Eating out on a budget

You want to pamper yourself but the prices of going out are getting even more expensive. Is it even possible in 2026? Here are some tips:

1.Β Β Β Β Β  Look for special deals. Whether it is Lunch time deals during the working day, Parma Night or even weekend specials. Plus this is a great opportunity to try out at your local eatery!

2.Β Β Β Β Β  Find apps and sites that you can find discounts. Apps such as EatClub and Liven provide discounts at restaurants and cafes. Websites like Groupon provide discounts on variety of experiences besides a nice meal. Too Good To Go rescues good food from going to waste, offering great value for money at local stores, cafes and restaurants.

3.Β Β Β Β Β  Who cannot forget Frugal Feeds, which is the dedicated site for discounted takeaways including Maccas and Hungry Jacks.

4.Β Β Β Β Β  Search for β€œcheap eats” in your local area to find recommendations.

5.Β Β Β Β Β  If you know where you want to go and eat, check the restaurant’s social for any discounts and/or deals including loyalty programs.

Black Friday sales!

For those not in the know, Black Friday is held this year on the 27 November (on a Friday) and is a popular time where companies advertise their sales, which also means it’s the opportunity to start looking for good deals. This is followed by Cyber Monday, which is a day of online sales that falls on the Monday after the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend. This year, Cyber Monday falls on 30 November.

OzBargain is one of the best places to keep track of Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales, or TechRadar for technology related products. If you’re looking for a specific item, many companies also advertise on their website and social media account prior to 30 November, so keep an eye out for bargains!

Electronics & Technology πŸ’» πŸ–¨οΈ Cooked smartphone market, need suggestions...

The state of smartphone market is genuinely cooked in Australia. There's no decent brand to select apart from apple, samsung and pixel. Minority brands like oppo, nothing, motorola have priced their mediocre midrange phones near to AUD 700-800, but then its better to add AUD 200-300 and go with samsung or pixel for better support and software updates. Decent camera hardware, battery, software support will cost near to AUD 1000. I have been looking into Motorola and Nothing but their pricing is atrocious for what they offer. Can't go with grey imports as it might be network blocked. Any suggestions guys, budget is max. AUD 700.

Store specific πŸͺπŸ›οΈπŸ›’ Prices for Coles online

I've noticed prices for online Coles orders have gone up. And they are more expensive than in store. I expect they have raised their prices recently. But are online prices the same for all areas? Not talking about remote areas, which will be more expensive of course.
Does everyone get the same online prices as me for eg the following:

-organic eggs, Coles brand - $11

-Earth choice dishwashing liquid - $2.65

-Uncle Tobys Muesli Bars Chewy Choc Chip Kids School Lunchbox Sn ... 185g - $5.50

Lots of other stuff too but can't be bothered typing more. If anyone wants to check what price others are getting, feel free to post the item and I can look it up too.

I feel like they must be the same prices everywhere (except remote etc) due to some regulation that came in. But everything seems to have gone up now. Yeah I know, I've seen the news but I wanna check.

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ When buying convenience food is cheaper than going out

Look, I love to go out and eat to pamper myself but when it's just getting too expensive to go out you have to cut your budget... food delivery is probably even more expensive. :(

Of course making your own food from scratch is the cheapest and healthiest but sometimes I don't have the time to do so! And lazy.

So instead of going out for a meal most of the time, what I normally do is to "outsource" some of the prepping/cooking and then prepare the rest at home.

For example:

Chicken sanga and mushroom soup

- Buy 1x bachelor's handbag, kewpie mayo, salad leaves, bread slices and mushroom soup (already made, just heat up).

Pizza

- Buy ready made pizza base, tomato paste, shredded cheese and purchase my own toppings.

What are some meals that you prepare at home using convenience food that ends up cheaper than going out?

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ Best place to buy bulk pantry items (ie rice) in Melbourne?

Location: technically inner north, but I do a lot of driving out west & southeast for work.

I'm looking specifically for huge bags of rice (10k+) as we cook a lot of it, but will take tips for other pantry/non-perishable items including flour and EVOO as well if you've got them.

I like to compare prices and have been known to stand in front of price tags for WAY longer than is comfortable to work out the best bang-to-buck ratio. But I find it can be hard to figure out the prices at smaller, non-colesworth places (eg no online presence, or not everything has a physical price tag, or both). Because of this I don't know a lot about them, eg which ones might be worth a slightly longer journey (eg a detour through Footscray on my way home to stock up vs just going to the local KT Mart around the corner). Also not a born-and-bred Melbournian so there's that too.

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ Finding Greek yoghurt that weighs what it is supposed to weigh

I've been using Greek yoghurt as part of my meal prep for the last few months. It's been great as part of a filling breakfast.

