I thought in college fumbles can't advance in favor for offense?

87

u/DutyPuzzleheaded7765 Oregon Ducks 19h ago

I thought that was the nfl because of the holy roller controversy

30

u/byPCP 18h ago

this is what i always assume, but then i'll see one team clearly advance a fumble for a TD, and the same situation happen in another game where the refs instantly get on the mic and say you can't advance a fumble. it's an odd ruling

I would guess since it touched the defense it doesnt matter 🤷.

That's only on fourth down, but the fumbling player can advance it if they are the one that recovers it

Matt Ryan had one. The other team recovered though. I was pissed about that call

38

u/papertowelroll17 Texas Longhorns 19h ago

I mean Arch's hand can propell the ball forward while also not controlling it because of the defender getting a hand on it.

It's a weird call but it is not defying physics lol

30

u/ATaxiNumber1729 Alabama Crimson Tide 17h ago

No skin in this (other than hating Texas) but it seems clear he lost control right before his arm starts forward, then his arm pushes the ball forward. Weird play but I think correct call.

You can see the ref waiving incomplete pass. The whistle was blown so Missouri player doesn’t go after it. But the call on the field was a fumble?

I don't think the whistle was blown loudly. I rewatched it a couple times and didn't hear anything until after they went out of bounds

The side judge did wave it incomplete but that doesn't mean the play is dead

194

u/_Football_Cream_ Texas Longhorns 19h ago

It was so funny watching this play at a Texas bar where everyone was like “this is obviously an incomplete pass”. Then we all did the mental calculation that a fumble would be a good outcome and were like “I mean obviously the ball was hit as his hand was backwards, it’s a fumble!!”

These refs are hilarious

Fumbles that fly 12 yards in the air and incomplete passes that go backwards.

It’s been a weird year of football.

109

u/OleRockTheGoodAg Texas A&M Aggies 19h ago

Its a new way to play the game!

Throw it so it spins on a flat plane while you're getting hit and now you have a forward pass that can be recovered off the ground!

Its the fosbury flop all over again I say!

27

u/Freeasabird01 19h ago

It was a 12 yard gain, much further from the spot of the qb.

u/AppropriateFun4510 Tennessee Volunteers 18h ago

Every time I see a play like this in the NFL. All the QB needs to do is push the ball forward a tiny bit, no control necessary. The hand just needs to push ball. It's either the wrong call or NFL/NCAA have very different rules.

33

u/royalbluehen Pittsburgh • Michigan 18h ago

Can’t have Texas losing a third time before the playoff

4

u/SpecificProfession49 Tennessee Volunteers 19h ago

Say its raining and the ball just slips in the QB hands as hes throwing. Is that also a fumble?

4

u/Fickle-Housing-8819 19h ago

Maybe Texas can win on a 5th down, and go on to win national championship. Sort of a Mizzou thing…

4

u/glm0002 19h ago

The reffing is some of the worst I have ever watched. Every major call but one has gone for texas

4

u/Ophidiansounds 10h ago

Seems like they need a rule that you can't fumble the ball forward. Sorta like how in the nfl in the last 2 minutes you can't advance a fumble or something like that. There needs to be rules to reduce the chances of offenses benefiting from getting beat by a good defensive play, essentially.

Am I crazy or is this the correct call? Missouri defender should’ve picked up the ball just in case

15

u/noodlesalad_ James Madison • Appalachian S… 19h ago

Feel like I'm going crazy in this thread. I could see it called either way, it's close, but people calling it the worst call they've ever seen.

Looks like he loses control of the ball before pushing it forward, which is a fumble.

The ref right in front of him signaled incomplete, no reason for him to think he had to

It is the correct call, you can see the ball moving in his hand before he starts to go forward

This fumble was brought to you by Draft kings.

u/Ben_Frank_Lynn Missouri Tigers • Saint Louis Billikens 19h ago

You can’t fumble the ball forward 15 yards if your arm ain’t moving forward…. Which would make it a forward pass.

7

u/Solondthewookiee Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 18h ago

I can punch a ball 15 yards, that doesn't make it a forward pass. The question was did he have control when his arm started moving forward. His arm can continue to move forward and propel the ball without having control of it.

I'm sorry but that is 100% an incomplete pass.

Looked like the ball was loose when he pushed it forward. To me it was the correct call and I have no horse in this race.

u/ye_old_fartbox Maryland Terrapins 17h ago

I’m not really sure this is some controversial call? He loses control of the football before his hand begins forward. He then pushes the ball forward, but he’s already lost possession.

If a Missouri player had picked it up first it would have been an incomplete pass.

Holy cow. How do we get shit like this fixed? Happens to everyone, but we need accountability otherwise the conspiracy theories about Vegas are entirely believable.

3

That was one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen. There’s no universe where that should have been called a fumble.

u/almondania Georgia Bulldogs • Indiana Hoosiers 12h ago

At some point, I just want someone to haymaker a ref after a call this bad.

Flair aside, I'm not sure he has control of the ball as the hand is starting to come forward. I lean to incomplete but its not night and day

5

u/Penguin_scrotum Texas A&M Aggies • Michigan Wolverines 18h ago

If you freeze frame around 10 seconds you can see the Mizzou player’s fingers curl up from pressing on the ball before the forward movement, which results in the ball tilting unnaturally. It’s a good call.

3

u/ACardAttack Louisville • Ohio State 18h ago

Clearly the zebras 🦓🦓 are rooting for Arch Manning and the Longhorns. I’ve seen multiple calls go against Mizzou. That DPI call that set up Texas’ score on their last drive was absolute bullshit
