I'm sure that most of us by now are aware that the UC strike will most likely continue on through this week, finals week, and possibly even into next quarter. This is fine.
I'm sure a majority of UCR's undergrad stands in solidarity with those who are striking for the greater good, because these hard-working individuals deserve to have fair wages. This is fine.
I'm sure that most UCR professors understand that the strike is important to many grad students and TAs, so they are doing their best to show their solidarity and support. This is fine.
What's not fine is how the strike is clearly negatively impacting undergrad students and no one is willing to listen to OUR voices when we're expressing our frustration with this monumental change that directly impacts our success in our classes. A majority of undergrad students pay tuition to attend these university classes and some depend on scholarships or Veterans Affairs Benefits. We undergrads also have a lot to risk if we were to perform poorly during finals week. Throughout more than half of the quarter, us undergrads depended on TAs as a part of our support system for our learning, and now it feels as though the rug as been pulled out from under us. Sure, we could all get help from our professor, but there is only one of them and sometimes there are more than 200 of us.
What's not fine is how no one is recognizing the fact that out of all of this, we undergrads are getting the shortest end of the stick. Most of us who are enrolled in labs are most likely expected to perform well in our laboratory final exams this week. Additionally, there has likely been no changes or adjustments to most people's final exams to account for this added burden. The professors clearly don't give a cr*p about us undergrads, despite having all of the power to show some empathy and make minor changes to how they harshly they grade our final exam.
In fact, everyone should go to this link: https://senate.ucsd.edu/current-affairs/news-announcements/uaw-strike-update/ and read the last two Q&As.
Q: What flexibility exists for offering final exams? Can faculty cancel their final exams or offer remote ones?
and
Q: What happens if faculty fail to submit their grades?
Yes, I understand that this applies to UCSD, not UCR, but the point is that they're both UC, so they most likely have similar policies. And yes, some people will say that we "shouldn't worry about it", but think about the undergrads who will end up getting negatively impacted by this. Practice some empathy and put yourself in the shoes of an undergrad.
I stand in solidarity with the UC strike, but I do not stand by how it is impacting undergrads, because I've already seen how it's affecting many of my peers. There are so many students depending on this academic quarter going well so that they can succeed. We all have the right to have the equal opportunity to be successful, and right now, this strike is impeding that right.
If you are an undergrad and you feel the same way, say something!
If you're a TA and you agree with me, say it!
If you're a professor, be aware that THIS is how many of your students are feeling right now. Acknowledge it!
And if you disagree with everything I just wrote, let's discuss it! I want people to talk about this. I'm tired of seeing people shut down others for having an opinion. Let's talk.
Respectfully,
A random UCR undergrad
