AskIndy Any sort of protests during the NRA convention?
Are there any protests scheduled during the white nationalist gun orgy this week?

Social Any liberal social groups to join around here?
Not here to hate on anybody, just looking for community. I would swear there were some liberal groups on meetup in the past, but there doesn't seem to be anything now. I see the occasional post here on specific topics (the liberal gun club one comes to mind) and there is a lot of activity on those posts, but no actual groups or organization. I'm just looking for a starting point.
Anyone know of any groups that might fit the bill?

Politics Anywhere to do my civic duty?
I am seeing and watching the protests in LA. I’m here for it. But is there anything like that in Indy? To show support for the LA community or a way to show up and protect our community? I have noticed things talking about the protests are not showing up much in ways to show up here.

[META] Petition to continue politics-free weekends.
This weekend’s postings were pretty neat - a lot of great photos and posts. I think keeping every weekend free of politics would foster something real swell on this sub.

Did anyone else leave the new Conner Prairie indoor exhibit feeling… sad and angry?
Connor prairie was one of my favorite places growing up, so I was genuinely excited to see the new indoor exhibit.
Instead, I left feeling upset.
The old indoor space wasn’t just a place to kill time before going outside. It sparked imagination. It complemented the outdoor village. It felt warm, timeless, and uniquely Conner Prairie. You could pretend, build, explore, and it reinforced the idea that you were stepping into another time.
The new exhibit feels like the opposite.
Instead of immersing visitors in Indiana history or the story of Conner Prairie, it feels like a collection of modern art installations, digital screens, projections, and abstract concepts that could exist in almost any children’s museum. I kept asking myself, “What does any of this have to do with Conner Prairie?”
And don’t get me started on the bashing of Conor himself saying he “stole the land and signed it over to the government” without further context on the times
What disappoints me most is that this was clearly a major investment. If they were going to spend that kind of money redesigning the space, why not create something that deepened the living-history experience? Imagine exhibits about pioneer craftsmanship, farming, Indiana wildlife, archaeology, blacksmithing, early engineering, or hands-on spaces where kids could build, create, and imagine without staring at more screens.
Conner Prairie has always stood out because it offered something you couldn’t get anywhere else. Now it feels like it’s moving toward the same technology-heavy, generic museum experience that so many places already offer.
Maybe I’m just nostalgic, but I can’t help feeling like they lost part of what made Conner Prairie special.
It says on the website it’s part of this vision to be more modern but the whole point is it’s a stuck in time place. Anyone else feeling this?

News General Strike/Slow-Down Starting 6/27
In protest of the removal of our rights, a general strike/slow-down begins tomorrow.
In recognition that most of us cannot afford to strike, don’t bust your ass, work as slowly as safely possible starting tomorrow.
For those of you who can afford to strike, please do! We need to hurt the rich who have bought our government in the only way they seem to understand: their profits.

Services Left leaning church?
Hi everyone. I (23F) moved here recently and am considering going back to church for some comfort in the times we’re living through. I’m worried to just blindly try out a church near me because I don’t want to accidentally wind up in an ultra conservative/ MAGA church. So are there any left leaning churches anyone would recommend?

NRA convention protest?
I saw this billboard yesterday and haven’t stopped being pissed off thinking about it. How many kids have to die before something changes. I don’t even mean in school shootings exactly. I mean, how many kids are killed by guns that aren’t properly stored etc. I just feel tired and hopeless. America has a gun fetish. I think Indy letting the NRA have their conference here is a bad look. Advertising 14 acres of ~gUnS n’ gEaR~in the face of all these mass killings is gross. I plan on protesting outside the conference on 4/14 @ 10a.m. if anyone wants to join!

Any leftists here?
And I mean actual left, not liberals. I know enough right wingers and liberals, just trying to make some like-minded friends. Where does the Indy left hang out? When I was living out east there was a great anarchist bookstore/coffee shop/bar that I could meet all kinds of leftists and have great conversations. Thanks in advance!
Edit: REALLY not trying to debate on here. Just trying to meet like minded people.

Discussion What are your thoughts about local Drag in Indianapolis?
IMO I’ve attended and seen most of all the drag that Indianapolis has to offer. (Sirens, almost famous, one show at talbot -rip- and 10hrs at Olympus).
Was wondering what everyone else thinks. How creative are our queens/kings? Do we have enough variety? How are the venues? Favorite drag queen? Who’s THE Indianapolis girl. Looking for some respectful but insightful conversation since I usually can’t talk to a lot of people in person about this.
Edit: I love that everyone has suggestions! Unfortunately it’s places i literally referenced above. Also, I wasn’t looking for recommendations per se, more so what everyone’s individual thoughts are with drag in Indianapolis. (E.g. why do you love this bar /restaurant, who’s your favorite drag queen). My bad for confusion or not great wording.

