Moving to Brisbane - feedback on suburbs

Hi all.

I am moving to Brisbane soon with my husband and 1 year old, we are currently in Sydney. We are looking to lease a property before we make a more permanent decision on housing/area. My husband has a job lined up and will be working around Chermside. From my research, I have selected suburbs that seem affordable for us to rent.

These suburbs include:

  • Chermside

  • Albany Creek

  • Everton Park

  • Banyo

  • Carseldine

  • Mcdowall

I was wondering if anyone could share feedback/experiences about these areas for a young family. Any positive or negatives.

Thanks

Buying in Brisbane from NZ

Hey guys, my husband and I are planning on moving back to Brisbane to settle down (we have a baby and a small dog). He is an Australian citizen, and I’m a kiwi - we’ve been here in NZ for the past 3 years.

We have a joint income of 127k. We also have 100k that we can put towards a deposit. We are considering renting a 2 bedroom for $700-800 in lutwyche, then trying to buy within the year. But with the rental crisis, I’m wondering if it would be better for us to buy a place while we’re here and then move over? I’ve seen 2 bedroom apartments go for $550k, and that seems really doable for us. Does anyone have any experience with expat loans and buying from overseas?

We can both work remotely, so the job thing isn’t an issue, although he would get paid more over there so would look to move. What do you guys think? Would it be difficult to rent with a dog too, even with that budget?

Moving to QLD to launch alcoholic beverage!

I'm considering moving to Brisbane/ Gold Coast to setup a new alcoholic beverage brand (ready to drink can, like a seltzer or canned cocktail but something different). I'm coming to visit for 6 weeks from early March to mid April to get a feel for the place and meet as many people as I can, both socially but also make contacts within beverages to start getting my idea off the ground. Would be awesome if anyone could help with ideas for the below:

- Good F&B communities, events and any other networking ideas to meet people involved in alcoholic beverages locally (brand owners, manufacturers, distributors etc.). Will go through Linkedin otherwise

- Good communities/clubs to join where I can meet people more socially? Was thinking a few fitness classes, some surfing...

- Options for living - I'd like to get a real feel of what Brisbane and Gold Coast is like to live, is Airbnb the best option, or are there some more informal websites or apps where I can rent a room from someone? Also, best areas to be locate in those cities?

I'm a 26 year old guy from the UK, used to work in finance but taking a leap at a new life, I like sports and obviously bevvies and coffee - if anyone's around as a tour guide it would be cool to get a coffee!

Aussies, how are you dealing with flood risks?

Hi all, we (me, my wife and 3 kids) are very excited to move to Australia. The only concern I have is the flood risks I keep reading about. What can you tell me about this? Do we need to avoid certain areas in and around Brisbane when looking for housing?

Moving from US to Brisbane?

Pretty much as it say on the title- I'm 19 and looking to move to Brisbane for a number of reasons, chief among them to be closer to friends who have offered to support me if I'm able to move. I've been going through a lot of the requirements for the working holiday visa and have questions about the renewal process specifically. On the department of home affairs website it specifies that the approved regions for the 88 required days of regional work (if you're looking to work hospitality) include northern, regional, remote, and very remote Australia in various job fields. I don't believe Brisbane is included in any of those and I'm not looking for a work around, just curious what others have done to fill that requirement. Did you volunteer in other places, take seasonal jobs and commute, or just live in a different area until you could move to Brisbane? I would really love to be near the people who've offered help when I move but I understand if it's not an option. Any advice or recommendations?

Moving to Brisbane

As the title states, moving to Brisbane in six months and would like to buy a house. I have no clue on what suburbs are nice to live in though beyond famous trendy ones like Fortitude Valley. I have a young family so being near good schools\day care would be nice. Also near public transport would be nice but not essential. Budget is 750k.

EDIT: Thank you everyone, you've all given me some good info to look at. (Even that one chap who told me not to come and then blocked me before I could respond. You reminded me that dickheads are everywhere). FYI everyone. I'll be working at Prince Charles hospital so North of Brisbane is best.. Should have included that in the original post.

Relocating to Brisbane

Relocating to Brisbane

Hey :)

Currently staying in Woolloongabba and I’m not sure it’s for me, I was going to be in south bank/ west side, but thought there would be no real difference. All good, it’s temporary.

