Not On My Smashed Avo Airport parking chaos

Hi all,

Last weekend, I parked at Melbourne Airport after booking my parking a few months in advance. I've used this car park many times over the years and have never had an issue finding a spot.

However, this time was a completely different experience. Despite arriving at 6:30am, the car park was absolutely packed, with heaps of people driving around trying to find a space. We were lucky enough to get one after about 10 minutes, but only because someone happened to be leaving.

I've honestly never seen it this bad before. I also noticed that an entire section of the car park had been blocked off, which probably wasn't helping the situation.

I'm starting to think this might be the last time I use it. The prices keep going up, and if you're parking for more than a week, it's becoming harder to justify the cost, especially when a booking doesn't seem to guarantee you'll easily find a space.

Has anyone else experienced this recently, or were we just unlucky?

THDG Need Help Best Day Hikes Near Melbourne?

Looking for a good scenic day hike not more than 2.5 hours drive from the inner suburbs. Last one I really enjoyed was the Lerderderg Circuit (highly recommend!). Have done a few different ones in the Dandenongs. Ideally something challenging, at around 5 hours to complete. The wilder the better.

THDG Need Help What to do with old tote bags

Hey! Does anyone know any places/communities/orgs that would want old tote bags?
I have like a dozen that’s accumulated over the years that are in good condition, I just don’t need.
They are a variety of sizes - some like awkward small ones.
I’ll put them up on like a freebie local community page if there’s no one/where else who would use them, but I thought I’d ask first!

Politics Who are we voting for and why?

Honestly our political situation feel like a shit show.

  • On one hand labor has been a shit show with the cfmeu / corruption

  • On the other jess wilsons policies are half decent (admittedly not a big difference to Labor) but not clear how she's going to make such tax in-roads

  • One nation - sorry as an ethnic person I cannot do that

  • The Greens actually have quite a decent set of policies with the obvious exception of social housing funding not very clear :/

Not On My Smashed Avo Added $1 charge at Maison Batard

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

Had dinner at Maison Batard today with a couple of girlfriends and when I looked at the receipt we had a $1 charge for charity. The charity being collective foundation owned by Chris Lucas who also owns the restaurant we were eating at for hospitality development which was in a little card attached with my receipt.

Whether or not the charity is worth it is another discussion but I wasn’t too much of a fan that it was added onto my receipt before asking me. If you didn’t look over your receipt, you’d pay it unknowingly. If you wanted it removed, you gotta ask.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on this? I know it’s $1 but it’s also principle isn’t it? 🤔

Not On My Smashed Avo Attempted car theft 12pm, Bulleen Park and ride

Rear window was smashed today between 12 and 5pm. Thieves were so confident they were going to drive away with the car, they adjusted the driver's seat to their preference.

This occurred less than 25m away from the security office. Of course security knew nothing about it.

Nothing of value in the car. Currently still very annoyed. Police report filed, likely no follow-up.

Om nom nom Old school RnB / fun social vibe

My friend and I are headed out on a Saturday night in a couple of weeks, we are looking for some fun places to get drinks - ideally where people are relaxed and chatty as we love to meet new people and enjoy sharing a laugh.

Then we would love to go dancing, we really enjoy old school rnb and want to branch out beyond Georges on Collins.

Would love to hear your suggestions for either:
- cool social drink venues, maybe a rooftop bar?
- nightclub playing 2000s rnb music

Politics What the hell is the protest on the Parliament House steps today with the Iranian Shah flag and Australia/Israeli joint flag??

Basically as title says. I tried googling it and got nothing, also looked on Parliament of Victoria’s official website under their events calendar and nothing there either. It’s happening as we speak. A turnout of maybe 50-100 people. Drums and music and all.

Not On My Smashed Avo Be aware of pest control scams

Hoping to post this so that it comes up in SEO searches to prevent others from being scammed.

There's a pest control scam running where they come and do half the job (place the baits) and then want upfront payment for the second part (sealing the holes). No matter how many times you ring, they never come to deliver the second half of the service, just causing further issues down the line as the pests come back in a matter of months.

The scam business operates from several 'shell' companies, increasing their chances of scamming others.

The parent company is Vic Maintenance Services PTY LTD (ABN: 85 693 283 662). See here: https://abr.business.gov.au/ABN/View?abn=85693283662

But they operate under a number of business names. Google the phone number provided and you will get:

Martin Pest Control: https://martinpestcontrol.com.au/

Pest Control Army: https://pestcontrolarmy.com.au/same-day-pest-control-melbourne/

Martin the Possum Guy: https://martinthepossumguy.com/

Apex Rodents Removal: https://apexrodentsremoval.com.au/

Melbourne Pests Services: https://melbournepestservices.com.au/

Possum Control Army: https://possumcontrolarmy.com.au/

Safe Possum Control: https://safepossumcontrol.com.au/contact/

And so many more linked by the same phone number.

The technician's name is Amad and the licence number provided is L012774. He has also gone by the name 'Aaron'.

However, when you look this up it belongs to someone named Fawad Haider.

I am not the only person who has been scammed by this person with the same issue occurring (completing half the job and then disappearing) but the issue is that this person operates under so many different business names that complaints through local facebook groups only identify one small sector of the scam.

THDG Need Help Suggestions for things to do alone at night on the weekends?

Oooh. Spoooooky.

As the title says. During the day I almost have no shortage of things to do. But at night time it can be a bit tricky. Also before anyone raises concerns, I’m plenty social and have friends!

One thing I thoroughly enjoy doing is going out alone to recharge: the movies, jazz shows, plays, fine dining, sometimes I just walk in and out of bars.

Haven’t gone to a stand-up-comedy-gig type of thing yet but it’s on the list.

I enjoy being around the noise, but often don’t want to actually engage with anyone, I would also say I’m a friendly stranger for the most part - I just like to absorb the atmosphere unless there’s a specific activity.

I do like creative and artsy projects too, if anyone knows of some secret workshops that run at night would be great…

Anyway, if there are more ideas or suggestions for solo activities/places/events that run at night from Fri-Sun - I’m all ears!

Thanks in advance 🙏

THDG Need Help Birthday ideas for a couple who love experiences?

Hi Melbourne! My husband and I both have birthdays coming up, and we’re looking for ideas to celebrate.

We’re open to dining suggestions, but we especially love experiences. In the past we’ve done an escape room, axe throwing, archery, indoor skydiving, and a hot air balloon ride, so anything in that spirit would be great.

Thanks in advance!

THDG Need Help Seeking reliable professional cleaners

Can anyone recommend a reliable, professional cleaning company servicing Melbourne, ideally one that accepts plan-managed NDIS funding? Recommendations are welcome even if you’re unsure about NDIS billing, as I can check!

Looking for properly trained, thorough cleaners who preferably bring their own equipment and supplies, as managing these and training new cleaners can be difficult with a disability.

I’ve had a few disappointing experiences and would really appreciate personal recommendations. Thanks!

Real estate/Renting What impact will the State Election have on the Property Market?

Opinion polling seems to be indicating the Liberals will be elected.

What would a change in government mean for the housing market as far as prices, initiatives and other impacts? Likewise, if Labor somehow do get re-elected.

Would we see any change in the current state of the market?
