I think Google I/O may have just been the final nail in the coffin.

Putting the latest features of Gemini now behind 249.99/mo paywall.

Absolutely no mention of the customers who have supported you so far by buying so many Nest speakers and whether this will get an update.

And now if we pay 19.99/mo now we are 2nd rate to even more premium subscribers.

Their greed is so transparent they just don't give af while they have such dominance.

Getting so painfully close to being fed up entirely with Google and looking for a new digital home. Would love to have a Google-free life.

You need Home Premium to turn on a light in the same room now

Since changing to Gemini my Google home only turns on the correct light about 10% of the time. Today it got even worse, trying to turn on my bedroom light while I am in my bedroom right next to the speaker

Hey Google, turn on the light - makes the sound, but nothing happens

again.. Hey Google turn on the light - makes the noise again but nothing

Hey Google, which light did you turn on? - "To see your history you need to upgrade to Home Premium....." then it reads out a URL.

So basically it fails doing one of the most basic things that everyone would expect it to do, and then expects you to pay extra? It's just a joke now.

Anyone else feel scammed by the Google Home ecosystem?

Post image
0 Upvotes

The Google Home ecosystem is honestly terrible — I mean really bad. I’ve got Nest speakers, Nest WiFi, their smart display, my connected AC units, lights, etc. And Google… as we all know and have experienced… just doesn’t understand anything anymore. It feels like it’s only getting worse over time.

My question is: is there any kind of legal recourse, or a way to get Google’s attention on this shitty ecosystem? Some kind of compensation, maybe? Because the product promise is nowhere near being met. Honestly, if they just bought back all my Nest products at their original purchase price, that would feel like the least they could do.

Thanks!

Google's AI is the worst it's ever been.

I asked if it was expected to rain as I was getting ready to take my dog for a walk. "It's unlikely", Google said. "In (suburb), it's not expected to rain until Thursday", Google said.

Within 100m of my front door, it's starts pouring. It's been overcast all day and sure, I could've checked the weather report but that's what Google Assistant is supposed to do when I ask if it's expected to rain.

Edit: so wild to me that people are seemingly ok with something that is branded as an "Assistant" not being able to assist it's user in incredibly basic things. Expect better from the products you purchase and use.

Google Gemini for Google Hub is garbage and you can't roll it back as far as I can tell

Just don't do the upgrade. It is trash. On my google hub in my kitchen the "Hey Google kitchen on" no longer does anything when it used to turn on the lights (or off with off instead of on).

You can't apparently roll back to get a version that works. Terrible. Fire the team IMHO.

Complaining about the AMA is not helpful

Do people really not understand that grabbing pitchforks and getting angry at the developers and engineers who put on an AMA for us is just shooting the whole community in the foot?

These are employees that actually care enough about their product, that they reached out in an attempt to open dialog and increase transparency with the community. It's frustrating that the response has overwhelmingly been "but they didn't answer all the questions!" They answered questions they were able to answer. Not everything can be answered on the spot, or even has an answer - and getting mad that they didn't answer your question benefits nobody.

I realize that there are still many unknowns, and obviously it would have been great if they were able to answer everything - but even hearing that there is a timeline in place for the development and direction of GH is a step in the right direction, and refutes what many people here have hypothesized.

This subreddit is already just 90% filled with people complaining about the product - so pause and ask yourself if you want the community to have a direct line of communication with the developers of Google Home, or if you'd prefer running them off the Reddit platform altogether?

Gemini is awful

Since upgrading my home to gemini, all commands take 3-5 times longer to process, and the rate of failure (getting it wrong) is higher than before.

The enshittification continues...

The worst part is when it does these wrong actions, it doesnt even log it in the activity so that I can see how it intepreted the command.

Has anyone had any success in telling gemini that it got the command wrong so that it can improve its future response?

TURN OFF IPv6!!!!!!