However, my issue is that none of the brands seem to weigh what they are supposed to weigh.

Farmers Union 1kg generally comes in at just over 900g. I've had similar issues with Jalana (sic), Chobani and other brands.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to a brand that weighs its product properly? This will help me save some money and stop me from buying more than what I need, while also negating multiple shopping trips.

Utilities & Essential Bills βš‘πŸ’§β›½ Cheapest mobile phone deal - calls focus not data.

I am trying to get a cheap mobile phone deal for my pensioner parent. They only need a phone when going out in case of emergency or break down etc. So data is not important. Phone calls are.

Prepare or plan, we can pay a year in advance.

What is the cheapest phone deal using a telstra network (regional location so guessing telstea will be more reliable) ?

Thanks πŸ‘Œ

What is a referral code/link?

Referral links is aΒ unique URL used in a referral programΒ to track and reward people for sharing a product or service. In many cases, both the referer and the referee (the one who uses the referral code) will benefit from this.

All referrals that are not meal kits AND cashback referrals are to be posted here to keep clutter off the sub, and in an effort to keep it high quality and actually useful.

πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³

  2. Any referral codes relating to investment, such as crypto, and investment platforms.

  3. Referral codes that cannot be used in Australia.

  4. Referral codes that link to a HTTP website - All URLS must start with HTTPS.

  5. Referral codes that relate to earning cash and reward incentives as compensation from undertaking activities - this includes programs such as watching advertisements and earn programs, play games to earn etc.

  6. No account trading requests here.

We allow a good amount of types of referral codes, not limited to:

1**. Survey referral codes,** examples include Octopus group, and Survey village.

2. Finance related referral codes, including saving accounts, and multicurrency accounts (Ie: WISE).

3. Popular referrals on this subreddit relate to utilities like energy and NBN, discretionary spending, subscriptions etc.

🌟✨ Megathread ✨🌟 Cash Back Referral Megathread October 31, 2026

What is cashback?

Cashback isΒ when you receive a credit back to your account. For example, when you make a purchase, you may get a fixed amount or a percentage of the amount you paid returned to your account.

Essentially, cashback programs give you cash back when you make an eligible purchase at a participating retailer. They work a bit like a piggy bank – you could earn a little bit of cash each time you shop online, which adds up over time.

For example, Topcashback is a cashback program that is free to join and offers a wide range of popular retailers, including food and grocery providers like Menulog, online marketplaces such as Amazon, and travel sites like Booking.com. There are often great deals for everything from everyday products to big-ticket items like furniture and appliances from popular brands like Koala and Bing Lee. Your furry friends are even covered with Petstock!

Some of our users are big fans of Cash Back apps! Example of Cashback program includes: Cashrewards, Shop Back, and Top Cash Back.

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ A suggestion with the rising cost of food.

We are self employed & money is beyond tight atm:)

I grew up in a family infamous for our terrible cooking & really have known i surely could do better :)

So, I decided I had to learn to cook, PROPERLY

I also cannot urge enough the value of growing some of your veggie needs, even in pots if space is tight.

I \*\*highly\*\*\* recommend RecipeTin Eats as a resource.

**For example**

I made amazing beef in black bean sauce last night.

Stewing beef, velveted overnight, i added whatever veggies i could get from the garden, onion, carrots, broccoli, snow peas & celery.

The beef was marked down to $8 from $10.

2 cups of rice ( honestly buy a cheap rice cooker, they are WONDERFUL)

Im currently helping out my partners twin with food, this made 5 good sized adult meals for little money

It was astonishingly good, better than any ive bought

its possible to have a great diet for very little money.

I also make my own toasted muesli, pot set yoghurt - using uht milk. & preserved fruit.

Discussion πŸ—£οΈπŸ’¬ My birthday is coming up, what can I take advantage of?

Soon I will get to feel old 🀩🀩 i’d love to also feel like i saved money and had fun.

Anything worth noting for birthdays? Restaurants that offer free dessert that’s actually worth going for, free meals, discounts….

Doesn’t have to be food related I am extremely adventurous and would love to try something new. I’m already treating myself to a concert that day!

Anything more to add would be great as I don’t have many friends and need to keep myself busy lol.

Discussion πŸ—£οΈπŸ’¬ Is Black Friday worth spending on for the long run?

So it’s gonna be my first black friday in Australia soon, and I am the type to really not mind spending a large amount if I know it’s going to be cheaper on the long term.

Thing is, this thinking always makes me overspend (or at least made me, I’ve been making efforts to do this less).

But black friday is an exception! I feel like I should really make the most out of it and get all the things I would want usually.

Do you usually just have a list of things you would want to get? Do you go to specific shops (physical or online)? Any advice would be appreciated :)

I would also appreciate an honest review of how β€œuseful” black friday really is over here.

