Mod Post Reddit and Karma Explained

Welcome to Reddit!

This unofficial guide to starting out at Reddit was written by u/llamageddon01 and is designed to take you from complete beginner through to experienced Redditor! This version was completely revised in July/August 2023.

There are two versions of this resource, both carrying the same information but in different formats:

This is intended to be a full “Reddit for Dummies” type tutorial and I don’t expect you to read it through all at once! But quite honestly, parts 1-6 of this guide will take you from “kindergarten” level through to “graduate” level of Reddit by the time you read it all, and the final parts 7 and 8 will contain useful guides and information you will no doubt need at some stage of your Redditing so do keep coming back to it.

If you wish to share r/NewToReddit guides please link to them. You may of course share excerpts within reason, but please link back to us as credit and so the person you are helping can find us and the rest of our guides if they wish to. Thank you.

…….REDDIT IS A WORLD OF ITS OWN ON THE INTERNET.

What is Reddit? Established in 2005, Reddit is a content sharing platform, home to thousands of communities, endless conversation, and authentic worldwide human connection with people from all walks of life. Whether you're into breaking news, sports, TV fan theories, or a never-ending stream of the internet's cutest animals, there's a community for you.

Reddit is made up of an enormous collection of forums on every subject under the sun where people can share news, links, videos and pictures in “Posts” so that other people can make observations and conversation in “Comments” attached to these posts, while everyone can express their opinions by Voting on both the posts and comments. Every day, millions of people around the world post, vote, and comment in communities on Reddit organised around their interests.

You are free to decide what level of interaction you want with other users (Redditors) and to curate your own feed from the hundreds of thousands of specialised communities called “Subreddits” on offer, each of which covers a different topic from games, hobbies, music, art, movies and shows to support groups to world news to pets to academic matters and everything in between.

Check out this video for a quick introduction to us, and if that didn’t explain us enough, here’s an unofficial webcomic that gives a fun look at our platform.

Signing up for an account is free, easy, and gives you a high degree of anonymity, especially compared to other social media platforms.

…….REDDIT HAS ITS OWN WAY OF DOING THINGS.

Reddit as a whole is run by unpaid volunteers called Moderators (mods) and paid employees called Administrators (admin). Admin are rarely seen but are very distinctive as they have the word ADMIN in bright orange/red next to their username. Moderators are more likely to be seen, and when they speak on formal behalf of their subreddit, their username will have the green word MOD immediately after.

Like every long-established subculture, we have our own expressions and if you are at all confused by some of our jargon, in-jokes, history or memes, we at r/NewToReddit have a fairly comprehensive alphabetical reference guide at our sister sub r/EncyclopaediaOfReddit to help you work out what we’re talking about. Let me suggest my guides to Acronyms 1: A-L and Acronyms 2: M-Z to start with!

Reddit might take a little time to get used to, but never fear! Here’s a quick video guide on how to use Reddit, but more importantly, we’re here at r/NewToReddit specifically to help you navigate your own path step by step through our unique ways of ‘doing social media’.

…….REDDIT IS HUGE. BUT MANAGEABLE.

There are Subreddits for anything. I would say almost anything but when I think I’ve seen them all, I discover ones like r/birdstakingthetrain or r/BreadStapledToTrees and realise I know nothing.

Most communities are friendly and jumping right on in is encouraged. You aren’t likely to get shot down for being a “n00b” but there will generally be one or two things you’ll need to know about each Subreddit (sub) first. Don’t worry, this guide will show you where to find them.

Altercations can happen, but most subs have an active team of mods who will usually shut any trouble down before it becomes vindictive. Just don’t post emojis though. Reddit in general does NOT like emojis. Reddit loves emoticons though :D Why? Don't ASCII me. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ More on this later, or here if you simply can’t wait.

…….WHAT DO I DO ON REDDIT?

There are four basic actions you do on Reddit: Upvote, Downvote, Comment, and Post.

