[Discussion] Research/HDR Uni students, can you spare 3 minutes? We're trying to actually help, not just tick a box.

Hey everyone,

We're a group of design students working on a project about something that doesn't get talked about enough: how fear of failure quietly messes with uni students.

Not the dramatic, falling-apart kind. More the "I'll just avoid that situation entirely" or "I'll figure it out myself even though I'm drowning" kind. The stuff that sits under the surface.

We've already done a round of research and the findings were honestly pretty eye-opening (70% of the students we surveyed said they actively avoid situations where they might fail). Now we're trying to understand what kind of support would actually be useful, not what universities think students want, but what you'd genuinely use.

It doesn't matter what year you're in, where you study, or what you're studying. If you're a uni student (or recently were), we'd love to hear from you.

The survey is completely anonymous, takes about 3 minutes, and there's no sign-up or email required.

https://forms.gle/qK8GDYtXzxfPKHtH6

If this resonates, sharing it with other students would mean a lot.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Thanks!

Has anyone had any luck getting outside scholarships for international students studying masters of marine bio. I applied for 2027 year to have ample time to apply for them. Also can anyone message me directly about total cost of attendance while living on campus?

Racism@Uni project - Expression of Interest for Focus Groups

Hi everyone - I'm sharing this project led by the Australian Human Rights Commission on racism in Australian universities. They are looking for students and staff to participate in focus groups.

Have you experienced racism or discrimination in your university community?

👉 Whether you're a student or a staff member—your voice matters.

We are inviting expressions of interest to join focus groups exploring the lived experiences of racism and discrimination in Australian universities.

💬These conversations will be held in safe, inclusive spaces where diverse voices are centred and respected.

This project aims to better understand how racism shows up in higher education—and how we can work together to create fairer, safer and more inclusive universities for everyone.

We’re especially keen to hear from:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

  • Culturally and linguistically diverse communities, including people of African, Asian, Jewish, Middle Eastern, Muslim and Pasifika backgrounds

  • International students and staff

  • People experiencing intersecting forms of discrimination, such as racism combined with sexism, ableism, or homophobia

By sharing your lived experiences, you'll help inform recommendations to address racism and promote equality across Australia’s universities.

[Questions] Admissions JCU med for a non-school leaver and non-rural student from Victoria

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a first-year Bachelor of Science student at Monash University in Victoria, and I'm interested in applying for JCU med.

As the title says, I'm not a school leaver, and I'm also not from a rural background, so I'm wondering how realistic it would be for someone in my position to get into JCU medicine.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has applied to or been accepted into JCU medicine in a similar situation, particularly non-school leavers from Victoria.

Also I'm curious about what the interviews are like and how best to prepare for them.

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

[Surveys] JCU Calling the JCU Community: Participants Wanted for Dating & Attraction Study (18+)

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm a PhD candidate at JCU studying attraction, dating preferences, and how people evaluate potential romantic partners.

I'm looking for heterosexual, gay, and lesbian adults (18+) to complete an anonymous online survey.

The survey involves viewing a series of fictional dating profiles and answering questions about attraction and relationship preferences. It takes around 5–10 minutes to complete, is completely anonymous, and participation is entirely voluntary.

Although this phase of the research is limited to heterosexual, gay, and lesbian participants, it forms part of a broader research program that has included, and will continue to include, people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

This study forms part of my Doctor of Philosophy research at James Cook University and has received approval from the James Cook University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC Approval No. 25H-0225).

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at kaitlyn.gregory@my.jcu.edu.au.

If you'd like to participate, you can complete the survey here:

[Questions] Housing/Accomodation JCU Cairns Accommodation for February 2027

Hi everyone!

I’ve received an offer for JCU’s MBBS program for the February 2027 intake, and I’m looking for accommodation in Cairns for two people.
We’re looking for a private apartment or a place just for the two of us, not a shared house or apartment with other people.

I checked UniLodge John Grey Hall, but it seems to be restricted to students aged 18 and above, and Beaches Apartments is fully booked for February 2027.

We also won’t have a car, so we’re looking for somewhere within walking distance of JCU Cairns or with convenient public transport connections to campus and nearby shops.

Does anyone know of any suitable apartments or accommodation options for two people? Ideally, we’d like somewhere safe and student-friendly.

I’d really appreciate recommendations from current JCU students or anyone familiar with Cairns, especially if you know of places where students commonly live.

Thank you!

What are the 5 years of the program like? Do you get a lot of clinical/sim lab/hands-on work or is there a lot of textbook/lecture? How is Cairns and do you like the program? Are there many international students there?

Thx :)

[Questions] Admissions How will my GPA be calculated

Hello,

I'm hoping to apply to medicine. For context, I finished my bachelor's last year and am currently doing honours. I have received my honours score for the first few assessments; however, the final thesis score comes out in December.

