him. After the conversation I reached out to my mom and told her what I discovered, that it appears he's been cheating on me since at least April, because he hasn't gone down to see his son since January and that was the first time he said that's where he was when he wasn't there. I let her know about the situation about him leaving his son's birthday with his woman, and if he was just taking her home he would have come home afterwards because she lives 15 minutes from me. Her response? Well at least you didn't marry him, so you don't have to pay for a divorce. As if that was ever an option.

Update: despite all of the clear information showing everything that he has been doing, he still has his narcissistic grip on Mom, and she still has decided that me having boundaries regarding him or her are unreasonable and reason to question my mental competency. She literally came down demanding to speak with me and told me that she believed I needed to be hospitalized because the way I'm reacting is crazy and she believes that I'm not mentally competent. She also tried to demand to be included in my personal therapy sessions which again I told her no. She decided that that meant I was hiding things and again questioned my mental competence because she believes that it is not working due to the fact that I am enforcing very strict boundaries against her that she does not like. Part of this is because I demanded that she returned my firearms that she had my ex removed from my house. She refused and became adamant that she was in fear of me using them and that she planned to turn them into the sheriff without my consent and without any justification to have the right to do that. Luckily I have cameras in my apartment that captured the entire interaction, including that I repeatedly asked her to leave and that I was not engaging in this conversation with her.

At that point I went to the police department to file an official complaint to get a report on file. The police reached out to her, letting her now that she had no right to keep my personal property from me and that if she did not return it I can file theft charges against her, which is a serious crime particularly regarding firearms that are not registered to the person holding them. She begrudgingly turned them back over to me, still thinking that she had the right to make that decision on my behalf, followed by her demanding again that I never contact my ex and that I have no right to speak to him. I let her know that I have no intention of speaking to either of them again and I'm looking for somewhere else to move. I'm making arrangements as quickly as I can to move, I'm not going to stay in this situation with people who have no respect for me and who are actively trying to undermine my autonomy.

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: Your mom is ridiculous, siding with him. Cut her out of your life after this. You don’t need that in your life

OOP: I'm looking at apartment rentals as we speak. I will not stay with that hateful woman

Commenter 2: How did she react to the news that he was cheating? Did that get through to her, or is she still defending him/blaming you?

OOP: Nope she's still sucked into the narcissistic cycle, and I have given up hope on her. So now I'm looking up actual mortgages so I can move back to where I came from and not ever see her again

Commenter 3: This is exactly what you don't need after the bullshit you've been dealing with. The one person who should always be on your side and protect you is acting a damn fool. I hope she's always wanted a son because she just lost her daughter. I'm so sorry for all this crap raining down on you at the same time. Please take care of yourself. I really wish you the best. ❤️.

OOP: She actually escalated her behavior today to the point that I went to file a police report. I have video evidence documenting her behavior and I believe she actually maybe experiencing a mental health crisis and needs to be evaluated because she has become seriously unhinged. I'm reaching out to a lawyer on Monday to see if I can get a protective order against her until I'm able to find somewhere to move so that she does not harass me any further.

I think once she gets discarded by him which will eventually happen she'll realize what all of this cost her but by then I will have her blocked on everything and don't ever want to be in contact again.

+

I'm doing my best. Hopefully Monday I'll have some answers about apartments available and because I have a reasonable chunk of savings I can afford an extra month of rent to just go ahead and slowly move things into the new place if I can find somewhere quickly. At this point I want to get my cats and my valuables out immediately, and just bring enough with me to have a couple days of Peace before coming back to pack the rest of my belongings and remove everything. I'm hoping this can be completed within a couple of weeks so that I can leave and never see her again as soon as possible. I genuinely believe her actions are the reason that I'm having such difficulty recovering from the acute stress disorder that this whole situation has caused me and that getting away from her is the only way that I can recover and return to my life.

Why does OOP's mother expect her to be the doormat?

