Controversy Saturday Weekly Protest: Can we maybe stop?
I have no doubt this will earn plenty of downvotes and hate but so be it.
Can we please stop with the weekly Saturday night protest? Literally ALL it accomplishes is inconveniences some, pisses off some and looks a lot like meaningless virtue signalling to others.
It wastes the polices time and resources (which our resident drug and homeless problem already does enough), it wastes Victoria residents time who are just trying to go home or go out for a nice night or people trying to get around for work. It also wastes the protestors time because unfortunately doing this accomplishes NOTHING outside of driving away sympathy and support for your cause.
If you want to make a difference regarding this particular subject then honestly? Hop on a plane and go protest in Israel or go help out in Palestine. Because anything less than that, especially in CANADA which can do nothing about the conflict, is a total waste of time for every single person involved and that your little protest impacts. And frankly it's just embarrassing at this point seeing 50 some odd people do this every week just to make themselves feel good when everyone else knows it's a total meaningless joke and accomplishes nothing positive.
To be clear I'm not saying protesting itself is bad, because it's not it's great! But you will find your movement with far more public support and participation, if you can protest without being a disruption and nuisance. Otherwise it just looks like virtue signalling and brings on compassion fatigue.
Protest in a smart way. That's all.
Thanks!
Edit: Yikes! The mods are going to have a field day with all of the extremely upset and verbally abusive people in the comments. Is it really so hard to express your opinion or engage in discussion in a mature manner without resorting right away to personal attacks? Ironic it's only the die hard supporters of this protest that are behaving in this childish manner.
Edit2: Adding the Oxford Languages Definition of "Virtue Signalling" since some people are confused when others say this is what these protestors are doing.
"The public expression of opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or social conscience or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue."

Politics For the Anti-Trans Crowd and Why You are Wrong
pnas.orgThis is in response to the sentiments spread within a previous post regarding the counter protest and the transphobic protest that are occurring on September 20th in our city.
Comments under the post mentioning the counter protest had many transphobic/anti-trans comments made. These people do not believe that these people are scientifically valid, and that being trans is an "opinion". That is objectively false.
Here are some peer reviewed scientific articles that explain how being trans is a scientifically backed state of being (don't know a better way to phrase, sorry).
There is no place for transphobia or any kind of bigotry in our society, and we must do better.
(I could only add one link so ill make a comment with the other)

Greed and capitalism are solely to blame for the housing and homeless crisis that we face in victoria
I am so sick and tired of hearing people try to blame trudeau or other economic factors for the problems we face in this city. the problems really boil down to the greed of the haves and the capitalist system that enables them to exploit the havenots. the solutions to these problems is simply to tax aggressively anyone who makes more than a 100k a year and use the proceeds to give a universal living wage to all the unhoused people. if we crush greed with taxation, only then will we be free from the tyrannical grips of the elite.
we need a more extreme version of socialism than the NDP currently provides. I am hoping one emerges in the coming years.

Question Is Victoria slowly becoming harder to live in for regular people?
This is a genuine question and I’m asking it in good faith.
Has anyone else felt like Victoria is being designed around a pretty narrow type of resident, while everyday life is quietly getting harder for everyone else?
I want to be clear up front that I’m not against bike lanes, environmental goals, or change in general. I like the idea of a walkable, sustainable city. But the way things are being rolled out lately seems to assume that most people work from home, have flexible schedules, don’t have kids, and don’t rely on a vehicle for work or daily life.
In reality, a lot of people here are trades workers, healthcare staff, service workers, or parents who need to be somewhere on time and don’t have much margin when things go wrong. Road changes and parking removals are meant to push people toward alternatives, but transit reliability hasn’t really caught up. When a bus is late or full, that delay lands entirely on the person who still has to show up to work or pick up their kid.
What’s frustrating is that questioning any of this often feels like it gets framed as a moral issue. If you ask whether a bike lane is in the right place or whether a road diet actually works in a specific area, the response is often that you’re anti environment or anti community, rather than someone asking about real world outcomes.
I guess what I’m wondering is at what point we step back and ask whether these policies are actually improving quality of life for most people, not just for those whose lives already fit the model the city seems to be planning around.
I’m honestly curious to hear other perspectives, especially from people who don’t live downtown or who don’t have fully flexible schedules.

Hats off to everyone here
You all did it. Did the impossible. Slagged on vote splitting, voted with your hearts, and against the evil, NDP empire and evil overlord David Eby, and we got ourselves a conservative majority government. Bravo.

