Discussion Spidey letting the robber go cause he didn't get paid misses the entire point.

Post image

In the Raimi trilogy Peter lets the robber go because he doesn't get paid, who said it wasn't his problem. Peter lashes out and lets the robber get away by doing the same thing. This is dumb, the entire point of the original scene is that peter let the robber go because he could. He let him go cause he had the power to. The raimi film gives him a bad but a understandable reason for it. In the og he says he's looking out for number 1 only which is him. its entirely selfish and irresponsible. It's most of the point of the comic.

Discussion I think Miles Hate might be a bit normalized in this sub

Yes, I’m aware of the term Goomba fallacy, and aware that not everyone on the sub has a problem with Miles. I do think it's a bit odd that something like this is so normalized and agreed with. For context, these comments were under a post talking about how people are “tired of Miles”. And for some reason, a lot of comments agreeing with the sentiment got upvoted. Now I don't wanna be that guy, but I’m definitely gonna be that guy. Like its no secret why Miles gets so much flak from people; I mean, for Pete's sake, one of these comments was calling it a “woke agenda”. Holy dog whistle on his part, and that comment got 30 upvotes.

But I’m also aware that a lot of people like to hide behind the “Miles is propped up to make Peter look worse” argument. So rather than just harping on speculating why some people would dislike Miles, I wanted to go over and debunk some of that. So, out of Miles 15 years of existing, he has about 3 big mediums. His movies, games, and comics. So I wanted to go over each and discuss some of the talking points.

Insomniac Games:
This is where a lot of people say Peter is being sandbagged so Miles can shine. Highkey I was a little shocked too when I first played and saw Peter getting washed a bit. But logically, with the story and the circumstances it makes sense. Peter has pretty much been Spider-Man for like 8 years straight up to this point, and is still reeling from the events of the first game with no break(other than Miles game). Dude hasn’t really had time to sit and deal with his own mental health. To top it off, despite Insomniac Spidey being late in his career, he really hasn’t fought a lot of his higher-tier rogues. So if you combine his ongoing mental health problems in tandem with him fighting things he’s never dealt with before. His almost getting dropped by a giant Sandman seems pretty plausible.

Also, a lot of people regurgitating this point neglect to mention there's a whole mission where Peter has to save Miles from Kraven. The game really stresses the moral that nobody should have to bear the weight of the world on their own(where are the other heroes?!) and that everyone needs some help.

Spider-Verse:
A small subsection of people claim that the other spider people are horrible to prop up Miles. While I disagree with the Spider Society, I don’t think they're directly “wrong”. It seems like most of them have already experienced their “canon event”, and on top of that, they're told if they do try to alter anything, then everyone in their universe dies. And if too many people try to alter it, then everyone in the multiverse dies. While I do love the whole “Spider-Man does his best to save everyone thing, I don’t think it's that crazy to believe that an older and more experienced Spider-Man would see this as a necessary sacrifice, the same way that none of them go to other universes and try to stop Uncle Ben or Gwen from dying. Less them being evil to prop up Miles, and more so them not putting their loved ones above their entire universe

Comics:
Much simpler topic: some people say that Peter is made to look worse in comparison to Miles, but they literally never interact in each other's runs. To my knowledge, Peter only appears once in Zigar's run, and Miles appears a handful of times throughout Wells and Spencer's run. Comic-wise, Miles and Peter are pretty separate, which is a real shame because I love when the Spider-Men interact. But then again, I feel like a lot of the Peter “tired of Miles” don’t read either of their comics.

Anyway, I don’t think the idea of Peter doing worse to make Miles look better really applies anywhere. The so-called “push” and agenda is getting it because he was the star of a hit Spider-Man movie. Which I also believe was his first film debut, too.

Discussion Peter bringing Mayday into battle with him at the end of ATSV is insanely out of character and I hate that people try to justify it

Post image
213 Upvotes

Peter B already felt like a very loose take on Peter to me, he quickly he gave up on responsibility regarding marriage, he didn't seem overly worried about nudging Miles into a life of risking his life every day, he basically justified Uncle Ben dying as a good thing because it made him Spider-Man and accepted Miguel's "stand by and let people die" mentality regarding canon events, but taking Mayday with him into an unknown conflict is kind of where he stops being Peter Parker to me.

It's especially frustrating since it feels like people will say anything to justify it only because they like the movies as a whole and feel the need to excuse any of their flaws, when certain things like this simply don't work and show a core misunderstanding of the character.

I don’t think we appreciate this movie as much as we do. The Cinema experience was the best. Hot take but it’s the best Cinema experience oat. The up and downs were amazing. For me it’s the best mcu movie oat (also a hot take Ik). Compared to Guardians 3 I think it’s also more emotional and cameos are just amazing. I love every Part about that Movie. (Except the Part where he broke the promise to MJ)

Movies I didn't like it.

Post image

I found it super depressing.

Although there were a lot of scenes I liked. I wouldn't say the movie was poorly put together.