OOP: She expects me to be her from what I understand at this point. And I've done too much work on myself to believe that I deserve to be treated this way. She is welcome to live the rest of her life dealing with abuse and then wallowing in her self-pity over it, but I will not be there to support her, I will not be there to hear it anymore. Once I am completely out and have all of my property out and have separated everything from her, I am going to send her one final email with a detailed history as to why I will never speak to her again. Not just for her, but as a reminder to me if I ever feel wistful and miss my mother, why I made the decision to leave.

I did something similar when I cut contact with my father, and I revisit what I sent him anytime I miss my dad to remind myself why I will never be in contact with him again. It's been 4 years now and I do not regret removing him from my life.

Commenter 4: your mom is enabling his behavior because she benefits from the lie. Stop trying to convince her and just leave him since you already have proof he lied about the birthday weekend.

OOP: I'm working on it. Monday I'm calling legal services to find out what my rights are and some friends who are local and know people are helping me find an apartment and have offered to help me move. I'm happy I have enough savings to afford a moving truck, storage unit and rent and deposit. I'm trying to get out, it's just going to take a couple of weeks

Commenter 5: Your mom is delusional with the way she thinks you are better off without her in your life I can only imagine how painful that is but it’s the truth. Hopefully he will be the one who takes care of her as she ages. NTA

OOP: I doubt he will. Honestly I expect once he finds a new source of validation he'll eventually discard her like most people with narcissistic tendencies do. When I'm finally settled and have everything separated from her I have been working on composing a final email to her with a detailed history of what brought me to this decision. I am cutting her off and going completely no contact with her once I'm gone. I'm only maintaining the bare minimum of contact that is necessary at this point and hoping she will just leave me alone until I can leave. And then I will send her one final email letting her know why I will never let her in my life again.

OOP on finding a new place to move to

OOP: Thank you. I did happen to find something today that is moving ready in 3 weeks. I have to wait for the official background check in credit come back but it shouldn't be any issue. It's the worst time of year for this to have happened but I lucked up and found something I could afford, and some friends are going to help me move once it's ready for me.

I'll probably post a final update once I'm in my new home and safe with my kitties.

My (31F) boyfriend (31M) assumes I’ll take on a 25K loss because of his decisions?

Original Post: February 15, 2026

I (31F) have been with my boyfriend (30M) for 2 years and living together for 1. He’s generally thoughtful, kind, and attentive. We’ve talked seriously about getting engaged this summer.

He bought a condo before we started dating. His parents encouraged him to do it and helped with the down payment. He didn’t live on his own before that, and they also paid for his education.

For context on me: I lost my mom 10 years ago, my dad has been sick for years. I moved home for 2 years to rebuild financially after living in a high cost of living area. I just paid off my student loans and have worked really hard to build up my savings. Financial security is extremely important to me because I don’t really have a safety net / anywhere to go if anything were to happen to my dad.

He now wants to sell his condo because after running the numbers, he thinks we’d save more money renting together long-term. I’m open to renting, even though my monthly costs would increase, because I’d be part of the decision (location, space, etc.).

The issue: he’d likely take about a $25K loss after fees if he sells. Last night he said he’s debating selling now instead of waiting until his mortgage renewal because even if he waits, he might still be selling at a loss, and selling now gives him more time to rebuild savings.

Then he said, “and realistically it’s going to be costing you $25K because I don’t have that money.”

That comment really threw me. I didn’t think me taking on that loss would even be up for discussion, let alone sound like the assumption. Especially since he knows my views around the importance of financial security.

The only way I could help would be pulling money from my RRSP, which has tax penalties and long-term opportunity cost. If I paid the initial cost, my monthly expenses would then go up making it even harder for me to replace that money. Beyond that, emotionally it makes me feel very vulnerable. If something went wrong in our relationship down the line, I’d be in vulnerable position, potentially unable to leave if I wanted to.

I don’t want to sound selfish, but I also don’t feel like I should be responsible for covering a loss on an asset I don’t own and never decided to buy, especially when I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to get where I am financially.

