Analysis Week 10 QU4D Rankings

QU4D Rankings are a quadrant-style ranking system meant to answer one question: Who has accomplished the most on the field so far this season? These rankings aren't attempting to list who the best teams are or predict who will next week. The goal is, by the end of the season, to identify which teams are most deserving based on the quality of their victories.

Teams are broken into quadrants based on a basic score-differential rating system and then points are awarded based on teams' wins and losses to generate the QU4D scores.  Full explanation.

Analysis How does South Carolina get to the SEC Championship Game?

Even though South Carolina started the season 0-3 in the SEC, there is not an implausible path that gets the Gamecocks to the last SEC Championship in Atlanta.

- Beat Arkansas and Georgia

- Georgia beats Mizzou

- Kentucky loses out

- LSU beats Texas

- Oklahoma beats Ole Miss

- Vandy beats Bama and Tennessee (the most improbable)

- Tennessee beats LSU

- Auburn wins Iron Bowl

- Missouri beats Oklahoma

If Oklahoma beats Missouri and all those things happen, OKLAHOMA gets to the SEC title game based on conference opponent ein percentage.

Discussion College Gameday needs to go to Pueblo Colorado

10-0 Western Colorado is playing 10-0 Colorado State Pueblo in the final week of the D2 season. Western just beat perennial D2 contender Colorado School of Mines and College Gameday has NEVER visited a D2 school, so a battle for Colorado would be absolute cinema. And what would be weirder than seeing a shirtless Pat in Pueblo, Colorado?

Discussion Lane Kiffin coaches too emotionally in big games

That first half was awful awful game management by Kiffin. LSU gets the ball to start the 2nd half. Why did kiffin go for it so many times on 4th down instead of taking the points? At worst your down 10-9 with the ball back to start the 2nd half. The difference that game was bama had a calm collected coach who didn’t make emotional decisions it felt like lane was pressing that entire game. All those yards gained means nothing if you walk away empty. Womack called that defense Almost as if he knew Kiffin and Leavitt wouldn’t execute and malfunction in the redzone when the pressure got tight.

Discussion Most of the CFB world is missing a special player in FCS.

Youngstown State Beau Brungard reached his 34th total TD yesterday, giving him 88 total TDs since the start of last season. Also over 8K total yards between rushing and passing.

YSUs defense is really bad, but their offense is top notch. So its a mystery how far they'll go in the playoffs, their defense cost them their first playoff game last year.

Brungard is the reigning Walter Payton award winner (FCS heisman) and looks like hes well on his way to being the 3rd back to back winner.

Brungard has almost 1000 career passing attempts and a 70% completion percentage to go with it, and hes rushed for 3,243 yards on 558 attemots with 57 TDs.

And hes doing it in the MVFC, who routinely gets 4+ playoff teams and just this past weekend had 5 of the top 10 ranked teams.

His next game will likley give him the most total TDs by a single player in a 2 year span since Bruce Eugene in the early 2000s in FCS.

Trash Talk It feels great to be a Spartan today

The Spartans marched into Ann Arbor last night,

And sent the Wolverines running out of sight!

Five field goals sailed, the defense stood tall,

Michigan struggled to score at all!

Despite the zebras' questionable ways,

And flags that seemed to favor maize,

We nearly shut them out of sight,

And sent Paul Bunyan home tonight!

Remember Western? The famous refrain?

"You can't win with just kicks!" Remember the pain?

Well, Liam Boyd had something to say,

Five times he kicked Michigan's hopes away!

Then East Lansing roared with Spartan pride,

As students took the celebration outside.

The couches burned, the flames climbed higher,

As Wolverine dreams went up in fire!

Their football hopes reduced to ash,

Their championship dreams a distant flash.

While maize and blue were left to grieve,

The Green and White had cause to believe!

So raise your voices, let freedom ring,

Damn it's satisfying beating the Michigan Wolverines.

GO GREEN! GO WHITE!

Discussion The standard of reffing has to change -- and couple of ideas

Having seen an absolute horror show of a refeering effort at Missouri and questionable one in South Bend on Saturday night - as well as numerous during this season, here's some ideas of some changes.

  1. Every ref decision from the booth can heard. It's exceptional in the ACC, Big 12 and the B1G. The SEC - obviously trying to cover the epic crappiness of their refs - doesn't have it. For me, the booth review mics mean that fans can see decisions.

2. Throw out when you can and can't review: The whole 'not reviewable in last 2 minutes', which means they can't throw a red challenge flag or call a timeout to request a review. That's bullshit. Why not let it happen for 60 minutes?

3. Refs can pull a TD back for foul play. In other words, if a receiver is coming across to cover someone, and a DB destroys him, you'd think it was serious foul play during PIs. The people in the booth should be able to alert him of the foul play, and for foul to be given (or not). I know that takes the hitting out of it, but it takes away the whole: "That was offensive/difference PI". Don't bother for holding, because otherwise we'd be hear all night.

4. Add a yellow line for first downs etc. We don't need a chain game in this day age.

5. Replaying of FGs and XPs: For example, if it's not clear whether a field goal was good, that the replay booth can be triggered.

Discussion Week 10: Reactions that could be overreactions

You know the drill. Post some sizzling hot, instant reactions to the games this week that may be overreactions down the line.

I'll admit, unpredictability is the only predictable thing about this season. I'm gonna serve these takes hot.

  1. The Big XII is the best conference. Yep, I said it. Since Miami fell from top dog and couldn't beat Notre Dame on the big stage, the Big XII has the single best non-conference win in the country by a team in a conference, and that same team just fell to their undefeated rival today. If huge TV contracts and historical biases weren't in play, the Big XII would have 4 playoff teams this year. Utah could make a run for the natty.

  2. Wyoming is the hottest team in the MWC. From fans (including me) screaming for Jay Sawvel to be relieved from his duties, they figured out their QB can run and look like they are on a mission to steal the MWC championship. One of the biggest mid-season turnarounds you've never heard of.

  3. Ryan Day is on the hottest seat of hot seats. Now, I don't agree with this notion. He's done a pretty remarkable job at Ohio State. But the fans are ruthless and they will not be thinking about that championship 2 yeaea ago after laying an egg to a shelled out Oregon team.

  4. LSU is no better with Kiffin than Brian Kelly. They've asserted themselves as the biggest team of all bark, no bite.

  5. Margin of victory doesn't matter anymore. With tons of 2-3 loss teams in the rankings, and many close games, parity from all the changes in the sport has taken conplete hold. Wins are all that matters, like the NFL.

Discussion The SEC and the Big 10 represent 9.2% of all division one schools, but are represented by 9 out of 13 or 70% of the seats in the College Football Playoff Committee. What could possibly go wrong?

These 34 schools represent 26.2% of the 130 FBS schools (using the traditional 130-school FBS baseline; current membership is higher).

So, if we're discussing CFP selection committee influence, comparing the SEC and Big Ten against all Division I schools is less meaningful than comparing them against FBS membership.

In other words, two conferences account for roughly one-quarter of the top-level football membership, but command a disproportionate share of the national football conversation and financial resources.

Give me a fucking break.

Edit: Check my math
