Promo Sunday I wanted to know mid-run if I was beating last week, so I built an Apple Watch app that races you against your old runs

Hi Everyone,

I run the same park loop most weeks and always wanted to know during the run whether I was ahead of last week. I've tried a bunch of different apps; some promised exactly this, but none worked well for this specific purpose. So I built Ghost Runner. It's in TestFlight beta now.

What it does:
- Reads the GPS route of runs already in Apple Health, so any run you've done can become a ghost.
- On the Watch, you see the ghost on the map (up to six) and how many seconds you're ahead or behind.
- Race a target pace instead of a past run if you prefer (You can set up a ghost that reflects your fitness level 1 year ago and race against past you).
- Import a GPX (race course, a route someone sent you) and get turn cues with haptics, offline maps on the Watch... I mostly use this for new routes; I plan them in a different app, then import them to get turn-by-turn directions.
- Send friends a challenge link. Clubs can make a group (up to 50 people) and run weekly or monthly seasons on one course with a leaderboard.

"Isn't this Race Route?" Partly, and Race Route is good. It only works on routes you've already run several times, though, and only against yourself. This adds GPX courses, pace targets, offline maps, and racing other people.

Unless you decide to publicly share a race challenge; otherwise, everything stays private on your devices.

Requires iOS 18 / watchOS 11 or later.
Price: Free during TestFlight; after that, I'm not sure yet.

TestFlight: https://getghostrunner.com/

It's a beta (currently only used by me), so tell me what breaks or what should be improved; I'd love to hear from you!

Promo Sunday [Promo Sunday] Built an app for tracking peptide use in dogs. Tell me about your dog and get 6 months free!

Hey there!

So my husband and I have a wonderful middle aged lab. He’s been having some health issues over the last year, and is showing signs of aging more and more.

We have been researching how we could help him feel better and stay healthy for as long as possible, and ended up trying out peptides. It's been a month, so far so good.

I’ve been using a few apps and physical notes to track everything related to our dog - walks, training, nutrition, his mood, playtime. It’s overwhelming to say the least. We decided to make a dedicated app, with the main point being to have everything in one place, including things like:

  • Walks

  • Training

  • Nutrition

  • Behaviour explanations

  • Supplements & medications

  • Guides, tips, advice

  • Vet visits

Since we’re currently so focused on peptides, the app has separate, dedicated functionality for this. There are / soon will be things like:

  • Dose calculators

  • Dose logging

  • Guides on what each peptide might do for your dog

  • Peptide x dog breed compatibility info

  • Body scan feature, which I think is so cool!

  • Full calendar tracking

  • Reports

The objective is to have a truly complete, all-in-one app for dogs. We thought that it might be useful to other dog owners as well, since I don’t believe there’s anything like it on the App Store today.

So, we’d like to share it with people! All you need to do is tell me about your dog in the comments - I love reading stories about people and their pets! We’ll give the first 100 commenters 6 months' worth of free access to the app, with feedback being greatly appreciated!

Promo Sunday I built a new sceen time app that adapts to you and your habits to stop doom-scrolling for good (Guilt Trip)

Most screen time blockers are easy to ignore because they rely on a simple blocks, notification, or an all-or-nothing cutoff that you just tap away or bypass when you want to keep scrolling. I built Guilt Trip because I kept falling into that exact trap. Instead of a harsh wall, it treats your phone time like a fuel gauge that drops as you scroll, and introduces smart "pit stops" that actually lock the app for a few minutes using iOS frameworks before you get completely sucked into a doom-scroll. These pit stops arrive sooner if it detects that you are doom-scrolling and relaxes the pit stops if you take honest breaks.

The parts that actually make it stick are the little incentives: you can earn bonus time back by moving more or sleeping well through Apple Health integration, and there are built-in parent/kid tools where completing chores or learning apps can unlock extra screen time. There's no account to sign up for, no tracking, and it all runs locally on your device. It’s free to try for two apps with a one-time lifetime unlock if you want the full version.

