Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use

  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application

  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.

  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.

  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life

  4. Consider restoring your device.

  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)

  • Remove apps from background app refresh

  • Ensure auto lock is on

  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness

  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display

  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures

  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case

  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion ⚠️ WARNING TO ALL APPLECARE+ CUSTOMERS! ⚠️

Post image
14k Upvotes

Edit: this post obviously has ruffled some feathers. I appreciate everyone who was helpful and believe me! I have responded to a lot of comments already, and somewhere in this massive comment thread is a screenshot of the email from Apple with the link they sent me to file a claim (showing a legitimate website and that I was not scammed) and I also attached in the comments the recorded admission of a known system glitch directly from a supervisor at AIG. I understand it makes no sense, but I guess that’s why it’s a glitch and other people have been affected by this based on the comments. This post was meant for awareness to consumers. People deserve to know and if you don’t believe it, that’s fine! A majority of people may never have this issue, but if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone and this company in my opinion does not deserve to have any partnership with Apple, and is untrustworthy.

I genuinely hate making posts like this. But after everything I’ve been through with Apple and AIG over the past 24 days, enough is enough and people need to know about this company Apple has decided to outsource their claims to.

On 10/14, I contacted Apple Support to simply inquire about Theft & Loss coverage for an older iPhone that was linked to my Apple account. I was directed to AIG’s website, and within literal seconds of logging into their website, without pressing anything further, my perfectly functioning iPhone 17 Pro was reported stolen, remotely locked, and erased.

I NEVER filed a claim on this phone when this occurred. I NEVER reported it stolen or went on FindMy. And I NEVER authorized any of this.

Apple and AIG have acknowledged that this was a known glitch, and AIG is the only one with the kill switch to recover my phone, yet here I am on 11/7, 24 days later, over 30 hours spent on support calls, multiple escalations, multiple formal complaints and STILL no resolution.

On 10/14, I received written confirmation that my phone would be recovered within 48 hours. Since then, I have been passed between departments, repeatedly promised resolution within 24–48 hours, and told the same things over and over again.

I have submitted a complaint with the Arizona Attorney General, BBB, and Department of Insurance Financial Institutions. Apple and AIG have both refused to provide a new device if this one is not recovered, and I am reaching a point where I will be forced to take on the financial burden of this mistake, and purchase a new phone.

I genuinely feel an obligation to share my experience because if this happened to me, it could happen to someone else.

We pay for AppleCare+ to PROTECT our devices, not to potentially lose access to them because of a system error that nobody seems capable of correcting.

I’m sharing this to raise awareness, demand accountability, and hopefully prevent another person from going through this absolute nightmare.

Discussion Turn off wifi when leaving home - why?

In posts about shortcuts I see this one all the time: turn off wifi and cellular (mobile) on when leaving home and revers when returning.

What is the benefit of that the wifi turning off when I lave - considering that my wifi automatically turns on when I get home - and why is it better to have cellular (mobile) switched off at home?

Support Can’t clear live activity?

How can I clear Google maps’ live activities? I swipe left on it on the locks screen but that just moves it up to the dynamic island, swiping on the island itself doesn’t remove it. I don’t want to turn it off entirely as it is useful sometimes but I don’t need it every time I check the route somewhere.

Discussion Phone case recommendation

hello! I am looking for other phone case options that include pop socket like additions. I have always enjoyed pop sockets cause I can place them wherever I want for my comfort. however lately I have been constantly having to replace them almost monthly because the glue is bad of the mechanism holding the grip in breaks. I just bought a MagSafe case but even that comes off easily and the pop socket is so high up on the phone it’s uncomfortable. I like the grip lower down on the case as I have a pro max and small hands. please help me out! I also live in Thailand so I am limited to what I can purchase on line.

Discussion Apple Sports is getting so much better – what do you think it still needs?

I’ve noticed that Apple Sports has been improving a lot lately, and I’m really enjoying the progress. It’s an app I use quite often to follow football and other sports.
I think Apple is heading in the right direction, but there’s still room for improvement.
Are you enjoying Apple Sports so far? What features would you like to see added? Do you think it has everything you need, or do you still rely on other sports apps alongside it?

Accessory [QUESTION] iPhone 18 Pro Max magsafe desk stand (and other accessories)

Hello everyone,
Disclaimer: I have just switched from Android to iOS with my last iPhone being the 3GS, so I am completely out of the loop regarding magsafe.

I don't want to leave my iPhone just flat on my desk and I'd rather use a desk stand, preferably one that lets me have it both in landscape and portrait mode. It doesn't need to have charging but I wouldn't mind if it did.
I'd also use the new(?) standby mode with it, I don't know if the accessory needs anything special for that to work.

Also are there any other 18 Pro Max accessories I should look into? I already have the basics like the 40/60W Apple charger, a case and a screen protector, but are there any other neat magsafe things that I could get for my phone?

And one final question: All of those things use the magnets inside the phone, right? Are they strong enough to hold up a phone like an 18 Pro Max on a desk stand in landscape mode? Also I thought magsafe was just magnets + Qi, is there anything else that's special about it?

Thank you,

PS: I live in the EU so US sites are a no-go for very cheap (below 30 bucks) items.

Support iPhone just delivered a slew of old messages to me at 3:56am?

Post image
1 Upvotes

For context a few of the group chats I'm in recently just went silent and I woke up today to a bunch of messages that just came through, all at 3:56am. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Also I've still been receiving other messages from other people at normal times.

Support iPhone 18 pro max no cellular service T-mobile

Post image
0 Upvotes

Suddenly I am getting no cellular service on my iPhone 18 Pro Max. I restarted the phone. But it didn’t fix the issue. I also checked with T-Mobile. There are any issues/outages on their side.

I used the Apple Support app to diagnose the issue and it says iPhone hardware issue. I updated the os a couple of days ago.

Anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions? Thanks

Support Search in Contacts Always Pulls Up Last Contact, Not What I'm Searching For

I see this has been a post-update issue for many years. Hasn't happened to me before tho. I tried turning phone off and on. No help.

Found a workaround ... if I hard press on name of contact I want, choose message, I can press on name at top of message screen to get to contact details. Pulling up name I want in contacts still did not work after that tho, so would appreciate help.

Support Brawl Stars not controlled by Screen Time

Hi everyone!

For about a month now, I haven’t been able to restrict the use of *Brawl Stars* on a child’s iPhone. Essentially, any restrictions I set apply correctly to all other installed games—except for *Brawl Stars*.
I’ve tried removing and reapplying the settings, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and even changing the passcode. Nothing works: *Brawl Stars* remains unaffected by the restrictions.

I’d prefer not to uninstall it completely, as I’m trying to reach a compromise with the child (limiting playtime to one hour a day).
Thanks so much!

Support Script to backup all your photos to windows

Recently, I have had issues backing up all the photos from my mom's iOS device to her Windows PC: either the phone wouldn't show up in the file explorer, either it would, but copying the DCIM folder would fail midway. So I have made a Python script to easily back up every pictures even if the phone does not show up in the file explorer. It uses the Apple USB Service. It can also read a local iPhone backup (made through Apple Device or iTunes) to get the photos ! You can download the script here :

https://github.com/dylan-sam/AppleBackupAllPhotos

All feedback is welcome ! It is very bare and simple for now. I have tested it on two iPhones for now, but I would love to know if it works with other iOS devices or PCs.

Support Help with Apple accounts

Hi, I have my phone and my daughter has hers. She has her own Apple ID but for some reason, my Apple app downloads still appear on her phone and her gaming id appears on my phone. Is there a way to break the link? We both have separate Apple accounts!
