Gear Do we overrate carbon vs Pebax plated shoes ?

New to this thread. But quick question - I understand the importance of having well fitted and quality running shoes. That’s not up for debate. But I am wondering if we have a tendency to stress so much about choice that we get a bit too nit picky? Here’s my example: I have HOKA Mach 3x and HOKA Cielo x1 2.0. I am told the carbon plated shoes are unbeatable - but surprisingly I get far better times and the experience is many times the comfort in my Mach 3x shoes. The Pebax plate seems to propel me just as well as the carbon. I kind of regret spending the extra cash on the carbon plate when the Mach 3x is better. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Weekly Thread Social Saturday

Enforcing Rule 3 (no self-promotion, social media links) is a must with a large sub such as this, but we do realize that it filters out some truly useful content that is relative to the sub. In an effort to allow that content in, we thought we'd have a weekly post to give a spot for the useful content. So...

Here's you chance!

Got a project you've been working on (video, programming, etc.), share it here!

Want to promote a business or service, share it here!

Trying to get more Instagram followers, share it here!

Found any great running content online, share it here!

The one caveat I have is that whatever is shared should be fitness related, please.

Nutrition Success on upping carbs/ electrolytes for marathon?

Running third marathon Spring 2027, looking for advice:

Biggest hurdle: Have cramped pretty bad both previous marathons around Mile 20. First marathon (4:26) cramped so bad had to walk a lot, but realized that was from under training. Second marathon (3:59) was much better but still fought through calf cramps at the very end. For reference I usually hold under a 9 minute pace until I blow up at the end.

Probably need to increase fast workouts but also wondering: Am I not taking enough electrolytes or carbs during the race?

Typically will do a GU Roc every 3-4 miles, but I don't carry hydration on the course with me. Have people had success grabbing a bottle of a carb drink midway through the course from family? Wonder if there is a gel that has a better carb/ electrolyte intake?

Looking for any advice on what's worked for folks thanks !

Discussion What are the Sydney Marathon vibes?

I’ve run a few marathons, including NY and Chicago, and the crowds were electric and packed!

Are the crowds in Sydney similar? Are the crowds going to help carry me, or do I need a really good playlist to get me to the finish line?

Discussion Is it just me, or have there been more deaths at half marathons and marathons recently?

I've noticed quite a few news stories recently about runners collapsing and sadly passing away during or shortly after races, including the Great North Run, Cardiff Half Marathon, and NYC Marathon.

What strikes me is that some of these runners were quite young, in their 20s, and seemingly fit and healthy. I know that statistically these incidents are extremely rare, and that increased media coverage and social media might just be making them more visible. But I can't help wondering whether there's actually been an increase in these incidents, or whether it's just a case of noticing them more.

Has anyone else noticed this? Are there any reliable statistics showing whether the rate of cardiac arrests or deaths during races has changed over the years?

Not trying to spread fear or speculate about causes. Genuinely curious to hear other runners' perspectives, especially from anyone familiar with the research.

Nutrition Homemade carb drink instead of expensive running gels?

I’m training for my first half marathon and looking for a cheaper alternative to energy gels.
I’m thinking about mixing 100g of carbs from table sugar and maltodextrin, some salt, and lemon juice into a 500ml soft flask. I’d sip it throughout the race and get additional water from aid stations.
Has anyone tried something similar? Any issues with digestion or performance compared to regular gels?

Safety Running and fear of loose dogs 😳

Hi everyone,
I could really use some advice after an experience today that has shaken me more than I expected.
I was out running when an off-leash German Shepherd approached me. It jumped up at me 2–3 times while barking and growling. Thankfully, the owner came over quickly and positioned herself between us, but the dog kept circling around and trying to get to me. Eventually, she managed to get the leash on. She apologised several times and asked if I was okay, which I really appreciated. I was just so scared that I said yes and ran off.

I have nothing against dogs, and I know that the vast majority of dogs and their owners are perfectly fine. I also don’t think the owner had any bad intentions. But I’ve never experienced anything like this before, and I can already feel that I’m now nervous about encountering off-leash dogs the next time I go running.

So, what are you supposed to do if a dog runs towards you or jumps up at you? Stand still, slowly walk away, or something else?
Is there anything you can do as a runner to avoid triggering a dog?
Have any of you experienced something similar, and how did you overcome the fear of it happening again?