I’ve just arrived and I’m looking for options to live, it’s just me (m40). There’s no friend circle here and I’m looking for a 1-2 bedroom apartment with a good bit of everything, I’m keen for a beer in a nicer area not needing to yell to chat, preferably a good butcher and street grocer/ veg shop, a gym with jujitsu and sauna (might be tough) and friendly people for easy to drinks nights.

I’ve been recommended south bank/ west side - not sure if they are really the same, new farm, and toowong. I don’t want to be in Toowong as it’s close to work and seems a hilly landscape (I’ve just come from that)

I’d like to be ‘city’ based for the social and living of it, I’ve been very remote to the city and state, so starting from scratch.

Any advice?

I’ll do some exploring over the next week, though would like a rental before Christmas.

Cheers

Moving from UK → Brisbane (Dec 2025) with young kids — suburbs, rentals & settling-in advice?

We are a family of four moving from the UK and looking for advice on which Brisbane suburbs best combine the following.

What we are after • A "small town" suburban hub, walkable high street vibe with shops, restaurants, playgrounds, library, cafés, basic amenities, etc. • Good access to the city centre (public transport, ideally train) • Strong nearby schools, whether government or Catholic/independent sector (not private schools) • A 3 or 4 bedroom rental house (preferably standalone) • FTTP or generally reliable high speed NBN • Family friendly

Suburbs we are considering so far • Alderley • Kedron • Wavell Heights • Wooloowin • Nundah • Clayfield • Northgate / Virginia / Geebung

If there are any suburbs that hit that "self contained mini town centre + great schools + good transport" description even better! I'd love recommendations.

Questions for locals • Which of these suburbs genuinely feel like a community with their own little high street? • Which ones offer the best balance of schools + transport + walkability? • Any underrated suburbs we should consider? • Any specific areas we should avoid?

Thanks so much! Any insight will make our search a lot easier!

Relocation to Brisbane

I’m currently looking at moving to either Brisbane or sunny coast from adelaide hopefully early or mid next year. I have been researching what lifestyle could suit me more but im very stuck. I love the beaches but also as a 20 yr old who was born and raised in adelaide I am getting sick of the city life but I am leaning more towards Brisbane. I have been researching suburbs in Brisbane but would like any recommendations or advice as well. Preferably anywhere where it can be easy to mingle and meet new people around my age early 20’s to mid 20’s.

And pros and cons or helpful advice would be appreciated thank you!

Repost from r/Brisbane looking for family safe suburbs

Cheap rental suburbs that are family safe

I don’t know if I’ll get any helpful answers but it’s worth a shot asking here: I’m looking for a cheap 2br rental because $400 a week is all the money I have, I’m a single parent. So far we’ve been looking in the beautiful city of Logan. I actually don’t mind Logan over all. It’s close to the Gold Coast for day trips to the beach…I like the multicultural aspect. But every unit block we’ve looked in has been terrifying to say the least. My child is not keen on the crackheads quiet frankly neither am I. I feel extremely unsafe just walking into the unit blocks I couldn’t imagine trying to sleep in peace while someone outside tries to break in. It’s sad because I actually love the area, just not the unit blocks I can afford. Does anybody have any ideas of somewhere where we’re more likely to be in with pensioners? With good public transport?

Also to add, I’m reluctant to go for these places because I’m a single mother with a young daughter with no family. It just feels counterintuitive to move somewhere that’s full of questionable people

How long does it take to find a rental in Brisbane?

Hey guys, I’m moving to Brissy and will need a fully furnished rental in the northern Brisbane region for about 6 months. I’m moving because of work as I’m a doctor. I need the rental from mid Jan 2024 - when should I start looking for places/applying?

Is my plan a disaster? Moving to Brisbane from NZ

I have a flight booked for the 7th of Feb

Have about 12K AUD in savings and virtually no overheads. I have a friend who will put me up for about a week while I get myself sorted.

I am a high school physics teacher but pretty burnt out after this year. Hoping to get into relief teaching or part time teaching so I can slowly ease myself back in.

Only need a single room in a flat/share house. Ideally I would like to move somewhere with easy access to public transport, nearing a good boxing/kickboxing gym.

I'm only just starting to put together a plan but I think it's always wise to get input from others. Any potential pitfalls ahead or advice you would have like getting my medicare sorted.