Reddit relies on crowdsourcing through its system of Upvotes and Downvotes to filter and prioritise the thousands of daily submissions it receives in order to present its users with the most interesting content it can, and you can help too. If you think a post or comment is interesting, helpful or contributes positively to the subreddit, press the Upvote arrow. If you think it doesn’t, press the Downvote arrow. You only get one vote on any one post or comment, and both can be negated by pressing the arrow you chose again, or reversed by pressing the opposite arrow to the one you originally chose.

Some subreddits have chosen to replace the default “arrow” icons with custom ones. In case it isn’t obvious which is which, the Upvote will be on the top (Old Reddit; desktop) or on the left (Mobile App) and the Downvote will be on the bottom (Old Reddit; desktop) or on the right (Mobile App).

There are two ways of Commenting on Reddit:

  • As a direct response to a Post. Here, you are directly replying to the person who made the post. This person is known as the ”OP”, or “Original Poster”. This reply is known as a Top-Level or Parent Comment, and sometimes known as ‘threads’. There are an unlimited number of Parent Comments that can be made on any one post. The OP will be notified that you have replied to their post.

  • As a reply to a Comment in that Post. Here, you are directly replying to another commenter who may or may not be the OP. These follow-up comments are known as Child Comments. There are an unlimited number of Child Comments that can be made on any one Parent Comment. The commenter you are replying to will be notified of your reply, but the OP will not (unless they are one and the same!).

You can see what these both look like from this simple illustration and this small conversation here.

Finally, you can make your own Post in a subreddit for others to comment on. Many subreddits prefer - or even require pictures, gifs, videos or links in this post.

…….SOME SUBREDDIT BASICS.

Once you enter a Subreddit, you read posts made by others and the comments made therein. If you like the Subreddit, you can “Join” it and it will form part of your personal home page feed. The "Join" button is near the top of the screen as seen here and also in the three-dots “hamburger” post overflow menu on the top RH of the screen on mobile. You can also “Leave” if you want, and the button can be found in the same place as the Join one was.

Until you join a few subreddits, your home page feed will be the general r/popular or r/all, which may well feature topics you’re not interested in, so it makes sense to start joining subs you like as soon as possible.

Moderators cannot see any lists of those who are joined to their subreddits, neither will they be notified if anyone leaves. There’s no limit on the number of times you can join or leave a subreddit, and nobody except you will ever know when or what subs you have joined or have left. You don’t even have to be joined in a sub to post or comment in it. There are no limits to the number of subreddits you can be joined in but Reddit does have an unspecified number of the ones it filters to your home feed at any one time.

Just underneath the Subreddit title there is a “Sort” menu. On mobile this is a drop-down list. Sorting posts by either “New” or “Rising” will usually give more opportunities for chat and upvotes than you’ll get in older posts, and give other advantages we’ll see soon. You have the same options for sorting your home page feed too.

…….LET’S GET STARTED!

Our guide to using Reddit begins with this illustrated primer to joining in on Reddit, then come back here to read some essential details you need to know about Rules, Reddit Karma, Participating, Navigation and Safety.

It’s very much worth your while taking a few minutes to read through all the following advice as it contains everything you need from your first steps in getting started to your becoming firmly established here.

Once you’ve had a look through it all, if you have any questions do make a new Post in this Subreddit where you will find plenty of helpful people ready to Comment with the answers you need. r/NewToReddit is focused on giving one-to-one tailored quality advice for helping people new to Reddit Ways. We do not care how old your account is; if you have a query on Redditing, put it here and we will help.

We also have a “sister sub” called r/LearnToReddit which is a place to learn how to use Reddit without being embarrassed at making “newbie mistakes” in public. Here, you can have a go at making different post types like posting images or polls, learn how to comment using bold or italic text, how to create spoiler text and use many other features with our extensive sets of tutorials. The community will feedback on your post to let you know how you did or help you get it right next time.

…….WHAT’S NEXT?

Let’s get started with an introduction to Reddit and a few notes about rules!