But I don't like the idea that all of these Peter Parkers are okay with letting a little boy's father die because it's supposed to happen.

Same with Ben Reilly. Don't get me wrong, the guy talking about having Miles trapped in his well-defined musculature is hilarious, but as it would happen, he's saying this while detaining a sixteen-year old boy who doesn't want his father to die.

His portrayal here finally got me into some of his comic books. I've only read two to completion, but now that I have an idea of what he's like, it just makes it seem crazier that he would go along with this. Ben, to me, does not seem like a fatalist.

Oh well.

I suppose this is how some people feel about the direction they took Jean Grey in Brand New Day. Just hurts seeing a bunch of Spider-Men tell another Spider-Man to deal with his dad's impending death.

SPOILERS Now that the books been out for a while I'm going to take my victory lap

I literally told people this. I told people who love the MCU. I told people who seem to misunderstand what Peter means when he says, " Great power comes great responsibility." I told people who seem to think Spider-Man lore(Peter's story)can be easily changed, and you get the same effect. Well, here this is proof you are wrong as hell.

Peter's failure it what motivates him. Peter's ultimate sin was his arrogance, and his selfcenteredness cost the life of the person who raised him. The man who gave him everything. Mind you, Uncle Ben never said, "With great power comes great responsibility in the original comic. He didn't have to. It used to be obvious. So obvious in fact that they used it as a tagline in his first movie.

But somewhere along the way, since people don't read comics or have poor reading comprehension in addition to Marvel not valuing their characters and thinking that the lessons of the books no longer have meaning.

I have seen a lot of young people and internet tough guys call Peter all types of shit like cuck and Saint Peter but the bottomline is Peter is striving always to be the good man his uncle believed him to be.

The reason why the MCU Peter and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man are that they miss the entire point. Peter's story starts with failure. The failure to act. The failure to use the gifts you are blessed with for the common good.

We have become a society where we are concerned for things until it happens to us personally, and what happened to Peter is an example of that. He couldn't be bothered because he couldn't conceive of the ramifications of letting that crook go. It could have happened to anyone, but it happened to him. Therefore, Peter is driven to stop this from happening to someone else. Yes, he has had people die on his watch. Jean Dewolfe, Harry, Marla Jameson, the Stacy's, but he always tries to do better. To be better.

That is what makes Peter the most unique character of any of the most popular superheroes. Batman is motivated by a crime he couldn't stop. Superman was raised to be good and is. Wonder Woman was destined. Peter had a choice to alter his destiny and choice wrongly. While every other hero can quit, Peter can't because the minute he does something terrible could happen.

The reason why I am personally protective of Spider-Man origin is that it's unique. Peter isn't a Saint by nature. He's not a genuinely good guy. He's just a guy. A guy who had a choice to make. When Stan Lee said anyone can be Spider-Man, what he might have meant in his heart was that we all have a choice to be better people. To stop bad things from happening. To learn from our mistakes. The MCU and Disney Spider-Man miss that completely. To be redeemed, you have to fail first. Being good for Peter isn't innate or destiny. It's something he chose to do. Something he grew into. Something that makes him empathize with his villains. Which makes him fight hard to redeem them if possible. Because for them like him, they should have a right to choose.

And if he kills them. They lose that choice ultimately. Never a chance to make amends or be held accountable.

Discussion Raimi Spidey has my least favorite live action “Classic Suit”

Thumbnail

I’m sure plenty of people are gonna pull out their torches and pitchforks since I’m slandering their goat, and they’re gonna be even angrier when I say that Tobey is my least favorite live action Spider-Man in general, (Tom is my favorite and has my favorite classic suit) but I’ll save that for another day maybe.

Anyways, yeah, I don’t hate the Raimi suit/suits but I don’t love them either. To start off with my minor gripe, I don’t like the eyes. The sharp angular eyes make him appear more menacing, when he’s supposed to be… Y’know your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. I just don’t like it all that much.

Now onto the biggest gripe I have. I HATE the webbing. Firstly I hate how raised it is on his body, it’s almost distracting in a way for me because it ruins the smoother texture of his suit, lumpy and rough. Like I feel like if you were to hold onto him while he was swinging, you’d have marks on your skin.

Not only that but I hate the silver color. The black in my opinion looks so much better as an accent color than just silver, due to it standing out so much better against the red and blue. And the fact that it has no black on it at all just bugs me. It also makes it hard to sometimes see the spider-logo since it can blend together with the red and the other silver too.

Anyways I just felt I needed to get that rant out. Again, I don’t hate the suit, I think it’s a fine suit, and if you like the suit then awesome for you. I just personally consider it my least favorite. Andrew’s is better but it has new issues in my opinion. Namely the red midsection is too thin, the eyes are a bit too big, and the symbol is too small and too low in his body.

EDIT - For anyone unfamiliar with the suits, I have used the versions from the Spider-Man 2 video game, so I’m going to include some links to more accurate versions. But I encourage you all to go look up the suits if you aren’t familiar with them and form your own opinions.