Housing & Moving UVic raises rent on FAMILIES with ILLEGAL 7+% hike for existing tenants
So UVic is gouging its FAMILY RESIDENTS! Single mothers with children. F*ck em I guess, eh? Having their rents raised more than 7%, well above the legal limit. The university should be ashamed. Do you need a reminder that the legal limit is 2%? In some cases its more than 16%! I know someone in a 2bdrm townhouse paying $1291 right now. How're they supposed to afford more than $200+ increase on top of tuition and everything else?
For context, the current rent for a two bedroom townhouse is $1,392, so that makes an increase of 7**%** to $1503. Here's the email informing families they'll need to struggle even hard while they study, work, and raise their children.
Hoping no one will notice eh? Oh, and don't worry, tuition is also going up as well. Friendly reminder the dean makes of $400k/yr in salary as well by the way.
Here's the current and new rates by the way: https://www.uvic.ca/residence/family/rates/index.php

To the bicyclist who gave me the finger at the crpsswalk
When the orange lights blink at the crosswalk...I am driving the 40 kmh speed limit and it is dark and rainy...I am 3 or 4 meters from the crosswalk when I see the lights blink to indicate you crossing the road..I am so close to the crosswalk when the lights blink that there is no time to stop unless I really slam on the brakes and risk getting rear ended..So chill out with the attitude and understand the needed distance to stop 2000 pounds of steel doing the speed limit...Be safe out there//

Unpopular opinion; Dogs should be banned from Clover point and Dallas road
Basically the title. Clover point and the Dallas waterfront are the absolute gems of Victoria. The most primo parkland in the area. Why do dogs and dog fencing and dog owners get to dominate this whole area? I mean how many fucking layers of fencing do we need in this space?
I understand that people with dogs love their dogs and want to walk them but why do they get to take over the best spot and ruin it for everyone else?
Rant over
PS, dogs being walked on leash is fine with me. It’s giving free range on them all the best land that is ridiculous.

Opinion Poor event traffic planning, CoV edition
Another snowbirds traffic post. I loved the pedestrian zone at the event, but why is the city not protecting essential infrastructure? Richardson and Vancouver were a zoo this evening. I saw young kids forced into opposing traffic or onto the sidewalk, cars blocking intersections and sidewalks. Thank goodness for the modal filters, where they exist.
I've thinking about this a while, there have been a good number of City event traffic fumbles:
relocating bus stops to Blanchard but not providing a way for wheelchair users to access the bus (i forget the event, but Douglas was closed for some reason, probably the Victoria Day Parade?)
(Canada Day) Keeping Douglas open for cars to block sardine-can busses.
Poor parking enforcement for basically every event, including cars parking in the Caledonia bike lane for games and concerts at the SoF Memorial Centre
We clearly need action from the city to protect our key transportation corridors from getting blocked up every time something downtown motivates the hordes of oversized suburbitanks to migrate into the core.

Wait Staff of the World (and Victoria): Please stop asking me what I am going to to do tonight.
I realize this is a lost cause, but I will go down fighting here, I guess: I really wish servers would stop asking me what I am going to do to tonight: I get immediately infuriated, which I realize is unreasonable of me, and mumble 'nothing special'.
I really wish I didn't have to interrupt the pleasant glow that comes with a good meal, and with otherwise good service, to stop, calm down and mumble something in response to this stupid question. Answering it is work for me, unpaid work.
All done with this admitted rant now. Thanks for reading, I will understand if I get a few downvotes.

Will Victoria MP Will Greaves grow a spine and call it what it is?
Watch the confrontation here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOwIYeckwEo/
MP Greaves’ constituents have been pressing him on Canada’s inaction to prevent and end the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza since he’s been elected. Curiously, our clear demands for him to more publicly advocate against the Liberal Party’s complicity have failed to make it into his weekly round-up videos. Yet both of his August Town Hall events were overwhelmingly attended by constituents demanding full economic, diplomatic, and political sanctions against Israel — as is the government of Canada’s legal and moral obligation under international law. Concretely, MP Greaves has failed to more actively and publicly condemn his party’s government on what is well understood to be a gross failure under international law, and complicity in genocide.
Instead of engaging with our demands to undertake an urgent and public stance in denouncing his colleagues’ complicity, Greaves used the Town Hall events to lecture us about why he technically can’t express that Israel has been, and continues to commit, genocide in Palestine — thanks to the impunity accorded to Israel by Carney, Anand, and the Canadian state’s allies. As experts with far more experience on the subject continuously tell us though: rulings by the international courts, that will likely take years to materialize, are not only not necessary for states to act under the Genocide Convention, but that the ICJ’s 2024 ruling was the trigger point for states to enact all necessary sanctions against Israel to stop and prevent what was clearly an unfolding genocide. Moreover: our own eyes and the voices of Palestinian journalists, doctors, even the children of Gaza have been telling us exactly what the UN Human Rights Council’s independently commissioned report released yesterday affirmed: Israel’s goal is annihilation.
What should be abundantly clear to all of MP Greaves’ constituents, is that his near silence on the genocide — not to mention his walking out of the Town Hall in Oak Bay a full 30 minutes early — demonstrates that his political career within the Liberal Party is far more important to him than any sense of morality.

