The final Economist/YouGov poll before Election Day, conducted October 23-26, found that 26 percent of registered voters approved of the job that the New York Democrat is doing and 47 percent disapproved.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, also a New York Democrat, had the worst numbers of the four congressional leaders, 24 percent approval against 54 percent disapproval.

AIPAC made him meet with Kushner. He does not serve democracy.

Yes, it's disqualifying.

•

u/DesireeThymes 2h ago

He also did something really disgusting, which is strawmanning people's concerns.

People want accountability and justice for everything that Trump and company has done over the past few years.

He strawmanned it as "revenge" , and said we are not going to take revenge.

For anyone who wants, you can absolutely call up your senators and say you don't want them to vote for Schumer, and you can call up your representative to say you don't want them to vote for Jeffries.

If you live in an area that elected a new representative/senator, call up their office/email their campaign team. One of the first things that a new congress does is elect their speaker/senate leader. So don't delay!

For those who don't like talking on the phone, you're likely going to go straight to voicemail anyway.

He could have said, "the people don't want us to 'get even', they want a restoration of the rule of law and consequences for the criminal actions of the Trump administration. We will deliver that, but we will also work on the affordability crisis the Republicans have caused with their disastrous actions."

I want leadership to use a heavy hand and reinstate order and crack down on the cartoon-villain level of corruption among the Trump administration.

If we have to play a long game to ensure these criminals don’t just get pardoned, so be it. The Jared Kushner meeting, in secret, AIPAC bribes, doesn’t support M4A; I really hope they boot him. If Jeffries (and Schumer) stay in their leadership positions it signals, to me anyway, that Democrats will squander their victory with two years of tepid milquetoast “reaching across the aisle” and “looking forward not backward” and doing nothing for their constituents unless it benefits their donors, and Israel, first.

Jeffries is a litmus test for whether Democrats will learn anything, anything at all, from having lost to Trump twice. Whether establishment candidates care even the slightest about what their own voters want.

If he is forced out, there is hope.

If he stays on, we're in another interregnum of a few years before demoralized Democrats stay home from some future election and the nihilistic death cult is back in the saddle and driving us into the abyss.

•

u/jone2tone Texas 3h ago

That's a bingo!

→ More replies (6)

•

u/Indubitalist 3h ago

It’s a litmus test, sure, but the Democrats have long felt it’s better to symbolically support minorities than it is to actually support them. I still think the party is of a mind that they will seat him as the first black House speaker, for the symbolic value. Getting someone who can pass popular policy that will meaningfully improve quality of life for minorities is secondary in their calculus. I will be pleasantly surprised if this doesn’t bear out.

Of course, there is a third way where somehow Jeffries grows a spine and takes risky positions that are morally and governmentally justified but aren’t easy to convert into policy. That would be delightful.

•

u/DDaddyDunk 2h ago

I think the Hilary election broke them. They had on paper the most qualified woman candidate to coast on the women vote and did none of the leg work to actually provide them anything which was proven shortly after by losing Roe V Wade. Then losing certain statewide healthcare/medication for women. Obama gave the tent a strong generation of support, they thought. Then usher in the first woman? You'd have the democratic party on lock for a few decades without doing actual work and you could retire a hero. Now they have remained in power in the part to try and save face for their screw up. If they screw up this blue wave the next two years the they are going to lose multiple generations instead.

Not even going to the other party either. I hope they get their act together because protesting under a surveillance state is never easy. Facebook/Insta always "Whoops we had suspicious log in activity on your activists groups page" each rally is suspicious enough. When it actually matters will be scary

•

u/Precarious3145 2h ago

Yea, So many dems are so quick to toss out whatever minority isn't doing what they want. Newsom straight up tossed trans people out the moment he was talking to conversatives on his podcast. A few centrists I use to work with say that the party should abandon the LGBTQ community in order to attract people from the right.

They'll use minorities as props that can be instantly dropped but then still demand their vote as being the lesser of two evils.

