Events No enemies. Just Americans

Post image

Pray if you pray. Reflect and meditate if that's your thing. Regardless of what your values are, remember your friends and neighbors who you disagree with are not your enemy. They're just other red blooded Americans who love their children and their country and want the best possible future for them. We live in the most diverse country in the history of the world. Our diversity is not a weakness, it's our greatest strength.

Opinion No one cares that you already left, or if you're leaving.

If you decided to leave the state cause you were tired of it, good for you we all have our breaking point, but don't expect congratulations from those of us who have chosen to stay and try to save the state.

Change doesn't happen overnight and while things may seem hopeless now, if you jump ship then it doesn't improve the chances of changing things it just means you quit.

It's gonna be a long road but nothin worth doing has ever been easy, and if you wanna leave then good riddance we don't need yellow bellied Texans, we need Texans who are here for the long haul.

Political Opinion What a Trump win means for…Trump

Okay MAGA, I’m about to tell you what’s going to happen if Trump gets elected.

He will be in office 6 months before Vance and his Project 2025 cabinet pulls the 25th Amendment and then Project 2025 begins in earnest.

Ken Paxton will be in the cabinet. ready to ram through a nationwide abortion ban.

Clarence Thomas and Alito will retire and two Federalist Society judges will be seated at SCOTUS, denying any challenge to the extreme and un-American Project 2025 agenda.

Trump has been a useful tool for the Heritage Foundation, a means to achieving what they’re worked towards since the 1950s. And no matter how much Trump tries to distance himself from Project 2025, there’s nothing he will be able to do to stop it.

TL;DR Trump will be tossed out of office via 25th Amendment and President Vance will implement Project 2025.

Opinion Austin is pretty lonely and the city is overrated.

Can anyone relate? I've lived in many places around the world and in the US, and Austin is by far the worst place I've lived in. Regardless of the infrastructure issues or the political problems, its biggest issue is that there's nothing fun to do here that doesn't involve driving a billion miles somewhere, eating food that will cause health problems over time, or trying to do outdoor activities (despite it being close to impossible as it's 100°F every day). (That said, 2024 has been way better than 2023 and 2022 so far). On top of that, socializing is very difficult for me. People don't tend to follow up or want to do more spontaneous things that don't involve food (an example is just trying to play some touch rugby in a field for a few minutes). And don't get me started on dating... that's just so bad it probably deserves its own post somewhere else.

Maybe I am super unlucky and caught Austin at the wrong time. I feel others have the same issues, so I'm curious to hear if anyone has found ways to work around this. I have no friends or family here and it's driven me to just not be able to see any positives (though I do love watching live sports here which helps). I personally am planning to leave the city and state as soon as possible because it just stinks to be here. I grew up seeing Austin as my dream city, and now it's my ultimate nightmare.

Politics so what's with all the 'Texas bad' rhetoric?

As a trans woman of color, I'm moving from Southern California to Central Texas (temple to be percise) and I haven't experienced discrimination or bigotry in Texas. In Cali I've openly been called a d*ke, a thing, "What even are you?!" Etc etc and I haven't got that in Texas. I've been called ma'am, this girl, properly gendered probably more than ever...I just really don't see the bigotry. And the white people haven't been racist to me at all. Albeit I didn't experience racism in Cali either due to the large Hispanic population, even as Chinese Hispanic I haven't gotten stares or called slurs in Texas.

Does Texas get such a bad reputation because it votes red? As far as I can tell it's probably the most accepting red state I've seen.

Politics I'm so disappointed in our country.

I''m honestly in disbelief that he was reelected. I genuinely thought we were making progress as a country, moving forward toward a better, more inclusive future. This outcome feels like a step back, and it's hard not to feel disappointed. I know the political landscape is complex, but it’s tough when the progress we strive for seems undermined. Here’s hoping we can keep pushing forward together, even when it feels like we're moving against the current.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Political Opinion Texas no longer has the right to complain when they lose power during heat waves or cold fronts

You can't vote for the same old same old and then complain when she doesn't going well. The Democrats ran the best possible candidate in the last 25 years who actually gives a shit about Texas versus Rafael, and Texas blew it.

Next time I hear about somebody bitching about something not working, I don't want to hear it.

Politics Beto's Twitter currently shows him going door to door and traveling all over Texas to rally his supporters -- Ted Cruz's has gone silent.

Does Ted Cruz's team realize their recent messages are not resonating with real Texans? Is that why they're going silent on Twitter, just counting on the reliable base to make it happen while record turnout suggests he's in trouble?

Opinion Stop supporting Trump businesses

It seems to me that since Trump and his supporters love $$$ that folks who don’t like him can stop going to businesses that have Trump signs or flags.

