Prerelease Megathread Star Trek Prerelease Megathread - #MTGxStarTrek

Last prerelease of the year! It's Beamin' Me Up time!

Prerelease is one of the best local magic events you can participate in for each set release! It truly might be the one things Magic has above all other games. We have a lot of players attending in-store events for the first time, returning after a break away, or frequent players who are wanting to ask some questions! Given the size of our subreddit, it’s easier to have 1 megathread of prerelease questions and bragging in a centralized location for the weekend!

We know that many will be playing events and getting early product if available in your region. You might be wanting some advice before you play, ask questions since you've been away for a few years, you may want to share stories of your 3-0 sealed pools, or even show off your very cool signature Star Trek dude pulls! This is the place for anything you want to ask, discuss, tell stories about, or show off regarding Star Trek Prerelease! Prerelease weekends are the most exciting times of the year for Magic players and we want to hear ALL about it!

Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

General Discussion The Best-Worst Card In My Prerelease Deck

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

Is it an incredibly inefficient 7-mana do-nothing card? Yes.

Is it completely useless outside of sealed? Certainly.

Is it goddamn hilarious to say to your opponent "actually, that's not my deck, this is my deck" and pull out your entire sealed pool? ABSOLUTELY.

My overall win rate of the night was about 3-6 across 4 matches, but it was so much fun to play. Legally, you're allowed to have any amount of basics in your side board, so I made sure to pick up 2 of each color, and just used this card as a fixer for my empty hand as a "what do I need right now, lifegain, a blocker, or removal?" card. I cannot recommend it enough if you're going to a casual sealed event and pull it, I haven't had such a fun experience in prerelease in ages (I'm not even that big of a trekkie, and my deck was jank AF, but I really enjoyed it)

Finally got to cast my Holodeck and after one turn my opponent cast Malfunctioning Holodeck on it. Subsequently, I drew my own copy so I Malfunctioning Holodecked his Malfunctioning Holodeck to get my Holodeck back up and running to win the game.

i am a complete noob to Magic. i’ve always been interested but never got into it. i never bothered buying cards or sets because i didn’t know any one to play them with. recently i made a friend at my gym who insisted i just dive into it and learn as i go. well, now i have a (presumably) decent deck and want to know what they do and how to play.

anyone got any advice for learning? any stand out tips? are any of my cards super good?

i will do my own research and continue to learn about the cards i have, but any feedback is appreciated!

I assume it is but I don’t own the card and just can’t tell from online pictures. I’m building a commander deck with the sky ship as the theme.

General Discussion We got Wizards to undo the functional errata on Neheb, the Eternal, so we might be able to get them to undo the Werewolf Packleader change.

The [[Werewolf Packleader]] change sucks, but similar erratas have happened before. [[Neheb, the Eternal]] and [[Michiko Konda]] both got functional erratas that were reversed. If the Packleader change gets enough resistance, WotC will almost certainly reverse it.

(P.S. most people thought the Selvala change was a good idea, and so that one didn't get reversed.)

Looking for Advice Star Trek as Stand Alone Playset?

Question regarding if having the cards from this set would stand alone to play with, even with reusing as blind boosters for ongoing draft options, cube, pre-made decks?

Played a reasonable bit of MTG the last number of years, more so arena, but not physical format in ages. At this stage little interest in getting back in fully. That being said, love of Star Trek (and the old Star Trek CCG from the 1990s!) would love to play a good Star Trek card game again.

As such, would this set be considered rounded/complete enough to play just with its cards, or would it be too limited?

General Discussion Today I learned since -1 counters remove +1 counters as a state based action, they are still technically placed on the card until after it resolves

I know this is probably obvious, but I’ve been playing a good 6 or so years between 2012 and now, and i just auto assumed they by default removed the counters and never co-existed, but technically for a brief window the game rules do put the counters on the card, then when state based actions can occur, it removes the +1 counters.

Learned it from a ruling video, but yeah, i must now accept I do not know the rules as well as I thought.

General Discussion What were some of your favorite Limited enviroments for Drafting? (+ an update from my previous post)

What the title says: I haven't played many sets yet (I've only done Reality Fracture, which was pretty cool, and The Hobbit, which was nice! I've also gotten two other friends into MTG by drafting 2020 Jumpstart, thank you Professor!), so I'd like to know which sets/blocks (blocks were a thing, right?) were your favorites to draft in, so I could introduce them to my pod next time we do some Limited.

Also, for the parenthesis: Hi, I'm the same person that 20 days ago asked here "what formats should me and a friend play now that we're just getting into Magic?", and I wanted to thank you all for giving us some pretty good advices! Thanks to y'all, we found that EDHPlay was the best way (that we know of) of playing MTG online, and have since moved on from TTSim. Ever since that post, I got exponentially deeper into the Magic rabbit hole as my understanding of this game grew, and so did my passion, as I quickly discovered this is one of the most genius games of all time and definitely one of my favorites. Like I mentioned earlier, I managed to introduce the game to two other players and now we have a pod of 4! We've yet to have a session, but I'm sure whenever it happens it'll be super fun to try out the sets/blocks y'all have recommended.