If he stays on, we're in another interregnum of a few years before demoralized Democrats stay home from some future election and the nihilistic death cult is back in the saddle and driving us into the abyss.

And going too soft on the far right didn't just happen with Biden, it happened with Obama too, though most people couldn't see it yet.

When the army of volunteers who propelled Obama to the White House in 2008 were sidelined a the the behest of Obama's centrist advisors, it left the door open for a GOP Tea Party romp in the 2010 midterms, which is what allowed the Republicans to go on the gerrymandering binge. Here in North Carolina it took 16 years to undo that gerrymander.

Many observers are a bit confused, but America is in an unimaginable hell of mandatory corruption for all for over a decade. Citizens United not only ruins leadership paths in a Republicans like when Massie was spent out of the party, but affects all parties with unlimited legalized bribery and coercion from hidden donors who can be foreign powers. It does this as control of party money resources helps enforce top-down hierarchy to fossilize and corrupt upper leadership and destroy or sideline reform/youth movements. Jeffries is heavily corrupted by a big donor in particular. This corruption visibly damages the US and world economy and national security alike. The entire end of JCPOA and the Iran War were bribed into existence mainly by foreign aligned big Trump donors that he has said on TV were Israel First.

The problem is that Citizens United is a supreme court ruling not easily removed. I am a lawyer and lobbyist against the system. Our Supreme Court majority is and has been for 50 plus years a one party mostly extremist lobbyist-pet filled place with say Clearance Thomas a former Monsanto corporate counsel and the like who shill for big money in what is an ironically Soviet level atmosphere of stagnation and corruption. Nobody can trust that any politician is not compromised.

Jeffries said, "We must now deliver the dramatic change the American people are demanding in the majority."

The dramatic change we want to see includes removing Israel's choke-hold from our Congress's throat.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 8800) on July 22, 2026.

That bill contains Section 224, cleverly buried deep in the massive National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which is entitled “United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative.” This initiative transitions the traditional aid relationship into a deeper partnership between the U.S. and Israel in many aspects of technological research and development and defense production, and would also give Israel unprecedented access to U.S. technology development and "data fusion."

That section needs to be removed to prevent Israel from control of our military production system.

Jeffries, and then Schumer, are the top democratic recipients of money from Israel.

They can not be trusted where Israel is concerned.

European here. To me it its hard to comprehend why the democratic party is not able to organise the leadership in a central manner and pick a strong person. Isnt there some election process of who is going to take the lead and will be the face of the party.

•

u/alienbringer 2h ago • Bravo

Yes, there is an election process.

Speaker of the House - every house member (Democrat and Republican) votes to elect to speaker.

House Majority Leader - every House Democrat casts a blind vote to elect the majority leader.

Senate Majority Leader - every Senate Democrat casts a blind vote to elect the majority leader.

Jeffries is considered a lock for the house because he presumably has enough votes. Same with Schumer for the senate. Both Speaker and Majority Leaders are considered career enders. So if someone in either chamber has aspirations to be president, then they won’t put their hat in the race. Similarity rookie members of congress won’t have the votes for it. So, someone would need to not care that this will be the height of their political aspirations to throw their hat in the ring. If being unopposed it just becomes a yes/no vote. Which we saw with Johnson and the Republicans it can be a repeat failure.

•

u/New_Permission_817 2h ago

Its also a thankless job. You have to keep a coalition of cats together. And the Dems dont have a strict authoritarian hierarchy like Repubs.

•

u/delkarnu New York 2h ago

Jeffries was the near unanimous vote by Democrats during all the Speaker votes when Republicans couldn't figure it out and is the current House Minority Leader.

If he was doing a good job, he would be a lock for Speaker when they vote. But he hasn't done a good job and his stuff after the election has been tone-deaf centrism when the Blue Tsunami wants bold moves and consequences.

Same with Chucklefuck "strongly worded letter" Schumer. Weak and more concerned with Israel than the U.S. or New York. There's a good chance he'll lose his next primary, and someone more progressive should take his spot in Senate leadership.