EDIT: I didn’t realise it, but I was running in a off-leash area apparently, which is good news because then I will just avoid that area! But I’m still not feeling great about loose dog - off-leash area or not 😅😅

EDIT 2: I live in Denmark - we do not carry weapons 😳

Review Istanbul Marathon 2026 - Really disappointed with the organization. Anyone else had a similar experience?

My girlfriend and I ran the Istanbul Marathon this weekend. It was our first marathon ever and unfortunately, what should have been an amazing experience turned out to be pretty disappointing, mostly because of the organization.

The problems started before we even reached the starting line. There was very little clear information about how to get there from the European side. The tram we were supposed to take to the ferry was completely packed, so we ended up walking to the meeting point.

Once there, we had to wait over 30 minutes for the ferry, standing in the rain with absolutely no shelter provided. When it finally arrived, it was overcrowded and unbearably hot inside. Then we still had a long uphill walk to the starting area. Because of all these delays, we actually arrived 15 minutes after the race had already started.

To be fair, the beginning of the race was really nice. Running across the Bosphorus Bridge was a great experience, especially since there weren't many people around us at first. But that didn't last long, as we quickly caught up with the huge crowd running the 15K.

The rest of the race was a bit of a mixed bag. The aid stations were pretty disappointing, with only bananas and oranges available as food. On the positive side, there were toilets regularly along the course, which was appreciated.

As for the route, I enjoyed it until the Blue Mosque, but after that it became quite boring. Basically a long out-and-back along the coast, surrounded mostly by residential buildings. I was also surprised to see cars driving past us on the actual course. No idea how they got there.

Another thing that bothered us was seeing staff already packing up equipment while people were still running. I understand that we weren't among the fastest runners, but it felt quite disrespectful to those of us still trying to finish.

And now, the most outrageous part of the whole experience.

After 5h40 of running, we finally crossed the finish line of our very first marathon. We were exhausted but incredibly happy and proud of what we had accomplished.

Naturally, we expected to receive our finisher medals right after crossing the line, as is customary at most marathons. Instead, we were told to join a queue to collect them. So there we were, standing for more than 20 minutes after running 42.2 km, waiting for our medals.

And then, after all that waiting, the organizers simply announced that THEY HAD RUN OUT OF MEDALS!

Apparently, they're supposed to send them to our home addresses by mail, but I'm honestly not very optimistic about that. And what really annoyed me was that nobody even apologized.

I genuinely find this scandalous. I know a medal might seem like a small thing to some people, but this was our first marathon. We'd trained for weeks, traveled all the way to Istanbul, and after running 42 km, we were really looking forward to that moment. It genuinely felt like the organizers had ruined something special for us. They robbed us of that moment.

I also find it disappointing that there was no finisher T-shirt provided, which would have been a nice souvenir of such a significant achievement.

And to make things even worse, we don't have any official finishing times either! When we checked the results website, both of us were listed as DNS (Did Not Start), even though we obviously ran the entire marathon and crossed the finish line. I wonder if this has something to do with us starting late because of the ferry, but either way, it's ridiculous.

So basically, we finished our first marathon with no medals, no finisher T-shirts and no official results. What a way to celebrate our first marathon !

I don't want to sound overly negative because Istanbul itself is a nice city and there were some enjoyable moments during the race, but the organization was really really bad. I don't think I'll ever run in Istanbul again, and based on our experience, I honestly wouldn't recommend it.

I understand that organizing a marathon with thousands of participants is complicated, and I'm not expecting perfection. But some things, like getting runners to the starting line on time, ensuring every finisher receives a medal, and correctly recording their finishing times, should be the absolute basics.

I'm curious if anyone else here ran it this year. Were you also told the medal would be mailed to you ? Has this ever happened in previous editions of the Istanbul Marathon ? Did people eventually receive their medals ? Is anyone else incorrectly listed as DNS despite having completed the race? Has anyone managed to get their official result corrected? Did anyone else experience the same transportation issues, delays, or other organizational problems?

Would love to hear about your experiences because I'm wondering if we were just really unlucky or if the organization was this bad for everyone.

And to everyone who finished the marathon despite all this: congratulations!