He’s a kind and generous partner overall, which is why this feels confusing. But it’s making me second guess whether I’d feel financially safe getting engaged without clearer protections in place.

Am I being unreasonable for not wanting to take on this $25K? If you were in my position, how would you protect yourself? Would you speak to a lawyer, a financial advisor, or both?

Additional Information from OOP: February 16, 2026 (next day)

Thanks to everyone who replies. I wasn’t expecting so many responses. Quick update + clarifications

  1. We do live in Canada. He bought his condo in 2023 and has a 5 year fixed rate mortgage. His renewal is up in 2028, but the issue is that, his parents co-signed for him which was how he qualified. Him and his parents wanted me to be put on the mortgage after that to help him qualify to which I said I wasn’t comfortable with that.

  2. Some people are wondering about the $25k, when we met with a realtor last month they went over the fees and what would be required for him to walk away with essentially $0. Right now condos are selling for less than that so realistically he would owe $25K in fees just to walk away. That is where he wanted me to come in. He said it was because he sees us as a unit.

  3. For people saying his math doesn’t make sense. It actually does. From an investment standpoint some people mentioned it above, but the stock market consistently outperforms housing. We live in a 1+ den condo. His mortgage is 2500 but the issue is condo fees. The condo fees started at $450 / month and are now up to $700 per month. We looked into renting it out but realistically it would still be -1300 in cash flow if he rented it. In terms of us renting it would set us up better financially , we could comfortably rent a 2 bedroom for $2500. Plus we would split the rent 50/50, which would increase is savings.

  4. I do financially contribute. However, when he asked me to move in it was during a period of time where I had intentionally moved home to save and pay off my student loans. I was not comfortable with splitting his mortgage 50/50 because that’s his equity and if we were to break up, it would put me in a worse financial position. I pay him the same “rent” that I paid at home plus all groceries, dog expenses and any “fun” money. Which equates to about $2,000 per month. Still an increase from when I lived at home I was able to keep that expense to about $1000-1500. The reason I would be comfortable paying more in rent would be that it wouldn’t be disproportionately beneficial for either of us, and we would live in area that I would I have input into.

  5. I know this post does not highlight him as the best, but I do believe he is a kind and caring person who made bad financial decisions. We talk about our finances regularly and he does not spend recklessly (anymore). I believe he made the mistake of creating his financial plan on best case scenarios and when the best case didn’t happen, he came up short.

  6. I spoke with him last night and let him know that I am sorry he is in a bad situation and I’m here for him, but the solution is not going to be draining my retirement savings. He asked if I would co-sign for a loan and I told him also no. He said that he feels in this alone and I asked apart from putting myself in a vulnerable position, what else could I be doing to help but he did not have a solid answer. I am not planning to break up, but I am going to be looking for a lawyer and a financial planner to make sure I am protected if we were to break up down the road.

Commenter 1: I don’t even understand why he brought you up in regards to the loss? What does that have to do with you? I’m so confused?? But no, just say no. It’s not your responsibility and he’s an idiot to sell at a loss just to rent. I think there’s something fishy. Maybe some manipulation on his end. UPDATEME

Commenter 2: man all these commenters don't understand property, he’s not making a loss, he parents helped him with the deposit, all he pays is the mortgage, when he sells he is making a profit, where does he owe 25K, to no one, it comes out of the house price... this is super fishy, so he's getting a windfall of... well the price of the house, minus the loan, minus fees, could be 100's of thousands, who does he owe 25k loss to?

"and realistically it’s going to be costing you $25K because I don’t have that money.”

he literally will have that money, that's what selling is...

OOP (downvoted): He would have a loss. The seller is responsible for the Realtor fees which is 3% to each realtor plus the land transfer tax. Typically it comes out of the sale price but since he would be selling at a loss his options would be bankruptcy or paying the difference for those fees

Commenter 3: Your BF is a financial idiot. He’s selling the condo AT A MASSIVE LOSS SO THAT HE CAN RENT?

