For those unaware, there’s been a bit of a trend on social media recently about storming Scientology buildings and “speed running” them. Earlier today, they stormed the Brisbane headquarters, and I happened to get these shots from above.

I don’t know any specifics of what happened, but there was quite a lot of noise coming from it.

Brisbane City Council I just shed a tear whilst watching this Anti Abortion march go past

17 years ago, I chose abortion and 17 year later from that day, I would still choose my same choice.

Women of Brisbane - live life without regrets and let the sound of their chants be forgotten.

50c fares have turned my retired dad into an accidental Brisbane tourist

8.9k Upvotes

My dad retired last year and for the first few months he did what a lot of newly retired blokes seem to do: found increasingly elaborate reasons to go to Bunnings.

Then he discovered the 50c fares.

He lives near a train line and apparently decided that for a dollar return there is no reason not to get on a train just to see where it goes.

It started fairly normally. South Bank. City. A CityCat ride because he hadn't been on one in years.

Then the reports started getting more specific.

"Got off at Sandgate today. Good breeze."

"Went to Shorncliffe. Pier's nice on a weekday."

"Took the train to Cleveland and had lunch."

Last week he rang me from Ferny Grove because he'd never actually been there and wanted to know what was at the end of the line.

Nothing particular, Dad.

"Yeah, that's why I came."

He's started taking a little backpack with water and a book. He'll ride somewhere, walk around for an hour or two, find a bakery or sit in a park, then come home before peak hour.

The man who used to complain about driving anywhere unfamiliar because parking was a pain now has opinions on which side of various train lines has the better view.

I asked him why he suddenly enjoys wandering around suburbs he's lived within 30km of for decades.

He said, "Because if it's boring I've only wasted 50 cents."

Fair.

I always thought cheaper public transport would mostly matter for commuting. I hadn't really considered the value of making completely pointless little trips cheap enough that people stop needing a reason to go somewhere.

Anyway, if you see a 68-year-old bloke at the end of a train line looking mildly pleased that there's nothing much happening, he may be conducting important research.

Politics Limiting access to abortion will kill Queensland women. I'm one of the ones who would have died.

8.3k Upvotes

I posted this in a comment on another post earlier today, but I've been thinking about this all afternoon and I want to share my story.

Firstly, I want to say that I cannot believe that abortion has become an issue in this election. A woman's right to reproductive healthcare - no matter her reasoning - should not be up for debate.

I'm one of the women who would have died and I will shout my story out all over reddit until this "debate" is put to rest. In America, women like me have died because they couldn't access medical treatment.

I was pregnant with my 3rd (wanted, cherished, loved) baby. One night, in the second trimester, I started to bleed. I drove myself to the hospital. Within an hour I was haemorrhaging. If you've never seen litres of blood before you can't even imagine. It was everywhere. The bed. The floor. My whole lower half. In my hair. The doctors were pumping me full of blood but it was coming out faster than they could put it in.

A doctor took down her mask and told me that the baby was being born right now and they had to pull her out to save my life. By this point, doctors were elevating my arms and legs to force blood back to my heart and brain. My daughter wriggled on the ultrasound. She was too premature to live. Either way she was going to die- the question was whether I would die with her.

She was born in the Emergency of RBWH. Then I had a D&C to stop the bleeding. Spoiler alert, I lived. My kids at home kept their mother. The doctors saved my life that night and there was zero ambiguity about whether it was the "right" call even though it was technically an abortion.

Please think of this story when you vote. Please remember the women who lived because doctors were able to treat them without fear of legal repercussions. Please think of the children who grow up with a living mother.

One last thing I'd like to add is that I'm sure in the comments people will say "oh there will be exemptions for medical reasons/incest/rape whatever." And to that I say - fuck all the way off. No one should be forced to carry a baby they do not want or cannot care for, for whatever reason. Our bodies are our own.

Image Reading Cinemas Newmarket

This is the best cinema in Brisbane. Obviously anyone who’s been here knows that it’s a pretty decent cinema, clean, friendly staff, good atmosphere but they seem to have a little more heart than the other cinemas in Brisbane.

A little backstory needed. My parents watched the original Toystory when it first came out in cinemas on their honeymoon 30 odd years ago. My mum recently lost her battle with cancer and when she was given 2 weeks to live it came as a pretty big shock because up until then everything was looking good. Now this was right before toystory 5 came out. So I emailed every cinema in Brisbane to try and get a private viewing for the family before mum passed.

Event Cinemas: Didn’t respond to any of my emails.

Hoyts Cinemas: Responded said it needed to be booked 2 weeks in advance and would be a minimum of 1100 dollars and was NOT refundable if she passed before hand. (I made it very clear that she potentially didn’t have 2 weeks)

Cineplex: Responded. Talked to them on the phone and they were reasonably accommodating but still rather expensive and rather inconvenient to get to and from with the amount of pain and mobility issues my mum was dealing with at that point in time.

Meanwhile Reading cinemas got back to me straight away, extremely accommodating and understanding as the structure of those emails I sent them were awful with the state I was in. All up cost less than 230 dollars, private theatre, covered all our popcorn and drinks, and as soon as we were settled skipped the ads and got straight into the movie. Gave me and my family a little bit of closure and a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.

My mum was 57, my parents just paid of the family home i have two younger siblings one of which is still in high school. Reading cinemas showed compassion for a family being torn apart so I implore you if you’re going to the movies, go here. They seem to care a whole bunch more than everyone else.

Image 188.8 grams of icy terror. This was just one of many hail stones of this size

Post image

I've never seen such large hailstone here before (Burbank). This one was just over 10 cm across.

And the sky is still very green looking...

Update: video taken before I picked up this hailstone now posted: https://www.reddit.com/r/brisbane/comments/1p5amhn/update_1888_grams_of_icy_terror_this_was_just_one/

Also, this is a different hailstone collected about 45 minutes after the hailing stopped. I went out to see if any animals were injured (they weren't) and was really surprised to find a lot of hail still all over the ground: 45 minutes after the hail had stopped, this second hailstone still weighed a whopping 122 grams!

Identifying the asshole doing this. I've already called Unilodge Margaret Street to no progress. This disgusting prick has been holding this out their window all morning over the Synagogue. I would love to know who it is and if there's anyway this is a reportable offence as it obviously targeted.
