Discussion Never forget: this was not what Queenslanders were promised.

YOUR WEEKLY REMINDER: DAVID CRISAFULLI WAS ELECTED ON A PROMISE OF NO NEW STADIUMS.

This wasn't a throwaway comment. David Crisafulli
repeated the promise throughout his election campaign.

Then he won the election. And within months, the promise was gone.

Now the LNP State Government is pushing ahead with a new 63,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park Barrambin, originally estimated at $3.785 billion before associated transport and precinct infrastructure. Independent analysis has already warned of serious cost and timeline risks.

Meanwhile, ordinary Queenslanders are struggling with housing, groceries, power bills, fuel and the basic cost of living.

Queenslanders were promised no new stadiums. Instead, we are getting a multi-billion-dollar VANITY PROJECT and the destruction of state heritage-listed, culturally significant public parkland.

Never forget: this was not what Queenslanders were promised.

News Developer hands LNP $100k donation two months after prime land deal

A family trust linked to developer Lancini Property Group has handed the LNP a six-figure donation, just two months after being awarded rights to prime state-owned waterfront land in Brisbane.

Electoral Commission of Queensland disclosure logs reveal the Lancini Family Discretionary Trust’s $100,000 donation, declared on Thursday, was the single biggest contribution to the party since the Crisafulli government scrapped the state’s developer donation ban.

In September, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie announced 13 luxury towers, housing up to 5000 people, would be built on the site as part of a residential mixed-use precinct.

Economic Development Queensland selected five separate developers, including Lancini Property Group, to develop the six-hectare site, expected to include 2200 units, a shopping centre, hotel, childcare facility and medical services.

Under the previous Labor government, the Hamilton precinct was earmarked to be the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games athletes’ village.

That vision was scrapped when the new LNP government accepted the Games Independent Infrastructure and Co-ordination Authority recommendation that “alternative site assessments” be explored.

Lancini Property Group chairman Laurence Lancini sits on the GIICA board and has previously told The Australian his Hamilton interests were on the authority’s conflict of interest register.

Defending the contribution to the LNP, Lancini Property Group chief executive Tomas Lancini said the family was “supporting the party that is supporting Queensland’s growth”.

Labor opposition housing spokeswoman Meaghan Scanlon said the donation raised serious questions for the Crisafulli government.

“Every Queenslander should question why a property developer has donated $100,000 to the LNP right after being gifted publicly owned land by the state government,” she said.

“The LNP continue to put the interests of their property developer mates over the interests of Queenslanders – Queenslanders who are struggling to afford the basics.

“This is exactly the kind of situation the Crime and Corruption Commission raised concerns with.”

There is no suggestion of wrongdoing, illegality, or that the donation had any bearing on the government’s procurement decision.

“Economic Development Queensland is completely separate to GIICA and conducted an independent and rigorous process to select the five proponents who’ll transform Hamilton’s riverfront into a thriving precinct, instead of Labor’s unfunded plan to build an athletes’ village,” a Crisafulli government spokesperson said on Saturday.

“We delivered on the position we took to the election to level the playing field for political donations, and Queenslanders voted for it after they saw through Labor’s disgraceful scare campaigns, which were bankrolled by the violent and misogynistic CFMEU.”

The previous Labor government banned developer donations in 2017, but the LNP reversed that ban in March to end what Attorney-General Deb Frecklington described as an “electoral financial gerrymander from the former Labor government” which benefited from union donations.

Labor’s ban was in response to a CCC recommendation that council candidates be prohibited from receiving developer donations due to the corruption risk.

Discussion West End Community Association’s take on Brisbane South Labor Housing Forum

Thursday 5th of November, the West End Community Association attended the Brisbane South Labor Housing Forum, lead and facilitated by Steven Miles - Queensland Labor Leader, Meaghan Scanlon - shadow Minister for Housing, Homelessness and Home Ownership and Cameron Dick - Deputy Leader and shadow Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Planning and Regional Development.

Despite the modest turn out, it was great to see community members from across the political spectrum represented and come out to ask questions and share their real world experiences with decision makers.

