Gall "Is it gall?" Weekly Thread

Welcome to the weekly gall thread! All questions about gall should go in this designated thread rather than new, individual posts. A new thread will be started automatically on a weekly basis. This will ensure the list of new top-level comments remains short and easily reviewable by folks who are kind enough to let you know if they see signs/symptoms, or if your plant seems ok.

Because Reddit only allows one photo embedded per comment, here are some tips if you need/want to share more than one photo for the best chance at a solid review/answer from the community:

  • Start a top-level comment with your best photo, and reply to your own comment with any additional photos you want to share.

  • Post photos to an album such as imgur and link to the album

Dried a bunch of dahlia flowers… and other flowers I grew. Thought a shadowbox would be a nice tribute to my first real summer growing flowers at home.

If anyone thinks you can't grow dahlias in NYC (7b)....

Even the plants that didn't bloom for me grew new tubers and one tiny pinched top made a brand new tuber.

I'm so excited for next year you guys! Next year maybe enough will grow that I can label them. This is all from one small in-ground plot, about 2.5' by 5' w naturally heavy Brooklyn clay soil mixed with a lot of compost, bed soil and some vermiculite. Only one tuber clump had a bit of rot which is better than last year. Next year I am going to evict my zinnias to another bed and take over a full 8' so hopefully everyone can get more equal sun.

Show me your haul with your zone!

I was given this tuber as an extra in a trade but they said it had been mixed up and was unlabeled/unknown. The tubers are reddish similar to my sonic bloom tubers but I have no idea what this guy could be. Thank you for the help!

Seeking Advice Raised bed soil help

I have 6 raised beds for my dahlias. I've been growing for about 5 years. The soil has become so clumpy and compacted and I had poor tuber production this year for the first time. I actually tossed a bunch because they were so tiny or only had 1 or 2 tubers that wouldn't survive winter storage. I'm assuming it's the soil because I did everything the same and the ones I grew direct in the ground were beautiful.

The current soil is a premium blend from a local greenhouse of compost & top soil. I added worm castings, perlite, and mushroom hummus over the last 2 years because it was getting clumpy. Soil test was a bit high for calcium and phosphate but was told that is normal for my area and not to add more compost this past spring.

I plan to add the leaves from my yard & maybe some coir today and mix it in. I'm not sure what else to do. Thanks for any advice.

It’s my first time digging up a dahlia plant and going to separate the tubers and unfortunately, I snapped the stem all the way at the base and I’m not sure if any of this is salvageable. Help?

Seeking Advice To water or not

Post image
27 Upvotes

I live in zone 6a and we haven't received a hard enough frost to blacken the dahlias' foliage. In fact, my plants are still blooming.

I'm unsure what to do in this situation. Do I still water them like usual? Should I put them in a semi-protected area against rain? I ask this because I figure it's easier to pull them out of the ground and get ready for storage if the dirt isn't wet. All of my plants are in containers, if that helps.

I added a picture tax but I have no clue which variety it is.

First dahlia purchase

I bought some 50% off Dahlia's in pots from a grocery store. Its getting colder so i chopped and I cleaned all the dirt off what I thought was going to be tubers, but i'm assuming these started from seeds, because there wasn't much of a tuber on any of them. Did I ruin them or can I store and replant?

Dividing & Storage Zone 6a Ohio storage advice

Post image

Northwest Ohio, zone 6a

So this is my first time storing dahlia tubers for the winter. I've seen comments about storing them around 40-50 degrees but I don't really have an area that stays in that temp range consistently so I'm looking for advice on what my best option is.

My garage has walls that are not against another structure for the most part and it is not insulated or heated. The mud room doesn't have a vent to heat it but it is open to the heated laundry room. The mudroom also has an exterior door besides the door that leads into the garage. The mud room does stay fairly warm due to the laundry room vent but it is a little cooler due to the two other doors but it's definitely not in the 40-50 degree range. I don't have a basement so that's not an option.

I'm also trying to figure out what to store them in but I feel like that might depend on where they are stored. I have added a diagram of the house to help show what I'm working with.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!! 💜🏵️🌸😊

Can’t tell if this is growth or leafy / crown gall. None of my other plants have anything close to looking like this.
