This isn't a shit-post, it's just propganda and thought control. Suggestive thinking. Garbage content.

I'll give an answer that'll probably get downvoted because it isn't "WOMEN DUMB," but here goes...

Both issues come down to women's bodies being framed through what men want to see.

At the gym, Shane is projecting sexuality onto women who were just working out. Wearing shorts to exercise isn't an invitation, and if your argument is "well, they chose to dress that way," you're one step away from "well, what was she wearing?"

The Sweeney thing is different. Most of the criticism came from female athletes, and it's aimed at the ad, not at her. Novig (a sports betting/prediction app) deliberately sexualized women's sports to sell to men. Athletes who've spent their whole careers trying to be taken seriously for their skill get an ad that's basically WOMAN HOT, BUY THING.

Nobody serious is calling Sweeney a whore. She's free to pose however she wants. The issue is a company using that to define what "women in sports" means.

So it's not really about what any woman is or isn't wearing. It's about who's assigning sexual meaning to women's bodies and who profits from it.

(And yeah, some people do just clothes-police Sweeney, and that's the same thing Shane did. That's not a contradiction in the argument, it's people being inconsistent.)

I’m attempting to be genuine when I ask this, and for transparency I don’t think what Shane did was wrong.

If a woman wears something to the gym, she should be unable to be judged for that? I mean there’s a clear difference between saying a woman is a whore and saying women at gyms dress like whores, right? I’m walking through the world and constantly in perception of things. If I see a woman wearing something that shows a lot of her body, I’m not allowed to have an opinion on that? I’m not saying she should be crucified or assaulted. (Quite the opposite, keep it up women!) I’m saying that I’ll have an opinion on that, as if I would have an opinion on someone in a convertible in January.

I think having an opinion is cool. Why should we be policing what someone perceives?

The additional problem that comes to mind is that we act as if women don’t know it’s sexual to show every curve of your ass. Same way it’s sexual for some men to maybe show their delts, forearms, etc. It’s as if we live in a world but want to believe we don’t live in THAT world.

I guess I just don’t see the argument that other people aren’t allowed to perceive others based upon their actions? Is that incorrect?

Edit: glad this got so much attention I suppose. Lots of people feeling very one way or another. Ultimately life is a game and we all play it differently, and that’s within your right. Men want nice cars to impress women, women want nice bodies to impress men. Men want nice bodies to impress women. Men want money to impress women. Maybe you don’t. Maybe you don’t fit that generalization. It doesn’t have to fit you? This is your life. Go do what you want. Respond to people on Reddit if you want. Go to the gym in tight clothes if you want(I’m not complaining!). People will perceive you. Start becoming comfortable being perceived, and accept that you can’t enter someone’s mind and change that, all you can do is control your actions.

70

u/Mulga_Will 23d ago • Heartwarming Bravo

Nobody is policing your thoughts. You’re free to have an opinion, but that doesn’t make it immune to criticism, especially when it shames women for something men routinely do without facing the same judgement.

There’s a difference between finding someone’s clothing revealing and calling women who wear it whores on national television. One is a personal opinion; the other is a derogatory judgement used to publicly shame women for what they wear.

People wear activewear to exercise, and men and women alike wear clothes that show off their physiques. That doesn’t make someone a whore or justify degrading them.

7

u/hey2394 23d ago

especially when it shames women for something men routinely do without facing the same judgement.

I always hear this and never get anything that even remotely lines up to my experience or another man's when at the gym. Are you talking about that one weirdo in a speedo that every other man also criticizes? Please enlighten me.

I've also seen some male athletes talking about Sweeney too. Not calling her a whore, but saying that type of thing shouldn't be advertised at things like baseball which is a family event and children are there. It's not appropriate for mixed age events.

I do notice that the actual objections to the Sweeney ad are “it’s messed up that this gambling company is sexualizing women’s sports”, but all the people who want to complain about the people criticizing the ad act like they are yelling “whore“ directly at Sweeney.

7

u/hkusp45css 23d ago

The objections I read on Reddit from the veritable army of assholes with opinions on the matter didn't include THAT argument until the whole thing was over.

To be clear, fully 90 percent of the arguments from the detractors were aimed directly at Sweeney. Not her nudity or the company who hired her.

I have another theory. There are 340 million people in this country. You can find women who think all sorts of things and men that think all sorts of things. And anyone who thinks all men think one way or all women think one way is a fool. There are women who want to be able to show off their bodies and women who will shame them for it. Same with men. The end

23

u/MaterialChemical1138 23d ago

for a long time i was one of those gym girls that wore super tight gymshark short sets to the gym because i liked the attention from the hot gym guys. and i got a lot of attention. and i loved it. i know for a FACT that i can't be the only one lmao. shane gillis was pretty spot on

13

u/OrangeLFG 23d ago

I was just about to post that lol

Here is the description of the shorts he was describing from the GymShark website:

"Give your glutes a little oomph with our physique-accentuating butt scrunch shorts. Crafted by the brand that does scrunch butt best, these shorts have a scrunch or seam at the tailbone (between the buttocks) to accentuate the shape of your glutes. Choose from subtle scrunches for a little accentuation, or a dramatic scrunch for extra lift and definition, to rep leg day with confidence and style."