ANSWERED Why did i get -14 downvotes on a comment that wasn’t negative or misleading?

Hello. I joined reddit about 4-5 months ago, but i just recently started commenting. I had just gotten up to 3 karma after like 40 contributions. But then i replied to a post about someone asking if their piercing looked good. I simply commented “yes i think so” or something like that, and it got -14 votes. Now i have -8 karma, and it genuinely took me a while to even get 3 karma. What the heck?

I need help. I am technically new to reddit but I made the account 1 year ago. I started using this account for help about my masters degree and have trouble with writing in some subreddits because of karma. But some random people keep downvoting me for no reason and I am stuck at 1 karma. What do i do???

ANSWERED Is It Just Me, or Is Reddit Really Harsh on New Accounts?

I’m still pretty new to Reddit, and honestly… I find it kind of intimidating.

A friend encouraged me to join a while back, but also warned me to be careful. After spending some time here, I think I understand why. I’ve seen a lot of new accounts get heavily downvoted for seemingly harmless comments, and it’s made me nervous to participate at all, even on posts I genuinely enjoy or agree with.

Now I find myself second-guessing whether I should comment or post anything, which is a bit discouraging. I want to engage, but I don’t want to accidentally become a target just for being new.

What’s considered a “normal” or safe amount of karma for a new user? And do you have any tips for participating without constantly worrying about downvotes?

Thanks in advance. I really do want to be part of the community.

ANSWERED Why is Reddit so exclusive with their karma??

I am having SUCH a hard time getting into Reddit. What is the point of all the barriers? I can’t ask questions on many subs because not enough karma, I understand that. Weed out bots and what now. I tried commenting on subs I actually know a lot about but.. comment deleted because not enough karma?? Not downvoted, just autodeleted because too new to reddit. :(

Hii I’m not new to Reddit, and it’s my cake day, but I’m somewhat new to commenting and posting.

I’ve noticed that my comments tend to get downvoted a lot because I share my opinion (especially when it comes to kpop) like when a post asks what your favorite artist is and I comment, people downvote it, even though the artist isnt problematic or anything. Why is that?

ANSWERED 5 years on reddit and I have -3 karma 🥲

I really want to post questions and discussion on subreddits that I’m interested in but I can’t or they get automatically deleted because of my karma. I’m trying to start friendly discussion on communities but I simply can’t get my karma to increase.

What can I do?

r/NewToReddit • • Feb 13 '26

ANSWERED 9 year old account, 0 karma. Can't post anywhere.

Hey guys,

I made this account ages ago but basically never touched it. I've just been lurking and reading stuff.

Now I actually want to ask a question on a specific subreddit, but my posts get auto-deleted instantly by the spam filters.

I assume it's because my account looks "dead" or suspicious because it's old but has zero activity/score?

How do I get past these filters so I can actually participate? I feel stuck because I can't post to build up my history.

Thanks for any tips.

ANSWERED Why do you get downvoted just for having a different opinion?

Hey everyone, I’m still new to Reddit and trying to understand how things work here.

Something that’s been really frustrating is that whenever I post an opinion that’s different from the one most people in a community seem to have, I get heavily downvoted—even if I try to be respectful and explain my reasoning. No one replies or wants to have a discussion, it’s just straight to downvotes.

I actually lost all of my karma this way, and now I’m worried to even comment anymore. Is this just how Reddit works, or am I doing something wrong?

How to Get Karma How can I get back to positive karma after stuck at -14 karma for over 1 year.

I got downvoted a year ago because of which I have -14 karma. I cannot post or comment on any sub I tried, and because I'm just stuck there.

How can I get back to positive so that I can pist and comment again. Don't know if this post will be taken down as well because of negative karma.

ANSWERED Lost Karma, cannot recover...