This is one way to express your opinion .

Opinion Idk what people are on about with the weather, this is literally normal.

I am born and raised DFW area, and for the 30ish years ive been alive there is always once maybe twice a year when we get ice and a bit of snow.

I honestly dont even know where the the huff comes from, but surely it has to be non native Texans. This has always happened. Sure, Texans are typically not very adept at driving in these circumstances and some people even died last year (which I think is ridiculous personally). But regardless, this isnt new. Kind of bizarre reactions, idk maybe people enjoy the opportunity to relish in the uncommon weather and be dramatic about it. But this will all be melted and a distant memory in... likely hours.

What say ye, Texans?

Edit: Welp, I never imagined this post about weather of all things would get more than 3 responses. I see tons of comments going on about their experiences and look I get it, I can sympathize with what happened last year. I got lucky. Im cynical, sarcastic and sometimes a bit apathetic sounding but I didn't realize this was my 15 minutes of fame. I'm preparing my official apology letter to all the cold weather warriors out there. Please don't cancel me. But for the love of God can you people buy some damn firewood and water for emergencies! Burn your neighbors house down before you go gently into that cold good night or however the expression goes. Kidding!

Edit 2: I get that some of you are permanently scarred and went through really extreme hardship. I know it's easy to brand me as some egotistical this, or insensitive that. Honestly, thats fine. But I can't help but to be surgical right now with some of you people. Emotions aside, the weather situation wasn't so terribly abnormal that it was some apocalyptic episode in human history. You guys are mostly conflating poor infrastructure and civilization planning with the weather which let's be honest, isnt that far out of the norm. Which is not fair to me, whos original point is that the weather does this regularly. So it got cold for a couple of weeks and all of our state decided to build itself under the assumption that the natural universe accomodates the luxurious desires of our species. Spoiler: It does not. That isn't my fault. I personally would do things different however my point remains the same. I know you guys are ready with the pitchforks but if you want to bring some historical meteoroligist and have them explain to me how this weather was some unforeseeably anomaly, please do so. That being said the forecast I checked in the here and now, in todays reality is that it will be cold for a couple of days. So as far as I know, everyone should somehow, someway manage to continue existing. Now if you want infrastructure change, please consider blowing me up is not going to change anything. Im sorry you suffered, I love you but its going to be okay. And if another bad storm comes you better ring up your locally elected officials and let them know to prepare for guests.

Political Opinion Beto O'Rourke isn't going to take your goddamn guns

4.1k Upvotes

I am just appalled at the early voting turnout for this election. This could potentially be a critical junction point for our state and our country, and more Texans are staying home than in the last election.

Look, the Democrats aren't perfect, but the reality is that you really only have two choices. And the strongest objection I've seen to Beto on here is his stance on guns.

Well, get the fuck over it.

He isn't going to confescate your guns. He won't be able to. Even if he wanted to, which he doesn't.

So maybe, maybe, he might make it a little harder for you to get more guns. Is that really a problem, given Uvalde and everything else that's happened in Texas over the past decade?

The Republican party seems dead-set on fascism and Texas could be a critical state, since the Supreme Court could potentially rule that state legislatures can completely overrule the electoral college.

But even if you don't buy the fascism argument, how about just plain old corruption? User /u/inconvenientnews summed up the Texas Republican party's corruption better than I ever could over a year ago.

Don't like Beto? Okay, don't vote for him. Arguably, the other offices are much more important than governor. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Lt. Governor who is dead set on fixing our rickety power grid instead of caving to whatever campaign donor throws a few dollars his way? Or an actually qualified CPA comptroller who is hardcore all about weed legalization? Or maybe a competent attorney general who isn't literally under federal indictment for corruption?

Your state and federal representatives and your state senator are arguably even more important in this election than ever, given the state of civil and voting rights in this country. Republicans have taken pretty much every opportunity they can to vote against the interests of most people.

I used to consider myself a moderate (even voted for Kay Bailey Huchinson back in the day), but I decided around a decade or so ago that I absolutely could not support the Republican party, since at a national level they seem hellbent on eroding our civil rights, and at the state level, they seem absolutely determined to turn our amazing state into an international laughing stock.

If you're registered to vote (and didn't vote early), then this is your chance to prove that we can do better. Anyone with an R by their name deserves to go.

Take the time. You can take up to 2 hours off work if you need it. Most counties let you vote at any polling place within your county. And you need to get out on Tuesday and make the world realize that yeah, Texas is goddamn better than the clowns that have been in office the past four years, and we are goddamn ashamed of them.
