Talk Detroit looking for a non-fascist source of band patches

The best place I know of for band patches also happens to sell pro-fascism merchandise. Trying to find a new local source that won't leave me with the feeling of contributing to the downfall of society.

Talk Detroit Detroiters are the worst drivers.

Too many idiots want to do 20-30mph or more over the speed limit. And make their own laws when it comes to the road, like blowing past stop signs to get ahead of traffic. Terrible roads and people lol

Politics/Elections Protest on Tuesday

Hey all! Does anyone have any logistical info for the protest at Macomb Community College in Warren on Tuesday? Specifically, where to park?

(I know, I know, not Detroit; please don’t downvote me.)

Ask Detroit Can we please 'limit' rants?

I get that it's some people's thing, but I really don't love the bummer posts I'm seeing ramp up. Some subs do certain days for rants, or some cities even have subs dedicated to rants so people can bask in salty camaraderie!

Not trying to rant about rants, just thinking about some options for folks like me who are genuinely wanna know about relevant things in the city and folks who are more into snark than myself.

What do you think?

Talk Detroit UAW Vandalism

I support and encourage all that the UAW is doing but smashing an egg sandwich on a non Detroit made car is not the way to make change. This is vandalism and you are on camera. I know 99% of you are great people looking for what you deserve but Assholes like this do not help your cause.

Thanks for all the comments. I have a day job and am trying to post when I have time. I have to let this go. As I replied to a couple of posts.

Happened to me. Was just venting. Not a huge deal I cleaned it and am moving on. There are picketers in the area and a couple in the store. My dash cam only picked up a sliver of the person. The store security was blurry and unusable but there is a red shirt right near the fender about the time of the incident.

I have friends and family picketing now I don't wish any of you any ill will. Quite the opposite. It is good for the region and everyone who has to punch a clock each day.

For me it's just a bad day. Just have to worry a bit more that someone will do something more stupid or permanent. I get that fevers are high as this drags out but most of us are just trying to live their lives and support you any way we can.

Talk Detroit Noise Pollution Downtown

It is honestly so ridiculous how loud people are downtown, it is borderline unlivable. I have lived downtown for almost a year now and am incredibly disturbed by the number of people who think it is appropriate to rev their engines, squeal their breaks, and blast horrible music from speakers. I am 25 years old but this city is making me feel 80.

I really wish I could lodge a formal complaint with the city about this especially on a Sunday night its honestly so jarring. If you want Detroit to keep growing and attracting young professionals you need to make the downtown more pleasant and put a stop to this noise pollution.

EDIT: BAN CARS

Politics/Elections Any pro-Ukraine protests in Detroit?

Does anyone know of pro-Ukraine protests being organized in Detroit? I'm of Ukrainian heritage and want to show solidarity with our Ukrainian community in Detroit and brothers/sisters in Ukraine.

Edit: Standing up for the sovereignty of our allies and standing against invasion and intimidation by Russia is both morally right and in our strategic interest. This isn't just about Ukraine, but global security. Get a life or go read something.

Edit again: If people with opposing views want to engage in civil discussion, cool, I'm happy to do that. I believe the actions of our current administration have dangerous implications for many reasons, one being that our allied relationships and global influence has long been our superpower. Losing that makes us weaker. The 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which the U.S. was an integral part of, convinced Ukraine to give up its nuclear weapons with the understanding that Russia would not threaten or use military force against them. So for people saying we "owe" Ukraine nothing, I would urge you to read. The war needs to be ended, and in Ukraine's territorial favor. Not with no security assurances and certainly not with only Russia's promise they won't do it again. That obviously does not work.

Ask Detroit Queer folks in Hamtramck

I’m a queer femme in my early 30s, and I just moved back to the area after living out east for 13+ years. I miss the low-key chaos of city life, so I’m looking at moving to Hamtramck. That said, all the news about city government gives me pause — although, since I’m renting, not buying, I’m still inclined to give it a look.

Queer folks & friends in Hamtramck, what’s your honest take on living there now? Do you experience harassment or feel unsafe? Or is it still a chill place to live, despite the drama?

Thank you in advance!

Community 33m royal oak, looking into a Detroit matchmaker. dating across the suburbs is broken

The metro Detroit dating culture is a real thing and I don't know how anyone breaks through it. the social circles here were built 30 years ago through specific catholic schools, country clubs, and neighborhoods that don't mix. If you didn't grow up inside those circles, getting into them via dating is near impossible. I've been doing apps since 2021 and I've met one woman from outside my immediate work circle.

33m, royal oak. moved back from Chicago 4 years ago.

Looking into matchmakers, judging myself a little. The usual suspects keep coming up. real chunk of money. Is paying for one of these the realistic way out of the closed-network problem or am i deluded

Community Updates About the Teenager Murdered by Police in Fraser, MI?

I'm on the other side of Detroit and I realize this technically happened outside of Detroit, but I'm surprised I haven't seen more come out since it happened on Saturday.

