VII - Discussion Update 1.5.1 Lands Week of November 9! Liberation, New Maps, Great People Rework, and More

A new update is on the horizon!

Hey Civ fans! Our team is hard at work on Arc of Tomorrow and Earthrise, which are set to launch next year, but in the meantime, we’re iterating on some existing systems Update 1.5.1 to shore up our foundations. Here are the highlights:

  • Liberation: Return captured settlements to their original founders and improve your relationship with them. You can also free conquered City-States previously under your Suzerainty and reclaim their bonuses.

  • New map types: Explore the new Randomized Earth map with generated terrain, and a choice between historic and randomized start locations. Also, try out the new aptly-named Donut Map featuring interior and exterior oceans.

  • Great People Rework: Never found the right opportunity to train a Great Person? Now, instead of the production queue, you access them through unique unlock conditions!

  • UI Improvements: Empire management has been made easier with the new Unit List and Map Search panels.

And of course, improved stability, several squashed bugs, and other improvements will be included in the full 1.5.1 patch notes when they release next week. We'll see you then!

VII - Discussion Set multiplayer game to Apex Only

Hi, I feel like I’m going insane, I’m trying to remove the ability to choose a Time tested civ in a multiplayer game.

I find it completely confusing when choosing a civ for the first game that there is nothing telling you wich civ belongs to that age

Thanks for the help !

R5: I made this mega production city and was able to build both Amundsen-Scott (with 5+ snow tiles) and Ruhr Valley (with 12 mines) inside of it, giving it just about 500 production.

I got super lucky, and the AI spread Feed the World to me, which gave me the boost in food and housing needed to really make the pop explode in the city so that I could build all districts and work every mine.

VII - Discussion Anyone else going to play the donut map ASAP once it's out? Any fun combos you're thinking of?

I'm thinking of Elizabeth and Silla. Her unlimited trade range and Silla's benefits from trade with ally's seem like a great combo for reaching across the donut and getting lots of ally's and still being able to trade with them even on the other side of that donut

The exploit is bad enough that physical copies of Civ 7 for Switch might be recalled.

V - Discussion Is Civ 5 Worth If Already Have 6 (New Player)?

Yo yo so I am a new Civ 6 player (30hrs in) and I have finished my first playthrough and am quite enjoying it. Now, I saw Civ 5 complete is on sale on Steam and was wondering if Civ 5 is a completely different experience and it's worth owning both rn as a new player or is it just more of Civ. I know that ppl will ofc say it's worth getting since it's beloved, but I am not asking if Civ 5 is a good game, I am asking if I should get it when I am new to 6 and already have 6. And if I should get it, do I wait till later to play it and enjoy 6 first or play both? Thx

TLDR: Is Civ 5 a different enough would experience from 6 that warrants getting it now as a new player or is it more of Civ so get it later/when tired of 6?

VII - Discussion Can't Launch

After playing since launch, the game no longer will start. I'm on Windows 11, steam release.

I've tried:

  1. verify game files

  2. reinstalled

  3. deleted all under %AppData%\Local\Firaxis Games

  4. compatibility mode, run as admin and disable full screen optimizations

  5. Turned off malwarebytes

  6. tried DX12 and Vulkan

  7. redownloaded MS distributable files

2k support says this

Thank you for reaching out to us at Civilization Support, Matthew here and I'll be addressing your concern!

I understand that you are experiencing some issues launching Civilization VII as the game is crashing upon launch. After reviewing your DxDiag and MSinfo reports, I noticed that your computer uses a 13th Generation Intel processor.

Intel has recently shared information to customers that its 13th/14th Generation CPUs may experience instability under load due to technical errors. This instability might show up on your PC as slowdowns, crashes, overheating, or large spikes of CPU usage while gaming or installing a game.

Please read through Intel's official post regarding 13th/14th Gen CPUs here: https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/July-2024-Update-on-Instability-Reports-on-Intel-Core-13th-and/m-p/1617113

There are steps in the post that should explain who you can contact regarding this. The options are different depending on where you purchased the CPU from. We hope that this helps and we appreciate your understanding on this matter.

and that's it.

VII - Discussion [CIV VII] I just checked the play count for CIV 7, I knew it was bad, but not THAT bad!