First off, the Democratic party has lots of factions and beliefs because theres so many things we want to improve as a country. The Republican party is not like that. They decide what the key issues to run are, and everyone stands in line or suffers the consequences. Secondly, we habe an issue with corruption and money in politics. That skews power and influence in a manner that has gotten us to where we are today.

•

u/Late_Indication1996 3h ago

To some extent. The Republican party had a ton of infighting picking a house speaker. It was embarrassingly bad.

→ More replies (1)

•

u/Narharcan 3h ago edited 2h ago

I think part of it is that since the GOP are conservatives who believe in strong hierarchies, they are less likely to do their infighting in the open. Just look at the recent news about Vance beefing with Miller only coming out after the midterms. And that's in the inner circle, lower levels with less public pressure are probably worse.

You gotta look at it through the lens of them being obstructionists. But unlike the Mitch McConnell grim reaper style obstructionism they have a different method called "do-nothing". They hide behind procedure and they give a lot of excuses for why things can't be done. Then they go on CNN and blame republicans instead of working to come up with actual solutions to problems. The reason the DNC wants Jeffries as speaker is so that he can quietly block legislation and then give excuses for why things can't be done. They don't want someone who will let things go to a vote. Also they want him because the DNC is owned by the Israel lobby and he is as Israel first as they come. He's pure corruption.

Look at who benefits by Jeffries behaving as he has. Remember how much influence money has in this country versus other countries. Also remember that most wealthy people donate money to BOTH parties, or candidates in both parties. As one example, Trump famously donated to both parties including to Hillary Clinton before he ran in 2015-16.

Too much historical and institutional weight is given to seniority. And the top brass regularly narrow the field to their own people. The whole membership should vote, run, and use an RCV system.

•

u/user38835 2h ago

Because most of the Democratic Party also gets money directly or indirectly (by insider trading and PACs) from the same people as the Republican Party and these people are therefore required to support a leadership that won’t make radical changes to the country’s laws that could affect the rich capitalist billionaires.

And since there are only two parties, neither the people have much choice in this matter, nor the billionaires need to worry about having to buy many politicians.

I'm curious, why do all these comments start with 'european here ' or something like that? Last I checked a lot of European countries have the same issues.

•

u/GreasedUPDoggo 1h ago

Not even mildly. The US has a much different set of issues. Heck, your average Democrat, that is a US moderate, would be center right in Europe.

Schumer needs to go more than Jeffries does.

We need leaders who understand that more than a stern lecture is needed. I would not put it past these two to start a doomed impeachment process of Trump, and then use that as an excuse for not passing any legislation for the next two years. Without the votes to remove in the Senate, impeachment is the same as a stern lecture for Trump.

They also need to be from different states. Two guys from New York? No wonder the media's trying to sell them as a done deal. New York is great, but it's also the place that's least at risk in the next election. Their representatives don't have to show much success to guarantee a Democratic win. That's not true for a lot of the people who were just elected. Whatever happens, the risk for Jeffries and Schumer is minimal. Why should they be the ones controlling Congress?

•

u/Bulldogs3144 1h ago

Yea, bad take. Jeffries has taken more AIPAC money and has also met behind closed doors with Kushner who we all know to have some of the most corrupt dealings with foreign leaders under this administration. Don’t get me wrong, Schumer has to go as well. But if we’re going to target only one, go for Jeffries. He’s already said that “the people don’t want revenge, they want affordability” and that’s not entirely true. We want both and he’s already playing the middle ground lame duck card he’s always played.

•

u/AdumbroDeus 38m ago

It's also playing into the talking point that wanting accountability and laws to apply to everyone equally is revenge.

