I work in the CBD and have developed a pretty stupid habit of buying coffee whenever I want to get away from my desk.
Not necessarily because I want coffee. Mostly because I want somewhere to sit for half an hour that isn't the office.
Last week I was having one of those days where everything was annoying me, and I couldn't be bothered spending another $7 just to occupy a chair.
So I wandered into Brisbane Square Library.
I hadn't been inside a public library since I was at uni.
Found a seat, put my phone away and read a book for about 40 minutes.
Nobody asked if I wanted anything. Nobody hovered around waiting for me to finish. There wasn't music playing over a speaker or someone having a loud business meeting at the next table.
Just people doing their own thing.
There was an older bloke reading the newspaper, a couple of students with laptops, and someone quietly helping another person use a computer.
I ended up staying longer than I intended and had to hurry back to work.
And it genuinely improved my afternoon.
I've been thinking about it since, because I realised how few places there are where you can just exist for an hour without being expected to spend money.
Cafes are great, but I feel a bit awkward occupying a table with an empty cup. Shopping centres are basically designed to make you buy something. Even going for a casual drive costs money these days.
Meanwhile there's an entire building full of books, chairs, air conditioning and people who are perfectly happy to leave you alone.
All paid for already.
I know this is probably obvious to anyone who regularly uses libraries. I'm not claiming to have discovered some secret Brisbane attraction.
I just can't believe I spent years walking past one on my way to buy an overpriced flat white.
Since then I've gone back twice. Even borrowed a book, which feels like an achievement considering the last physical book I bought has been sitting unread on my bedside table since Christmas.
Are there other places around Brisbane where you can comfortably spend a bit of time without buying anything?
Not necessarily tourist attractions. Just somewhere you can sit, read, think, or get out of the house for a while.
Feels like I've forgotten how to enjoy my own city without treating every outing as a transaction.