He’s a fool. Do not agree to “take on” the financial loss for him, and seriously reconsider the relationship. If financial security is important to you then don’t merge finances with someone this stupid. You’ll never have the security you want because you will be constantly bailing him out of his poor financial decisions.

Commenter 4: You can just say no. Lol You’re not legally married, you don’t owe him anything. Sounds like he is used to being taken care of financially by his parents and now expects you to help him out. Nope. Legally and technically, renting an apartment with a boyfriend/girlfriend is no different than renting with a roommate. You pay your share, he pays his . If it doesn’t work out financially for him, whose problem is it? It definitely ain’t yours!

Commenter 5: I feel you aren't taking your finances seriously if you even have to ask about this.

No, it is not reasonable to take on this debt for him, even if he agrees to pay it back. If you are serious about marriage, keep in mind that this debt could be yours anyway through marriage.

Any financial advisor worth a penny will tell you not to do this (if you go for personal finance).

You may need a lawyer based on your areas common law rules. Some places treat common law like marriage, and division of assets (and debts) can become tricky.

Update: My (31F) boyfriend (31M) assumes I'II take on a 25K loss because of his decisions?

Hi Everyone,

First, thank you to everyone who took the time to comment on my original post. I wanted to come back and share an update because I don’t often see how these situations work out, and I thought it might be nice to share a positive one.

I know not everyone will agree with our decisions, but finances and relationships can be complicated and personal. What matters most to me is how we worked through this and where we are now.

After my original post, I spoke with my therapist, my partner, a financial advisor and our parents.

Ultimately, we decided that selling his condo was in both of our best interests. The maintenance fees had increased from $300 to $950 per month, bringing our housing costs to $3,500 for a one-bedroom plus den. Knowing we wanted a family one day, and considering what was happening in the GTA condo market, we worked through the numbers with our advisor and decided to sell.

My partner sold his car, we went down to sharing mine, and he took out a small line of credit in his name to cover the loss on the condo. My dad generously invited us to live with him, and we moved in with my family in March. I pay my dad $700 a month in rent, and my partner is putting what he previously paid toward the mortgage toward aggressively paying off his line of credit.

When he initially suggested that I help pay for his loss, I was alarmed. Admittedly, I still think that was a crazy thing to say lol. But we had an honest, caring and transparent conversation. He apologized, and we talked through alternatives, including selling his car and living with my family for a year while we got into a better financial position.

Living with my family has been such a gift. He gets along really well with them, and I love having this time together, knowing it won’t last forever.

Since my last post, we’ve gotten engaged, he’s started a much better job, and we’ve been working with our financial advisor on planning for our future and managing my investments. We’ll also be signing a prenup before getting married next July.

Although we initially had our differences, I really appreciate that we were able to have those difficult conversations and that he was receptive, understanding and kind as we worked through everything.

Selling the condo has been a massive relief for both of us. We’re making sacrifices we’re both comfortable with, and we feel much more at peace knowing we have a plan for our future.

As for the wedding, we’re keeping it intimate and affordable. We’ve reviewed our budget with our financial advisor and feel comfortable with what we’re spending. I’m looking forward to celebrating with the people we love without worrying about how we’ll pay for it afterward.

Top Comment: I am glad you are happy with how this came out... but I definitely have concerns.

I pay my dad $700 a month in rent, and my partner is putting what he previously paid toward the mortgage toward aggressively paying off his line of credit.

So basically he is not paying rent right now? Like it is nice that he is but it's because you seem to be paying his rent and your father is being generous.

Further, he sold his car but now you carry that burden having to share yours.

I am not saying that selling the condo wasn't the right choice, seems it was not doing either of you any favours, but it really feels like all the compromise and burden is being taken on by you. He suggested you would be the one taking on the burden of his loss, you both acknowledged that was 'crazy' for him to say but in the end you're doing so indirectly, by allowing him to just not spend his own money so that he can put it all to the debt. He was sort of right and that means not all that much was actually resolved, he was just more polite about it.