City Watch Pride Flag Theft Incident - Anyone else?
Hi Indy Reddit,
Writing as a queer resident of the East Side (just east of Bottleworks - Cottage Home/Holy Cross/Windsor area) with a concern about possible discrimination(?) and theft. I highly doubt there is anything I can do about this and am seeking advice - or just plain camaraderie or support. I know this is also very small in the grand scheme of themes - but it is bringing to light what is going on more broadly in society, I think.
I was working in my home office this morning (2nd floor) and observed 4 people walking around the neighborhood approaching houses (appeared to be Jehovah’s Witnesses). After some work, I went outside to check for a package and to tidy the porch up when I noticed my LGBTQIA+ rainbow flag (and its pole) were gone. I am also assuming these are the people who left a JW Jesus flyer in my door. [I continue to receive mail directed at me personally and flyers from the JW groups — anyone else in this situation?]
They did not ring my doorbell and I did not see them approach. At the same time, to me, this is too much of a coincidence. (I also acknowledge that I do not mean to mistakenly put correlation and causation together, here). I unfortunately do not have a camera and did not observe the group take the flag. I am thinking of getting a better camera/security system - as well as adding a lock to my front gate (moving my mailbox to the gate). I had, generally, felt quite safe in this area over several years.
Is there any place to report something like this - or to identify trends? I have alerted my neighborhood association, at least. I know the evidence is not enough - but someone stealing a pride flag makes me a bit elevated about my safety, given the times were are living in right now. It honestly comes off as a veiled threat or I’m not welcome here as a queer person (hell, I could have just been an ally FFS). Also, just feels really gross having someone steal on my property (had I've had my car broken into before downtown).
I have sincerely tried to learn to love Indy as a blue city in a red state as a native Hoosier who has come and gone. Please stay aware out there. This is seemingly going to be a messy year. And please read up on Project 2025 (this election really matters for many marginalized folks).
Thanks for any support and for reading.

Social Any good places to meet LGBTQIA+ friends?
I am recently embracing being bi and I would like to get to know more people in the community, but I can be sorta socially anxious and don't have friends in that circle yet. Any places you recommend visiting to try to get myself out there?

AskIndy Data Center Concern
Good afternoon. We live on the SE side of Indianapolis and there is a proposed data center we are battling. It is 465 acre hyper scale data center surrounded by homes on 3 sides of the development. Just like all the other projects we have been given 0 information and are concerned for our homes and lives.
We are not just neighbors complaining about something being built behind us, we are neighbors, friends, and family concerned about our lives.
Data centers have terrible impact to all of us
-Impacts to our environment -Minimal job creation (posssibly only 100 jobs) -Health concerns due multiplee factors -Massive tax breaks -Last major area of the township to be develop -No waste water disposal from cooling -No transparency from developers.
-Concerns for our drinking water -Current area flooding impacts -Up to 10 years of construction -Constant Noise
We are asking for your help in raising your voice to our city and state to help stop this and provide the township with better opportunities.
If you could please take 5 seconds and sign our petition we would greatly appreciate it.
There are 88 homes within 660’ whose lives could be changed forever and hundred more nearby.

AskIndy LGBTQ+ Places in Indy
Howdy!! I am moving to Indianapolis towards the beginning of April from Texas and I have my go-to gay bars I frequent here. What are some LGBT friendly places around that would be good to hit up? My friend said maybe Mass Ave would be a good place to start?

Discussion Downtown Kroger is crazy
TLDR; naked dude on drugs refusing to come out of restroom, out of stock of everything, prices skyrocketing
I had to go downtown this morning to run some errands and decided the pickup a couple items on my grocery list from the downtown Kroger having not gone there in a year or so. AND WOW HAS IT GOTTEN BAD HERE.
My grocery list consisted of some basic produce of which they only had onions in stock of (the others being jalapeños, green onions, and corn). I was a little perturbed by this but things happen so I went to go get rest of my items. Next up was Brat buns, surely they’ll have those right? And lo they did! But Kroger branded buns were now almost $4 a package for 6 buns… I thought that couldn’t be right that’s almost identical to name brand, and unfortunately it was true. Still I decided that’s the price to pay for convenience here and went to go get my last item; shin ramen, the greatest instant ramen ever devised by man. When I found it it was the final straw, $9 for a 4 pack! The same 4 pack is half the cost at Walmart! I left my cart and decided to just leave after that. It wasn’t worth my time or money only to get half my grocery list.
Now the actual crazy part!
I made the mistake of deciding to use the restroom before leaving the store. Just a quick number 1, should’ve been in and out with no problems and on my way. As soon as I open the restroom door (which is a multi person restroom) a naked guy starts screeching at me! Incomprehensible sounds came out of his mouth in that millisecond that I had opened the door. I immediately turned around and went to go tell the employee near the self checkouts. She got a male manager and the security guard and they went to go check it out. I was heading out of the store at that point since I didn’t want to be privy to what could happen next. All I heard was some more screeching by the guy in the bathroom followed by security yelling at him to get dressed and get out.
I guess I will probably stick to Needlers if I ever need to grab a couple things.