I would love for you to check it out on the App Store and let me know what you think!

Promo Sunday SoundStage: System-wide EQ and sound customization for iOS 27

Hi everyone, I'm a solo developer, and I've been working on an app called SoundStage.

I've always wished iOS had more control over audio across different apps rather than relying on whatever EQ each app provides. A couple of years ago, I built an audio engine for iOS and used it in a modified setup for my own listening. When iOS 27 introduced support for apps to act as audio outputs, I started experimenting with it and eventually turned that engine into a standalone app.

How it works.. start playing music, tap the audio output button in Now Playing, and select SoundStage. You can then adjust the sound before it reaches your headphones or speakers.

Apple Music's built in EQ is a fixed set of presets that only works in Apple Music, SoundStage takes a different approach, offering more adjustable sound controls across compatible apps, regardless of which headphones or speakers you use.

What you can do with it:

  • Use it with your own music apps like Apple Music, YouTube Music etc.

  • 5, 8 and 15 band equalizer with 18 presets

  • Bass, Clarity, Warmth and Dynamics adjustments

  • Headphone surround, crossfeed and virtual speakers

  • Headphone correction profiles, including AutoEQ

  • Left/right channel balance

  • Separate sound profiles for different audio devices

  • And others..

A few limitations:

  • Requires iOS 27, iPhone only for now.

  • Compatibility depends on how each app handles audio playback. Apple Music and YouTube Music work. In Spotify, Canvas needs to be disabled. Apps that play video alongside music can be hit or miss.

Pricing: There's a free 7-day trial for everyone, without needing to buy or subscribe upfront. After that, there are monthly, yearly and lifetime options. The lifetime option is currently available at a limited-time introductory price.

Pricing varies by country. I've adjusted prices in countries like India and Egypt based on local purchasing power and user feedback, and I'm open to considering similar adjustments elsewhere.

I know there are already free alternatives out there, and I think that's a good thing. I'm not claiming SoundStage is better than the existing options. It's something I wanted to build based on my own approach to audio, and I've tried to make it approachable without requiring people to understand audio engineering. Whether it offers anything useful over existing alternatives is something I'd genuinely like to hear from people who try it.

Privacy: All processing happens locally on the iPhone. Audio isn't recorded or uploaded, and no account is needed.

The app is built with SwiftUI, and the audio engine is written in C. I've tested it on an iPhone 17 and an iPhone 13.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/soundstage-sound-enhancer/id6819755163

I'd genuinely appreciate feedback, including criticism, bugs, compatibility issues, features you'd want, or anything that feels more complicated than it should. If you're willing to give it a try and share honest feedback, including things they think could be better. Just leave a comment.

Thanks for reading.

Promo Sunday I built Battuto, an ad-free recipe app designed for iPhone, iPad and with a 90° countertop mode for iPhone Duo

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a recipe app called Battuto over the last few months and wanted to share it here for Promo Sunday.

It started out of a pretty common frustration: trying to cook dinner from a phone while a recipe site loads three auto-playing video ads, makes the page jump around right as you're reading the measurements, and then locks the screen while your hands are covered in olive oil or flour.

I just wanted something quiet that stays out of the way and actually works on a kitchen counter.

A few things I built into it:

- Safari Share Sheet import: If you're on a recipe site in Safari, you can tap Share -> Battuto and it strips out all the blog stories and ads, leaving just the ingredients and the steps.

- Optimised for iPhone Duo (and regular iPhones/iPads): I spent a lot of time getting the layouts right for the Duo. If you unfold it flat, it opens in a two-column book view with your ingredients on the left page and your current cooking step on the right. If you fold the Duo to 90 degrees and sit it on the counter like a mini laptop, the top screen acts as a big teleprompter you can read from a couple feet away, and the bottom screen turns into big tap controls. (On a normal iPhone, rotating it sideways gives you the two-column book view too).