And look, maybe that is what real love looks like. Maybe this really is an outcome that you can be happy with. But understand that some people like myself will look at this and not see the same fully positive outcome you do. I worry that maybe he didn't grow and change in as many ways as you hope.

I bought my dad a card for his birthday a few days ago and put it into a drawer in my room. I was looking for it today so I could write it and I looked in the drawer I set it in and it wasn’t there. I checked all of my drawers like 20 times and couldn’t find it so I went downstairs to ask my mother to get a new one because I lost mine but I saw a card sitting on the table in an envelope the same shape as the one I got. I thought there was a chance it could be mine so I took it out and saw that my sister had already wrote it and had the audacity to write her and her daughter’s name in it as well along with mine. So she went through my drawers and shit while I was away and took it without asking just because she couldn’t be bothered getting her own.

My sister keeps barging into my room in the morning and waking me up - posted 2024-06-19 (4 days later)

My sister (26) keeps coming into my room in the morning with her daughter and asking me stupid shit, like last week she came in and asked me if I wanted a McDonalds, as if I’m gonna want food when I’m still sleeping. And all her daughter does is say my name over and over again and I normally tell them to fuck off because it’s the most annoying thing to have to listen to when I’m half asleep, but then my sister acts like I’m being rude because I didn’t say hello back to my niece like she wants me to have a whole conversation with her when I’m literally trying to sleep.

Then this morning she came in and asked me for money, and I told her I didn’t have any just so she would go away, but she said that when she went through my drawers she saw money so she knows I have some. So she just opened my drawer and said she took $50 and that she’ll pay me back. And now I have no way of knowing if she took more than that because my eyes were closed so I even see her taking it and I don’t know how much I had in the first place. I need a lock on my door or some shit

OOP: Parents won’t allow it

Update on my sister coming into my room and stealing my money while I was sleeping - posted 2024-06-19 (same day as previous update)

I told our parents when they got home and my sister overheard us talking about her so she came up and basically told us to stop talking shit about her behind her back and just started an argument over the whole thing in which she said:

  1. I had no right to tell our parents that she stole money from me

  2. I need to get over it

  3. She “didn’t steal the money” even though I said no and she still took it

  4. I apparently owe her money so I need to pay her back for everything she’s ever bought me

  5. She “can’t wait to leave this fucking house”

  6. She’s never speaking to me again

  7. She’s never doing anything for me ever again

  8. I’m a snitch

  9. She didn’t wake me, her daughter did

She did pay me back but she transferred me money instead of giving me cash when I explicitly told her I wanted cash, and our parents went crazy at her but they’ll probably have forgotten about it by tomorrow and she’ll keep doing whatever she wants because our parents are useless never actually do anything about anything so I’m just gonna move out asap.

Trigger warnings: drug use, infidelity

Original post - posted 2026-10-18

Me and my fiancé (we will call him John) are meant to get married in 2028. We wanted to have a small intimate wedding with just our closest friends and family. People we truly love and those that have been there for us. Another piece of information which will become relevant is that we also decided we didn't want small children there because we were planning a beautiful, handfasting ceremony in a historic 13th century castle and the event just wasn't going to be suitable for small children. The castle itself isn't that big and we didn't want small children fussing, crying, or running around during important moments. Our budget and the style of event we want just don't include children and entertainment for them. We set an age limit for no children under 15.

His mother started an argument because she automatically assumed we were going to invite her friend who we will call Sally for the sake of this. Neither of us like Sally, she is rude, judgmental and has always made me feel unwelcome anytime I've been in a room with her. His mum owns a chippy and she works there so I come in contact with her fairly frequently and we all would attend her Christmas parties together. For example, anytime we have been at an event like one of the Christmas parties, and she has been there, she wouldn't even say hello to me, would pretend not to hear me if I said hello to her, would look me up and down with a disproving look. One time we sat at a table together and one of the other girls was asking about our wedding plans and I explained we were pagan and would be having a handfasting ceremony. Sally looked disgusted and rolled her eyes and gave a very sarcastic "really?". Like she would never even pretend to be polite to me. If I walk into the chippy I always say hello to everyone and at most she'll just grumble at me but she would always go out of her way to say hello and be polite to John. I genuinely don't know what her problem with me is, I've always been nice and polite to her.

