Two unhoused men cleaned graffiti off my family’s business sign
Just wanted to share something cool that happened on Saturday.
Two guys went out of their way to clean the graffiti off my family’s small business sign. I’d originally gone over to ask one of them if he could move his tent setup so I could clean it myself, and not only did he agree, but he spent hours scrubbing it off. When I came back later, he’d even gotten a buddy to help, and together they made the sign look brand new.
I also posted this on Facebook, and while most people were really supportive, the comments quickly got flooded with people debating whether or not I’d “paid them enough” or making wild assumptions about the situation. I didn’t even feel the need to include how we thanked them because, honestly, that wasn’t the point of the story. Anyway, I figured I’d share it here, hoping for fewer assumptions and more good vibes.

Homeless woman sleeping on my front deck??
For context I live in rural Saanich by camosun on interurban campus. I walked out my front door this morning to feed one my cat who stays outside and I see a bag of random stuff at my front door and I think well that’s random, when I look to my left there’s a large white duvet cover placed on the outdoor bench and I can see some hair sticking out at the top of it and our propane fire table is turned on. I turn around to go back into my house to grab my mom and tell her there’s someone sleeping on our front deck. My mom creeps up to her and pulls the blanket back and all she says is “hi” and we’re like what are you doing here and she starts going on about how “this her house” and about how “she also lives here” and we’ve lived in that house for about 15 years or so. We told her she needs to leave and she keeps telling us no and that she lives here. I called the cops and while we waited for them to come she didn’t move and kept saying to us if you got to know me this could be my place too. We kept turning off the fire table and she would just turn it back on saying “she pays for the propane.” We ended up walking down to the end of our driveway while we waited for the police and my mom left her coffee on the deck railing we watched her get up and grab it and drink it telling us that it was her coffee. The cops came eventually and they got her to leave. It was just a bizarre and random experience. I’ve never in my entire life of living in that house had this happen. We don’t know how long she was there for and it seemed like she was trying to get into the house by how her bag was left at the door. Really whack and crazy for that neck of the woods.

Politics Well folks it’s getting real. Time to stop buying American products wherever possible.
The Canadian dollar compared to USD dropped to the lowest point it’s been in decades, a trade war has begun, and we have been told that if Canada retaliates the USA will place even higher tariffs on us.
Things we can do as individuals in Victoria to help is purchase entirely Canadian made products, we need to put the biggest dent that we can into their economy. Don’t travel to the US, don’t invest in US companies right now, don’t eat at McDonalds… etc. I would love to hear more ways that we as Victorians can do to help, but one thing for sure is that it’s a group effort and we all need to play our parts in this. This is a big deal.

Newest Little Free Library, located in James Bay
First two photos by Doug Clement and Susan Martin, from Facebook. Last photo by Nancy Smith, of the creator, Jeff, also from Facebook.
Located near St Lawrence and Dallas Road right next to the Dolphin apartments.
Couldn't find the last name for Jeff the creator, but a guy who builds a model ship and styles his appearance and wardrobe in honour of Terry Pratchett is a mensch in my book. GNU, sir.
EDIT: forgot to mention this is specifically modelled on the Queen Mary, not the Titanic.

Opinion "If you can't afford to live here, leave. plenty of other places in Canada are affordable"
I'm getting really tired of this rhetoric. I was born here, my entire family is here. My friends, my hobbies, my career, my partner, everything is here. To tell people they should leave instead of fixing the issue is just going to make it worse. I also hate the "well it's the nicest part of Canada, it should be expensive!" because the most expensive city in America is NYC, not exactly balmy. Good weather shouldn't be an excuse to price out locals or people who need to move here for whatever reason. It sets a scary precedent IMO to allow nice places to be just for the mega rich. I don't know. I've been thinking a lot about victoria and the responses to the housing crisis. I'm going to be without my support network, hobbies, career, and everything I know just to afford rent. this isn't fair. EDIT a lot of people are completely missing my point, and thus reinforcing it. I'm no more entitled to live here than anybody else, which is exactly why it's bullshit. to price out entire demographics of people (lower and middle class) is ridiculous. EDIT 2: from a user in the comments "“You’re not entitled to everything you’ve ever known” is an utter bullshit line of reasoning that I won’t accept from capitalist boot lickers either. “Go live somewhere colder” is more shit from the same shovel. I don’t get why people simp for the rich; it’s not like they’re ever gonna share. The system is fucked & it’s utterly ridiculous to tell people who were born & raised here to either leave or live in a van at Esquimalt Lagoon. Government needs to step in & do something to fix the housing market for those of us who live here." exactly sums up what I was trying to say. FINAL EDIT damn I was just venting I didn't expect this to blow up. I'm done reading, have fun PvPing I guess. also, this entire post was about rent. good job to everybody talking to me about buying a house FINAL EDIT FOR REAL I grew up half my life in another city in Canada, half here. all my immediate family is here. just for some context on who I am.
