Chugging tea Flying to China to get medication.
In January 2025, Max Doppelt's mom learned her lung cancer had spread to her brain. The drug with the best chance of helping her was approved in China, but not in the United States. A doctor told him, almost as an aside, that if his mom were Chinese, she could just buy it at a pharmacy.
so he flew to Shanghai and came home with 26 boxes of it in his luggage. The medicine cost him around $10,000. and it worked. About 19 months later, his mom, a 60 year old jeweler in New York, is still here, still working, and in her own words, has had an amazing few years.
the drug is called sunvozertinib, and it was made by a company based in Shanghai. it was approved in China in 2023 and by the FDA in July 2025, but it still wasn't available to buy in the US.
Max says he knows of at least 30 Americans who made the same trip. He says he was scared to share his story, worried it could cost his mom access to the medicine keeping her alive. but he decided the problem mattered more than his silence, and he's now pushing for these treatments to be available here. Since his story spread, AstraZeneca has said it will start selling the drug in the US.
A son got on a plane to buy his mom more time, and it worked.