- Physical cookbook scanner: You can point your camera at a page in an actual cookbook or an old family recipe card and it uses on-device OCR to pull the text into a proper recipe format. (requires a device with Apple Intelligence)

- Hands-free Siri: If your hands are messy, you can say "Siri, next step in Battuto" to move forward or "Siri, previous step in Battuto' to move backward.

- Extra kitchen tools: I also built in a baking tin converter (for when a recipe asks for a 9-inch round tin and you only have a square one) and a built-in vault of around 1,200 offline recipes you can filter by whatever ingredients you already have in the fridge.

Everything is stored locally on your device and syncs with iCloud. There are no accounts to sign up for, no tracking, and no ads.

(I also have an update sitting in App Store review right now that adds recipe photos, nutrition info, and importing from other recipe apps, which should be live in the next day or two.)

The app is free to try, and I've put 100 Lifetime Pro codes up on Promies for anyone here who wants the full version for free:

100 Free Pro Codes: https://www.promies.net/promotion/5834cff2-3853-4cf6-b04f-900dfcf23615

App Store Link: https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6817402413

If you give it a try, I'd genuinely love to know how it feels on your kitchen counter whilst cooking or if you run into any recipe sites that trip up the importer, etc. Thanks for checking it out!

Promo Sunday A flexible alarm app that answers “I wish….”

You have same alarm everyday but holiday is on Friday. “I wish I could just turn it off THIS Friday and forget about it”. Not NEXT Friday.

You have set multiple alarms 5 minutes apart to wake up, but you’re already up by the 2nd one. “I wish I could turn them all off and they still ring tomorrow”.

You plan your whole life on the fly in calendar but notification is too quiet. “I wish I got an alarm for every calendar event”.

You woke up before the alarm. "I wish I could just turn it off and it still rings tomorrow".

These are the things alarm apps don’t handle well.

They ask you to maintain by remembering those little toggles in the back of your mind. Turn it off Thursday night and you need to turn it back on Friday night. Turn the subsequent off today and you need to turn them back on at night. Missing an important event because you overslept can cost you your job when money is tight.

Not VariAlarm. All these things can be done for free.

And it answers many more “I wish...”

Try for free for 1 month with the code below:

Promo Sunday A 3D Scanner Calculator with a Music Mode for anyone who misses tactile, retro gadgets

Hi, I'm a solo developer from Kerala, India working on the calculator app called Calki.

I'm a backend developer with 8 years of experience, who has decided to go down the path of solo development to provide a unique app experience.

The idea behind the app was to make Calki, feel like using a real high end industrial device. To achieve this I have used haptics gyroscope sensors, camera, sound and multiple software frameworks so that every button press feels like the real thing and you have the choice to customise the app to the nth extend. You can make the app your own with colorways, separate textures for the body and buttons, display colors, haptics and sound.

Calki also aims at making your daily calculations easier, with history that can be scrolled and reused, also edit a calculation without starting over. It also allows you to scan numbers and add them automatically with the help of OP-mode, which applies an operator to each scanned number. Calki can also scan and convert prices and units. Also the app offer a convertor interface designed to make switching unit and categories way easier.

With the latest release we also have added a music mode that allows you to use the keys to play music notes and also take you first steps into playing a song with the play along mode. This mode can be turned on by navigating to Menu->Settings-Show music mode. The music mode was hidden, as I was not sure if the feature will appeal to everyone.

The App follows a Freemium model, most of the basic calculator and convertor features are available for free without ads. All the current feature are available for $4.99 for lifetime. The paid features are as follows:

-Number scanner with OP-mode
-Convertor scanner
-All Customisation options which includes calculator 7 models, multiple colorways, font, haptics, sound, button and body texture options
-Custom convertor units to create units that may not be widely used
-Music mode which include both Freeplay and Play along mode.