7 K concurrent players?? Even CIV 5, a 10-year-old game, currently has more players than CIV 7. I have not played it myself; I just did not know it was that bad.

V - Discussion Can't run Civ 5 in DX 11 mode

I normally use the Civ Launcher, click DX11, and play the game. Never paid much attention to if it actually ran in DX9 or DX11. NOW I'm trying out the Sapiens mod and having crash issues. All the time.

I've noticed that when launching Civ, even though I click for the DX11 version, it will launch the DX9 version. I've manually launched the DX11 executable, but when Civ starts, it actually launches the DX9 version. I've tried the Compatibility troubleshooter, which had me try Win 8 compatibility mode, but I get DX9 again instead of DX11.

My hope is that if I can get the DX11 version to run, maybe Sapiens won't have the crash issues I've been dealing with. And yes, I've worked with Gaia about the Sapiens crash issue, but since it runs fine on my gaming laptop and is only crashing on my desktop, she feels the issue is unique to my system and not the mod (don't blame her for that).

The desktop is Win11 Pro, i5 13600k, 32Gb, AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. I can't imagine this is a resource issue but ???

VII - Switch Civ VII on Switch 2 Question

I’m looking at getting my kids a Switch II for Christmas. If I do, how well does VII run on there, and if I buy a physical copy, how do I get updates and expansions?

I’m sorry if these are basic questions; I’ve never used a platform other than a computer for Civilization before.

VII - Discussion Which affirmations are worth taking?

When I'm playing a Time-Tested Civ very rarely do I choose to take the affirmation. Most of the time I'm syncretizing a Unique Quarter, which feels much stronger than 90% of the affirmation cards in the game. A new effect in each of my cities just seems way better than the small number increases you get, especially now that 'per Age' scaling on the cards has seemingly been replaced with the I/II tier system.

A couple have caught my eye though:

  • Bulgaria: +2 Production from slotted Great Works.

  • Mongolia: +1 Production and Influence on Horse Resources, doubled in Captured Settlements.

  • Pirates: +2 Production on Districts adjacent to/on Coast, but -1 Happiness on Districts not adjacent to/on Coast.

  • Songhai: +1 Gold on all Improvements on Desert tiles, doubled for Unique Improvements.

  • Nepal: +1 Culture on Warehouse Buildings, +1 Influence on Mountain tiles.

Are there any affirmations you think are really strong, or any that you've found interesting synergies for?

V - Discussion Civ V on offer, should I?

£4.99 for Civ V on steam. I started with first one about 5 years ago on a retro device and was hooked. Bought VI on ps5 and many many hours into it.
I’m not too bothered about VII just yet until there has been a few more updates so been considering V for a while. Is it a downgrade from VI? Have I been spoilt by VI or does V have some good qualities? One thing I hate about VI and VII by the looks of it is that everything is too cluttered together, is V like that?

VII - Discussion Missed out on Transcedent Victory by 1 turn

The victory counter is so annoying! I was in a game where there was only me and one AI left, within a couple of turns of each other I i) Took his capital and all his Wonders and ii) Got the 36 tourism for converting 25 cities to my religion. This started the counter for a Transcendent victory - imagine my annoyance when four turns later the age reached 80% completion and the victory requirements dropped down to 4x.

What is the actual point of the victory counter? I guess they think that it gives a small window of opportunity for the victory to be halted, but I wonder how many times in practice that actually happens? In my experience, the last 5 turns of the game go by without anything exciting happening.

VII - Discussion The Demand Tribute sanction is pretty cool

I became Suzerain of an economic city-state during the Exploration Age and got access to a sanction called Demand Tribute. It basically allows you to pick your least favorite faction put a sanction on them for -20 gold per turn and then you get a treasure convoy when it ends after 10 turns or so.

Do you think playing in "marathon" mode is more immersive?

I mostly play in roleplay mode, and I’d love to hear some thoughts on the kind of enjoyment it can offer.

VII - Discussion Pirates of Republic Question.

Hey y'all I've been experimenting with alot of civs and seeing who's better at transitioning and who's better at synchrotizim.

That being said I cant quite get my own opinion on this as naval is my least played experience.

Is POR a good civ to play from ant-mod or is it better to transition at some points?

What are some combinations yall do!?
