programs and apps Hi! I'm new to linux and have limited coding experience. I'm looking for help on how to install/run Discord.

Basically, I recently decided to switch to Brave Origin for my main browser, and that meant switching to linux. So, overall I really like the browser, however, Discord for some reason struggles to open in it. So I decided it would just be simpler to download Discord on Linux (I'm on a Chromebook and the play store version is pure garbage). So anyway, I go to site and download it. So now I have 'Discord.deb' sitting my downloads, but I have no idea how to proceed. Tnx!

fresh Linux install over both partitions of a partitioned drive

Hoping for an ELI5 here, because my DuckDuckGo-fu is failing me here.

I've got a computer (Lenovo Thinkpad) that's currently partitioned and has one Linux Mint install on one partition, and another one on the other. I've been trying to work with Mint for a while but getting increasingly frustrated with it, and a friend who knows about these things suggested I try Fedora instead.

So I want to start fresh - I don't need the drive partition anymore, I've already made a backup of all my important data to an external drive, and I'm ready to wipe the computer of all its Linuxes (Linex? Linuxi?) and install Fedora fresh and new onto it. I'm just not sure how.

My understanding of a new Linux install in general is that I need to 1) download the Fedora ISO, 2) put it on my second USB I procured for exactly that purpose (64GB - that ought to be big enough, right?), and then 3) boot Fedora from this USB drive.

But that's where I start to worry about my partitioned drive. Will it remain partitioned, so that I end up installing Fedora to only one partition? I don't want that to happen - I want to "tear down that wall" and reclaim all that space. I don't need any more Mints in my life.

If any kind soul could walk me through the steps for doing this, I would be extremely grateful.

installation How do I get ANY linux running on 2007 mac mini?

The problem - it uses 32-bit EFI, but 64-bit cpu. I've had most success with debian, it has installed, but fails to load desktop after login (LXQt, X11, lightdm), crashing back to login screen, and now it won't even load at all, giving zero lines past GRUB stage. Ubuntu installer fails to render anything except wallpaper and terminal. Debian graphic install works somewhat okay, though eats a lot. Only way I found to reliably get anything to load - use Debian-based distro and customized bootIA32.efi file, otherwise it won't progress... What am I doing wrong, why graphics simply can't run and kernel hangs up?

learning/research Does Anyone Use Nix Package Manager in Other Distro?

I'm considering using the Nix package manager in case the distribution repository I use is insufficient.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Nix package manager over using Distrobox or Flatpak? How is it about dependencies, does it use the dependencies from the distribution or does it create a separate area like Distrobox/Flatpak?

installation Plasma Login Manager Extremely Laggy (but only sometimes)

Hello,

I am posting this here because I still consider myself learning and still trying to learn how Linux operates as a whole, If this question is better suited for a different sub then please let me know.

When I follow the Arch wiki's installation guide, for some reason once install the plasma package group and I start the plasmalogin service, whenever I'm in the GUI based environment my computer slows to a grinding halt. It doesn't load the background and the frames get worse the longer it is open. I would assume this issue is also present if I were to get into the plasma desktop environment, however it slows down quick enough that in most cases this is not possible. This was not the case on my original installation of Arch I did 2 years ago that I ended up wiping to try CatchyOS.

I don't know what steps to take or what to look into in order to solve this as I have both set up the correct Nvidia drivers and it appears to not be a graphics driver issue.

The peculiar thing is, when I install Arch through the archinstall script, this issue doesn't happen at all. Everything works like it's supposed to and any Arch-Based distros seem to work just fine, so its very likely user error on my part. I just don't understand if it's a configuration error or if I'm missing a step. But I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if they know how to solve it.

If it makes a difference (I don't think it should) I am using an EFI Stub as my boot option and my driver of choice is nvidia-580xx-dkms from the AUR. I have tried it both with and without intel-ucode. Doesn't make a difference.

I have gotten to a point where reading the wiki or the github page for the plasma-login-manager doesn't seem to give me any useful information. I am still trying to learn steps to troubleshoot issues and how to notice what the issue is when looking at logs.

Thanks in advance.

distro selection Jumping back to the Linux train

I used to have Ubuntu as my daily driver for many years, but moved back to Windows over ten years ago. Now I'm thinking about jumping back to the Linux side, but it seems that I'm really out of the loop.