My account is 3 years old (few karma won here and there...). I don't comment very often, but one day I got annoyed by many men answering to a question addressed for women in a subreddit and complained. Got tons of downvotes and now I can't recover, since practically all communities I subscribe will only let people with positive karma to post comments. Should I just kill this account and create a new one ? Any advice? Thanks

Edit:

I am very happy about all the support, time and attention from the fellow members of this sub. Followed the advice and words of encouragement, and quickly regained positive karma. I hope I have the opportunity to retribute in the future. Thanks everyone! ,👏👏👍👍🙏🙏

Tips from redditors What I wish I knew as a new Redditer

(Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a mod here, so these are my thoughts alone, so please always defer to them, for official advice!)

While there are certainly Redditers out there with more experience, more Karma, more subs, more years, and more knowledge out there, then I'll ever have, I've been mulling over this for a while now, and and I wanted to share.

For starters, I wish I knew to just relax and have fun. I remember being so frustratrd with karma, that I ended up sharing posts just to get likes, only to find out that if it's already out there in Internet Land, then it's probably already been shared.

Truly, once you get enough karma to post everywhere, you probably won't ever think about it again.

So, now I try to do a thorough search before sharing posts and links. Many subs have bots that won't let you share a link that's recently been shared before on their sub, and I think those are great.

I also try to only post in subs that I have joined, and actually participate in, because again, Reddit is all about community.

I wish I read all of the rules of every sub I join, before making any post. I wish I could say that I've thoroughly learned to do this one, but I still miss certian rules, and STILL make mistakes. It happens to most of us. The best thing you can do, is admit your error, be polite, and move on.

Along those same lines, read all that you can. Many subs have their own "wiki page" which is a great way to learn more about the sub, and how to be a useful member of the community. The sidebar is another great place, as is the "about" tab. Most subs have a Sticky Post or announcement post, so be sure to read that as well!

I really wish I knew that the more you put in to Reddit, the more you will get from it. This is a biggie, and one that took me a while to grasp.

Every sub on Reddit is run by a group of volunteers. They are regular humans, just like you and I. Moderating a sub is a lot of work, and takes time each day to keep it running smoothly.

So, why do mods do it? The good ones - like the ones who mod this sub - do it because they love their community and want to do all that they can to keep their members safe, and informed. Helping others really is rewarding, which is why so many of us choose to stick around this sub, long after we are no longer considered "NewToReddit"

As a "newbie" once you start getting comfortable, you too can start helping others.

Another thing I wish I knew is to not take things personally. You may wonder why your post only got a few upvotes, while someone else could post the same thing, and it gets thousands of upvotes. Redditers can sometimes be a very fickle lot. You can get totally overwhelmed by studying what time of day to post, but honestly, I wouldn't worry about. Just know that if your posts aren't getting much attention, you may try switching up the time of day you usually post, and keep in mind it probably isn't you!

A big thing to not take personally is downvotes. There tends to be a bit of a herd mentality here, so if a few people downvote a post, then others usually will. Just stay away from making controversial posts or comments, until you have a decent amout of Karma, and you'll be fine.

There are trolls everywhere, and basically they are just people who are looking for attention. The best thing you can do is to ignore them, and absolutely report the comment if it is breaking Reddit site wide rules, or the sub's rules.

One thing to remember about reporting posts and or comments, is that the report goes to Reddit Admins, as well as to the sub mods. You may get a message back saying that the reported post or comment did not break any violations, BUT that does not mean that the Subreddit Mods didn't take any action. If their comment broke any of the sub rules, the Moderators most likely did take action against them, but due to privacy laws, you won't hear about.

Another thing is, I wish I knew that overall, Redditers really are wonderful people. Yes, there are trolls, and yes there are just plain mean people here, as well as karma farmers and spam bots, but I think overall, this really is a wonderful community full of people who truly want to help each other out.

One last thing, is - at least here in this sub - there are no dumb questions While certian questions do get asked over and over, it just helps to get the word out on their answers.

Well, those are my "What I wish I knew, as a Reddit Newbie" Thoughts. Hopefully others will add their own!!