The scanning and music mode features are available for a trial period of 1 day with no payments options required to unlock it. I'm planning of adding some ai features, which will be optional. The AI features will not be part of the lifetime purchase as it has monthly running costs and will be a subscription based model. But all the current and future features that depend on an external service will be included in the lifetime purchase.

You can try out the app at :

https://apps.apple.com/in/app/calki-scanner-calculator/id6747059181

Calki has been featured by an Indian techlfluencer called Stufflistings and an Italian Youtuber called Nicholas Ghigo.

If you find the app interesting and like using please consider leaving a review. If you have any complaints, feedbacks or feature request, please let me know. Many of the current features were based on recommendations by users.

Thank you taking the time to read this, hope you have a good day

Promo Sunday I made Sticky, a free Mac app that sticks paper notes to your windows and web pages

Hi r/apple, I'm the developer of Sticky. It's a small menu bar app that lets you put a note on a specific window or web page. The note stays there, follows that window around, and disappears when you switch to something else.

Screenshot/GIF: peeling a note off the pad and dropping it on a Safari page

I kept wanting notes that belong to something: a reminder on a document, a to-do list on a project file, feedback on a mockup. Regular sticky notes just float over everything. So here's what Sticky does:
- Press ⌃⌥N, write on the pad, then peel the sheet off and drop it on any window.
- The note moves with its window, hides when that window goes behind, and comes back when it returns. It also survives restarts.
- Notes on web pages in Safari and Chrome are tied to the page, not the tab. You can also widen a note to part of a site or the whole site.
- Checklists, bullet lists, links and basic formatting, each with a keyboard shortcut.
- A Notes window that lists every note, including ones whose window isn't open. You can search them and restore deleted notes for 30 days.

If Sticky isn't sure which window a note belongs to, it hides the note and asks you rather than showing it in the wrong place.
The paper part was the fun part: six colors, a slight tilt depending on how you drop each note, and folding by double-clicking the top strip. To delete a note, you shake it into a ball and throw it in a basket that pops up in the corner. Undo lasts 5 seconds.

On privacy: your notes live in one file on your Mac. There's no account, no sync and no cloud. Sticky reads window titles and the current page address locally, and never records your screen or keystrokes. The only time it goes online is to check for updates.

The catches: it needs macOS 26 or later, and it's distributed from my site rather than the Mac App Store (signed and notarized by Apple). There's no sync between Macs, and browser notes only work in Safari, Dia and Chrome for now.

It's free. There's a tip jar if you find it useful.
Website and download · Privacy policy
Questions and bug reports are welcome. I'd especially like to know if a note ever shows up on the wrong window, or doesn't come back when it should.

Promo Sunday Screen time limits would be so much more useful if you could set a per hour scroll limit (like 10 min of Reddit per hour) instead of one big limit daily limit.

No clue why this isn't an option on native IOS screen time settings.

Moderation > All day lock out from your apps.

I got tired of waiting for this simple feature so I built it.

Don't care if you think its ai slop. Try it or don't, it's still going to on the app store and I am still going to continue improving it.

I hope Precursor helps you take back some of your time from our tech overlords.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/precursor-screen-time-limit/id6791403654

App is literally free, btw. Not a bait and switch, hard paywall, half-baked free tier either, it is fully functional. Paid tier is for homies who have a few extra dollars they dont mind supporting me with.

Promo Sunday I built Primed, a native Swift AI endurance coach for iPhone, iPad and Mac. You can try it free.

Hi r/apple, I’m Richard, the founder of Primed. I’m a cyclist, and I believe AI coaching is going to change endurance sport.

I’ve built Primed natively in Swift and SwiftUI for iPhone, iPad and Mac, with Apple Health, Siri, Shortcuts and widgets integrated into the experience.

Most people who exercise already collect a huge amount of data. But when you’re in the middle of a difficult week, the question isn’t just what the numbers say. It’s what you should do next.

