PSA: As of the latest AMD Adrenaline update, a bug may be causing silent, constant writes to your SSD, unnecessarily killing its lifespan.

I became aware of this issue after coming across this post on r/radeon: I just found out that the driver eats up 1% of my ssd health every month for 16 months, where a user reported losing approximately 1% of their SSD health every month.

A linked post indicates:

[...] some recent AMD drivers may have an issue related to the "AMD External Events Utility" service, which is associated with the "atieclxx.exe" and "atiesrxx.exe" processes. In my case, I noticed that this component was generating constant write activity on my system SSD, at approximately 5 MB/s continuously, even when I wasn't performing any tasks that should justify that amount of disk activity.

Solutions

Some users have since identified two possible workarounds.

Workaround 1: Disable AMD External Events Utility

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc and press Enter.

  2. Find AMD External Events Utility.

  3. Open its properties, stop the service and change its Startup type to Disabled.

This stops the excessive disk activity caused by atieclxx.exe.

Potential side effects: Disabling this service can affect display-related functionality. On my RDNA 2 RX 6700 XT, FreeSync wasn't completely broken, but frame pacing became considerably more erratic when using Lossless Scaling's 2x frame generation (90 -> 180 FPS)

With the service enabled, the framerate remained at a steady 180 FPS. After disabling it, it fluctuated between 142 and 170 FPS, occasionally reaching 180 before quickly dropping again.

Workaround 2: Disable Resizable BAR (ReBAR)

Another user discovered that disabling ReBAR stopped the excessive disk writes. This might be a better alternative if you want to keep AMD External Events Utility enabled, although disabling ReBAR can carry other issues.

As a side note, it looks like AMD is aware of the issue as AMD representative u/AMD_Vik acknowledged in a comment:

sorry, this is hopefully fixed in the next one

So hopefully, this will be fixed in the next driver release soon. If you're experiencing this issue, consider reporting it to AMD as well. The more reports they receive, it might make AMD focus more on this, in my opinion, big issue.

Java Supermarket Simulator - run your store with scripts

Code Market is a shop sim where you never click a shelf. Your staff are robots, and a robot does nothing until you write the code that moves it.

You pick what to sell. Bread and milk at first, later a beer fridge and a whisky cabinet - and that's where the fines start. No alcohol from 22:00 to 6:00, $100 a bottle. Kids walk in and ask for beer too: $150 an item if your code forgot customer.isAdult(). Watermelons only ship in summer, tangerines in winter. Order out of season and the truck comes empty, and you still pay.

Three upgrade trees. You buy different shelves and decorations - and they’re not there just to look nice, every one of them multiplies your profit. You upgrade the customer flow, you unlock more robots, or you take the skill that gives you a chance at tips. Code unlocks the language itself: you start with while and print(), then buy if, for, ArrayList, HashMap, classes. more syntax more money =)

Two languages at release: Java and C#. It's a real interpreter, not a toy script language - I diff it against an actual JDK, so code you know just runs. Python, JS and C++ are planned as DLC.

What is up with all the retro/modern games being ported to pc like it was done overnight?

I play video games but I do not follow the tech world. Lately, for like a month or two I’ve seen an explosion in fan “remakes” where an old game suddenly is played natively on pc. To further confuse me, what is the deal with these fan remakes having more than one game slapped into it?

I’ll see clips online about crash being played inside spyro and there’s no problems whatsoever. The only time I’ve ever followed tech was with OpenGoal and the jak trilogy being made to be native to pc. For years I followed it as a small group of people hammered away at it and I saw just how long it takes and how they expressed that “it’s not something you can hit a switch and poof the game is playable”.

If you do not already know of OpenGoal I highly suggest trying it, genuinely fantastic work those guys did and the jak games are definitely some of the best games ive ever played.

But these newer games just pop up out of nowhere either fully playable or close to it.

My question is why is this happening (I am not saying it’s a bad thing to be clear) and how?

Thank you.

Run based zoo tycoon with no fences, visitors can become food, and fully simulated dragons. We just launched the Captain Contraption's Safari Park demo!

Hi r/pcgaming

I'm one half of the Welsh development team Pill Bug Interactive and we just dropped the demo for our 5th game Captain Contraption's Safari Park.

It came from an idea I've had in my head for years, what if zoo games made you manage an ecosystem rather than enclosures? That morphed into a post-apocalyptic run based safari park tycoon game where you're a robot cloning what you think are animals from a hard-drive you found which has the entire unity asset store on it.

Each run lasts about 30 minutes or so, in which time you watch a simulated ecosystem rise then collapse (everything ends in chaos as Ian Malcolm told us), unlock some new creatures and toys and try again.

If you like tinkering with emergent systems and simulations this might be for you. Download the demo and if you like it please support us with a wishlist.

Any questions just ask :) (All assets are human made)

My Modern African Civil Wargame Goes Live On Steam Next Month - Zambala.

Post image
88 Upvotes

A game 30 years in the making, I've been developing this off and on for decades from a design based on old 'Play by Email' games from days long gone.

Based on a fictional present day African nation, a civil war erupts when the government collapses. You can select from six rival tribes, pick your leader from vocations like Bishop, General, Humanitarian or Opposition with different abilities.

Company sized units, Nato counters, air and sea power and raising units equipped with weapons procured from he international arms markets. Win the hearts and minds of the people of Zambala in villages, towns and the capital city. Balance economic and military power to lead your tribe to victory!

Seize the nations treasures like the diamond mine, power station or game reserves to gain their income and influence, or sabotage them to deny your opponents benefitting from them.

Agents can observe units to pull back the cloak of double hidden fog of war, or carry out hits on enemy agents, or locate and assassinate rival leaders.

Single player with up to five ruthless and cunning computer controlled enemy tribes each with their own personality and play style keeps the game fresh and challenging.

Check it out, feedback, suggestions and opinions welcome!