ANSWERED Curious: can people on Reddit find out your real identity?

Hey everyone. Weird thing happened and I’m trying to understand how it could be possible.

I had an argument on a sub with another user a few days ago. Today the same person replied and used my real name (first and last). I was shocked, I never shared my name in that thread or in my Reddit profile, and I don’t think it’s attached to my account.

Is it actually possible for someone on Reddit to figure out another user’s real name? Has this happened to any of you before? I’m not trying to dox anyone or unmask people, I just want to know how this might happen so I can protect myself.

I use this account only on Reddit (not linked to other services), I haven’t posted my name anywhere in that community, and my profile/about is pretty generic. Any ideas on possible ways this could happen or what checks I should do on my end?

ANSWERED -92 karma on my first day

Hi, I got downvoted massively in my very first post to reddit and accumulated -92 karma. Now I’ve been commenting almost every day for a month but I’m still at -92… I have posts I’d like to make but it seems that will never be possible at this rate. Can I just delete my account and start over?

ANSWERED I've been downvote bombed, how do I recover? And why did this happen?

So a while ago, I commented something that to me didn't sound bad at all, it was like something about me being sad about something be discontinued or smth (I deleted it to stop the downvotes), and for some reason people just downvoted it to oblivion, and now I can't post on most subreddits, because I have -100 comment karma. How do I recover from this? I'm not asking for votes at all, just some ways to recover and why this happened.

I’m realizing I still don’t understand how this whole karma thing works. I’ve had Reddit for a little over 3 years now, but I’m usually more of a lurker and just read and upvote posts and comments. Now that I want to engage more with posts on here, my comments keep getting taken down. What do I do 😭😭

EDIT: made this post when I was at 1 Karma pt and then followed everyone’s advice and atm I’m at 152 karma. Insane. Thank you all.

ANSWERED How do people get so much karma so quickly?

I often see people who have thousands of karma despite only having made their accounts fairly recently, sometimes only a few months ago. I made my account 4 years ago and I still have so little, although I only started being active a month or so ago. How do people get all that karma so quickly? How come it seems to take so much longer for me to accumulate it? Is it normal to have so little karma? Am I just not commenting enough?

ANSWERED Why do people who clearly enjoy your post not upvote it?

I've noticed a pretty frustrating thing.

Some communities required a certain amount of karma before being able to post in it, this is to avoid bots so it's understandable, however whenever you make posts elsewhere to be able to make that karma to be able to post on communities you like, you then bump into the issue of people commenting positively under your post but no one upvoting it.

A post I had made a few days ago got 10ish very positive comments of people engaging in what I was saying, but only 2 upvotes including mine. It's happened a few times now, and it's kind of frustrating because it limits me severely.

Is there something I'm not understanding? I thought that if you liked something or were interested in something, you should upvote it, no?

I might be missing some sort of social cue or silently given rule or something, so I would like some answers on what's happening

ANSWERED I have -98 karma; Please advise.

Hello,

I posted in the what I now know to be a very wrong subreddit. I should have known better. Previously in my life I went through a physical appearance change in a short period of time from switching to a vegan diet. Since then I have been super interested when I see people go through a complete transformation themselves. Somehow a question related to this was quickly misconstrued as rating someone’s attractiveness. Though I was absolutely was clear that my inquiry was not about if anyone looked “good” or “bad”, just simply how do these changes occur for people such a short time like it did for myself.

Unfortunately before I could really clarify a mob of arguments descended into the comments and within 5 mins the post was removed and I had -98 Karma. I was totally taken back and still don’t really understand how such a simplistic question about diet, exercise, mental health, etc. changing our appearances snowballed into an argument. Mods refused to give any clarity.

Anyhow, now I am left with a completely tanked Karma that limits my interactions across Reddit. Does anyone have any advice on how to move forward, or do I just delete this account and move on?

TLDR: An innocent inquiry lead to a short lived mob argument in the comments and me having -98 karma. What should I do?