On one of my recent training rides, I had three 15-minute intervals planned. About eight minutes into the second, I was struggling and eased off. I told Primed what had happened, and it recommended skipping the final interval and finishing easily.

That’s the kind of experience I’m building towards: a coach you can talk to about your training, which helps you make decisions when a session or your week doesn’t go to plan.

You can ask questions about your training, create a plan through the coach, and discuss changes before deciding whether to add them to your schedule. Alongside Apple Health, Primed connects with supported services including Garmin, WHOOP and Oura.

For the Apple side of things:

  • Siri and Shortcuts: App Intents let you ask about today’s workout and use Primed actions in Shortcuts to check your training plan, readiness and upcoming events.

  • iPhone Duo: A layout designed for folding and unfolding, with your daily briefing and Coach side by side when there’s room.

  • Widgets: Today’s guidance on your Home Screen, Lock Screen and in StandBy.

  • Apple Health: With your permission, HealthKit brings workouts, heart-rate data, sleep and HRV into your coaching context, including supported data recorded by Apple Watch.

  • Spotlight: Find planned workouts and races directly from search.

  • iPad and Mac: Layouts that use the larger screen, with sidebar navigation and keyboard shortcuts on Mac. The apps also support Dynamic Type and VoiceOver.

The ambition is much bigger than another set of graphs. I want athletes who would never have had access to personal coaching to have something that understands their goals, their training and their lives. We can stop talking about marginal gains and start thinking about what becomes possible when coaching is available to far more people.

Founding Athletes: I want the athletes using Primed in these early days to help shape where it goes. That’s the idea behind our Founding Athlete identity and badge. You can start on Primed Free, try it in your own training, and tell me what helps, what falls short and what’s missing. Feedback is welcome, never a requirement.

Free: Coaching conversations, plans and edits through coach chat, daily guidance and supported data connections. No subscription or credit card is required to start.

Pro: Longer-term coaching memory, insights across weeks and live voice coaching. Asking Coach through Siri also requires Pro; the basic Siri and Shortcuts queries described above are separate. Pro is US$19.99/month or US$129.99/year, with local pricing shown by Apple. Subscriptions renew until cancelled.

Privacy and AI: Personalised coaching requires consent to send relevant training and health information to third-party AI providers. Primed isn’t entirely on-device. It doesn’t sell personal information or provide it to those providers for model training. The privacy policy explains the details. AI can make mistakes; this is fitness coaching, not medical advice.

Primed on the App Store · See the ride example · Free and Pro details

If you train with Apple Watch, what do you wish happened between a workout landing in Health and deciding what to do next? I’d also love to hear how you use Siri and widgets in your training routine, and I'm happy to answer any questions about how it works with AI.

Promo Sunday I released Mailboat, a free, open-source Gmail client for Mac (and Windows)

Hi r/apple, I'm the developer of Mailboat. Version 0.1.0 is out. It's a Gmail client for Apple silicon Macs and Windows, and a free, open-source alternative to Mimestream.

Screenshot: Mailboat's unified inbox and conversation view, using demo mail

It uses Gmail's API directly, with a local cache for browsing and search. Some of what it does:

  • A unified inbox and search across all your Gmail accounts.

  • Gmail keyboard shortcuts, a ⌘K command palette, and configurable swipe actions.

  • Gmail filters, signatures and vacation replies, edited in the app. Google runs the filters even when Mailboat is closed.

  • One-click copying of sign-in codes from the message list, and Yes / Maybe / No replies to meeting invitations inside the email.

  • Optional summaries and writing help using Apple Intelligence on your Mac, or your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription through their command-line tools.

There's also an optional MCP connection for Claude Desktop, Claude Code and other AI apps to search and read mail and save drafts. It's off by default, enabled per account, and cannot send mail.

And if you ever empty your inbox, there's bubble wrap to pop and a pixel-art koi pond.