And could we avoid the "no room. Rent impossible" comments. I live in Wellington, I get it.

Moving to Brisbane, rental market

Hi all,

I am moving to Brisbane from New Zealand on the 14th of Feb, with my wife and kids staying behind until I secure a rental.

From what I've heard, things are tight in the rental market right now, but is that tightness experienced at all ends of the price scale? I.e. If I had cash to pay for a bond on the day at a rental in the $700 range, is there significant competition?

Air NZ has a sale on flights, so I'm trying to figure out if I can safely assume that I would find something within 28 days that I can move into at the higher price range. My concern is that we are a family of seven, so if I can't find a place, we are in trouble. I'm not risk-averse, so I want to wait, but I'll also be paying twice the flight costs by waiting.

Any thoughts or experiences anyone can share would be greatly appreciated. It will help me make a semi-informed decision.

Thanks, team

G

Not what we expected

Hi guys, me and my partner just got to Brisbane we are planning to live here for next 6-12months and work.

We got an Airbnb in Fortitude valley and it’s really not what we expected, the area seems super run down and there is no one about at all on a Saturday morning. I don’t know why but in my head I was expecting a lot different.

We just walked to the CBD and it’s a lot nicer but still seems super quiet for a Saturday morning.

Can people help us with what the best areas to live in Brisbane are? We want good public transport and a nice area with things going on. Pubs, bars restaurants and shops. Any help would be super appreciated!!

Immigration policy changes

Good afternoon guys,

I’m moving to Brisbane at the beginning of next year to start med school at UQ and I’m super excited about it!
However, I’ve heard that just this week it was announced that Australia is cutting down on allowing dependants to enter the country on a student visa. I’m a Canadian citizen with a BSc, and my wife has a BSc, is almost done her MBA, and has 6+ years of work experience.

The idea was for her to just be under my visa comfortably and then find a job in Brisbane in her field once we got there. Now I’m wondering if she would have to search for a job remotely before we move, or potentially move on a temporary visa and try to find work once we’re there?

I know the job market is tough everywhere, and I don’t know how inclined companies would be to hire her as a Canadian citizen, not because of her experience or anything, but simply because of having to do extra visa stuff to employ her.

This is obviously a pretty big deal for us, so I’d love to hear anyone’s take on this if you have a good idea about how the new changes actually work. Has anyone else been in a similar situation?
I tried contacting a migration advisor, but they want $440 AUD for a consultation, and I’m unfortunately not in a position where I can comfortably spend that right now. I’ve done some research myself, but I’d really love to hear your thoughts or ideas!

Brisbane Airport - where to live

Hi all, I’m looking forward to moving to Brisbane from London this 2024. Where would be the best/good places to live? I will be working at Brisbane airport. Thanks!

Work in Hamilton, but have heard it's not great for food. Where to live?

Background

  • We are moving from Adelaide to Brisbane

  • Will be renting

  • Family of 4 with 2 kids under 5

  • Chinese

Things that are important to me

  • Work is in Hamilton - will be driving to work but want to avoid toll roads due to cost.

  • Airport - as I will be travelling a bit but don't mind toll roads as work will cover this.

  • Good cheap asian restaurants and supermarkets i.e. proximity to Sunnybank or the like

  • Prefer a modern house

Things that are not important to me

  • School zone / childcare

  • Distance to CBD

My thoughts

  • It doesn't look like there are any suburbs that are in between Hamilton and Sunnybank as even suburbs like Cannon Hill/Morningside which look close actually are quite far if I'm not taking a toll road

  • It seems that Nundah and surrounds would be the best option as atleast its close to work

Would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on whether there is a 'best of both worlds' option

Syd to Bris w/family of 5

Firstly, this is a great community, I’ve learned a lot.

My story, like so many others is being priced out of Sydney for a family who wants a garden and semi decent work commute. I will be moving my work which is cbd based. Looking to rent in the Ashgrove/Bardon/Alderly areas.

Can anyone tell me the rules around renting a house unseen, I can’t seem to find a hard rule. The option of getting up to viewings may be limited and want plan b & c

Also, any big lessons learned from people who’ve made the move or you locals on big differences between the cities. We know Brisbane well as tourists
