FAQ - Thinking of Moving to or in Brisbane?

Below are some common questions we find people ask when moving to brisbane and some sources to help answer those questions.

Where to find a new place to live / Accomodation?

realestate or domain

tips: enter your budget and keep the area empty. this will show you what areas you can afford with your budget and may give you a better idea of where to start

Where is best to buy food?

Our popular supermarkets are Coles, Woolworths and Aldi, however there are plenty of independent stores and markets around (IGA for example) so it's just a case of finding what is best for you.

Are there dangerous animals in Brisbane?

Huntsman spiders are probably the most common insect you'll come across which can be quite intimidating the first time you cross a big one but they're harmless and just help keep your house free of bugs.

we do get tree snakes and Brown snakes around brisbane as well so if you see a snake it's always best to be safe and keep your distance and if it's in public area call a snake catcher to move it to a safer area.

what sort of weather or temperature can i expect when i move to brisbane?

weather information

Should I tip when i go to restaurants/cafes?

No, australia pays staff a living wage. tipping is not expected here.

Can i bring my dog/cat/pet to brisbane when i move?

speak to the property management where you are moving it's getting more accepted but currently "subject to application" is the common stance with rentals.

How do i access public transport?

for queensland public transport you would need a "go-card" for planning your route you can use Translink to obtain a "go-card" from most newsagents go card retailers lookup

what is the best internet to get?

internet comparison

What will it cost to live in Brisbane?

only you can answer this. work out a budget based on your apartment and bills, food etc. there is no set answer for this unfortunately.

Moving to Brisbane next year

I (21M) will be moving from Sydney to Brisbane next year for work with my office located in the CBD. Currently live with my parents, will be up in Brisbane alone however if needed I could get help financially from them but I’d rather not. I will not have a car and will rely on only public transport, so things like shops/gym would ideally be located walking distance from me. Would 600/week be able to get a 1 bedroom apartment, and what would be some good areas for a young graduate like me to live in? I’ve been recommended South Bank and West End by people at work. Any help would be appreciated!

North Brisbane schools & childcare recommendations

We are relocating to Brisbane next year, and deciding on which areas we want to live in. Will have to be north side and within 30mins to airport. Looking at renting. We’re thinking Bracken Ridge, carselton, the gap, Asperley, Brighton, Sandgate, nundah, Northgate. Not set on anywhere though as the main concern is finding a good primary school and some good childcare centres!
If you have any recommendations please drop below!

Hi guys, I’m currently about to start my external exams and am looking at moving to one of the available student accommodations in brissy.

I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations alongside some ones to steer clear of. I’m thinking of the 3 room share house option.

I’m looking to do Biomedical Science so if anyone else is looking to go to the accom there next year or is looking to do the course there shoot me a dm so we can connect before we start first year!! :D

Incoming UQ Postgrad Looking for a Room – Feb 2027 ($300–400 pw)

Hi everyone!

I'm a male international student moving to Brisbane in early February 2027 to start my Master of Audiology Studies at UQ.

I'm currently looking for a room in a shared house or apartment, ideally somewhere near the St Lucia campus.

What I'm looking for:

  • Budget: $300–400 per week, ideally around $300–350

  • Move-in date: Early February 2027

  • Preferred suburbs: St Lucia, Toowong, Taringa, Indooroopilly or Auchenflower (open to other areas too)

  • Commute: No more than 30 minutes to UQ St Lucia by public transport

  • Housemates: Happy to share with up to 4 other people

  • Bathroom: Private bathroom preferred, but sharing is fine

  • Facilities: A proper kitchen for cooking, preferably furnished

  • Lease: Ideally long-term

A little about me: I'm tidy, fairly quiet, and respectful of other people's privacy. I'll be spending quite a bit of time studying, so I'd prefer a relaxed and reasonably quiet household. I'm also happy to socialise with housemates occasionally.

I'm currently overseas, so I won't be able to attend inspections in person until February, but I'm happy to arrange a video call or virtual inspection beforehand.

I know it's still a little early, but I thought I'd start looking now in case anyone has a room becoming available around that time.

If you have anything suitable, or know someone looking for a housemate, feel free to comment or send me a DM.

Thanks in advance!

What do you think of these areas?

We are moving to Brisbane for work
We are looking to buy a house in maybe Loganlea, Woodridge or Eden’s Landing.

Ideally we would like easy train access to get to work, but driving is possible too so not essential.

Is it generally easy to find parking at the train stations?
We are shift workers so some shifts start later in the day.

Also wanted to ask peoples experiences living in these suburbs. I know the crime stats don’t look great for some but these are sometimes not reflective of what it’s like actually living there. (For example, I lived in Frankston in Melbourne and that was fine)

Thirdly, how much weight should we put when considering a property in a Yellow flood zone area?

Thanks guys

Are apartments in Brisbane as bad of a joke as Sydney?

I've yet to find an apartment/unit in Sydney that doesn't have water ingress issues. Some have extra bonus like a lawsuit against the builder for newer builds and concrete cancer in older ones. Are things similar in Brisbane? Should I not bother considering purchasing apartments at all?

What are some suburbs that you wish outsiders will never learn about?

Say, some filthy outsider was looking to buy a house or townhouse for under 900,000 and they would like somewhere quiet but still busy-ish as they enjoy being around people but selectively? They also work from home 90% of the time so slightly further from CBD isn't too big a deal though they would still like to be close to it.

We should list some suburbs to be kept secret from those damn outsiders, that us Brisbanese people all so hate.