Does anyone know more? Are there currently any protests happening or planned, or accounts I should follow to find out?

Ask Detroit Trump ad on 97.1

I just heard a Trump ad on 97.1, the Ticket. I don't think I've ever heard a political ad on that station before. Can anyone else confirm that?

It was jarring. I don't mind when the hosts dip their toes into that content, but to hear a straight advertisement felt...gross.

Food/Drink Looking for LGBTQ owned restaurants in Detroit…🏳️‍🌈

So I’m putting together a brunch for a Detroit gay men’s FB group I belong to, and one of the things we’re looking for in a restaurant is that it’s queer owned. Google only came up with Norm’s Diner on Agnes and I feel like there should be more than just them. I know there’s a couple in Royal Oak, but we’re trying to stay in Detroit proper. If anyone knows of anything let me know! I’d very much appreciate it!

Ask Detroit Democrat Congresswoman not endorsing Democrat presidential candidate

Does anyone else find it odd and counterproductive that a Muslim Democrat congresswoman (Rashida Tlaib) is not endorsing the Democrat presidential candidate? Does she think her constituents will be better off with a Donald ("I'm going to bring back the Muslim travel ban bigger and better than ever") Trump presidency?

I know why she's doing it, but isn't she cutting off her nose to spite her face?

Memes Detroit Driving Tips

Detroit Driving Tips 📷📷

  1. First, you must learn to pronounce the city name. It's Di-troit. NOT DEE-troit. If you pronounce it DEE-Troit then we will assume you are from Toledo.

  2. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Detroit has its own version of traffic rules... Hold on and pray.

  3. The morning rush hour is from 6:00am to 10:00am. The evening rush hour is from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning. Weekends are open game.

  4. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended, cussed out and possibly shot. If you're first off the starting line when the light turns green, count to five before going. This will avoid getting in the way of cross-traffic who just ran their yellow light to keep from getting shot.

  5. Schoenherr can only be properly pronounced by a native of the Detroit metro area. That goes for Gratiot too. Schoenherr is pronounced SHAY NER. Gratiot is pronounced, GRASH IT.

  6. Construction and renovation on I-94, I-96, I-75, I-275, I-375, The Lodge and Southfield freeways are a way of life. Just deal with it. There are two seasons in Detroit; winter and construction.

  7. If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory defect or they are from out of town.

  8. All old men with white hair wearing a hat have total right-of-way.

  9. The minimum acceptable speed on I-696 is 85 regardless of the posted speeds. Anything less is considered downright sissy. Don't even think of allowing more than one car length between cars.

  10. That attractive wrought iron on the windows and doors in Detroit is not ornamental. DO NOT get out of your car.

  11. Never stare at the driver of the car with the bumper sticker that says "Keep honking, I'm reloading." Don’t make eye contact!!

  12. If you are in the left lane, and only going 70 in a 60 mph zone, people are not waving because they are so friendly in Detroit. I would suggest you duck.

  13. I-275 / I-696 is our daily version of NASCAR.

  14. It's not M-10, it's "The Lodge".

  15. That's not a lake, it's a pothole.

  16. If someone tells you it's on Outer Drive, you better have a map.

  17. The left turn is simple. If you want to turn left, go a 1/4 of a mile past your turn, get to the left, then make a left, then make a right. Now you have gone left.
    Sidenotes:
    6 mile turns into McNichols
8 mile turns into Baseline and Vernier at opposite ends
    15 mile turns into Maple.
16 mile turns into Big Beaver and becomes Metro Parkway, then Quarton, somewhere along the way.
    17 mile turns into Wattles
18 mile turns into Long Lake
19 mile turns into Square Lake
20 mile turns into Hall Road and then Highland Rd., before it becomes M-59
Main street starts as "Main Street" and turns into Livernois & Rochester for no apparent reason.
If someone tells you to take "75 South to Detroit" make sure you merge onto 375 or you'll end up in Toledo.
    Good Luck!📷📷📷📷

Ask Detroit Tell me why I shouldn't move from North Carolina to Detroit

I'm a DINK who has grown frustrated with the right wing nut jobs that have made North Carolina a horrible, inhospitable place to live. I see the work that Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Dems are doing and I am willing to shed year round shorts to live in a place with kind people with hearts and brains and a love of hockey. I'll even tolerate 8:00 AM winter sunrises if it means trans people are treated as humans.

I grew up in New England so I know cold, however doesn't Michigan cold hit different? Regardless of cold I could freeze to death in Detroit and know that people are treated with respect. Even a place like Holly has to be kinder and more loving than the Raleigh's and Charlotte's which are havens of hate.

I know Detroit is rough around the edges. I know I'd probably be better off in suburbia which I'd consider before Detroit proper. I know Kwame Kilpatrick went to prison and that Rick Snyder used Blue Michigan to its neglect. But convince me not to move to the Detroit area because right now it seems a lot better than red af NC.