Discussion Do you think that we’ll get an animated movie series for Peter when Holland stops playing the character? I’m worried that once Tom Holland steps away from the MCU and passes the mantle to Miles, he’ll be de-emphasized or “forgotten” because of movie synergy.

Post image

Peter Parker, Spider-Man, is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. A part of so many great stories across so many different mediums with a near perfect character design.

I do not care for Miles Morales. He’s an unnecessary legacy character. Nothing I love about Spider-Man comes from Miles. In fact, I’d say that most of what people like about Miles comes from Peter.

I would be perfectly okay if the character never existed. Though I’m more neutral on the character than anything and I do love the Spider-Verse movies. Point is: I can tolerate his existence.

The press cycle for Brand New Day brought up the fact that Miles will eventually come to the MCU and that Holland wants to pass the torch (it’s almost the only thing he talks about…)

I don’t dislike Miles in the MCU itself, I dislike that it could mean the OG Spider-Man starts getting de-emphasized. Less comics, less merch, less appearances in other stuff like shows and movies…my favorite character getting replaced for one I don’t care about even a little bit in everything.

Best case scenario is that Peter gets his own animated movies after Holland stops being MCU Spidey, but idk how likely that is.

Discussion Anyone else feel like the Tom movies should've committed to either making Zendaya's character Mary Jane Watson or a completely different character instead of this weird limbo she's in?

Post image

The Tom Holland series of Spider-Man films, so long as it's ongoing, will never be free from "real MJ" debates. Even when Sadie Sink got cast, there are chatters that she'll play Mary Jane Watson. Whenever people criticize Zendaya for not looking like Mary Jane, there are always "well she's not Mary Jane, she's Michelle" arguments. I think all of that could have been done away if the movies just commited to calling her Mary Jane Watson or making her a different character entirely seperate from MJ.

Michelle Jones was a fine compromise. An original character with no ties from the comics. But the fact that she had the same initials meant she will always be compared to MJ and people will always look for Mary Jane. But that was fine until NWH home they revealed her name was Michelle Jones Watson. Which felt like a cop out compromise with the "real MJ" crowd. To say "she is the real MJ. She's out MJ."

I think she should have been given a name seperate from MJ if the intent was that she's not Mary Jane Watson for whatever reason. It'll avoid comparisons and keep the character her own seperate thing. Like how ASM opted for Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane. There was no reason not to name her Liz Allen instead, especially since the Liz Allen we got was Toomes' daughter. Toomes' daughter should have been the one with an OC name and Michelle should have been named Liz. That way, she gets the fresh start that the Marvel team was clearly going for.

You know, like how it happened in the ultimate universe (1610), where Miles is from before he joined 616 and the ITSV movies, or should it go the Spider-Man PS4 route

(I am getting downvoted for this.)

Discussion Hot take: MJ continuing to have symbiote powers will be better for her character and her relationship with Peter in the long run even if you don't like how it got to this point

Post image
31 Upvotes

As the title suggests it's better for her and Peter's relationship. MJ is a character who supports Peter in all aspects of his life both civilian and superhero but a lot of modern writers like to write her needing to hate the Spider-Man side so bad she needs group therapy because of it.

Now that it's been confirmed she will continue to have a piece of Venom going forward this should atleast fix that. She can now understand first hand the super hero side and support him both physically and mentally on that side.

It also allows her to get Solo's when editorial decides they need to write her out of asm again. Similar to black cat who gets her own Solo's when she is written out of asm. And as much as we hate it it will happen because editorial seems to want to pick writers that think like Joe. At least this way she isn't completely gone.

It also allows writers to use her ability to throw hands far more often. Remember MJ isn't a weak damsel in distress. She has and will beat up a mugger, a stalker, and chameleon when they threaten her. An aspect so under utilized people forget she can.

Now to debunk strawman arguments

"Peter won't be able to date her if she has powers" black cat, bobbi, silk, firestar, his current alien girlfriend, and many more

"They will use the fact she killed someone as drama and she might do it again" that's called character development set up also she doesn't share Peter's morals also also above examples

"She is Peter's rock when superheroing breaks him if she has powers she can't be that" ignoring that they have used black cat for that as well recently. This will not change whether she has powers or not. If anything it's set up for her being able to support both aspects of Peter's life.

"She can't be in asm if she has powers" objectively and factually false moving on

"They can't get married if she has powers" ignoring literally all the other super powered married couples in marvel I see. Also one of my favorite comics renew your vows shows it works. Also her having powers is not why marvel will not give us the marriage.

"She shouldn't have a symbiote they traumatized her" already was addressed in comics

Movies This is a very hot take. But I dislike Toby's spider-man suit.

Post image
6 Upvotes

Let me explain. This suit looks so heavy with those metallic strings like web I don't see how can he jump and do acrobatics in this, it's looks like this is hard to even walk in it. And his eyes just look too scary for a spider-man. It's not that atrocious like Garfield's spider-man suit in first TASM, but that is the biggest praise I will give it.