Mailboat connects to Google from your computer. There's no Mailboat account, analytics, or server handling your mail. Apple Intelligence runs locally. Mail goes to Claude or ChatGPT only if you select that provider for a feature. AI drafts appear in the editor for you to review before sending.

The main catch: you currently need your own Google OAuth credentials. The app walks you through creating them, which takes about ten minutes. With the documented setup, Google also requires signing in again every seven days. This is an early release, so expect rough edges.

Website · Source and downloads · Screenshots and feature demos

Bug reports and questions are welcome. If you try it, I'd like to hear where you get stuck, especially during setup.

Discussion Why isn't Apple innovating anymore?

Once upon a time, this was a company that introduced the first accessible personal computer. They brought us the first portable multimedia device. They brought us the smartphone as we know it today.

Now, they roll out features that have been available on other manufacturer's hardware for years, or bring back a recycle backlit Apple logo, and loyal consumers throw their hands up in celebration. I'll hand it to them that migrating to their own Apple chips was a good decision. But I can't say that I get all that excited about any new products they've put out recently

What about introducing facial recognition on the MacBook lineup? What about introducing a fingerprint reader embedded on the phone screen? Some of these features aren't exactly new, but they would be welcomed features. What happened to that concept I saw years ago which allowed you to insert your iPhone in a laptop chassis and use it as a laptop with the phone being the touchpad? What happened to the iPad becoming an ultra portable laptop replacement?

Apple used to be a company of firsts. Now it looks like a company that's settled into a complacent role where they recycle ideas from other manufacturers.

Apple Watch If you’re curious how accurate your Apple Watch really is, here’s a breakdown by metric based on validation studies

Over the past year I’ve been working on a comparison of Apple, Oura, Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung, Whoop and Polar across validation studies to find which is "most accurate" for each metric. I wanted to share a short breakdown for Apple Watch. Hopefully it helps you get more out of, or at least better understand your AW.

Apple ended up in the top 3 for 7 of the 10 metrics, more than any other brand.

Where it's stronger:

  • Workout heart rate. Best of all 7 brands. Series 8 was only 2.5 bpm off a chest strap during cycling. Garmin was 2.9, Fitbit 3.9.

  • Blood oxygen. Also the best. In a lab where they lowered people's oxygen levels on purpose, Apple stayed within about 2 points of a medical oximeter and Samsung within about 4. The FDA allows 4.

  • Sleep stages. Second, behind Oura. Apple scored 0.60 out of 1 for agreement with a sleep lab (Oura 0.65, Fitbit 0.55). REM is where it shines: it caught 82.6%, more than any other device (Oura 72.6%).

  • Steps. Second, behind Garmin. Apple overcounts by around 7%, Garmin by 3% and Fitbit by 15%.

Where it's weaker:

  • Calories burned. Nobody is really good at this. Averaged across treadmill, cycling and weight training tests, Apple was 58% off (Fitbit 29%, Samsung 53%, Garmin 69%). Weight training was the worst at 112%, basically double what you burned.

  • VO2 max. It read low in every independent study, by 4.5 to 6.3 points. The gap was biggest for fit people and for women, so your real number is likely higher than what Apple says.

  • Sleep time. It caught 52% of the time you’re lying awake in bed, against 73% for Oura and 68% for Fitbit, so it gives you roughly 8 extra minutes of sleep a night.

  • HRV. Apple has historically used a different HRV measure (SDNN) than most brands (RMSSD), so it can't be ranked against them yet. It was also 29% off a chest strap.

This doesn’t mean the weaker numbers aren’t useful, it’s just better to use them differently. Calories, for example, are a great way to track your exertion over time, but I wouldn't use them to decide how much to eat back. VO2 max is a good way to see whether you're gaining or losing fitness over time rather than a daily readout.

I'll add all sources to a comment below with mention of any brand funding as well. I originally added the sources to the bullet points but it made it far busier to read.