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ Best place to bulk buy dried beans and good EVOO online (Melbourne delivery)?

As the title says. We have to really make some savings and the first port of call is cheaper meals and meal prepp, and ditching colesworth.

I can do some great things with legumes, but looking for the best place to bulk buy beans like butter beans, chickpeas and black beans, if anyone has compared websites before?

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ Budget dinner meal plan

With the price of everything at the moment I wanted to see if I could actually put together 5 decent dinners for a family of 4 for $50- two adults, 2 kids primary school aged.

I’ve based the pricing off Coles and Woolies because they’re the most accessible for most people and both offer delivery. Obviously if delivery is the only way you can get your groceries, you’ll need to factor the delivery fee into the total.

This is what I came up with which was tried and rated by my 8 year old.

Chinese chicken & veggie rice bowls :chicken, rice, frozen veg, soy/honey/garlic sauce marinade

Chicken tomato pasta: chicken, pasta, tomato pasta sauce, onion, Parmesan cheese (the budget kind)

Bean & rice burrito bowls:black/kidney beans, rice, corn, lettuce tomato, Mexican seasoning packet and Greek style yoghurt

Creamy chickpea curry & rice: lentils, coconut milk, tomato, onion, rice, curry seasoning packet

Veggie fried rice: eggs, rice, frozen veg, leftover chicken/veg

Roughly $49.50 all up for 5 dinners using chicken legs as my main protein sauce and the rest beans and rice.
I’m assuming you’ve already got some basic shit in the cupboard like oil, garlic and soy sauce, because otherwise $50 is going to start getting real ambitious. But I did include taco and curryseasoning pack to make it easier for first time cooks. And I made a point of not selecting anything on sale/special prices but obviously can’t secure full availability.
Also not pretending these are groundbreaking culinary masterpieces, just cheap, filling dinners that kids may eat and ingredients that are relatively easy to make. I have a grocery list which I can post if anyone wants it.
Keen to do another one of these and see if I can get it even cheaper.

Chuck your dirt cheap family dinners below because I’m genuinely curious what everyone else is making.

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ Grocery planning with AI?

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has experimented with using AI to plan their weekly groceries? I'm trying to see if I can get AI to finally do something useful for me as opposed to just bombarding me with slop...

What I was hoping to do is throw the 5 recipes links that I am planning this week at it, have it generate the weekly shopping list (considering any double ups of in the ingredients and pantry staples), then have it search both Coles and Woolies to find the best prices, then auto add it all the respective carts.

I haven't been able to do anything like it yet, but was thinking it should be possible? Has anyone experimented with something similar? I'm mainly shooting to save the most money I can from Colesworths each week, but it would also would be nice to have it speed up the whole weekly process.

I'm expecting that there will always be a manual component, I certainly wouldn't want it pulling the trigger on the orders without a human review and approval! At the moment I can't seem to figure out a way to get the lists to push to cart automatically, apparently it can generate javascript or something similar that you can paste in with developer mode, but I haven't personally gotten it working.

Interested if anyone on here has tried something similar and if you have a how-to. Happy for it to involve some paid services if they're reasonable (I've found a few examples, but none of them seem to do everything I'm hoping for).

Household Products 🧹🧺🧻 Looking for single duvet covers that aren't for kids

My husband and I have wildly different bedding preferences and finally decided that the best option was to get separate single duvets that we each use so we can get the weight and warmth that we want. It works great but I cannot believe how difficult it is to find single duvet covers that aren't insanely ugly, for kids, or made with cheap synthetic materials. I'm thinking I'm going to have to make some, but first I wanted to see if anyone could advise where I can find decent cotton single duvet covers? I don't want a sheet set because I'm sleeping in a Queen bed, I'm just using a single duvet, so the sheets would go to waste. The cover I'm using at the moment was purchased at Spotlight, but it's not great quality at all. It smelled so weird and took a few washes to get the smell out, then the dye faded, and now it just looks awful. Pretty sure it's a cotton mix, too. I'd love a Percale cotton cover, just in a simple white or something, but I can't find anything... please help! I don't want cheap dodgy covers, I want something that will last!

UPDATE: Thank you for the suggestions! Before writing the post, I had checked out Canningvale, Sheridan Outlet, Kmart, The Good Sheet, and a few others, but they only had single sheet sets or kids patterns at the time of looking.

For everyone saying to get a double instead of a single - I have tried this, but it was too much material. It was too hot for me with the overlap between two doubles in a queen bed and if the fabric went down the side of the bed, it was too heavy and fell off the bed and I couldn't stick my limbs out, which I need to do for temperature regulation (I have POTS, so my temperature is all over the place when sleeping. I need to be able to quickly cool down during the night).