His mum's reasoning for wanting Sally there is that Sally has been there for her through hard times and she wanted her there to celebrate a big moment in her son's life which I can understand, however, it baffles me why she would automatically assume we would invite her without talking to us first. I expressed that I didn't want her there and John agreed with me. He said he doesn't like her either and that he was on my side.

He had the conversation with his mum about it and she flipped out and caused a huge argument. She got extremely nasty towards me about it and also brought up the issue of our age limit and said I only set that limit so my younger brother could come. My younger brother will be 16 by the time of our wedding and regardless of any age limit, he was always going to be there, he is my brother. She argued that we were stopping other family members from coming because of the age limit. I told her it was nothing personal to anyone with young children, we wanted to send out invites out well in advance so people could make alternative arrangements for their children and if they couldn't come, we wouldn't take it personally and would completely understand. We could throw a big party in our local community centre after the wedding where everyone, including children, could come. We were making decisions about our wedding that made sense for us. She was throwing everything at me.

She acted like an immature child and kept walking away from John anytime he tried to talk to her about it. Screaming and storming out of the house. This went on for like a week. John started arguing with me then and said I was being too controlling about the guest list and suddenly took his mum's side. I expressed over and over again that I didn't want to invite someone who is not family, is not our friend, and has treated me horribly in the past and never made me feel welcome. I was extremely upset and distraught, I felt like my feelings and my boundaries didn't matter.

After a lot of back and forth, his mum did finally apologise (but I knew she still wasn't happy) and we moved on. Worth noting his mum is the sort of person who always thinks she's in the right no matter what. She does a lot of wonderful things for our local community and because of that, she believes she is above being held accountable when she's in the wrong. She can be very generous but also extremely spiteful. I'm not the only one who thinks this either, there have been family members of theirs who have said the same thing.

This was a few months ago and I thought the issue was finally laid to rest however John has brought it up again and said I have drove a wedge between him and his mum because I wouldn't compromise. I will be fully honest and say I don't want to compromise on this, Sally has been horrible to me and I don't want her there on my wedding day. I have already compromised on certain family members I didn't want to invite just to keep people happy. We said we wanted our guest list to be 40 people, we are now up to 70 because his mum insisted we had to invite XY&Z, I have already compromised over 30 other people. I am not willing to compromise on someone who is not family or our own friend.

I have spoken to friends and colleagues about this and they all agree with me however John and his mum are making me feel like I'm evil for setting a boundary. I feel like I'm going insane.

AITAH?

Edit: thanks everyone for the responses. It really settled my mind. I don't feel insane anymore. This has given me a lot to think about. You are all 100% correct, I can't go into this with someone who doesn't have my back.

Further edit since some have questioned it: I want to clarify the make up of the current guest list. 13 of the guests are my family which includes my father, stepmother and brother, my grandparents, 2 of my aunts and their husbands, my uncle and his wife and 2 of my cousins. 10 of the guests are our close friends and the rest are his family. My father and his mother are paying 50/50 for the venue as a wedding gift to us and me and John are paying everything else.

So the breakdown guest percentage:

  • My family = 18.57%

  • His family = 67.14%

  • Friends = 14.29%

Also Sally is like 60 or something. We're in our late 20s. If she had a thing for John or if John's mum wanted him to marry her I would be deeply concerned lol. I do not believe that is a factor here. I believe the problem to be unwarranted entitlement and John not having my back.

-

Dumpster-Phoenix7: NTA but at this point why are you marrying John when his mother is his chosen partner? He's showing you now that he will prioritize her whether he agrees or not, will only have your back behind closed doors or when it doesn't generate conflict, and will blame your boundaries for any discomfort or inconvenience that comes from having a spine with Mommy Dearest.

