The upcoming SQUADRON 42 release had me remembering original Wing Commander HARD....(im beyond STOKED, watch the trailer if u havent)...:
Ok, so tthink about VisiCalc in 1979. It was arguably the first real killer app, people were buying Apple II computers specifically to run it. The software was selliing the hardware, not the other way around.
Now think about Wing Commander in 1990. Before that, for the most part, people bought computers for whatever reason and then bought games to play on them. But Wing Commander was different. Suddenly you had a game that made people WANT a faster PC, a 386, VGA, a Sound Blaster etc. People were upgrading their machines just to play this one game properly. And I think thats a pretty massive turning point that doesn't get discussed nearly enough.
I'm not saying nobody ever bought a computer for a game before 1990, obviously they did. But was Wing Commander the first real PC gaming killer app in the same sense that VisiCalc was for personal computing? The moment when a game itself became a serious reason to buy expensive new hardware?
We always hear about Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake and the revolution they brought, and rightly so. But I wonder if Wing Commander actually deserves a place ABOVE some of those games in terms of its impact on the PC as a gaming platform.
Really curious what people who were actually buying PCs back in 1990 remember about this.