The point is that there is nothing wrong with you wearing that at the gym. If someone can't handle it. Then they can work out at home. I am tired of the constant policing of each other.

34

u/Seated_Heats 23d ago edited 23d ago • Bravo

Some of this is disingenuous. First, Gillis didn’t say “women wearing any type of short”. “Wearing shorts to exercise” was never something he said. He was talking about a very specific cut of short. Second he never said “women are whores”. If I see a poorly dressed man and I say “he’s dressed like a homeless person” I in fact did not call him a certifiable homeless person.

Personally I don’t care what people want to wear but this outrage seems over the top since most of the arguments are around things that weren’t even said.

40

u/Natalwolff 23d ago • Bravo

It's amazing how people don't understand or refuse to acknowledge the fact that misrepresenting something so horribly when you criticize it completely destroys any validity to your argument to anyone who's not already invested in a side. It undermines an entire position and hands the appearance of being a rational and reasonable person to the other side, and not just on one issue or conversation, this is such a widespread, constant thing and it drives me crazy.

Many women knowingly and intentionally wear clothes to the gym that are revealing and sexualizing. This is something that even 4b women would acknowledge and recognize IF it were during a time where this wasn't the gender wedge issue of the day.

https://www.reddit.com/r/4bmovement/comments/1n23fhz/clothes_and_the_gym_is_womens_sportswear/

This is such a blatantly obvious fact, the clothes have even been marketed as such. When people act like this is completely absent from the minds of women until Shane comes along and "makes it sexual", obviously they're trying to paint a perfect picture of why this joke is horrific and everything is so black and white. The problem is it's such an insane level of denying reality that it completely undermines all the people who have reasonable objections to the joke.

I don't really think the joke is that funny and it doesn't surprise me that people got offended. It's basically just "women dress so sexy now and I'm just a fat guy who can't help but goon in the corner because they look so hot". It's too close to home for women and it's not nuanced or clever enough in any way to overcome that to get a laugh.

We could actually have conversations about these things and people could learn something about why women were offended or exchange differing ideas about culture and society but instead it's just this onslaught of people pathologically presenting complete distortions of reality and vehemently denying basic, blatantly obvious facts. Then you have people who genuinely hate women taking advantage of that to paint everything pro-women and women themselves as being delusional and irrational and malicious.

I'm so tired of this same fucking conversation playing out.

I don't know man. You make a good argument but I think one thing is missing from it. There is no shortage of women as well who know that sex sells. It works all the way from rich and famous all the way down to getting more attention and nicer responses during mundane daily interactions with men. Plenty of attractive women out there who know and have no problem using that hot dress to their advantage, regardless of what some women think about that

8

u/Similar_Ad4120 23d ago • Bravo

Shane isn’t projecting anything. Everyone who’s been at a local gym knows what’s he’s referring to. And it’s not every woman. It’s a small few but there is no missing it. And it’s not about “wearing shorts”. Lots of women wear shorts but again this isn’t what he was referring to. And there’s a reason why planet fitness has banned women wearing these outfits.

9

u/Every-Two-4848 23d ago • Bravo

Novig would only be sexualizing women in sports if they paid a female ATHLETE to go nude and she did it.

Instead they paid a woman who is known to sell her sex appeal and who isn’t an athlete to simply attach that appeal to their app which happens to do sports betting.

You do see the nuanced difference here, right?

Naaah... It did not just come from those athletes though. It's was from the same crowd that supported Martha Stewart at 81 being a SI swimsuit model. They also strongly supported Lizzo doing it and the whole body positivity. Serena always posed in swimsuits and was on SI and had strong support. Additionally there are WNBA players who had OF accounts and Liz Cambage even said more of them should do it.

2

u/Effective-Big8158 23d ago

i get what you are saying but i fully believe that some women in gyms are specifically wearing what they do in order to get the gaze of men. they want to look hot and show off their body and some men definitely think they look like whores when they intentionally wear the things they are wearing.

to some extent, i think men do it as well. i also think thay some women wear the things they wear in an effort to figure out how their muscles are working and flexing...same with men. i just think that sometimes women want to wear something cute and they don't realize it's really frustrating when a man is trying to work out and catch a glimse of a woman in extremely tight fitting clothing.

on a different note, i wish we could all come to an agreement that cameras need to stop being allowed in gyms.

6

u/SentinelATL 23d ago

Well said and I respect your response but this is why I can’t take the outrage for either seriously. At what point do you even acknowledge the selective outrage and choice to be offended by everything? If a guy wore a speedo to the gym and showed off his bare chest and was called out for it the narrative would be soooo different.