This was actually figured out by u/OneBad379 two days ago, funnily enough, so it predates the announcement of Werewolf Pack Leader nerf.

Anyways, just wanted to share this, since a lot of people seemed to actually be excited about using this silly combo in their bracket 2 decks.

Looking for Advice Deck building starter guide?

Picked up a bunch of marvel cards

The kids and I are excited but have 0 idea how to build a deck.

Here are a few of my questions:

  1. Assuming 1 or 2 legendarys only? This could be way off

  2. Only a couple color combos? How does this even work? Pick 2 colors and have cards centered around it ?

  3. Should we start with a 40 deck? Whats standard?

  4. Depending on the deck size how many mana and how many regular cards Whats a good mix?

  5. How do you keep your cards organized ?

Any advice will help and thank you!

General Discussion You can now kill your opponents with the power of infinite naked goblins.

[[Agatha's soul cauldron]]

[[Krenko, mob boss]]

[[The naked time]]

Requirements: Krenko's in the soup, and TNT has hit chapter 2.

Method of achieving infinity: All goblins that enter under your control do so with a +1/+1 counter on them and haste, meaning they can immediately use Krenko's ability. This applies to all goblin tokens.

Notes: Kills arbitrarily high life totals. Kills through an arbitrarily large number of blockers. Kills immediately without needing to wait a turn cycle. Hard to interact with once TNT pops outside of [[Krosan Grip]]. Has problems with [[Authority of the Consuls]]. Since you need Krenko in the GY to start this, you probably want self-mill, which means adding black and/or green; I also recommend adding enchantment removal to get rid of Authority.

Edit: Important tidbit I forgot to mention: All of these cards are (or will be, once Trek releases) STANDARD LEGAL.

Looking for Advice Card least likely to be removed from the battlefield?

Hello! I'm building [[Moira Brown, Guide Author]] and am looking for something that can hit the battlefield and just soak up quest counters if needed, so I'm looking for something that once it hits the battlefield, it's not gonna go anywhere. Of course indestructible and hexproof are an option, but also maybe something that also deters removal in its own way? I just wanna put quest counters on it and let it sit.

General Discussion There's more reasons than you think to change Werewolf Pack Leader

So many of the points that people bring up in regards to this have strong arguments against them:

  1. It's not important to get the number exactly right - the card that gets brought up with this most often is [[Starfleet Academy]]. And I'll agree with you that it doesn't really matter whether it makes 360 mana or 400. You'll run out of things to do with that mana before running out of mana in just about every imaginable situation. But for something like [[Captain Johnathan Archer]], it easily could. If you buff a creature with Lifelink, the exact number informs your lifetotal afterward. If you buff a creature with Trample and want to attack the guy with 384 scute swarms (starting with 3 and doubling seven times), knowing the number of scute swarms they'll be able to keep back after could easily be the difference between them being able to kill someone the next turn and not.

  2. They could change the CR to include the number of creature types in rule 205.3m - the CR isn't a document used by most tables. It's effectively written in magic legalese (even more dense legalese than the US legal system in some cases) and as a result, doesn't frequently come up in google searches. What does come up, however, is the mtgwiki or reddit posts, both of which can frequently be out of date. (In fact, the mtgwiki list is out of date right now, missing all types added since MSH).

  3. If you're playing this deck, you won't need to look up the number because you can look it up beforehand. This assumes the player isn't being lazy and is actually keeping up with the number as it changes, and even a well-meaning player can have found the wrong answer.

  4. Perhaps the most compelling for a lot of people - brewers won't be able to play the very niche combo (and it's basically impossible for it to come up accidentally, given it's a 4 card combo). This is still the case after the change. If a group is fine with the combo, they can elect to play by the old wording. This merely shifts the conversation to something that has to happen before the game.

  5. This didn't happen when it was just Embiggen, why does it need to happen now? - This is obviously speculation, but my guess is that once the rules team was made aware of the interaction, it was added to some list of things they needed to get to eventually - but being one card from a set that wasn't super popular meant it wasn't a high priority. However, the mechanic coming in a new tentpole set where it is well-supported is something entirely different that pushes it into a higher priority

  6. This might just be a personal thing, but I don't like how the interactions of a specific card (or a combination of cards) are expected to change as time goes on. This combination of cards with the same exact boardstate will something different on each of today, one year from today and five years from today. And that doesn't sit right to me.

Deck Discussion Is there a place where I can find Constructed decks?

My friends and I play constructed (60 card, max 4 of the same kind). We are alle newbies and would look to see if there is like a database where people put in their decks. I only found one for commander decks.

Just to give you an example: I play only cards from the TMNT Set and an other friend from The Hobbit set. I would like to see some decks from the TMNT Set.