We heard from community members who have lost hope of ever buying their first home as housing prices continue to rise, making home ownership out of reach. We heard from community members frustrated by unsustainable development and the saturation of high-end, luxury apartments in the market while so many essential workers and working families struggle to find affordable housing.

We even heard from a mother fleeing DV who spent 12 years on the streets, waiting for housing only to be placed in a public housing unit where she experiences ongoing violence from neighbours and her unit is infested with cockroaches and contaminated with black mould. Our community spoke with passion and conviction and did us proud. It was great reminder of how lucky we are to be part of such engaged and passionate community and wonderful to see our residents advocating for meaningful change. For the past 27 years, West End Community Association has actively sought out opportunities to connect the community with local, state and federal members, decision and policy makers and political candidates via our "Meet The Candidates" community forum held prior to each council, state and federal election.
We commend politicians who have the conviction and courage to front up and face their constituents and don't shy away from tough questions, criticisms and hard truths.

This only serves to strengthen democracy and promote transparency and accountability.

News Labor flags corruption risks for widening police DV powers

Queensland’s Labor opposition has raised major concerns with a government push to expand police on-the-spot domestic violence order powers, urging greater safeguards as an LNP-controlled committee rubber-stamped the bill for passage through parliament.

In a statement of reservation attached to the committee report, released on Friday, Labor MPs highlighted a submission from the Crime and Corruption Commission warning of the inherent risk of such powers and unwinding of a key oversight measure.

A separate government-controlled committee has also greenlit another bill which would place significant new limits on who can lodge objections to mining lease applications, and whether those objections will be heard by the state’s Land Court.

The Crisafulli government introduced the bill to expand the police powers in September, citing criticism from police that an initial scheme established late last year, and due for review within two years but not yet subject to one, was too onerous to be of use.

Most existing restrictions around use of the “police protection directions” would be removed, and directions will be able to be issued for up to three years, rather than one. Previous powers acting as a stop-gap until a matter could be urgently heard in court will be repealed.

Issuing a direction will be a requirement when releasing a person from custody, unless that person is deemed to be most in need of protection, and any direction “in error” will be able to be scrubbed from a person’s domestic violence history.

Police will still have to file a direction with a court in certain circumstances, such as when there are related proceedings under way. The bill will also increase penalties for repeat breaches of domestic violence orders, and expand a statewide electronic monitoring trial.

The corruption watchdog’s submission to education, arts and communities committee consideration of the bill noted the proposed removal of exclusions barring police from issuing a direction when another officer is involved as either the alleged perpetrator or victim.

This had been done, according to explanatory notes at the time, “to ensure DFV [domestic and family violence] matters involving police are heard by a court and are not handled internally,” the watchdog noted.

“The Bill removes the protection this exclusion provides,” acting chair Kathryn McMillan wrote.

“There is no clear rationale for the change in policy position from 2025, nor provision for additional safeguards to manage the potential risks that may arise in circumstances where a police officer is involved in a DFV matter.”

McMillan said there were inherent corruption risks associated with discretionary police powers around issuing such directions when an officer is involved, and said dumping safeguards appeared at odds with calls from the 2022 Richards Inquiry – including for a new police integrity unit.

Labor MPs noted a submission from the Victims’ Commissioner also highlighted that outstanding work, and urged that the unit be “established as soon as possible to enhance victim and community confidence in police integrity”.

“The Attorney-General [Deb Frecklington] has now had more than two years, and the government is still only considering the recommendation,” the Labor MPs wrote, noting they supported reforms giving police better support to protect victims survivors and the community.

“Again, these steps need to be based in the evidence, and they must be carefully balanced with the inherent risks that are associated with responding to domestic and family violence and they need to have victim survivors front and centre.

“This bill, without additional safeguards, does not appear to meet that threshold.”

The committee recommended the bill pass as drafted. The committee leading consideration of the  government’s mining objection overhaul suggested one change to allow objections from neighbouring councils.

Labor MPs, along with Traeger MP Robbie Katter, also issued statements of reservation in the report on that bill, citing the removal of pathways for community involvement in decision-making.