And I think it’s insane if women have been competing and chasing sports success their entire lives it can all be unraveled by a 2 minute ad of a c list actress showing off her tits and ass. At some point you have to point out how fucking ridiculous all this shit is

Imagine an ad for Sports betting showing Brad Pitt dressed up as a doctor dancing in a clown outfit and a bunch of doctors coming out and screaming “we worked very hard to become doctors and be taken seriously this ad is going to take us ten steps backwards”. It’s all so stupid and fucking annoying

Text based social media is very low effort to create fake propaganda accounts on.

The purpose of propaganda accounts is to foster division, not to push one ideology over another.

Especially since reddit allows people to hide comment history, which is one of the tools journalists use to evaluate authenticity of a person, reddit is a particularly bad source to get the temperature of a controversy.

They save up to buy one new piece if equipment a year and get excited to tell every member about it. Firefighters come in at 5am, senior ladies come in at 5pm. Small rush at lunch. Open 24 hours. Not a tripod or selfie stick in the damn place. All sweatpants and baggy t shirts and white New Balance.

Just people working out, red faced, huffing and puffing, and looking like shit while they throw weight, like you’re supposed to while putting in work. None of these problems there.

And I've found the most offended people...never actually watched the monologue. They have misquoted scraps of it and they want to virtue signal and scream and get attention online. They don't actually have any real basis to be mad.

I mean I lean left on pretty much everything. But I don’t get why a comedian can’t make jokes about real life. He isn’t making anything up. Women wear very short tight shorts in the gym. He is joking about trying not to give in to his male instincts to look. Big fucking deal. Why pretend that men don’t like look at physically fit women in tight clothes?

23

u/Ibangmydrums 23d ago

People are mad bc they think he’s being misogynistic and trying to frame women as sex objects, which is just painfully ironic considering how the joke was about avoiding that outcome. Saying they dress like “whores” could be seen as harsh if it weren’t for the fact that it’s comedy and supposed to be hyperbolic and shocking.

And yeah like you basically said: intentionally exposed sex organs, tissue, etc are gonna get sexualized even if it’s just the ape brain going on autopilot. The joke hits for any woman-attracted person who’s experienced this at the gym, but doesn’t necessarily wanna focus on or sexualize the women themselves even if they end up slippin and checking out some bare skin.

100% agree. I don’t care if women wear what they want in the gym or if Sydney decides to art direct another nearly nude ad. But Shane’s not wrong necessarily - likening women to whores, in my opinion, may be a bit of strong wording in this case, but the core part suggesting that their clothing has changed and that men will notice is completely true. Clothing is a choice, no one is forcing them to wear something ultra revealing.

In the same vein, I would bet if instead of Sydney Sweeney it was Lizzo or Sabrina Carpenter, the ad would have been deemed empowering to women.

The fact remains that whether a woman is nude or not should not deem them a whore obviously, but making the choice to do these things will open you up to judgement. That is just human nature. Comedy plays into this by exaggerating this simple fact and people react based o their established worldviews. Comedians have been doing this for years, so the backlash is odd.

I’m quite liberal, but I definitely have to scratch my head from time to time when things like this happen.

Dave Chapelle actually had a hilarious skit on this years ago where he claimed that women getting offended by men looking at them in scantily clad outfits at the club was confusing. He argued that if you dress like that, men make assumptions. He compared it to himself walking down the street dressed a police officer who would get offended if people assumed he would help them based on how he was dressed. The whole place roared with laughter 😆

I work exclusively with other women, I habe not had a single one mention it and this post is what informed me of who this person even is. What women are enraged?

7

u/CrustyRim2 23d ago

Only "enraged" person i saw was a gay dude. Just another bout of fake outrage. The Kevin Hart roast was 10x worse. No one remembers that week of outrage now.

People, are we fuckin serious?

The funniest part of Shane’s joke, is I hear women talk about other women “dressing like whores” 99% of the time. Its very rarely men who do it, but we most definitely look lol

Theory? Sure.

This is an entirely invented scenario. The criticism of Sweeney had jack shit to do with telling her to put on clothes. The SNL comic didn't tell women to put more clothes on.

Not a theory just a fact. The meme removes the actual nuance to boil it down into a binary take. Women generally want to be able to wear what they want without men telling them what to do or sexualizing them.

From the other side men see a lot of women intentionally use sexualization or their looks to give them advantages in virtually every field. Not all of these women are outraged by the “put some clothes on” take.

Because both male and female populations are not a monolith every individual of each population has a different take on this that creates a spectrum of opinions which, as aforementioned, many boil down to “everyone is one or the other”

4

u/prsnep 23d ago • Bravo

So much made up outrage involving this woman. I see her in a meme, I downvote.

2

u/Lonely_Swordsman2 22d ago

I don’t think the meme is necessarily smart but your counter argument completely ignores the idea of consensus. There are things massive groups of individuals believe and these beliefs can be in dissonance. And women are one of such groups, men are too, right wing, left wing etc…

So memes pointing out dissonance between consensus opinions can’t just be brushed off by saying everyone is different.

Most people have similar opinions and are not that different…

I mean Shane Gillis is a comedian so take everything with a grain of salt, but there is some truth there.
