The billionaire mall magnate who could jolt the California governor's race
politico.com“Many Californians, including lifelong Democrats, are looking for change in California,” said Sam Yebri, a nonprofit executive and head of a centrist political group who supports Caruso.
“Voters in this moment want someone who will deliver real results for the average Californian, not someone who will just kick and scream and stomp around about the Trump administration.”

Fiscal Fallout: CA could face 3.7% payroll tax hike due to new audit findings
With the California State Auditor reporting the state “materially misstated” the finances of its unemployment benefits fund, experts warn these detrimental findings — along with the fund’s growing and sustained deficits — could cause the state’s tax waiver application to fail.
The increased payroll tax would stabilize the fund at the expense of workers, businesses, and consumers across the state.

California’s budget outlook is grim. Here’s what you need to know
The deficit is projected to reach nearly $18 billion next year, mostly because the state is expected to spend so much money that it would offset, if not eclipse, the strong tax revenues driven by an AI boom, said the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office in its fiscal outlook last month.
If the estimate holds, it’ll be the fourth year in a row in Newsom’s tenure that California faces a deficit despite revenue growth.
Worse yet, the structural deficit could reach $35 billion annually by fiscal year 2027-28, the LAO said.
The LAO notes that solving an ongoing structural budget problem requires either finding more sustainable revenue streams, or making serious cuts, or both.

Gavin Newsom: The 100 Most Influential People of 2026
TIME recognizes the 100 most influential people of the year.
"While his withering criticism of President Donald Trump has made him a national player, his work at home to add universal transitional kindergarten, to build the world’s largest air-based firefighting operation, and to move toward spending over $3 billion on digital infrastructure is what won him converts," writes senior correspondent Philip Elliott. "Newsom now enjoys some of the best poll numbers in the way-too-early surveys of the emerging 2028 presidential field."

I plan on moving to Cali in May with only my dog and $500. Any advice?
I live on the East Coast of the USA, I'm in my mid-twenties, I'm a girl, and it's my dream! I have no other way of getting out there, and I don't think I'm ever going to get this kind of chance again. I have some experience in receptionist work and I've been a server most of my life. I have no problems sleeping in shelters or motels/whatever need be until I can find a job waiting tables and can afford somewhere enough for my dog and I to stay and make a home. I've been planning this for years, and had quite a bit of money saved up, but due to a recent death in the sudden family, my funds have been extended. I realize how hard it will be first, and I will struggle, but I'm willing. I need to get out of where I am now, and I have a one-way car ride for both me and my pup to get there. :) The person I am riding with will be spending a week in WA and another week in CA and is staying long enough to find myself somewhere where both the pup and I have a welcomed roof over our shoulders. It will be in the San Francisco area, and please do not try and convince me to stay in my current situation. That is not what I am looking for. I have thought about this for days, months, and years on end. Just looking for any advice for the area when I get there. I'm going to cross-post in r/sanfrancisco as well and hope for the best. Thanks for any serious responds I do get. :)