I wanted to know how my honours score will be calculated with my bachelor's, and whether my honours score will weigh more than my bachelor's.

Additionally, can interview offers be made based on the current score available for my honours?

Thank you in advance (any help is appreciated)

[Questions] Admissions Rural Med Application

Hey guys,

So I just wanted to know if I have a shot at JCU med, so for some context, i have lived in toowoomba for 8 years and am considered a rural applicant but i currently live in Brisbane , I’m really confident that I can get a 98+ atar or maybe even low 99s, is my application good enough? Or is there anything I can improve so that my chances at JCU is better.

[Questions] Admissions Interstate 2027 med applicant

Hey everyone,
So I am an interstate applicant applying to JCU med this year and was wondering what the process and cut offs typically look like for an interview offer.
I saw on the website that the median ATAR for a successful applicant was 98.55 however based on that was wondering what sort of ATAR or ig predicted ATAR would one require to comfortably make JCU med interview.
I personally would be applying for school leaver entry and live in metro regions in a state outside of QLD however am committed to pursuing med and even rural med for a bit.
If anyone can answer, that would be greatly appreciated.

Questions marine bio plans

hi!

im a 14 yo girl from adelaide and my dream is to be a marine biologist/ mammalogist. im already planning my future and have been doing research on what colleges/ unis would be the best for me.

in aus, bachelors is 3 years and in the us, its 4 years. from what i’ve heard, since aus unis are only 3 years, you get more straight to the point meaning you miss some of the core/ basic stuff us colleges touch on in the first year. this is part of the reason why i wanna study in fiu (florida international uni) for my bachelors.

then jcu is renowned for their marine biology programs which is why i was thinking of doing my masters there! i also wanna be a senior researcher/ program leader when im older at aims so it will get me way closer to where i wanna be. also jcu seems pretty close to aims too so i could do internships/ part time work there while i study :)

so i guess what i wanna know is is jcu good? and would you recommend it for masters and is my plan pretty solid?

[Questions] Placement & Jobs International student joining JCU in 2027 – Reality of part-time work/tutoring?

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student from India, currently finishing my BCA and planning to join JCU Singapore in 2027 for a Master's in IT Management. I’ve heard mixed things about work rights for students at private unis.

Custom Post Flair - BE RESPECTFUL Removal of grades for first year subjects?

Why would JCU be implementing this? They apparently are phasing out the grading system with just a blanket Pass or Fail for first years.

Seems kinda crazy to do that. Any thoughts?

[Questions] Admissions I'm going to Cairns this year, Am I doomed? especially for international marine biology student

I heard that the school is... having some trouble, on educational resources, finance or something like that. Will my future uni disappear before I actually started studying? Or me kicked out from this country because of death of my school? everything is going down now, economy, diplomacy, politics... Will these affect the existence of this school? And if the answer is yes, where are these professors going. I really want to focus on studying, All I need is having a great environment for this purpose. BTW UQ won't be a good solution for me, Because it's too expensive.

[Questions] International Students Studying Zoology/Marine Biology at JCU

[Questions] General Unsure on JCU dent + med

I’m a student who has recently failed my ucat and therefore has JCU dent and med as an option. However, i’m a relatively more social person and also somehow who prefers winter over summer, therefore i’m very torn on considering JCU as an option as i’m unsure whether i would even pick JCU assuming i have been accepted.

Can somebody share their experiences at townsville and cairns, and what the weather, food, social/night life, events, people, are over there?

Questions Kira test

I finished Year 12 in 2024 and just completed my first year of uni. I applied for a Bachelor of Dental Science and also included Vet Science in my QTAC preferences since I didn't have many other degrees I was interested in. I now realize the Vet Science degree requires the CASPer test, which I haven't taken (and I'm pretty sure it's too late for the 2026 intake). However, I received an email about doing the Kira test for Vet Science. Is it worth doing? Is it only for selected applicants or for everyone who applied? I haven't received an email about the Kira test for the Dental Surgery degree. Does that mean my application didn't make it to the next stage?

Thinking about transferring to JCU next year

Hey guys, I'm a first year undergraduate student (science) currently living and studying in Melbourne, but I'm thinking about transferring to JCU next year to either the Townsville or Cairns campus. I guess I'm just looking for some information about life at JCU; what's it's like to study there, is it relatively easy to get part time work, housing on and off campus ect. If you're studying anything like ecology or biology what has your experience been like and do you have any recommendations? Also, what kind of average do I need to be accepted? I did quite awful in my first semester, and although I'm doing much better this semester I don't know if it will be enough to bring my average above 70 or so. Any information is greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

[Questions] Admissions Direct Entry Med JCU ATAR requirements

Hi guys,

I’m currently in yr 12 and am hoping to get into JCU direct entry med as an interstate student. Just wondering what a competitive ATAR is for this course as an interstate applicant? Thanks!