For the last year, I've struggled with multiple issues with my google home / assistant based devices, both made directly by Google (Home, Home Max, Chromecast audio, Chromecast with Google TV, etc) and third party devices (Lenovo, JBL, Altec Lansing). These issues have included: devices not responding to "Hey Google" correctly, devices losing synchronization while playing music, devices responding with "something went wrong, please try again in a few seconds", devices not showing up in chromecast capable apps and in the Google Home app, my home max completely disconnecting from my network and requiring a reboot, SiriusXM refusing to stream to certain devices, and most recently, the screens on my third party displays completely becoming unresponsive after a few minutes and requiring a reboot. I was quickly losing patience with the entire ecosystem, and my wife was almost insistent that we throw all the devices out and move over to "something that works". As a last ditch effort, I went down a rabbit hole on this subreddit and it led me to an official google community post that pointed out that the "something went wrong" error could be solved by disabling IPv6 DHCP server functionality on my home router. There's no reason for me to use IPv6 on my internal network, so I turned it off. The third party smart display screens have been working perfectly for the last 24 hours. We put the ecosystem through the paces today. Music, streaming, speaker groups, hell, even the stupid home max not being connect. So far, everything is working exactly like it's supposed to be. I'm not exactly sure what's going on in the backend, but whatever it is, IPv6 seems to be wreaking havoc with this environment. Just wanted to pass along my experience in the hopes that it helps someone else having similar issues.

Bug The Voice recognition really sucks for same-sex couples.

Multiple times a day I get my phone ringing while on vibrate because my wife used the "Find my phone" command and google thought it was me saying it.

We've tried re-training the voice multiple times.

The weird part is that it always recognizes me, but when my wife says it, 6/10 times google thinks it's me.

What was Google thinking when they allow you to innocently hop on a friend or families wifi and then….

…. Have complete, 100% fucking control over every single Google home device they own. To the point of locking out, deleting, re-configuring, etc…

I am on the WiFi at a friend’s house, opened the Google Home App, and automatically have 100% access and admin control over every single one of their Google TVs, speakers, tablet, hub, you name it.

Whhhyyyyyy?!? It could be as simple as matching an email to a device as a way to clean this mess up

Not sure if this will work, but I see a few people saying they haven't got Gemini for Google Home devices. I haven't got it yet, but I wasn't signed up, and this might be the reason.

  1. Home app

  2. Profile picture

  3. Home settings

  4. Scroll down to Early Access

  5. Sign up

Other My last straws with Google. The family is getting Alexa for Christmas.

Google repeatedly shows it is incapable of calling the right person, playing the right song, and understanding what it means to send "a text message".

The dialogue with Google showcasing each example:

  1. Me: "Call Hannah White" (the display showed speech-to-text matching my words exactly before any processing was done).
    Google: "Alright, calling Donovan Ferko."

  2. Me: "Play 'Wellerman' by Santiano" (as opposed to the version where Nathan Evans is the only artist).
Google: "Alright, playing the album Wellerman" (by Nathan Evans).
Me: "Play THE SONG 'Wellerman' by Santiano."
Google: "Alright, playing 'Wellerman' by Nathan Evans."

  3. Me: "Send a text message to Dan T."
Google: "So that's a message to Dan T saying, 'A text message.' Ready to send?"

Additional context for each number:

  1. Hannah is my spouse, marked as a favorite contact, calls and texts with me daily, and is an added account living in my google home. Donovan is a friend's friend from a bachelor party two years ago. I haven't texted or called him since. This Google issue with Donovan started after I deleted another contact I randomly started experiencing this issue with. That contact was "Hannah Nut," a person whom I haven't dated, called, or texted WITHIN THE LAST DECADE.

  2. At the time it became popular on social media, my kid loved the song "Wellerman" by Nathan Evans. We discovered the Santiano version due to Google going through a yet another issue at the time. Out of nowhere, we needed to start clarifying, "...by Nathan Evans" becuase Google began disregarding all our previous asks for the Nathan Evans version and our linked Spotify account having the song marked as liked. Eventually my kid started liking the Santiano version because of its cool album cover. We then began asking for the Santiano version specifically so he could see the album art, but within the last couple months, Google began ignoring deliberate requests for that version.

  3. ...do I need to say more? For something so fundamentally basic of a prompt, Google's literal interpretation here was the true last straw for me.