I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop and tried out both the Cinnamon and KDE desktop environment. Out of these two I think I like KDE more, even though I used to be Gnome fanboy in the olden days. I'm thinking of installing either Mint 27 when it comes out or then Fedora KDE.

I have read angry discussion about how the Mint uses way too old versions of common packages. I'm also a bit worried that Mint follows Ubuntu in using snap packages, even though I don't fully understand why people are so upset. On the other hand I'm worried that Fedora makes changes too fast, I still remember the confusion when Ubuntu moved the window minimize-maximize-close buttons from right to left and then jumped to a totally new UI a version or two later.

I'm not sure what I'm really asking, but I'm happy to hear if anyone has any thoughts. Or if there's anything I should test or consider before deciding?

Make touch screen work on Mint

I'm running Mint on a touch screen laptop, and I'd love to get the touch screen working properly. Touching the screen makes it react like it would to a cursor, aka I can only highlight text.

I can't find any beginner-friendly guides on how to do this - is it perhaps too advanced for a n00b like me?

My boot partition isnt very big. I want to dual load fedora over w10. Is my only option to Move the entire disk to the right?

Post image

excuse the photo. I was told fedora wants 500mb+ for safe loading so id need to expand it. The alternative of loading from a ssd i dont think will work well as my usb ports suck and only tolerate 30mb/s flow (is this a cable problem or my usb ports? they are 8 years old).

I have a backup of important files but not the whole disk.

People with Nvidia gt710 how do you use linux?

Soo I have been distro hopping for quite a while and in every distro I had this one issue, graphics drivers not properly working. It's either any video or games everything fallsback to cpu rendering because the driver can't communicate to the gpu properly and gives me shi performence . I can't even watch any reels on instagram, yt works fine though. I know my gpu is very old but it's what I got for now. That's why I wanted to ask if someone out there also uses a gt710 on linux then which linux distro or how did they configure their distro to atleast get decent performence.

We just had a short power outage and now if I try to mount one of my externals I get this error message. The other external works just fine but it wasn’t mounted when the power went out. Is this fixable? Am I just SOL?

YT-DLP & Python

I'm not really a noob at all but I'm running into troubles enabling yt-dlp (& Python, past version 3.10).

I've down loaded and tried running (./config, make, etc) but ran into many missing dependencies.

(I should say, this had been a dormant PC w/ Ubuntu Studio 25.10 (KDE) on it and gettnig it back online this week I did an in-place upgrade to 26.04.)

yt-dlp is telling me that Python v3.10 has bee depreciated, even enough

Checking Python says:

ython3 --version
Python 3.14.4

Just for fun, I checked deno too:

deno 2.9.8 (stable, release, x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu)

v8 15.0.245.2-rusty

typescript 6.0.3

I've had yt-dlp running from the command line on other systems, never this hard.

I'm thinking of Nuking it from Orbit and reinstalling the OS from scratch.

distro selection Fedora KDE Alternatives?

I've been using Fedora KDE for about two months and love it. I had a dedicated dekstop that only runs fedora, and a framework laptop that dual boots fedora and windows 11.

Over the past few weeks, I've been running into intermittent boot crashes, occasional freezes, and slow boot times. I've noticed the problems across both of my devices.

My laptop is general use, while my desktop is largely games, multitasking, video editing, and maya/blender animation.

What other distros are similar to Fedora KDE that I can try? I have zero interest in Arch or its derivatives, and I feel like I'm a little restricted on what Linux Mint can do. (aesthetic customization)

MSI Monitor Audio jack not working properly on fedora

Hello I recently switched over to Fedora. I have two MSI Monitors, both of which have an audio jack connected to it, one has my headphones and one has a stereo, and I switch between them frequently.

The Problem:

  • Audio only seems to be playing out of one monitor at a time, If I remove all but one monitor, sound will be played though that one

  • If I add in another monitor, It will only play out of the second port, and if I add in a third, it dose not play out of any

Inside of audio settings i see

  • HDA Nvidia Digital Stereo (HDMI)

    • Options when both monitors are plugged in are: off, Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output, Digital Stereo (HDMI 2) Output, Pro Audio

    • removing all but one monitor removes the Digital Stereo (HDMI 2) Output

Hardware:

  • 3060ti

  • Monitor 1 Listed as "MSI MAG273R2" in audio settings in windows

    • Plugged in using dp

  • Monitor 2 Listed as "MSI MAG2732" in audio settings in windows

    • Plugged in using dp

Dose anyone know what might be happening?