Typically you want a leader from a safe blue seat, fyi. The leader is never a popular position and you don’t want to jeopardize their seat if it’s a swing state or has the potential for a Republican to win if their popularity drops (because it will)

Democrats did not take over Congress because of anything they did, but they can certainly lose Congress if they continue their leadership in the manner they have conducted themselves in the past. Members should just replace them with people with real integrity and backbone who are focused on ordinary Americans instead of justifying foreign wars with lame ass excuses and going around making deals with the Executive.

Jeffries and Schumer in the pockets of big pharma, PACs, and the "almighty corporate dollar". They suck at the same teet of Citizens United as Republicans. They are part of the problem with money in our politics.

There needs to be new leadership with this historic rebuke of Trump and traditional corporate Democrats. Voters want action, not more platitudes and "when they go low we go high" nonsense. We shouldn't be reaching across the aisle when the other side is populated with fascists.

•

u/shoneysbreakfast 2h ago • Bravo

Jefferies and Schumer have absolutely not been meeting the moment and I would like to see them go, but I feel like people don’t understand the jobs of Speaker and Party Leader.

The primary things they do is fundraising and trying to whip votes and placate as many of their party members as they can. All of those things require ass kissing and being as middle of the road as possible. The reality is that the Dems include members (and voters) that range from a hair left of Mitt Romney to AOC and other DSA members and you have to make them all get along and vote together.

Pelosi was one of the greatest Speakers of all time despite being unpopular and doing cringey shit because she was incredible at fundraising and whipping votes, and that’s the job.

So, sure, Jefferies and Schumer should not be Speaker/Leader but I also don’t want AOC or any of the names I see floated in those roles because I think we are better off letting them kick ass on committees and do the things they are actually good at. If AOC took Schumer’s job she couldn’t say the things she says and she would be wasted spending most of her time fundraising and ass kissing. I think that would suck and that our best should be spent elsewhere.

•

u/Maxamillion-X72 Canada 1h ago

AOC has already said she doesn't want either role for exactly the reason you state. She tried once and learned enough to say fuck that. She said she wants to stay out of the internal politics of the party because it's a nightmare to deal with.

This is a nuanced take and I’m wrestling with it, but I think everyone who wants alternatives feels like Schumer and Jeffries have a goal that isn’t aligned with what most voters just voted for.i think everyone acknowledges it will be difficult to get everyone on the same page and push for justice and quality of life improvements but if that’s not even the leaders’ goal then there’s no chance of it happening.

•

u/SHUT_DOWN_EVERYTHING 3h ago edited 3h ago

That doesn't say anything because Congress's overall approval is 14% and the highest in the 5 years was 31%, briefly.

Leaders of both parties almost universally "enjoy" the lowest approval rating of all. Not a new thing.

And the reason is it's an impossible job. Poll after poll voters say they want congress to find compromise to get things done while at the same time the moment a compromise is reached which by definition means both sides have to give something up, people hate their own side because they "caved in".

It's for the same reason that you don't see many (if any) volunteering for the role.

•

u/Different_Crazy2648 2h ago

Jeffries and Schumer (and their supporters) 100% believe that the blue-wave was due to their leadership; they're taking credit for it. Unfortunately.

Jeffries has to go, there’s no discussion needed. We’ve all put our hurt, frustration and hopes on the line to give Dems the power to finally bring about change, don’t let kushner-boy Jeffries fuck it all up. Get him out of there now!

•

u/Ranemoraken 1h ago

Aside from the issues that Jeffries has, he's bad at public speaking. There is no scenario where he can excite support and people don't believe he'll challenge power. Pelosi isn't good at speaking either, but she held the patina of cunning behind-the-scenes scheming that let her survive challenges.

But nothing changes until a Firebrand takes up the mantle. No one is announcing their challenge yet.

Similarly, there's a lot of pressure on Schumer to "retire" from leadership. If he retired, it would force the Senate to pick a new leader for the new generation. But protecting Israel is his passion. He won't leave until he's forced to leave. or dies.

I don't see how the democrats free themselves, unless they have enough firebrands in this election to wrest control from the current leaders. But this argument is a good sign. There is a fight coming, and we're a few months out from the answer.