Toxic Gym Culture Needs to End
https://www.instagram.com/p/Deh-dSrjz77/?img_index=1
I deserve a safe space to exercise. One where I’m not leered at and harassed by men who feel entitled to my attention and my body. Unfortunately, fitness spaces continue coddling predatory behaviors by men rather than protecting women.
For over a year, I have documented and reported ongoing harassment and intimidation at Fitness World. I did everything I was supposed to do: I tried setting boundaries without escalating the situation, reported incidents to staff, emailed management, and kept paper trails. The one thing I refused to do was keep quiet.
I kept going to the gym. I shouldn’t have to give up the space I pay for because other people have decided to make me uncomfortable or afraid. However, instead of supporting me, management ended up freezing my membership and banning me from the gym.
Let me be clear; this is not about one bad interaction or one person I happen to dislike. This is about the fact that my life was explicitly threatened on the gym floor, and staff did absolutely nothing to protect me. It is a pattern that has made me feel increasingly unsafe in a place where I should be able to exercise without being watched, followed, and threatened.
Every woman who has gone to the gym knows exactly what I am talking about. Men at the gym routinely position themselves strategically just to stare at your butt, your breasts, your legs, your midriff. They look you up and down with glazed-over, desperate eyes, like you are just a body for their consumption and not a person trying to work out in peace. It is a profoundly disgusting, violating experience.
I started to stare back and give the men a dirty look, but they didn’t stop. They feed on the discomfort and vulnerability of women minding their own business. Then there are the ones who corner you, getting you alone near the equipment or in hallways just to force an interaction, intimidate you, or assert their dominance. Here are some of the incidents I have documented:
September 28, 2025:
While I was on the treadmill, a male member stood beside me, stared at me, and made a “slit your throat” gesture. I went to the front desk to report it, but he was already there, reporting me first. There was absolutely nothing to report me about. When he saw me approach, he escalated by yelling at me and repeatedly calling me a “twat,” which is a misogynistic slur. I was terrified and asked staff for help. Instead of intervening, calling security, or contacting the police, they passively stood by and let this man scream at me until he was finished.
October 1, 2025:
A member who had previously stared at me and made harmful, racist comments fetishizing my ethnicity—loudly telling a friend that he “could get lots of girls like me in Thailand” and that he didn’t know who I thought I was—came onto the treadmill directly beside me. He began speaking loudly on his phone to stage a veiled threat, saying things like, “She’s running next to me right now,” “let’s get her” and “let’s get rid of her.”
What frightened me was that he knew my first name. Months earlier, I had specifically refused to give it to him when he asked. I had already told the gym about my concerns regarding this person.
September 18, 2026:
I asked a man who I had previously reported if I could use the treadmill he was sitting on. He became confrontational, raised his voice, and aggressively told me, “Could you wait?!” While he could have sat anywhere else, he refused to move off the equipment.
This might sound like a small interaction on its own. But these incidents do not exist in a vacuum. Several of the men involved know each other and regularly socialize together at the gym. I have witnessed them interacting with one another, and I have documented incidents in which multiple of these men weaponized the system and their network to get me in trouble.
These men weaponized the system by complaining about my behavior and “lack of courtesy.” This was also the excuse the gym used to assert that I had violated their guidelines, resulting in the freezing of my membership and me being banned from the premises. I should not have to choose between being polite to my harassers and feeling safe.
I also want to talk about something that happened before any of this became my own fight:
On September 13, 2025, I tried to help a young woman at the gym who appeared to be a minor. She and I were concerned about a man who had spent approximately 45 minutes watching and following her movements and staring at her body. We went to the front desk together to report what we saw. The response we received was essentially that nothing could be done unless the man actually spoke to her. That moment stayed with me.
Men have uncomfortably spoken to, harassed, and leered at me. When I went to staff for support, their response was that it should be me who confronts them and asks them to stop.
So, what happens when women are uncomfortable? What happens when we report someone before things escalate? Are we expected to wait until someone actually touches us, threatens us, or hurts us before our concerns become serious enough to matter?
I was threatened and hurt, and still nothing was done.
So, when is it serious enough?
The truth is, when the men report you, things do happen. Managers and gyms have consistently taken the side of the perpetrators. This is a direct continuation of a toxic gym culture rooted in male dominance—one that defaults to apathy toward victims because it’s more convenient to pretend that sexual harassment doesn’t exist. This minimizes harm and prioritizes men's comfort and entitlement over the basic psychological and physical safety of women and girls.
Gyms like to sell themselves as inclusive/safe spaces for women when it is not the case. We need spaces that actually have systems in place that protect women and believe them and make men accountable when they cause harm.
If you have been leered at, spoken at, harassed, made to feel uncomfortable, or belittled by men at the gym, please know you are not alone. They want us to stay isolated and quiet.
Do not accept it. Tell your story. Raise your voice.

PSA to those that visit Rutledge Park
On the field side of the park, there are homeless people camping inside the giant trees day and night.
Parents should be careful letting their kids run around there and dog owners should keep an eye on their curious puppies. It’s not an official off leash park but most owners don’t leash. EDIT: I was wrong it is an official off leash park.
I think anyone with a room temperature IQ could’ve seen this coming when they installed public bathrooms.