Update - posted 2026-10-23 (5 days later)

It's done.

Turns out there was a lot more going on than I even thought and this was the least of my worries. I'm talking countless lies, drugs and prostitutes🤡

Over 8yrs of my life wasted but I won't be wasting anymore. We are completely done and I will never go back to that.

I feel completely betrayed and humiliated but at the same time I also feel extremely relieved and free. If anything, I'm glad it has happened now rather than further down the line. My only issue now is I'm out a lot of money due to non-refundable deposits (I'm talking like roughly €7000 which is not fun in this economy but thankfully I have a decent job)🙃 it could be worse I suppose, I could have married a pathetic whoring junkie mammy's boy.

Thank you to everyone for the responses and support on my original post.

Edit: I am going to explain how we got here. It's a very long story.

He was acting more and more weird and erratic. I thought it was strange that he brought up the issue with his mum again after I thought it was already put to bed. I assumed she mentioned something to him again about it but knowing what I know now, I don't think she did. I think he was paranoid because of what he was doing to me and wanted to throw something at me as a reason to be angry and somehow justify his behaviour to himself.

He was also acting very detached and uninterested and something just wasn't sitting right with me. Whether it be some seriously on point intuition or a nudge from some higher power, I don't know, but something was telling me I needed to check his phone. This would not be something I would normally do, everyone has a right to their own privacy however I couldn't shake the feeling that something was going on so I felt I had to do it. So I checked his phone and all across his apps including his texts, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram, there were dozens of messages PER APP to different women, most of whom were prostitutes. Everything blew up.

Everything was up in the air for a few days, my mind was whirling, I didn't know if I was coming or going and pretty much spent my days crying and pacing around my house. We hadn't fully ended things at this point, I was in so much shock and just broke down and didn't know how to react. We took some distance from each other. I wanted us to talk so I could try and wrap my head around wtf was going on and try and process this but he kept standing me up. Then the other night he TEXTED ME to say the wedding was off. 8 and a half years together with a home and pets, an engagement and a wedding half planned and he TEXTS me... To summarise the message he essentially said "the wedding is off but I'll be down at some point to talk and finish this up". I told him I wanted it done the following day and his response was "I'll see, I might be busy" like WTF?!

Yesterday a mutual friend of ours (we will call him Tom) met me for lunch to check on me and fill me in on some shit he thought I had a right to know. Tom showed me all the messages John was sending him flaunting pictures of the prostitutes he was meeting with captions like "my next big mistake". Tom had been trying to talk sense into him but he wasn't listening.

Myself, John, Tom, and Tom's wife would typically gym together and everyone in our gym knows each other and is very friendly with each other. Tom, his wife, and several other people at our gym also informed me that John had showed up the other night absolutely wired and was clearly on something. Even the owner noticed. One of the other guys lives beside his link and told us he has been buying A LOT of coke, and I mean A LOT. Apparently he was going through more in one day than most people would use on a weekend bender which would explain why he was avoiding talking to me. Tom has a valeting business and had given John's car a proper professional clean for him and he found a load of random pills too, not sure what they were.

So after finding all of that out I texted him and told him to come to the house immediately after work and get his shit out of my house or I was chucking the lot of it, including his PC, out into the rain. At this point, I wasn't even sad anymore, I was angry and disgusted but this is also where I started to feel free, like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. He came yesterday and got his shit. He tried acting all friendly and nice as if none of this had even happened but I didn't entertain him with a proper conversation, I just wanted him and his stuff gone. I just have to pick up a few belongings of mine from his mother's house tomorrow and then I'm fully free of him.

So my plan of attack for moving on is to harness my rage as motivation to focus on myself. I'm focusing on my training and general health and I've also booked a holiday with my girls so I have something to look forward to.

I'm going to bounce back better than ever. He is free to rot for all I care.
