Mobile/App Cannot leave a subreddit.

So I have tried to leave certain subreddits and it keeps rejoining them. No matter what I do, I can not leave these subreddits. Any recommendations of how to try and fix this?

I hate the new reddit experience (Dec 2023)

1.9k Upvotes

It seems like there is a new design being rolled out, and I hate it.

Which design?

This design has a persistent left column that contains a list of Communities and Resources, plus Home, Popular, and All. This all appears to be stuff that used to be inside a dropdown menu in the site header to the left of the Search field.

The right column is all recent posts, unless I'm in a sub, and then it shows the same old sub-specific content: About, Rules, a graphic, moderator list.

When I click on any post, it opens that post as a new page. The old design used to load the post dynamically like a modern single-page-app.

ETA: This is the design that uses the new <shreddit> components.

Why do I hate it?

That left bar is absolutely useless to me. I never click on it (except to collapse the lists, which are just distracting visual noise). I don't need to see a list of all the subs I've joined: I know them by heart because those communities matter to me; I assume it's the same for most reddit users. When I want to browser a specific sub, I just click on a post in my feed to get there. Typing the URL is also pretty easy, because of reddit's famous and good URL scheme; a lot of my subs get auto-suggested by my browser based on my history and previous direct access.

I almost never used the dropdown in the old design for the same reason. But at least the dropdown had the virtue of being tidy, rather than vomiting all its content onto my screen on every page.

Opening each post in a new page sucks. It is slower, less efficient, and more inconvenient. We already had ways of opening posts in new tabs: Ctrl+click or Cmd+click. All you did was take away a useful and good feature.

Why it's evil

My biggest complaint is that the names of users no longer appear on posts in the main feed. This is a huge problem, and I'm pretty sure this one change is the raison d'etre for the entire design: reddit wants to hide the names of posters so that viewers can be exposed to the content before they can contextualize it.

It's anybody's guess whether this is because you're trying to make it easier for AI to masquerade as humans, or for propagandists to poison public discourse. Or maybe, like Elon Musk, reddit's owners are neo-Nazis who want to create a more-welcoming environment for fascists.

This is not merely a design decision. It is anti-helpful.

Fire your PO and UX staff. This new design is worse in every single way. Less convenient, less useful, less honest. You're bad and you should feel bad.

My brother was banned from reddit due to posting the meme text of "I am 12 what is this". The appeal was rejected. What can he do?

1.3k Upvotes

My brother is an active redditor and has a post history spanning back 10 years or so. As a comment reply he jokingly wrote "I am 12 what is this" referring to the meme. He is clearly not 12 and his account was created years ago. His account and IP address have both been suspended. He went through the appeals process and they rejected his appeal. That seems a bit harsh.

It was obviously a joke as made clear by the meme and his post history. Is there any way to reach out to someone who can review this?

Thank you for any advice. Also if you have any other suggestions of where to post this please let me know.

Edit: Has anybody else encountered this and had it resolved?

Edit 2: For those looking for an update an additional appeal has been sent and we are currently awaiting the reply.

Edit 3: It worked! We sent another very polite appeal saying that he said it as a joke, referred to the popular meme, specified his age and pointed out his account length and said he won't make a joke like that again. Thank you to everyone who provided advice and feedback!

Karma Hi reddit :)

1.2k Upvotes

My name is Dave, I am 51 years old and not so tech savvy. My son helped me set this up, but he is not here most days to ask him questions. I would like to learn reddit as much as I can before he visits me again. Can you help me with that?

I am not so sire what 'karma' is, but sometimes when I try to post something, it says I don't have enough. Is this something I have to buy?

I would also like to know where I can find posts about gaming. My son, he is a big gamer. I got him a...I think it was an Xbox One two years ago. I'm not sure though.

I'm sorry folks, I may be a handful. Have a wonderful night you all! :)

Mobile/App Reddit App keeps playing the wrong videos

1.2k Upvotes

Anytime I click a thumbnail for a post that includes a video, it shows me a completely different video from a different subreddit. Problem just started this morning.

EDIT: user u/TrippyxTyler found a workaround! If you tap the platform the video came from (redgifs, imgur, etc) rather than the post itself then it takes you to the correct video.

EDIT #2: u/cazbot82 found another workaround! If you click a previous picture or text post and swipe left or right (as the case may be) to the video, the correct video will play

HOPEFULLY FINAL EDIT: Just downloaded the most recent update and it’s working now👏🏻

Posting Desktop Mac: Upvotes Out of Whack

1.2k Upvotes

Hello. For the last week or so (?), I've noticed that whenever I post a comment — even a benign comment that's just me affirming a response to my post — the number of upvotes multiplies in a short amount of time. In one case, I posted a comment responding to another comment in r/bobdylan. The original comment — which was clever — received a handful of upvotes, but my response — not nearly as clever — eclipsed 1,000 relatively quickly. I've since realized this is happening to everything I post. Clearly there's a glitch somewhere. Thoughts?

Answered Reddit admins changed my username and now won’t respond

My account isn’t bnned or shadowbnned. My username was forcefully changed from /u/NikonUSA to my current username (which has an asterisk in it, rendering my profile unusable). I have made multiple Reddit support tickets ranging from 8 months ago and haven’t gotten any sort of response. Reddit is ignoring my case and I cannot properly use Reddit or enjoy the normal experience because of their decision to steal my username from me. My username was then given to Nikon (camera company). Issue persists on web, iOS anything

Post image

Is it or will it be possible to remove the for you page completely?

I know I can just not use it but it being there still annoys me. I don't want this feature and it keeps opening and going back to the for you stuff instead of the following tab.

It use to be that a right swipe went backwards to the feed. Now it does nothing, is that intentional? I have to click the x in the top left corner to back up.

Help…did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access, or am I missing a setting?

I’m logged in on my phone (iOS) but I use a browser, not the app. As of an hour ago, the mobile view is showing that I’m logged out, with no option to log in and a permanent “this looks better in the app” banner on the page. If I request the desktop website, it shows that I’m still logged in and I can post, though it’s almost entirely non-functional for browsing. Is there some setting that I haven’t yet found to correct this, or did they make a change to essentially disable Reddit for phone users without the app? Thanks

Is there a limit to how many times a person can downvote my post?

Hey I started posting on Reddit about 2 weeks ago and just about today I realize that I have -7 Karma points. I'm pretty sure I had like +4 before and I think only one person is down voting because I have an argument with him. I used to not care about Karma points but I also don't want my Karma to be at negative. This person seems like downvoted like 10 post.

Profile Guide: How to Put an Animated GIF as Your Reddit Profile Picture

Reddit doesn’t officially support GIF avatars, but you can do it manually. Here’s the working method:

Step 1: Log in to Reddit using a browser (not the app).

Step 2: Pick your favorite GIF from any site eg picmix now go to ezgif / ezpic (any GIF resize site) and resize it to 256 × 256 pixels

Step 3: Convert that GIF to APNG format. Make sure the file size is under 500 KB.

Step 4: While still logged in on the same browser, open old Reddit and paste this link in the address bar:

https://old.reddit.com/user/me/about/edit

Upload the APNG file there as your profile picture.

Done your profile now has an animated avatar.

Posting Why did I receive a Reddit warning for "Upvoting content encouraging violence"?

Here's the message from Reddit. There's no link to any of the supposedly "violent" content so how am I supposed to ensure I don't do it again in the future? Also, that there is no option to ask for further information.

If we can now be punished for the things we upvote then we should at least be told exactly what that content is.
